Artist: M AX NOI MACH Title: One Deep Format: 10" Label: Ozonokids Country: Spain Price: $14.00 |
| "A gap between Rap/Club Music, Noise, Power-Electronics and Stand-up Comedy. Influenced by the likes of Dj Screw, Baltimore Club, Puerto Rican Dancehall music and the South Philadelphia city urban decay. Over 20 minutes of pure, filthy harsh dance-hole mayhem. The cover is a five inks silk-screened light blue cardboard wrapped up in a plastic bag with insert. Art by: Robert Francisco." -Ozonokids |

Artist: M AX NOI MACH/UNCHAINED Title: Split Format: 7" Label: Ozonokids Country: Spain Price: $8.00 |
| "Split between M Ax Noi Mach (bringing his heavy fuzz beats out, slowing them down to the core. Pretty "industrial" i must say) and Unchained (originally Knifestorm). His songs involve guitar lines over harsh and semi-melodic tones making his voice run thru an internal feedback that effects all the tones, sometimes being unrecognizable as a human voice. This incredible split brings out a 50% harsh 50% psychedelic variable feedback attack. Art by: Nate Davis / Robert Francisco." -Ozonokids |

Artist: MAC BLACKOUT Title: Dont Let Your Love Die Format: 7" Label: Sacred Bones Country: USA Price: $5.50 |
| "Sacred Bones presents a new solo single from ex-FUNCTIONAL BLACKOUTS and current DAILY VOID man MAC BLACKOUT that sounds that could have been made either in the year 1980 or 2980. "Dont Let Your Love Die" a driving synth driven tune that almost goes pop-albeit in a very Alexander Robotnik kind of way-sounds like it might as well have been recorded on an NES console. On the B-side "Sometimes" is a dirge like midtempo song that goes beyond the obvious comparisons to the Helios Creed/Damon Edge orbit and at times recalls Sacred Bones labelmate Gary War and even Macs other project, Daily Void." - Sacred Bones. |
|
Artist: MAC BLACKOUT Title: S/T Format: LP Label: Dead Beat Country: USA Price: $11.00 |

The tracks have a sweet DIY home recording feel to them which makes these deeply personal tunes shine. Performed with guitar and vocals, self-created clarinet, saxophone and electronic violin all intricately layered into very cohesive, concise songs. Twelve tracks. For fans of Electric Eels, Blank Dogs, Chrome, early David Bowie, Catholic Boys, Factums, Frustration, Joy Division, Kraftwerk, Daily Void, Haunted George, Jay Reatard, Funtional Blackouts and Dead Hookers."- Dead Beat |

Artist: MAGIC LANTERN Title: Magic Lantern Format: LP Label: Woodsist Country: USA Price: $15.00 |
| "Magic Lantern came into being at the mid-point of the decade, sparked into existence by a simultaneous period of musical discovery for Philip French, William Giacchi, and Cameron Stallones. Inspired by the psychedelic approach to musical tone and structure in various eras and genres of rock (not at all excluding Germany and Japan in the 70s), the three realized they ought to make use of the new creative tools theyd stumbled upon, and began jamming the summer away in twin poles of Long Beach and Whittier, CA. Over the course of a year, they recorded every jam and compiled a full-lengths worth of home-studio demos which later became their self-released CD-R. At the same time, each member was developing solo and side projects to channel parallel universes of sound. A year after their first jam together, Magic Lantern decided to make the leap to playing live and recruited good friends and like-minded musicians Chip Knechtel and Gavin Fort to be their marathon rhythm section. The jams from their CD-R were used as the blueprints for the band to develop a raw, stripped-down sound that emphasized hypnotic rhythms and improvised guitar duels. After being invited to play at the Tee Pee Records showcase Manifest Destiny in August of 07, th Lantern kept up a steady diet of shows in L.A. and Long Beach for the next year, earning a local following and two highly limited tapes on Not Not Fun Records. Through the spring of 08, they began writing new material as a band and developing the new songs live. In the summer, they recorded these jams with sound wizard Bobb Bruno, which led to the Not Not Fun LP High Beams that September. At this point, the band had fully emerged from transition into a shared creative vision of five musicians, each possessing a singular voice, all united in the common goal to engage both mind and body through good vibrations." -Woodsist. Artist: MAGIC LANTERN Title: Platoon Format: CD Label: Not Not Fun Country: USA Price: $13.00 |
| "Its been a while since The Lantern shined its High Beams out into the world but lifes a maze of alternate paths (marriage, children, Portland Oregon, etc) and thats just the way it goes/went. Fortunately for all lovers of heavy male psych brotherhoods, the ML gang convened back in 2009 before parting ways temporarily to track their second full-length, Platoon, and here it is. As oughta be expected, its a monstrous hot-rod cruise into screaming dual wah distortions powered by the poker faced Gavin/Chip rhythm section and splattered with jazzy freak-out organ and the occasional Stallones echo yelp. Featuring most of their live classics from the pre-hiatus era (Dark Cicadas, Friendship, etc) and tracked/mixed by Best Coaster Bobb Bruno, this fills the hole in yr heart left by High Beams." - Not Not Fun. |

Artist: MAGIK MARKERS Title: Balf Quarry Format: LP Label: Drag City Country: USA Price: $16.00 |
| "Balf Quarry is the an all-new album-length piece of the puzzle from MAGIK MARKERS. Long known for their shattering live appearances, Magik Markers put together really hot albums too -like Balf Quarry. Working with engineer SCOTT COLBURN (Sun City Girls, Animal Collective, Sir Richard Bishop), Magik Markers have captured a lot of different moods and twitches on Balf Quarry. Tremoring mid-rhythms form the body, with a couple showers of hardcore, high flying free-duo style and several clinking music boxes of woe as well. On slower tunes, the mass of brooding guitar tone generated is ELISAs signature, a carving all of her own. Fills, licks and other touches move the songs a broken arms length away from a fundament of chaos and horror." - Drag City |

Artist: MAGIK MARKERS Title: Balf Quarry Format: CD Label: Drag City Country: USA Price: $14.00 |
| "Oh, Magik Markers -- you dirty fuckers! You look like a reasonably intelligent young woman and man -- perhaps a bit intense, but who isnt in these end times? Then the needle drops and youre amok, dusting us from the git-go, wild-eyed in a china shop where stop keeps meaning more. Ah, if it were only music -- but it would appear youve rethought that too. And would it kill you to crack a smile? When an album begins with a song called Risperdal, one should assume a mind-and-body-slamming forty-five minutes or so are underway. And one wouldnt be wrong, dickhead. Sure, Balf Quarry has moody space in its soul, melodies whether stretched over rock, ululating rhythm, chimes n piano and/or wah-wah. Regardless of the configuration, Elisa Ambrogio and Pete Nolan are locked together, beating it out, listening to feeling the sound of their earth quake. And slicing through all the atmosphere, Elisas voice is a spear of light, splashes of mud, an acid purple flashback. The Balf Quarry libretto reads like an inner monologue of some poor bastard from The Stand: desperate and vengeful musings from the head of a witness to and survivor of an apocalypse, in a world they never made, dreaming helplessly of the demons out west. Safe before their life sets in might mean hope in this landscape. The worlds not broken -- people ruin it every time. Fills, licks and other touches move the songs a broken arms length away from a fundament of chaos and horror. When colors actually match and you have grey music for grey days, its great -- but what about grey music for cherry red lava days, or rainbow sounds arcing over six months of darkness? Anything goes -- and just your luck, Magik Markers have brought anything with them on Balf Quarry -- a multicolored projectile of vomit you can sing along to! If psychosis is your thing, Balf Quarry is like a jukebox just for you. The only thing its missing is a brick attached to the CD to facilitate throwing it through your window! No, were not talking about you, asshole. This is the royal you -- the you of all Magik Markers fandom, the you of anyone with ears and the guts for this shit. Wot fun! Prepare for the birth of the second sun, yall." - Drag City |

Artist: MAGIK MARKERS Title: Baltimore Trust Format: CDR Label: Arbitrary Signs Country: USA Price: $12.00 |
| "Super quality recording of a great I trust my guitar era Magik Markers show in Baltimore back in 2003. The early band were in full effect here, creating tight organic instant no wave compositions each night out of naive guitar, rocking/shambling beats, screams and whatever happened to be going through Elisa Ambrogios mind each night. This is a really cohesive show and it kind of sets the record straight about what the early Markers actually sounded like. The banters on point too. Cool document" - Arbitrary Signs. |

Artist: MAGIK MARKERS Title: Boss Format: CD Label: Ecstatic Peace Country: USA Price: $11.00 |
| "When confronted with an example of magnificence in nature, such as a waterfall, Jane Goodall reported that the chimpanzees she observed were captivated, as if in awe of the beauty of the world. On BOSS, the Magik Markers have tried to capture the chimps awe. A formality and restraint the Markers have never exerted on their previously recorded material is present on BOSS. Now the Markers are Jainists, with their mouths masked so as to not inhale even one tiny insect, here pursuing the killer gentle with a vengeance. Recorded in the cavernous dark of Echo Canyon West, with producer Lee Ranaldo working the boards like a diviner, BOSS documents the Markers with a previously unheard fidelity and orchestration. Idiosyncratic song structure and melodies interspersed with a destructive drum stomp are reminiscent of the early electrified blues of Junior Kimbrough, or the black hole rhythms of Kousokuya. Mixing a gentle vulnerability with a winded egomania, the Markers have always had a musical tunnel vision; BOSS is that vision made manifest. The tug of war the Markers enact, the way they are fully prepared to start yanking their world apart as they find themselves losing their place in, makes moot possibilities of greatness or mediocrity. It makes them unapologetic soothsayers with their ears pressed to the ground, waiting for footsteps. With Peter Nolan, we finally hear what Lou Reed would have sounded like had he sallied with the drums instead of getting seduced by the easy praise of front man status. Like Rashid Ali squeezed into the Teutonic leather pants of Faust, Nolan drums like there are hell hounds at his heels but he just cant be bothered. Here both laconic and frenzied, Nolans drumming arms reach out like an octopus: tickling the ivories, humming the organ and blasting taps on some kind of endtime trumpet. As a pianist, Nolan reminds us that the piano is a percussive, beating out the whoomp of some old war dance, a bare foot-fall rhythm of fighters to battle and the heavy hands of a whiskey burlesque in the afternoon. Nolan is easy to underestimate, but finally, here is high fidelity record of the strange soul of one of Americas most natural and quizzical musical minds." -Ecstatic Peace |

| "Magneticring is Josh Stevenson of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. "Debris Magnetiques" is the first in a series of "solo synth" tapes on Heavy Tapes. Here Josh uses a EMS Synthi, a cracklebox, and his ecstatic electromagnetic field to produce a cut up, deep sounding crack of electricity and momentum. Very different in flow and form from most Heavy Tapes releases, this focuses on the gush and rush and is a great head cleaner." - Heavy Tapes. |

Artist: MAHER SHALAL HASH BAZ Title: Cest La Derniere Chanson Format: Double CD Label: K Country: USA Price: $16.00 |
| "Tori Kudo, the conductor and band leader of MAHER SHALAL HASH BAZ, fuses stray elements of pop, folk, jazz and experimental music into pieces of candid musical gestures. Cest La Derniere Chanson is a double album of songs composed by Kudo between 2005-2007. For the recordings, Kudo assembled nine musicians from Japan and bunkered down for six days in St. Pierre-Eglise, France. Bassoon, guitar, drums, trumpet, trombone, clarinet, glass percussion, organ, rocks and sticks are expanded by a sophisticated counter-repetition technique into an extensive tonal range of colors; the effect is at turns serene, dissonant, enchanting, crisp, spacious and maddeningly catchy. The future of music on Planet Earth. Listen closely, please." - K Records. |

Artist: MAHER SHALAL HASH BAZ Title: Kunitachi Kibun (84 & 85) Format: CD Label: PSF Country: Japan Price: $21.00 |
| "Maher Shalal Hash Baz stand at the pinnacle of Tori Kudos eccentric and beguiling musical weltanschauung, a stew of soaring melodic genius, naïve wisdom and the eternal amateur freshness of left-footing your own brain. Emperors of error, indeed. Their very special talent has been recognized by a slew of underground labels across the world and garnered them famous friends and fans aplenty including The Pastels. But until now, the very earliest roots of the band have remained shrouded in misty tendrils of mystery. Kunitachi Kibun delves deep into the bands beginnings, presenting two previously unreleased gigs, including their first show from December 1984 when they played in a legendary triple header with High Rise and Kosokuya at the Kid Airaku Hall in Tokyo. The second show from six months later includes an appearance by the late alto saxophonist Masami Shinoda. Both soar with idiot-savant genius, Toris truly distinctive guitar and vocals creating their own idiot-savant networks of logic with the rest of the group. A stupendous glimpse into a simpler world of communal transcendence and music making." - Alan Cummings. |
|
Artist: MAHER SHALAL HASH BAZ Title: Live Aoiheya January 2003 Format: CD EP Label: Chapter Music Country: Australia Price: $12.00 |
| "Maher Shalal Hash Baz is the oddly-named band for Japanese cult figure Tori Kudo and his wife Reiko (the name is apparently a Hebrew biblical phrase that Tori translates as be quick if you mean to steal something). Since the late 1970s, Tori has been a pioneering figure in Japanese punk, post-punk and avant-garde circles, beginning with bands such as GuysnDolls, Cock CNell, Noise and Tokyo Suicide (a cover band dedicated to New York synth-punk pioneers Suicide). Tori formed Maher Shalal Hash Baz in the mid 80s with neighbours who could not play any instruments, and for the better part of 20 years has been pursuing a single-minded vision of music as simple, spontaneous and unpredictable. The bands always changing lineup of anywhere from three to thirty people features mostly untrained musicians playing music often shown to them on the day of its performance, expressing the innate beauty of failure as much as of success. The band began releasing records in 1989, but did not come to worldwide attention until a decade later, when their marvelously ambitious triple album Return Visit To Rock Mass was released. MSHB were invited to tour outside of Japan for the first time. In 1999, when UK label Geographic released From A Summer To Another Summer, a compilation of Maher recordings. Soon the band were touring the US and Europe regularly, and Geographic released their most recent album Blues Du Jour in 2003. Live Aoiheya January 2003 documents an entire brief performance by this unique band, incidentally the first Maher show that Chapter boss Guy Blackman saw after moving to live in Japan in 2002 (he returned to Melbourne in 2004). It captures the band in a variety of guises unusual even for them, including an extended abstract instrumental, songs based on conversations between band members, passages by Japanese composers, vocal relays and a Brahms Waltz. In the EPs 26 minutes Maher Shalal Hash Baz manage to cover more ground than most bands do in their whole career, all the while maintaining a spirit and idiosyncracy that is idenitifiably their own." - Chapter Music. |

Artist: MAHER SHALAL HASH BAZ WITH MASAMI SHINODA Title: Koshi Kudake No Inu Format: DVD Label: PSF Country: Japan Price: $25.00 |
| "Enticing archival document of an early (1987) show by wide-eyed mystics Maher Shalal Hash Baz at Kid Ailack Art Hall, Tokyo. The visuals provide a rare and valuable opportunity to pick apart the working methods of one of the Japanese undergrounds most truly original and agile thinkers, Tori Kudo. In Maher Shalal Hash Baz, he took the heterophonic voicings, the deliberately fluctuating rhythmic mis-steps and the non-unison unison so characteristic of Japanese traditional music and re-applied them to idiot savant mini-hymns arranged for electric guitar, euphonium, ocarina and organ. Its a music that exists in a unique world of its own, alternately donning and shedding the armor of rock and jazz. Another major draw is the presence of the late Masami Shinoda on alto sax. Shinoda was an important, though largely unsung, figure in the history of the Tokyo underground during the 80s and 90s, showing up in all manner of groups from punk iconoclasts Jagatara and Pungo, to his own experiments with chindon marching advertising bands. He spent a few years in Maher in the 80s and this DVD captures the innocent joy and rapturous invention he brought to their music. 24 tracks, 75 minutes. Color, NTSC Region Free (says Region 2 on the package, but that is a typo, it plays Region Free), Stereo, 08.09.21." -PSF |

Artist: MAHOGANY BRAIN Title: Some Cocktail Suggestions Format: LP Label: Fractal Country: France Price: $26.00 |
| "Brand new and third album by the 70s French underground free-rock cult band Mahogany Brain. Some Cocktail Suggestions (March 2005) is the logical and inevitable prolongation of the first two albums, With (Junk-Saucepan) When (Spoon-Trigger) (December 1970 - released in 1971) and Smooth Sick Lights (June 1972 - released in 1977), all in all the third shutter of a trilogy and which could be entitled: Mahogany Brain or how to play Russian roulette in the artificial paradises. Thirty-five years for an unexplainable trilogy. However, if one symbolically looks at the first album on Futura as the injection of drugs (the true original record cover was a photograph showing an arm with a syringe and following the stop to publish the famous stereotype for reason of censure of the time, the group chose an entirely black cover as a mourning). The second on Pôle (with the title wink in Sister Ray) would be rather the action as if the track headlight suggests which opens the album Green Winter of Revolvers which is the soundtrack of the crazy short film of Michel Bulteau Main Line. Mahogany Brain always developed a music radical, unforeseeable, hard, voluntarily unfinished, and with this album, they continue the adventure even further: decomposition of the music, recomposition of the juxtaposed voices, artistic blur, collages, mad guitars, all very amalgamated in a magma broken rocknroll. Mahogany Brain was created during the summer 1970, and was composed by two central personalities, the alter ego Michel Bulteau (leader and founder of the group) and Patrick Geoffrois (the man without whom Mahogany Brain could never have existed). Writer, film maker, Bulteau also carried out five albums in solo (whose Rinçures on Fractal in 1999) hes the last of the electric poets and his meeting with Geoffrois was also electric - Bulteau created a rock band but it is Geoffrois which created the dynamics of the group. Geoffrois was a sharp sectional view, and he recall a little the revolted and destroying spirit of a certain Peter Laughner (Rocket From The Tombs), he will join later the group of James Chance & the Contortions in New York at the end of the 70s or he will sow the discord besides! Two complementary strong energies and spontaneousness, the process was engaged. Mahogany Brain is an atypical group in the Parisian underground, they play with their tripes and as with their veins, it is an experience out of the limit, not-conventional, with only one concert in all their history, and probably the most subversive formation as there was to see in France! Some Cocktail Suggestions is incontestably matter dangerous? To taste with great whiskeys." - Fractal. Great record! |

| "First CD reissue of the long time deleted Mainliners second album featuring the legendary heavy psychedelic trio : Asahito Nanjo (bass, vocal), Makoto Kawabata (guitar), Tatsuya Yoshida (drums). Artist: MAJOR STARS Title: 4 Format: CD Label: Twisted Village Country: USA Price: $13.00 |
| "And here they are, spiralling thru their own universe but still occasionally sending a missive back down to earth. This one was recorded summer 03, after an intense period of touring (which also resulted in the Major Stars/Comets On Fire live split LP) and just before an intense period of reflection (read: inactivity). Somewhere during the latter they realized they had made a record, and finally we bring it to you. Calls for increased fidelity have not fallen on deaf ears: 4 brings them to the world of 24-track recording for the first time, finally getting their studio sound close to their live onslaught. Musically they continue to hit all points a little harder each time, with open-stringed folk melodies getting pummeled on the Who/Cream/Hendrix anvil til you think modal and heavy have always coexisted. Their best yet? You bet. Should they go deaf, it was all for you." - Twisted Village. |

Artist: MAJOR STARS Title: Black Road EP Format: 7" Label: Twisted Village Country: USA Price: $4.50 |
| "The story from where we left off: Major Stars play their most recent tour of the USA in May of 2003, return in June to make their definitive studio record (Major Stars 4), and then head to NYC a week later to record the Live In Europa split LP with Comets On Fire. All good so far. They unexpectedly lay low for for the next eighteen months, losing longtime drummer Dave Lynch along the way and ending up with an empty bassman spot when Tom Leonard joins Kate Village and Wayne Rogers in the guitar frontline. But then Major Stars mark two starts to come together. Casey Keenan (drummer-turned-guitarist of local pop heros Carlisle Sound) is roped into resuming his place behind the drumkit. Dave Dougan, already a veteran of the band as bass understudy (he was the unfamiliar figure on stage at their Terrastock 02 performance), returns to claim the position permanently. The new sextet is completed by the arrival of lead singer Sandra Barrett, formerly of local art-punk legends LA Drugs. By the time Major Stars 4finally appears to universal acclaim in April 2005, the new band is awake and pummeling the locals with renewed fervor. The future: a new LP is due to appear in the fall 2005, and Major Stars will be playing select east coast dates with Japanese psych titans Miminokoto and Uptight this October 2005. But why wait the summer in silence? Heres a two-track taster of heavy things to come." - Twisted VIllage. |

Artist: MAJOR STARS Title: Mirror/Messenger Format: LP Label: Drag City Country: USA Price: $16.00 |
| "Now giant-size and louder than ever, Major Stars plunge further down the path of their second, larger life with Mirror/Messenger. Their new sextet record features the same triple-guitar frontline and fervid vocalizations from Sandra Barrett as did 2006s Syntoptikon - but with more songs then ever before found on a single Major Stars album (as many as two albums, in several cases). Mirror/Messenger is an assault on popular music, with considerable muscle exerted to create a jukebox-ready duck-and-shuffle - if the needle dont get tossed out the groove, that is." - Drag City. LP version. |

Artist: MAJOR STARS Title: Return to Form Format: LP Label: Drag City Country: USA Price: $16.00 |
| "When youve got a love for music, theres no time to spare. The band called Major Stars all got other gigs that take them from place to place without room to converse much. Thats okay, because theyre about playing music, not small talkin! So whats been going on around the practice space then? Major Stars have a new one that might lay it on you all at once like a plank of solid stone, and theyre calling it Return to Form. Starting with a mid-fight schoolyard threat like Better Stay Down (what, no exclamation point?), Major Stars do definitely seem to be returning to somewhere on this new new album, maybe even perhaps somewhere adolescent where the rock and roll was never better? But really, titling the whole damn thing Return to Form has some humor in it. Mirror/Messenger wasnt out of form; all Major Stars records have been a part of a vision and even if some shit said he or she (probably he) didnt like it, that doesnt really call for a response title on the next album. We read it like this: its you whos returning to form! Major Stars atomized you to fucking bits on the last record and only now are you returning to a fully formed entity. And here Major Stars are to blow you to pieces again. Youre fucked up. Return to Forms got eight pieces, all heavy rocks, a few of them come with power jams. Theres also a few just under three minutes, but distinguished by riffage that lifts em up. The guitars trio of Wayne Rogers, Kate Village and Tom Leonard is into their third full album as such, allowing them to have fused into a wall of distorto with a myriad of identities but singular purpose. Behind their ubiquitous combination signal, the drums trample with pummelous authority. Still, they cant help but sound a bit crushed by the din, glorious din. This is Major Stars signature rock of the easties -- more likened to the sounds of Motorpsycho than any of that psych-rock these days! Again, this is organic growth, home territory. Could it be that the space you know is better than the space you dont know? Major Stars got answer, and its Return to Form." - Drag City. |

Artist: MAJOR STARS Title: Rock Revival,The Format: CD Label: Twisted Village Country: USA Price: $13.00 |
| "Major Stars, men (and woman) who have made many records, up the pile one more with The Rock Revival. Guitarists Wayne & Kate come to Major Stars straight from Magic Hour, whose quick ascent from snarly West Coast-influenced rock band to all instrumental thugs brought many a tear To helpless Galaxie 500 fans. Bassist Tom Leonard has been at one time or another a member of every non-Magic Twisted Village ensemble, and Dave laid down the big beat in Vermonster. Now that these four have reconvened, they are taking their LOUD polystructural ROCK to the people. The Rock Revival consists of four songs. The first, Rock Revival Theme, is a purely free bit of tape captured at one of their bi-weekly recording sessions. On follows, a lovely little tune that then gets masterfully deconstructed for 13+ minutes. Strange Reaction is the token short song that sets up the epic Deep End, their live instrumental tour-de-force. Throughout the disc they jump in and out of structure and freedom like no other post-Isle Of Wight rock ensemble can. And theyre that loud. Really. Go see them fuck up the upcoming Terrastock in SF."-Twisted Village. |

Artist: MAJOR STARS Title: Space/Time Format: CD Label: Twisted Village Country: USA Price: $13.00 |
| "Space/Time is the Major Stars second full length attempt to explode the boundaries of Rock-with-a-capital-R. Side one features two songs with pickin and singin: Apples To Grapes is a moody folk rock number that gets blown apart in a hurry & subjected to several improvisational deconstructions in the course of its 14+ minutes, and Runout is done up short n pretty to set you up for the all-instrumental Side Two. Getting Air From A Stone is a riff heavy cruncher, while Dream Of The Accidental Bird follows its brief opening revolving door with a massive & exhilarating one chord jam thatll twist your insides just right. The CD adds one track from their now out-of-print debut 12" Rock Sounds Of People -- the pounding Its A Blessing, Brother, I Cannot Lie, a song so relentlessly single minded that the band was asked daily who the hell it was a cover of (Wayne, in fact, wrote it...in far less time than it took to play it). Major Stars aim to take higher-key improvisational wizardry and clobber you on the head with it while simultaneously caressing your mind. Space/Time does just that."-Twisted Village. |

| "Acid Mothers Temple main man Kawabata Makoto links up with LSD March guitarist Michishita Shinsuke to create another amazing platter of fantastic sounds and vibes. Maru Sankaku Shikaku (Circle Triangle Square) finds the duo moving on from the electric guitars of their previous duo releases to an all acoustic album featuring ethnic instruments from around the globe. Based around hushed, mellow guitar drones and hypnotic, yet restrained guitar wails, Kokura captures the sound of life beneath a hurricane. Like Sunn O))) on half volume!" - Riot Season. |

Artist: MAKOTO, KAWABATA Title: Rainbow Of Love Format: LP Label: Blackest Rainbow Country: UK Price: $18.00 |
| "Blackest Rainbow Records is extremely pleased to announce this one. Brand new solo record from one of the most prolific Japanese recording artists around right now. Most people will know Kawabata Makoto as the guitar-wielding shredder from Acid Mothers Temple. This brand new solo recording is a two piece epic of some of the most beautiful tones Ive heard in a while. Side As You Are From The Rainbow Over The Sea is a piece of bowed beauty, taking you to a higher plain of consciousness. The B-sides Waiting For You Till The End Of The Rainbow is just as cosmic as its predecessor, with cascading waterfalls of tones washing over you again and again. Kinda reminds me of some of the Inui series, which is probably some of my favorite material from Makoto. Edition of only 300 copies." -Blackest Rainbow |

Artist: MALARIA! Title: Compiled 1981-1984 Format: CD Label: Moabit Country: GERMANY Price: $14.50 |
| 2001 year release which compiles 16 tracks from all their early releases, originally released 1981-84. Malaria were an all-female art-wave group from Berlin, with connections to Die Haut, Einsturzende, Nina Hagen, Static, etc. A seminal early 80s document. "Contagious diseases, uncertain modes of transmission: Malaria evolved from Mania D., a trio that had already gained a following even without music through their style and artwork. When they expanded into a quintet, they not only retained the first two letters, recurring in medieval, mask, magister artium and mama, they also kept a world of signifiers: heat, illness, fever, ill-defined states. At the time, the beat and the saxophone, which signalled the continuity of both bands, could only be comprehended through inevitable misunderstandings and other contemporary beats and sounds. And -- like an italicised letter -- they incarnated the promise contained in the title: elusive funk, undeveloped jazz, an unresolved and strained insistence on a difference for which no words existed at the time, and certainly no music that one could put a name to." - Diedrich Diederichsen. |
|
Artist: MALCOLM, GREG Title: Hung Format: CD Label: C/Psi/P Country: New Zealand Price: $17.00 |
| "Recorded live, without the cumbersome weight of newfangled techniques such as overdubs (gee-whiz!) which may seem a little commonplace for you hip-to-be-square cats until you realise that the good Mr Malcolm plays two guitars and percussion with his feet. His third guitar, the guitar he actually holds in his hands, has about half a million strings and a number of contact mics imbedded where the sun-dont-shine to amplify a host of springs, triangles, and other junkyard ephemera. This is a second-to-none ride through a world of sunshine, as viewed through net curtains from a darkened room in suburban New Zealand. Charming, stupifying, and profoundly accomplished. The noise of music!" - C/Psi/P. |

Artist: MALLANDER, J.O. Title: More Time - Hits & Variations 1968-1970 Format: CD Label: Anoema Country: Finland Price: $17.50 |
| "Anoema Recordings is proud to present a complete collection of sound works by the influential Finnish artist J.O.Mallander. (This CD) collects two sought-after vinyl EPs Extended Play and Decompositions (the only Finnish entries in BROKEN MUSIC catalog), and a previously unreleased piece. J.O.Mallander began his artistic activities in 1960s within the blooming Finnish Underground movement, taking part, amongst other things, in the notorious music-performance collective SPERM. He has since assumed a multitude of roles within the world of art, operating as an artist, critic, writer, gallerist, and curator. Through his international connections he became a singular node of the FLUXUS network in Finland. Extended Play, released in 1968, was his debut as an artist. It is simultaneously an intriguing aural ready-made, a mantra-like tape piece, and a commentary echoing the Finnish cultural climate of the day. It displays in torturing detail the drama surrounding the presidential elections in 1962 and 1968. These pieces have haunted the Finnish popular consciousness for decades, and probably caused more complex reactions than any other Finnish sound work. In 1968 Mallander opted for life in the more internationally inclined Stockholm. Among other activities he composed a mind-boggling plunderphonic collage In Reality at the prestigious premises of EMS for Text-Sound Festival held at Fylkingen. And two years after Extended Play, in 1970, it was time to confuse the Finnish audience again. Mallander issued his second (and so far the last) music release Decompositions on the legendary LOVE Records. Applying scratching, looping, and other manipulations on records he created a hilariously energizing work and pre-dated the methods and attitudes of contemporary popular musics. More Time - Hits & Variations 1968-1970 comes packed in the original cover designs and features extensive liner notes by Leif Elggren. The times they are not a-changin." - Anoema Recordings. Mallander is also featured on the amazing "Arktinen Hysteria: Suomi-avantgarden Esipuutarhureita" CD comp issued a few years back on Love Records. Highly recommended! |

Artist: MAMMAL Title: Double Nature Format: CD Label: SNSE Country: USA Price: $10.00 |
| "Mammal s fog-powered sonic dispersal units yield some serious fuzz force on this, the follow-up to 2002s Fog Walkers LP (SNSE021). Electronicaly processed signal and modulated ring power the mix, while hazed distorto screech propels the re-routed beat device attack. These are the most viciously raw, real Mammal sounds to date. WARNING: Originally intended for release as a vinyl LP only, this recording was turned away by no less than three mastering engineers, all of whom refused to cut the disc out of fear of damaging or destroying their cutting needles due to the "extreme" nature of the sounds. Mammal and SNSE bear no responsibility for damage to your hearing and/or stereo equipment resultant from the playing of this monster." - SNSE. |

| "MAMMATUS are a new four piece rock band from Santa Cruz, California. The album consists of four long tracks, the longest, "Dragon of the Deep Part 2" clocks in at a staggering 25 minutes long. With an excess of fuzz and wah noise they manage to combine all the best b-its of 70s psychedelic rock with the sonic attack of early Monster Magnet as they simultaneously enter the realm of heavy drone sludge rock. The sleeve of this album was crafted by ARIK ROPER who has also worked with likes of Sleep, Sunn O))), Comets on Fire and Arthur Magazine. Since forming at the begining of 2005 Mammatus have been playing regularly in their native town of Santa Cruz and in venues in San Fransisco, which has gathered them lots of praise and interest. Artist: MAMMATUS Title: The Coast Explodes Format: CD Label: Holy Mountain Country: USA Price: $13.00 |
| "MAMMATUS second album The Coast Explodes straddles the line between psychedelia and hard rock while introducing more progressive aspects. The music is heavily influenced by both the power and complexity of the natural world and the ongoing battles of light and darkness. "Excellent Swordfight" is a continuation of the same story told in the debuts epic "Dragon of the Deep." "Pierce the Darkness" explores being a light in a dark world. "The Changing Wind" is a pipe-led psychedelic folk tune that could have been sited by Ghosts Second Time Around and the shanga vibes of the forest in the Autumn. It unfurls into the title track which encapsulates the massive fury of the ocean. For fans of similar Holy Mountain artists Om, Lesbian, or Residual Echoes." - VHF. "The same heavy, spastic psych as Acid Mothers Temple, Psychic Paramount, Comets on Fire and Green Milk from the Planet Orange."-Dusted Magazine. |
|
Artist: MAMMUT Title: S/T Format: LP Label: Long Hair Country: Germany Price: $32.00 |
| "Originally released in 1971, this album is an intense and bombastic hybrid between heavy fuzz acid guitar, instinctive free rock improvisations and some lyrical, classical influenced interludes/fragments. Mammut played in an impressive and convincing manner their conception of an psychedelic rock opera. For that each title includes the name Mammut. The opening track Bird Mammut is a groovy, percussive, crazy psychedelic affair featuring an avalanche of drums, trippy organs, bluesy e-guitar and wistful flute passages. Classical Mammut delivers a short piano interlude, a pleasant melodic moment. Mammut Ecstasy is a fuzzy heavy psychedelic composition with furious rhythms, an efficient bass guitar leading theme and some nice keyboard moves. Foot Machine Mammut alternates a bluesy pop song with free guitar jams accompanied by Hammond organ. Perhaps parts of the first Embryo album are comparable to this. Nähgarn Mammut" is their attempt to be more lyrical and melodic, while the album closes with 14 minutes of Mammut Opera, which show Mammut at their best. Dark sounds with hints of Amon Düül II, heavy blues rock with all sorts of strange, ethnic and gothic touches combined in their music. Altough the band themselves quoted Deep Purple in rock as a major influence, their spirit was purely Krautrock. Their sole album is a legendary rarity. Comes with 1 bonus track, comprehensive insert, digitally remastered. A classic! Don´t miss it!" -Long Hair |

Artist: MAN FOREVER Title: S/T Format: LP Label: St. Ives Country: USA Price: $14.00 |
| "Recorded by Kid Millions (Oneida) over a weekend after seeing the Fireworks Ensembles performance of Ulrich Kriegers transcription of Metal Machine Music, Man Forever is the maelstrom on the surface of a river. Kid Millions writes: "A few months ago I went to see Fireworks Ensemble perform Metal Machine Music, I read the liner notes for the show, listened to the original record and learned how the piece was originally recorded. During the performance I was inspired to record an album right away. A conversation Id had a year or so ago with Brian Chase (from the YYYs) about just intonation tuning with drums popped into my head and I visualized a monolithic recording that would utilize the rich tonality of carefully tuned acoustic drums, played powerfully and multi-tracked at different speeds onto the Ocropolis (Oneidas Brooklyn Studio) 16 track 1" tape machine. I asked Brian Chase to come to the studio and help me tune my drums so I could capture my ambition for the piece. Richard Hoffman (Sightings) added some bass to the final mix. The tempo is something like 180BPM. The piece moves fast at an almost imperceptible rhythm. It feels overwhelming and fluctuates constantly. Turn it up!" -Kid Millions |
|
Artist: MAN PACK VARIENT Title: Sticky Wickets Format: CDR Label: Digitalis Country: USA Price: $10.00 |
| "Manpack Variant is the persistently intermittent commingling of electronicists Jaime Fennelly (Peeesseye, peeinmyfacewithsurgery, Phantom Limb & Bison) and Chris Peck, resulting in transcendent sound rituals and unexplainable detritus such as the recent "Flash Vault" 7" split with Gerritt on Misanthropic Agenda and now "Sticky Wickets," the bands first full-length CD. "Sticky Wickets" will take the paint off your walls. Bone-crunching noises fly in an analog heaven, short on altitude but high on fire? Insanity? Asylums? Try it all on for size. Manpack Variant are bringing barrels of concrete to the show, ready to build a scuzzed-out monument complete with skeleton electronics and bags of fuzz. And to add even more sparkle, "Sticky Wickets" features original artwork by Jason McLean. Entranced by latent characteristics of military-industrial sound hardware, Manpack Variant has laid audiences from Vienna to Vancouver (to waste) with there own special bland of ecstatic nose drool. Ambient ambient ambient! Ambient ambient ambient! Four years now they have failed to either get a sharper blade or have a new one made. Take a load off: the album woks!" - Digitalis |

Artist: MANIACS DREAM Title: S/T Format: Cass Label: Lal Lal Lal Country: Finland Price: $6.50 |
| "This wild group is a distant relative of Avarus. Maniacs Dream think they are playing punk rock but all they can catch on tape is dizzying, swirling and tumbling lunacy. They dont know how some of the sounds ended up on tape, the sounds have just somehow emerged from somewhere. But still there is a logic deep in all this. Relentless energy and a constant flow of ideas, some of them good, some of them something else. And these are hi-fi 4-track recordings. This is the fresh and exciting sound of the 21st century!" - Lal Lal Lal. |
|
Artist: MANIACS DREAM Title: Turku Hold em Format: CD Label: Lal Lal Lal Country: Finland Price: $16.50 |
| "A 66 minute excerpt from a 2 hour session from 2005. Recorded in the middle of the night after christmas - the result being the most detailed mess this trio has ever made. Bella is banging the drums naked, releasing lots of skin power. Fricara is giving the bass some feedback and Hesedelic is playing guitar very, very fast." - Lal Lal Lal |
|
Artist: MANIACS DREAM Title: Zanzibar Format: LP Label: Arbor Country: USA Price: $14.00 |
| "Finland is the epicenter of collective music-making. Under the name Maniacs Dream, members of a variety of Finnish bands such as Avarus, Fricara Pacchu, Kemialliset Ystävät, and more come together to create blown-out free rock (not your typical stoner guitar jams). Their unique/bizarre approach to music-making constantly questioning the construction/deconstruction of sound creates songs at times recalling the electro-acoustic clatter drone of Avarus crossed with tribal rhythms and intergalactic guitar zones. Total sonic freedom with a punk ethos directly influenced by a trip to Zanzibar prior to recording this record (which is a reissue of the long sold-out tape originally released on Lal Lal Lal in 2006). In an edition of 450 records on light blue vinyl with printed labels and full color pro-printed fold-over sleeves with art by Benjamin Bergman and an insert." - Arbor |

Artist: MANIAX Title: The Lost Tapes Format: CD Label: Palo Alto Country: USA Price: $11.00 |
| "In the annals of Hardcore Punk history, there are certain bands who stumbled their way on to many vinyl and cassette compilations of the early eighties that stuck out so severely you just had to ask yourself Why?. Although their intention and sentiment fit right in with the Reagan Sucks/Drugs Suck/You Suck vibe of the time, their ineptitude and spirit created something so unique that it hit a vein of expression that was entirely of its own. None of the mask sporting pre-conceiving art wavers of the time could have come up with statements as effortlessly bizarre as the ones presented by such brave and confused one hit compilation wonders as Church Police, B.I.U, and Demented Youth. On the tipity top of that teetering list is Fresno Californias Maniax who supplied us with the beyond classic anthem Off to War on the beyond classic Not So Quiet on the Western Front double LP compilation in 1982. For nigh on twenty five years now, this track has intrigued the fuck outta me. With the fidelity lower than whale dung, a truly buzzsaw guitar battles for space with a barely pubescent vocalist who drones on and on reciting the words Off to War over and over again for a good five minutes. I always wondered if their other songs were this disorienting and wonderful. Well, I need not wonder no more! Maniax vocalist Gregg Mitchell has finally found the time to share with us the lost tapes of Fresnos youngest early 80s Punk band and its every thing Ive dreamed it would be and more. 34 tracks of bedroom recorded early teenaged Punk Rock anthems about dead dogs, posers and having a crush on Wendy O. Williams. Are they using an air organ on track 29? What the fuck? THE MOST ESSENTIAL AND NEEDED POSTHUMOUS PUNK ROCK RELEASE OF OUR CENTURY AND I MEAN THAT. Even though I really hate how nothing of the past is left to the imagination anymore these days, I gotta say my brain is exhausted after twenty something years of wondering what those other Maniax tracks sounded like. Thanks for the rest, Gregg." -- Tony Rettman. |

Artist: MANSON FAMILY Title: The Family Jams Format: Picture Disc LP Label: Elite Hunting Country: USA Price: $34.00 |
| "The lost acid-folk "desert music" songs of Charles Manson, recorded during his trial in 1970 by Family members Clem on guitar and vocals, Gypsy on violin, and featuring the ultra-ethereal vocals of Gold and Country Sue. Artwork by Adam Parfrey and Robert N. Taylor, with included postcard. Very limited pressing of 500 copies, German import." -Elite Hunting. |

Artist: MANTICORES BREATH Title: Manticores Breath Format: 10" Label: Missing Vinyl Country: Greece Price: $34.00 |
| "Manticores Breath is Will-o-the Wisp, who have outgrown their old name and musical style. It is heavier, louder and more mature than their previous works, but still in their well-known UK early 70s progressive direction. This 10" LP contains two 8 minute-long tracks with great rhythm and fuzz guitars, organ and powerful English vocals. Both tracks are impressive and this record will most probably become a sought-after rarity, like their previous ones. 450 pieces limited and numbered edition, deluxe 10" with 2 covers." - Missing Vinyl. |

Artist: MANTLES Title: Pink Information Format: LP Label: Mexican Summer Country: USA Price: $22.00 |
| "Incredible jangle-pop that conducts a druggy seance for the spirit of Gene Clark. A collectors dream, these San Francisco visionaries have released an incredible series of singles on Duc-I-Tone, Slumberland, and Slitbreeze. Shades of LA 66, New Zealand 82 and London 86 dance around each other in a delirious, druggy waking dream. Truly beautiful stuff." - Mexican Summer. |
|
Artist: MANTLES Title: S/T Format: LP Label: Siltbreeze Country: USA Price: $15.00 |
| "With two acclaimed seven-inches under their belt, THE MANTLES answer the call for more with a stunning debut LP sure to please all who cross its path. The Mantles have been dead-on in distilling a contemporary pop / psych concoction that mixes equal parts early Chills with early Dream Syndicate-and really, who among us wouldnt want a bottle of that with which to quietly tipple the day away? Recorded by GREG ASHLEY, the LP taps said hybrid, and if anything, burrows deeper into the core of rock, extracting essential magma that fuses early SF Ballroom psychedelia, Byrds-ian jangle-pop, and the Velvet Undergrounds extraordinary ability for serpentine leads and bridges. And yep, that pretty much covers all the bases. The band is currently on their first US tour supporting Ty Segall coast to coast. LP includes free digital download." -Siltbreeze |

Artist: MANY BRIGHT THINGS Title: Many Bright Friends Format: LP Label: Gates Of Dawn Country: USA Price: $22.00 |
| "The idea of the Supersession album dates back to 1968 with Al Koopers LP with Michael Bloomfield and Steve Stills. Fast forward thirty-seven years to the new album by Many Bright Things. It opens with the twenty-second title track, followed by the twenty-minute centerpiece: The Paul Butterfield Bands John Coltrane/Ravi Shankar-inspired masterpiece, East West. Across its twenty minutes and forty-four seconds no fewer that FIVE guitarists step into the center ring with solos that begin with Larry Demyer (Windopane) and include back-to-back fiery electric sermons by Nick Saloman (Bevis Frond) and Al Simones. The Silver Witch is written and performed by Alisha Sufit (Magic Carpet) accompanied by Frank DeFina on a beautiful Stephen Gilchrist F-5 mandolin. We think this song opens the second side of the vinyl as nicely as Within You Without You opened side two of Sgt. Pepper. Alishas voice reminds us of our dreams of angels. A tamboura drone and tabla accompaniment (by Paul Tescher) are the foundation for Minor Parade for 18 Strings and a duet between Stan Denskis acoustic 12-string Guild guitar and Paul Majors lead electric. Stan Denski & Larry Demyer play guitars, David Tufty Clough (Zero Boys) adds bass and Lon Paul (Marmoset) adds percussion, all of which form the ground upon which Jello Biafra (The Dead Kennedys) improvises observations on rare psychedelic music on I Am Not a Collector Potato! We guarantee youve never heard anything quite like this. The CD adds the ambient bonus track There Will Be a Slight Delay." - Gates Of Dawn. CD also available. |

Artist: MARANHA, DAVID Title: Antarctica Format: LP Label: Roaratorio Country: USA Price: $17.00 |
| "David Maranhas recordings stretch back over 20 years with the Portuguese avant trio Osso Exótico, as well as collaborations with Zev and Minit. A follow up to Marches Of The New World (2007), Antarctica is made up of two side-long excursions into monolithic drone-rock. In the vein of Tony Conrad & Faust, Venus In Furs, La Monte Young and Terry Riley, Maranhas ensemble is driven by keyboards, strings, and hypnotized-heartbeat percussion. Like the great white expanse of the titular continent, it can be taken in simply as a glorious wash of sound; listen to it closely, however, and youll hear the smallest details jump out in high relief: a feather can move a mountain. An edition of 300 hand-numbered copies in silkscreened covers. Digital download coupon included." - Roaratorio. |

Artist: MARBLE SHEEP Title: Tokyo 1988 Format: CD Label: Dirter Promotions Country: UK Price: $16.50 |
| "Brand new re-mastered and expanded edition of this long out-of-print seminal live CD from Japans Marble Sheep (or to give them their full title on this release: Marble Sheep and the Run-Down Suns Children). This was originally issued by Cold Spring back in 1995, and sold out within a week of release. This classic Marble Sheep line-up boasts the inclusion of some giants of the Japanese scene. Members of Zeni Geva, Incapacitants and Hijokaidan all grace the CD for this blistering performance. This is by no means a noise release though - it is incendiary Japanese rock music in the tradition of the likes of High Rise, Fushitsusha and Acid Mothers Temple. The CD is lavishly housed in a beautiful mini-LP gloss laminated sleeve, with brand new full color artwork. It is rounded off with the inclusion of two previously unreleased tracks from the same period in the bands history. The special mini-LP packaging is exclusive to the first 1000 copies." -Dirter. |

Artist: MARCHETTI, WALTER Title: De Musicorum Infelicitate Format: Book/Double LP Label: Alga Marghen Country: ITALY Price: $66.00 |
| "Two years ago Alga Marghen issued the third compact disc by Walter Marchetti, the mysterious and inaccessible De musicorum infelicitate. The edition included a folded poster with the presentation written by Gabriele Bonomo, a series of aphorisms to introduce the listeners to this work. The composer had then decided to let this edition circulate with no extra information looking at it as a perfect final statement. But a complete score was existing, and what a score. And it took several months to convince him to let it be printed as a book in order to provide a new perspective to this multi-layer cryptic unhappiness of music. For this is not only the score of a great composition but also a series of statements which help us to enter the composers epistemology and his point of view about music, creation and our contemporary condition in general. Now as we approach the end, music seems to hasten our pace; now that the word is mantled in a vast cloak incessant vibrations and, sadly, everything is becoming music; now it was the perfect right time to issue this precious book. A book with no poetic moments, never obscured by art, never the servant of art, meant to give an immediate image of music. Such a book could only be published as a high quality industrial object, album hardbound, 200 pages in DIN A 4 size, published in English and Italian, issued in an edition limited to 300 copies only. Music! Deadly dust for the mind. The world as music: a cosmic catastrophe. At this point, music remains in possession of only a single sound; all the others have been discarded. The last sound is recorded on the double-LP, as well as the complete painful variations previously issued on the Alga Marghen CD with the same title." - Alga Marghen. |
|
Artist: MARCHETTI, WALTER Title: Utopia Andata e Ritorno Format: Double CD Label: Alga Marghen Country: Italy Price: $36.00 |
| "Music: the foundation of that presence in which we find ourselves shows itself as pure negative. Everything is founded on a demonstration of its own negativity: as awareness of its being negative, and does not look for an escape into a future presence, that is an objective future. But, accepting its negativity, makes of this self-negation the real act, the true reality - the true foundation, the real and actual continuity: this is musics sense. Utopia Andata e Ritorno is the title of the new composition by Walter Marchetti, recorded in Milano in 2005. It has two parts, each one CD long. The first part, LAndata, puts together two former recordings of Marchetti. The recording of a real storm and a recital for solo piano. This is not the first time that Marchetti mixes a piano solo recital with the recording of a natural live event, thus creating a piano concert. The second CD, Il Ritorno, reverses the direction of the first record and literally destroys itself. In the first part of this work, Marchetti puts music successfully in the place it has to have today: on the road to renewal in contact with reality, a reality that is a synonym for vacuity, that is the interdependence of phenomena, music, reality, technology. There is nothing mimetic or anecdotal in this work. The storm is a real storm and the solo piano recital is a modern work of pure music, without the excesses that the society expects of a piano recital from composer and virtuoso player. Pure music, in the best sense of the word. Three-folded digipack 2CD edition. It includes a 32-page booklet with essays by Water Marchetti, Gabriele Bonomo and José Luis Castillejo. First edition limited to 500 copies." - Alga Marghen. |

Artist: MARCLAY, CHRISTIAN Title: Guitar Drag Format: LP Label: Neon Gallery Country: Sweden Price: $25.00 |
| Soundtrack from the video Guitar Drag, 2000. Recorded in San Antonio Texas, on November 18th 1999. 12" one-sided transparent vinyl. 14 minutes. "The record is actually the soundtrack for Marclays video with the same title that was shown first at Londons Hayward Gallery sound art exhibition Sonic Boom in 2000. The piece as well as Marclay has become an icon in sound art circles, and although the video can only be seen in exhibitions as an installation, it is widely known. The full 14-minute soundtrack is released on a beautiful 12" clear vinyl record packaged in a sleeve with stills from the video. Filmed in San Antonio Texas, it shows an amplified Fender Stratocaster guitar attached to a rope being pulled behind a pick-up truck. As the guitar drags across the road it produces a range of sounds from the bumping and the friction against the varied surfaces. A fantastic visual piece, but also an amazing sound piece, that stands just as well alone, and in some ways just as visual! From the first sounds of duct-tape being ripped, the familiar sound of someone gently slamming the strings of the guitar, to the sounds of an engine starting and then slowly the beginning of a sound that is hollow and at the same time human, and that takes us through the deepest roarings to high pitched screams until the very end when it all slows down and stops, unwillingly it seems. Knowing the story behind the work or not, the sound itself triggers your imagination, leaving your soul no peace. For even if this could be seen, or heard, solely as a beautiful noisy sound piece, there is too much to the idea behind Guitar Drag, for it to not leave you restless and thoughtful." - Neon Gallery. |

Artist: MARHAUG, LASSE Title: One Eye and Watching Format: 7" Label: Melektronikk Country: NORWAY Price: $6.00 |
| "Lasse Marhaug should be know to all fans of leftfield electronic music and noise by now. The last couple of years he has used most of his time in the lower-case electronica duo Jazzkammer. Jazzkammer has released albums on Rune Grammofon and Smalltown Supersound. Outside Jazzkammer Marhaug has collaborated with artists like Aube, Merzbow and Kevin Drumm." - Melektronikk. |
|
Artist: MARHAUG, LASSE & FEILER, DROR Title: No More Drama Format: LP Label: No Fun Country: USA Price: $16.00 |
| "Edited live recordings, sometimes sounds like a borbetomagus storm, sometimes sounds like being in the middle of a bombing in Palestine. A Picture of this record should be next to every definition of Noise music. Lasse Marhaug plays in Jazkamer and has at least 300 other great projects solo and with other people. Dror Feiler served as a paratrooper in the Israel Defense Forces, and refused to serve in the occupied territories in the early 70s. He is now a Swedish-Israeli musician and artist and has been living in Stockholm, Sweden since 1973. He is active as a composer of modern music and enjoys giving ear problems and headaches to classically trained musicians. The most brutal vinyl record you will hear this year. Limited to 300 copies." -No Fun |
|
Artist: MARR DEL Title: The Mystery of Love Format: LP Label: MSP Country: USA Price: $20.00 |
| "Accurately described as "sparse cosmic female real people" by the guy who invented this type of descriptions. Her voice is somewhat arch and lofty, but the refined, serious mood is effective. Acoustic guitar and autoharp, some songs, some spoken poetry with musical backing and occasional sounds of nature such as rain and thunder." - Douglas McGowan. Sealed, original copies from 1979. |
|
Artist: MARS Title: 78+ Format: CD Label: Atavistic Country: USA Price: $13.50 |
| "Crucial document of this seminal NYC band from the late 70s, considered by many in retrospect to be the most influential no wave band from the era. A quartet of Sumner Crane, China Burg, Mark Cunningham & Nancy Arlen, they recorded revolutionary EPs for Ze and Lust/Unlust, as well as contributing to the infamous No New York LP." - FE. "To the uninitiated, Mars may sound like listening to a laundromat magnified. Thats because every instrument is making a sound, but who is making which sound? Instead of one direct sound or beat the music travels in at least 3 different directions, speeds of rhythm making a totally orbital sound, one that never really enters the ear instead spinning around the head. At times it sounds like tortured children singing in 7 different tongues." --Stella Doon, 1977. |
|
Artist: MARS Title: Mars LP: The Complete Studio Recordings NYC 1977-1978 Format: CD Label: No More Country: USA Price: $15.00 |
| "The Mars LP is the definitive collection of the 32 minutes of studio recordings released between 1977 and 1979 on vinyl by the first of the no wave bands. Supervised by the surviving members, remastered from original sources without any added effects, and packaged with detailed notes and lyrics, the Mars LP is an effort to recuperate the groups legacy and make up for the unavailability of these tracks in their original sound." "Static transmissions from a distant dark star. Taking up and tripping out further than the Velvet Undergrounds Black Angel Death Song , Mars punished not with blunt force, but with a propulsive agitation which signaled a neurological insanity. A crippled tension swathed in nervous friction. A cavernous musical universe riddled with eerie sound storms whose poisoned atmosphere seduced and threatened. Obtuse and unforgiving. Sickly sexy. Red noise redefining bass urges, forcing the listener to question their own sanity by drilling into ear holes using electroshock guitars as saw blades trepanning into grey matter. Mars unleashed a choking cacophony illustrating the body as machine in disrepair fuelled by the impending repulsion and disintegration of a perverse romance with ones own demons. Demons who once wrenched free, made mimicry of the jangling nerve centers, and given voice as song, turned schizophrenic and howled these testimonials to the unbearable." -- Lydia Lunch. "[note: Mars LP is the title, but this is a CD only release]. Includes their first single on Rebel/Ze, the No New York tracks, the Mars EP on Lust/Unlust -- their complete discography. This CD should be considered as an alternative to the still-valid Mars 78+ CD on Atavistc -- this one features all the original recordings as intended, with all the Thirlwell sound reprocessing of the Atavistic CD eliminated." - FE. |

Artist: MARTIAL CANTEREL Title: Refuge Underneath Format: CD Label: Wierd Country: USA Price: $12.00 |
| "Wierd Records is proud to present Martial Canterels first full-length CD release entitled Refuge Underneath, a compilation of the artists first two long-deleted self-released cassette tapes Drilling Backwards (2006) and Sister Age (2004) as well as 5 previously unreleased tracks, all digitally re-mastered. Over the past 5 years the state of electronic music has seen artists slowly remove themselves from their work and visceral musical expression in general. Traditional electronic machines have been replaced by the computer as the dominant generator of contemporary sounds. It is in this climate that Sean McBride, aka Martial Canterel, began performing at bars, clubs and private parties in Brooklyn, NY in 2002, functioning singlehandedly as the pioneer and instigator of what has now become a new movement of minimal electronic bands in the United States. Martial Canterel records and performs using only vintage analogue synthesizers and sequencers, producing a highly-crafted, complex, and idiosyncratic form of electronic music that is simultaneously romantically melancholic and affirmatively aggressive. Inspired both by the first wave of relatively unknown minimal electronic bands in Northern Europe(a musical genre also often referred to as minimal synth) and the seminal industrial noise bands such as Throbbing Gristle, SPK, and Cabaret Voltaire, Martial Canterel presents a new optimistic paradigm for electronic music in which the analogue synthesizer functions anew as a folk instrument of humanist resistance to a virtual soft synth, iPod, and iTunes saturated world of click and drag dematerialized abstraction." - Wierd. |

Artist: MARTIN, ROBERT Title: Long Goodbye Format: LP Label: Yik Yak Country: USA Price: $14.00 |
| "I first heard ROBERT MARTINs Long Goodbye while surrounded by friends. Even over the din of voices rallying to quantify, qualify, contain, bag and tag what we were all hearing, I was sure Id never heard anything quite like it. Long Goodbye opens with some broken acoustic noodling that sounds like a Derek Bailey slow motion replay, over which a double-tracked cry of voices transmits mournfully, meticulously, and with an unnerving sense of purpose. From there it gets stranger and more beautiful, as Martin sings with unique abandon-is there such a thing as sad joy?-often wordlessly, frequently incoherently. The tunefulness of Martins achingly beautiful voice sits in sharp contrast to the crudely played guitar, and sets Martin apart from his lamentably more in the know contemporaries. There are few touchstones for the magic contained herein-Bobb Trimble at his most wounded, Tony Caro and Johns All On The First Day LP, the earliest blues recordings of Guitar Roberts-but Martins intensely private music is all his own. And now, ours to share."-James Jackson Toth San Francisco, July 2007. |

Artist: MASATO, MINAMI Title: The Tropics Format: CD Label: Showboat/Sky Station Country: Japan Price: $28.00 |
| "2nd CD reissue from Showboat of this classic Japanese underground folk-rock album, originally released by RCA Japan in 1971. Great mini-LP gatefold packaging, but very few made and not long for this world. "The Tropics was Minami Masatos first record on which he got assisted by Mizutani Takeshi of the Rallizes Denudes, his only appearance on record ever. Minami Masato was one of Japans first beatnik hippie scum singers, who before venturing into the music world, spent some time in Mexico where he indulged himself in the narcotic goodies the country had to offer, went to America and witnessed in 1964 the rise of the beatnik movement and saw one of Bob Dylans early performances. Minamis life would never be the same again. He crossed the Atlantic Ocean, criss-crossed through Europe and returned to Tokyo in 1966. He participated at the 1968 Kyoto Folk Jamboree Festival. However, his debut single did not appear until October 1969, followed by a second single in 1970. This album, his debut appeared in July 1971 for which he got assisted by a loose collective of fan musicians and befriended artists. Hadaka no Rallizes Mizutani Takeshi was such a fan collaborator since he was quite in awe for what Minami stood for, being the unattached beatnik and drugged singer-songwriter he was. He let loose some ear shattering electric guitar on the albums closing track. This is the sole recorded output of Mizutani on disc. At least officially, if one ignores the dozen bootlegs and unofficially released music of his (like the Arthur Doyle-Mizutani 2LP set that was released without his consent). An unbelievably valuable document of the early Japanese underground. Hyper-rare and demented all the way. For lovers of Hadaka no Rallizes, Tomokawa Kazuki, acid folk, Jandek, and obscure and psyched-out sounds." -Showboat/Sky Station |

Artist: MASS CULTURE CONTROL BUREAU Title: Things From the Past Format: CD Label: Ad Hoc Country: USA Price: $19.00 |
| "This disk compiles the entire back catalog and previously unreleased recordings of the combined Dutch/English underground label, MCCB (1978-82), and marks the first time any of these works have been issued on compact disk. Great efforts were made to locate, restore & re-master the original tapes, and the entire process was personally overseen by MCCBs chief, the legendary musician/singer Geoff Leigh. Under the auspices of The Black Sheep, Kontakt Mikrophoon Orchestra and Red Balune, Geoff is joined by long-time affiliates Loek VanSaus, Collin McLure and Kathy Williams. This is pop music gone terribly right for a change, where imagery supersedes fashion, and sound knows no rules. Features cameo appearances by members of Henry Cow: Fred Frith, Tim Hodgkinson and Chris Cutler." -Ad Hoc |

Artist: MASTER QSH Title: S/T Format: Cass Label: Lal Lal Lal Country: Finland Price: $6.50 |
| "Side A was captured live outdoors in northern Finland, during the season of the midnight sun. Reminds you of an Ocora field recording from Xxxzazazastan. But that doesnt really mean anything. On the B-side, theres a mellow 9-piece percussion workout from the catacombs of Turku, Finland. Believe me, this is unbelievably satisfying free ethnic hippie music." - Lal Lal Lal. |

Artist: MATMOS Title: Rat Relocation Program Format: CD Label: Locust Country: USA Price: $14.50 |
| "A street rat was breaking into our apartment, eating our food and chewing holes in our clothes, skittering across our kitchen in the dark, scuttling inside our walls late at night. Since we already had a pet rat, the prospect of trying to kill one rat while feeding another struck us as intolerable hypocrisy, so we bought a non-lethal Have-a-Heart Trap. After several days of luring the invader closer and closer towards and then inside the trap with peanuts, we captured her. The first track is an unedited recording of the rat protesting its incarceration. The second track is our response, in which the timing and duration of the rat screams from the first track have been preserved. The following morning we took the rat to a wealthy suburban neighborhood and set it free." -- Drew Daniel. "The dynamic hybrid electro-rock duo Matmos strike again hot on the heels of last years celebrated Matador full length the Civil War with this zany, completely mesmerizing 2 track contribution to the Met Life series of field recordings and ingenious sound responses. The Matmos boys stretch an ominous canvas with the bare sounds of an incarcerated rat ensconced in a friendly trap and paint an unlikely response. Rat Relocation Program is a heavily elevated, gleeful electro-rock epic that combines Matmos patented blend of humor, drill & bass with cinematic prog reminiscent of the cult fantasy sci fi film The Fantastic Planet." - Locust |

Artist: MATTA LLAMA Title: s/t Format: LP Label: Mad Monk Country: USA Price: $16.50 |
| "Matta Llama are already one of the most talked about bands in New York City, but after the psych beardstrokers, dateless dronemongers, and stoner rock wastoids get ahold of this, the bands name will be express-delivered to legendary status alongside Trad Gras Och Stenar, Edgar Broughton Band, and High Rise. Featuring gifted artist Arik Moonhawk Roper on bass, this relentless foursome have crafted one of the most explicitly psychedelic and teeth-rattling albums to come along in years. Artist: MATTA LLAMA Title: The Witch Channel Format: LP Label: Black Dirt Country: USA Price: $18.00 |
| "Sometimes, throughout the process of creating a record, it is easy to forget how much magic is involved. When one is surrounded by wires, microphones, dials, tubes, screens, and stomp boxes there can be a decided lack of mystery. These are the earliest Black Dirt recordings, originally captured a mere few days after our humble doors were opened. As a matter of fact, everyone involved approached the experience as a sort of favor youll be our guinea pig and well do our damn best to get a good document out of it. Matta Llama dug in for a session and did what they do so well... wordlessly picking up their instruments and at certain points, each others and opening up that secret door that allows access to a timeless wellspring of past and future sounds. After the band had improvised more than an albums worth of music, something seemed off on playback. Another session was scheduled and a different approach was taken. Oddly, the results were the same. We placed the recordings on a shelf and high fived each other before they rode off on their way back to the big, dark city. And there the recordings sat. But a funny thing happened a few years later after we received our Alchemists robe in the mail. We went back to the them and realized that whatever was leaden about the sounds Matta Llama had laid down so many months before was purely a result of a young studio and novice engineer! - and once some of those problems were corrected, a blazing, golden, psychedelic beacon shot out of the speakers. The band was immediately contacted and at an impromptu meeting many things were discussed. Seeds grown to trees, lead to gold, and finally the idea of this record. Now, so many years later, this record glows with magic. It is hard to believe that there were any of the mundane trappings of a studio involved at all. It is a swirling, mysterious, and dark record and the document of the birth of Black Dirt and were proud to present The Witch Channel to you." - Black Dirt. Edition of 500. Recorded at Black Dirt Studio Westtown, NY. Mastered by Carl Saff Chicago, IL. 140g vinyl pressed at Brooklyn Phono Brooklyn. NY. Covers silk screened by VGKids Ypsilanti, MI. |

Artist: MAUS, JOHN Title: Love Is Real Format: CD Label: Upset The Rhythm Country: UK Price: $15.00 |
| "John Maus lives and works in Austin, Minnesota. Although first drawn to our attention as a core member of Ariel Pinks Haunted Graffiti and keyboard player with Animal Collectives Panda Bear, Maus has proved himself an extraordinary musician with a distinctive sound in his own right. Love Is Real is an album of contrast, of obscurity and familiarity, of darkness and light. Moments of intense disco anxiety warning against the sins of avarice (Too Much Money) find themselves rubbing shoulders with romantic virtuoso fugues (Green Bouzard). The juxtaposition of the buoyant 80s synth pop alongside Johns sombre, sometimes even morose lyrics is another good example of this tension. Without you girl, Im going over the edge, Maus sings over the four-to-the-floor dance rhythm of the albums prescient closer Times Is Weird. Over the fantastical keyboard gymnastics of The Whole Worlds Coming Apart, John finds relief in repeatedly confessing This is my nightmare, my nightmare. Its contrasts like these which point towards Johns preoccupation on this album with confused emotions and misunderstood intentions. Ariel Pink, Animal Collective, Panda Bear, Scott Walker, Echo & The Bunnymen, Goblin, Ultravox, Joy Division, The Cure, Bach."- Upset The Rhythm |

Artist: MAYPOLE Title: The Real Format: LP Label: Anopheles Country: USA Price: $22.00 |
| "Anopheles Records is proud to announce our latest archival release, the first ever authorized, high quality vinyl LP reissue of Baltimore, Marylands Maypole, whose sole album, The Real, was recorded in three days, July 1970, and released in early 1971, shortly before their label folded, dooming the album to stillborn status commercially at the time, and collector want list status today. The LP is an ambitious, 50-minute feast of tight harmonies, powerful arrangements, fluid improvisation, and flat out great songs, and serves as a touchstone for twin guitar-driven, West Coast-styled psychedelia, soaring power pop, and blistering hard rock - some even call it prog - everyone wants a piece of the Great One. If youve been looking for an LP to complete an imaginary trilogy with S.F. Sorrow and Parachute, then this is your tonic. The stature of Maypole has been muddied by the previous CD reissues, but this LP edition gets it right. Featuring state of the art remastering and pressing, a high quality full color tip on jacket featuring original artwork, and a full color insert loaded with lyrics, photos, and complete historical notes by Maypole founder, Dennis Tobell, this is the closest to classic psychedelia Anopheles Records has delved in to date, and were glad we didnt settle for something second rate - Maypole is The Real." - Anopheles. |

Artist: MAYYORS Title: Deads EP Format: 12" Label: Hurling Man Country: USA Price: $11.00 |
| "If youre a fan of listening to AmRep-style, throat-hammering noise rock while operating a lawnmower, Sacramentos Mayyors have been your favorite band for quite a while now. The stories that Ive heard about the general directive of this band (self-release ten singles and call it a day, suggest a coastal alliance and rarely leave the state of California) points towards a treatise on how to make people remember them. I hope the streak of conceptual purity holds out, and it looks as if it might, because this four-song 12" is better than their first two singles. Luxurious 45 RPM mastering at as little as four minutes per side makes this one of the loudest punk records since In Love with Jetts, guaranteeing that whatever rental properties its played in are going to lose significant fractions of their security deposits. Im not normally a fan of effects pedal abuse, but what Chris Woodhouse does with them on Clicks, the way he builds a simple, two-note progression into percussive blastloops that line up with the drums, and dial through them like the channel knob on a now-useless TV set, has turned me around. These guys busted DJ Ricks forehead open at a house show -- not on purpose, of course -- but when was the last time any of you felt so much for a band that you were willing to risk bodily harm to let them play? I think he took the hit for us all. Serious Hazelmyer/Gear Jammer worship put to a hefty rhythm section that fires the kick on the up and the down beats, possessing that rolled-up-in-a-rug-and-tossed-downhill sorta ambiance that really makes these sorta things come together. Prolonged exposure to these times has been difficult. Mayyors dont take the burn away, but they do blot out the rest of the world for refreshing, two-three-minute bursts -- in the parlance of the Cinco Toilet Shower, just enough time to get clean." - Doug Mosurok. |

Artist: MCBEE, HAMPER Title: The Good Old-Fashioned Way Format: LP Label: Drag City Country: USA Price: $16.00 |
| "The late Hamper McBee was a moonshiner, carnival barker, and ballad singer of legendary proportions. First discovered and recorded by folklorist and performer Guy Carawan in 1964, Hampers prodigious talent and personality won him admirers not only in his native Smoky Mountains but throughout the folk music world, where his wholly unique approach to old-time ballads and lyric songs struck like revelations. He drew from both the oral tradition and from records -- he especially loved Bradley Kincaid, Vernon Dalhart, and, surprisingly, Burl Ives -- to create a repertoire entirely his own, and that he sung in a warm, powerful voice seasoned by prodigious quantities of cigarettes, booze, and joie de vivre. Recorded by renowned country music scholar Charles K. Wolfe and filmmaker Sol Korine at Hampers home in Monteagle, Tennessee, in 1977, The Good Old-Fashioned Way compiles the best of McBees traditional ballads, affecting original compositions, and outlandish, side-splitting stories of life on the carnival circuit, at the moonshine still, in the back of Sheriff Bill Malones patrol car, and as Hamper McBee. Youve never met anyone like him before. Youll be glad you did." -Drag City |

Artist: MCCANN, SEAN Title: Chances Are Staying Format: LP Label: DNT Country: USA Price: $14.00 |
| "Debut vinyl release from Californian droniac SEAN McCANN. Recorded in the summer of 2009, this album was meant to be a continuation of the kaleidoscopic sound of his first albums, Phylum Sigh and Frame Of Mind. While still beaming with beauty and grace, this record demands a bit more from the listener than his other works. The first side of Chance Are Staying explores stringed melodic minimalism a la Tony Conrad, yet with much more poignant and somber motifs. The second side displays the ambit of his sound, from rapturous (and even... grooving?) violin and saxophone blurs to ecstatic mind-warps. This record stands as a pillar in the dawn of this young mans career. Full-color matte jackets with insert-in a hand-numbered edition of 400 mastered by PETE SWANSON." - DNT. |

Artist: MCCLURE, BRUCE Title: Vouchsafe Me More Soundpicture (Fain Make Glories) Format: LP Label: Olde English Spelling Bee Country: USA Price: $22.00 |
| "limited advance edition of an upcoming OESB release - only 120 copies - most of which are for sale at Bruces performances this month (april 2009) with Throbbing Gristle... all covers uniquely hand-painted.. excellent recording of a projector performance at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, MN - January 2009... all sounds generated by Bruces array of 16mm and 35mm film projectors and processed live... kind of an unintentional power electronics take on steve reich and terry rileys early tape experiments -- ranges from off-kilter mimimal techno vibe to full-on aube/merzbow pandemonium..." - OESB. |
|
Artist: MCCLURE, BRUCE Title: Vouchsafe Me More Soundpicture - Fain Make Glories Format: LP Label: Olde English Spelling Bee Country: USA Price: $19.00 |
| "Bruce McClure is well known on the international experimental film circuit for his unique projector performances that utilize film loops & modified 16mm projectors. But there is also an equally innovative sound element to his work and he has been embraced by the experimental music community as well. Bruce performed at the Chocolate Monk curated Colour Out of Space festival in 2008 and was chosen as an opening act for Throbbing Gristles reunion tour in the spring of 2009. During McClures performances the optical sound signals from each projector are fed through banks of guitar pedals, manipulated live, and played at extremely high volumes through the p.a. system. The different loops phase in and out of each other resulting in what could be described as a power electronics version of the early tape experiments of Steve Reich and Terry Riley, while sparser sections have an off-kilter minimal techno feel reminiscent of Plastikman and the early works of Thomas Brinkmann. This album features four excerpts from a professionally recorded performance in early 2009 at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, MN. Edition of 375 copies in heavy duty covers silkscreened by Monoroid." - Olde English Spelling Bee. |

Artist: MCGREGORS BROTHERHOOD OF BREATH, CHRIS Title: S/T Format: LP Label: Fledgling Country: UK Price: $35.00 |
| "Reissued by Fledgling in 2007, this is a classic title from 1971 by Chris McGregors magnificent big band -- Brotherhood Of Breath. Arguably one of the most influential albums to emerge from the London jazz scene of the early 1970s, the Brotherhood of Breath was an exuberant big-band created by South African-born pianist and composer, Chris McGregor. In South Africa, McGregor had formed the racially mixed Blue Notes in the early 1960s. By 1964, finding it very difficult to work at home, they left for Europe, finally settling in London in 1966. The Blue Notes -- Chris McGregor, Dudu Pukwana, Mongezi Feza, Johnny Dyani and Louis Moholo -- made a huge impact on Londons jazz scene and befriended many in Londons emerging avant-garde jazz community. The Brotherhood Of Breath was essentially the expatriate Blue Notes augmented by a large number of their friends from the British jazz community. The ensemble played an energetic mixture of Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus and Sun Ra, but retained a unique feel due to the South African influences and the intelligent arrangements. McGregor dreamed of keeping the band together "not as an institution, but as a community." Unfortunately, the economics of touring with such a large ensemble made that impossible. The group with a varying line-up continued to perform and record sporadically until McGregors untimely death in May 1990." - Fledgling. |

Artist: MCGUIRE, MARK Title: Tidings/Amethyst Waves Format: CD Label: Weird Forest Country: USA Price: $13.00 |
| "Trying to put the last 15 years of music into context, youd be hard pressed to get anyone to agree on a single thing. If anything, this period has been a collective convergence of all things cool-sounding: naive experimentalism, academic composition, art-rock synthesis, electronic nihilism/flagellation, and, well, everything else. MARK MCGUIRE could muddy anyones interpretation of the contemporary canon with his buddies in the triadic mega-unit, EMERALDS, his collaborative outings in SUN WATCHER and SKYRAMPS (with Daniel "Oneohtrix Point Never" Lopatin), and his prolific, yet well-executed, solo work. "Have you heard his shredability, incomprehensible astral traveling and meditative neutron stasis on any of those solo jams, the dude must be ancient!?" Truth is, Mark Mcguire is a youngin, not a refuge of the 70s. Nor is he mining unfamiliar territory; he produces something old and familiar, yet it sounds so fresh and necessary for today. Originally released as limited edition cassettes and masterfully cleaned up for this definitive release by JAMES PLOTKIN, Tidings/Amethyst Waves finds McGuire packing 60-plus minutes with trance-inducing, melodic guitar intricacies, an occasional wall-of-squall reminiscent of Mizutani riding a thunder horse, and filaments of a drifting stratosphere where organic synthed-out solos are nestled in tight. With this release, Mark McGuire has hatched a true American Euro-vision utilizing major shifts in the music as language paradigm. No joke, this is where Wyld Stallyns is heading in the year 2398 A.G. and Tidings/Amethyst Waves is as essential as anything in the Emeralds catalog. Edition of 1,000." -Weird Forest |

Artist: MCLEAN, BARTON & PRISCILLA Title: Electronic Landscapes Format: CD Label: EM Country: Japan Price: $24.00 |
| Originally issued in 1979, first time on CD w/ bonus tracks. "Although Barton and his wife Priscilla McLean have had a long and distinguished history of LP and compact disc albums throughout their professional composer/performer career, this album is unique in that it is the first one to present, on one CD, such a broad and comprehensive picture of their purely electronic music, spanning 1975 through 2001. Interestingly, although their materials and equipment have changed, their ideas of musical composition are still basically the same, creating a unity throughout the CD." From the liner notes: "When Bart introduced me to the new studio with the Synthi-100, I stared unbelievingly: here was a huge synthesizer, along a whole wall, with hundreds of push-pins (a matrix setup for connecting sounds, rather than the old patch cords), and twenty-two oscillators! The Synthi-256 Digital Sequencer was a full-sized keyboard, standing alone diagonally to the analog synthesizer, but connected internally. In that studio with the giant machines, one raced from one end of the room to another to play and record the sounds, never sitting down, and in removing unwanted noise or editing out a recorded section, the composer had to take a metal splicing block and sharp razor blade, and pressing down very hard, cut through the 1-inch wide acetate tape in two places, remove the unwanted time segment, and rejoin the two remaining ends with special splicing tape! So we three - Bruce, Bart, and I worked all our spare time, alternating with each other, in the I.U.S.B. Studio. I spent whole days there, sometimes 22 hours long, working and working to get just the right sound-combinations and record them." - Priscilla Mclean. |

Artist: MCPHEE, JOE Title: Alto Format: LP Label: Roaratorio Country: USA Price: $14.00 |
| "Alto joins Tenor and Soprano to complete a discrete trilogy within Joe McPhees catalog of unaccompanied waxings. Recorded live at a Lower East Side bar in 2009, McPhees explorations on alto saxophone and clarinet are alternately fiery and contemplative, imbued with the masterful intelligence thats marked his work for over forty years. A limited edition of 525 copies on 180 gram vinyl, with a Judith Lindbloom silkscreen print on rice paper and liner notes by Hank Shteamer. Digital download coupon included." - Roaratorio. |
|
Artist: MCPHEE, JOE Title: Soprano Format: LP Label: Roaratorio Country: USA Price: $16.50 |
| "A document of Joe McPhees first solo concert devoted exclusively to the straight horn, Soprano is both a companion volume to his previous LP for Roaratorio (the critically lauded Everything Happens For A Reason) and a follow-up to his classic album Tenor, which raised the bar for solo saxophone music over 30 years ago. Recorded live in St. Georges Church at the Guelph Jazz Festival in 1998, Soprano was inspired by Pauline Oliveros Deep Listening performance at the venue the previous year. The acoustics of the church provided a natural web of reverberation and delay, and compose as much a part of the sonic palette as Michael Overhages farmhouse did for Tenor. McPhees art is informed by the head and the heart in equal measures, and Soprano is thoughtful, passionate music from one of jazzs most eloquent practitioners. A limited edition of 500 copies on 180 gram vinyl, with a Judith Lindbloom silkscreen print on rice paper and liner notes by McPhee and Oliveros." - Roaratorio. |

Artist: MCPHERSON, DONALD & TETUZI AKIYAMA Title: Vinegar & Rum Format: CD Label: Bo Weavil Country: UK Price: $17.50 |
| "Recorded in New Zealand in 2004, is the duo recording of New Zealand guitarist Donald McPherson and Japanese guitarist Tetuzi Akiyama. A beautiful meeting of 2 virtuoso acoustic guitarists, both thoroughly schooled in the vast world of improvising. Donald McPherson, a native New Zealander has been playing the guitar since the tender age of 12, he studied at the Otago Art School in the 80s and in the 90s he released a number of extremely limited lathe-cut folk records. Tetuzi Akiyama is often associated with the improvising community in Tokyo generated around Tokyos Off Site venue. But to Tetuzis sound owes just as much to the country blues guitarists of the 30s. His sound has taken the blues form into a new world of minimalist improvisations. His loose playing side steps the usual clichés of the guitar in both the free improv and traditional folk scenes. Tetuzi has a varied number of very different projects from free improvisations, working with musicians across the globe, to hard minimalist electric blues boogies, a startling example can be found on Idea Records Dont Forget To Boogie LP and Headz live CD version. This record finds Tetuzi and Donald playing melodic folk improvisations that grow and morph into compositions that on each listening uncover some new layer of beauty. Both playing on acoustic guitar, they have a level of communication and understanding of each others playing, that allows a musical connection to grow and blossom into a full-length recording of delicate melodic mayhem. And the CD is limited to 1000, there are two extra tracks on the CD that do not appear on the vinyl version." First CD on BoWeavil; LP version is coming out later..." - Bo Weavil. |

Artist: MECKI MARK MEN Title: Running In The Night Format: CD Label: Mellotronen Country: Sweden Price: $23.00 |
| "Mindbending heavy acid space rock from Sweden 1969! Mecki Mark Men was (together with Hansson and Karlsson) Jimi Hendrix favourite Swedish band. When Jimi came back from his Swedish tours he probably told tales about the wild Swedish organ tormentor Mecki Bodemark who did the same things with his grinding Organ as Jimi did with his guitar. They sound like a mix of Teargas, High Tide and Jimi Hendrix but with a wild organ player in glittering space costume. The mighty guitar wizard Kenny Hakansson has never been more psychedelic than this!!! "While I was searching for the master tape to Mecki Mark Mens 2nd album titled "Running in the Summer Night" I discovered the original master which was originally meant to be released as the Swedish version of the album. Mecki Mark Men was contracted by Philips in Sweden but it was Limelight records in the USA who released the album in 1969. I compared the Limelight tapes and the newly discovered Philips tapes. Basically it was the same album but sound wise it was two totally different ones. Musically it is still brain melting Heavy Acid Space Rock driven by the fury of demons, but now with a fantastic pure and dynamic sound! The CD includes the album plus bonus material from the US version as well as short conversations from the studio. Detailed biography by Reine Fiske and Tommy Dahln!!!" - Mellotronen |

Artist: MEDIO MUTANTE Title: Inestable EP Format: 12" Label: Cititrax Country: USA Price: $18.00 |
| "Cititrax is proud to present Medio Mutantes debut 12 inch EP. The six tracks on this record are the product of a serendipitous meeting of minds and the feverish week of recording sessions that followed. Mariana Saldana, Jose Cota and Seth Nemec met in 2007 in Austin Texas and began recording the same night, writing the title track Inestable as soon as the synths had been plugged in. Drawing on a shared love of synthesizers and drum machines, each had worked as a solo electronic artist before uniting, the three immediately found a shared vision. Having grown up listening to Hip-hop, Jazz, Latin freestyle and New Wave records from Europe, America and Japan, Medio Mutante wrings a mutated blend of raw and propulsive energy from their limited analogue gear. The bands name, literally Average Mutant in Spanish, is also an indication of their subtle perversion of familiar themes in their songs. Love, science fiction, and disenfranchisement in a future gone bland are turned on their ear in 6 danceable electro songs sung in Spanish and English. Medio Mutante are an American band, born of working class values, with their feet planted in the past but looking to the future. Limited edition of 600 copies." -Cititrax. Due to the oversize packaging, this set will have to be shipped on its own. Highly recommended! |
|
Artist: MEEHAN, SEAN AND ELLEN FULLMAN Title: s/t Format: CD Label: Cut Country: US Price: $13.00 |
| "Longtime friends who had hoped to play together for some time, Fullman and Meehan were surprised by the initial efforts of their collaboration. Their instruments -- or rather the sounds of their instruments meeting in the acoustic space -- strongly influenced one another: combination tones, sympathetic resonances, beating, and even cancellation of each others sound. Mapping routes through this unusual territory would become the piece presented here in three parts. The recording was made Easter (R.C.) weekend 2006. It is an acoustic work, recorded in stereo, without overdubbing or effects. Ellen Fullmans long string instrument is a unique instrument of her own invention. Waist high, parallel wires, strung in two sets span 14 meters. Fullman produces rich, microtonal drones by pacing up and down the wires and applying friction with her fingertips. Each of her ten fingers precisely finds the appropriate string and the sound emanates from wooden box resonators bolted into the wall. At her studio where this CD was recorded, the strings run through the patio door and terminate in the backyard: "the extra length affords me an additional lower octave," Fullman explains. For the last ten years or so, Sean Meehan has been focusing on playing the snare drum with cymbals. On this recording he produces long, continuous tones from them using a dowel and friction." - Cut. |

Artist: MEELKOP, ROEL Title: (onkyo ok) Format: CD Label: CMR Country: New Zealand Price: $12.50 |
| "Launching CMRs new line of hand-numbered 78rpm dust jacket CD packaging is Dutch sound artist Roel Meelkop. Roel was a founding member of audio art group THU20 in the early eighties who continue to perform and record, is currently a member of electro-acoustic live project Kapotte Muziek, and the electronic rhythm group GOEM (both along with Frans De Waard and Peter Duimelinks). Roel has a long history of visual art, sound installation, curation and organization of various live music events in Rotterdam, his city of residence, and abroad. His well-received solo work has been released on numerous labels including trente oiseaux (Ger), V2_Archief (Neth), line (US), Intransitive Recordings (US), Korm Plastics (Neth) and most recently Tariff Records (US) and Klingfilm (Bel). onkyo ok is composed of recordings made during Roels tour to Japan in summer 2001 (along with Frans De Waard and Peter Duimelinks). Where Kiyoshi Mizutanis Yokosawa-iri CD (cmr1) uses primarily rural sound sources from a selected area, onkyo ok may strike a special chord and familiarity with anyone who has visited Japans urban areas, cities and outlying regions. Various components of the rich Japanese soundscape (to name a few: pachinko parlours, train crossings, crows, electrical machines, people) have been captured, abstracted (or not), blended and re-composed creating unique sonic snapshots of this beautiful and at times bewildering country. The sound pieces are relatively constant over time (Roels characteristic silences are at a minimum) containing numerous complimentary sources simultaneously building together into broadband structures, then falling away to focus on various seperate objects and events. This album serves as a beautiful document and expression of the ever-changing Japanese acoustic environment as it was at the beginning of the twenty first century." - CMR. |

Artist: MEERCAZ Title: S/T Format: LP Label: Tic Tac Totally Country: USA Price: $18.00 |
| "("OLD SCHOOL" TIP-ON JACKET w/ INSERT) Debut LP from Muslim Delgados (Leaders) Meercaz. This is Muzzs post-Leaders solo effort with assistance from Sarah Epstein (Hunches), Kyle Raquipiso (Meth Teeth), Clay Silva, and many other contributors. "The approach is primitive but spacey, simultaneously "retro" and "futuristic" without batting an eye. Its aggressive guitar music thats "punk" in its DIY manic quality, but with an aesthetic thats much closer to the late 60s and early 70s. To my ears, Meercaz is one of the handful of things in recent years that matches what I think modern rock music SHOULD sound like (and rarely does)." -Eddie Flowers. Mastered for vinyl at the great Chicago Mastering Service, with a nice old school "tip-on" jacket, and insert w/ liner notes by Eddie Flowers." -Tic Tac Totally. |

Artist: MEF TEEF / OWL XOUNDS EXPLODING GALAXY Title: Split Format: Cass Label: Arbor Country: USA Price: $6.50 |
| "Pure energy and total expression are the only boundaries around the free-jazz/music movement. Primitivism and psychedelic confusion act as the main themes. Mef Teef of Iowa City, a relatively new collective, have one past release on Raccoo-oo-oons Night People Label (of which MT percussionist Andy Spore is a member). Spastic drumming acts as the basis for which brass, piano, and silence interweave. Culled from a hometown live session, "Dark Star Voyage Pt. 1" features unique instrumental interplay causing the piece to progress almost theatrically with definitive mood changes. Brooklyns Owl Xounds Exploding Galaxy is a heavy hitter in the free jazz underground. Comparisons to avant-garde greats are not unjustified. With a recent LP out on Wooden Wands Mad Monk label and a plethora of sold out self released jams, this is the collectives first tape. Focused on the youthful energy of punk music and centered around the drumming of Adam Kriney (La Otracina, Castanets), in "Transmission To The Pineapple Universe", Owl Xounds produce pure blown out oblivion never faltering in its onward progression. Recorded live at the Cakeshop featuring Gene Janas on upright bass, Darius Jones on alto sax, and Greg Vegas on electric guitar the jam is a total freak-out, seething equally with nods to Sonny Simmons as it is to Sonic Youth. In a numbered edition of 100 tapes with printed labels, art and an insert by Andy Spore." - Arbor |
|
Artist: MEIFERT, ARNULF Title: Unrein Bis Zum Abend/Reise Ins Diesseits Format: LP Label: Die Taubnessel Country: Germany Price: $28.00 |
| "A record of extreme poetry and sound. Arnulf Meifert was the first drummer in the legendary German group Faust (he is only present on Faust, the first LP issued by Polydor). Later, and for many years, he was a companion of Vienna actionist Guenter Brus, whose 50th birthday was celebrated with the publication of the Panishes Liederbuch LP (the now mythical first LP issued by Die Taubnessel back in 1988). For the recordings of this new project, Meifert met Kommissar Hjuler and his wife Mama Baer, also experimental musicians, but nearly two generations younger. They have been working together for just a few hours, so everything had to be totally improvised. Nevertheless, Meifert brought some texts with him, fascinated by confrontations of word and music. These texts range from the Old Testament to Renaissance artistry and Christian hate-speech from the 20th century, ending with a modern guide for the voyage from death to rebirth. The impressive and singular cover artwork was done by Klaus Holzmann, an upcoming Austrian artist. Two letters showing the discussion between Meifert and Hjuler after the meeting are also included. Edition limited to 280 copies." -Die Taubnessel |

|
Artist: MELEE Title: Bare Those Excellent Teeth pt. 2 Format: LP Label: Brokenresearch Country: USA Price: $18.00 |
| "The second in the series of compositions from the Graveboys dis-rhythm section of Hell and Bunny this time with Nate Wooley doing the duty on trumpet while Olson maintains his Wolf-obligations. Perhaps darker and more trance-inducing than the first "Bare" it sounds very much like chamber music played by stamping machines which aint exactly a bad thing." - Brokenresearch. Edition of 200. |

Artist: MELEE Title: Violent Forms Of Laughter Format: Cass Label: Meu Dia De Morte Country: Germany Price: $12.00 |

Artist: MELTAOT Title: First and Second Rites Format: Cass Label: The Tapeworm Country: UK Price: $8.00 |
| "Cassette-only release in a limited-edition of 250 copies. Meltaot are a bass-heavy, improvised noise duo made up of UK artist/musician/broadcaster Sharon Gal and artist/writer/musician SavX (aka Savage Pencil aka Edwin Pouncey). After recording together at a session for Pestrepeller (the other band they are a part of), they decided to take the project one step further and record as a separate entity. Although black metal, drone and doom would seem to be at the core of what Meltaot are involved with here, the real intention was to paint a series of atmospheric sound pictures (not all of them dark) using voice, bass guitar and other instrumentation/effects as their materials. This is the first release by Meltaot. There will be others. SavX (electric "rooster" guitar); Sharon Gal (electric bass guitar, voice, percussion, feedback). Recorded at the SavLab, 6/17/2009. Illustration by SavX." -The Tapeworm |

Artist: MELTON, CARLTON Title: Pass It On Format: LP Label: Mid To Late Country: USA Price: $16.00 |
| "Another slice of supreme San Franciscan psych-melto to be filed alongside Wooden Shjips et al, and UKs own Heads, maybe Earthless or White Hills, but this stands real tall indeed. Taking the cues of Hawkwind and Pink Floyd (theres a heavy hitting cover of "When Youre In") to create some great heavy droning fogged up glass onion sike...know what were saying? Recorded in a genuine geodesic dome by ex-members of ZEN GUERILLA, and nothing short of highly recommended. Packaged with artwork by ALAN FORBES." -Mid To Late |

Artist: MENCHE, DANIEL Title: Scather Format: 3" CDR Label: Taalem Country: France Price: $7.00 |

Daniel Menche has fastly gained a strong reputation in the experimental/noise scene thanks to many releases on various labels all around the world (Tesco, Soleilmoon, Beta Lactam Ring, Antifrost, to name but a few) and extremely physical live performances. Heres another fine example of his huge talent to create loud and powerful but subtle music !" - Taalem. |

Artist: MENEGUAR Title: The In Hour Format: LP Label: Woodsist Country: USA Price: $13.00 |
| "Switching instruments and experimenting with recording techniques, Meneguar has cooked up a totally unique(and surprising) record. The In Hour channels the spontaneity and aesthetics of Swell Maps, the pop hooks of the Zombies, and lyrical collage of Guided By Voices. Everything was home recorded at their little Xanadu in Brooklyn, Rear House, home base to Jeremy Earls Woodsist label (Blues Control, Sic Alps, Wooden Wand, Jana Hunter) and the changing roster of Meneguars alter egos (Woods, Shepherds). Only six months since their last record, The In Hour represents a serious departure that still holds true to the bands undeniable pop sensibility." -Woodsist |

Artist: MENSTRUATION SISTERS Title: MA Format: LP Label: No Fun Country: USA Price: $16.00 |
| "Reissue of their legendary first LP, released originally in an edition of 100 in Australia only. Best band ever?" - No Fun. Limited to 500 copies. |
|
Artist: MENSTRUATION SISTERS Title: Samantha (My Wack Panther) Format: LP Label: Ecstatic Peace Country: USA Price: $14.00 |
| "Unlike anything book or animal, the Menstruation Sisters destroy wholly" -- Thurston Moore, Sonic Youth. "Menstruation Sisters hail from Sydney, Australia. Basically a duo comprised of wildboy poet ululationist and guitar strangler Nick Kamiussis (aka Rizili aka Riz) and OZ wonderkid Oren Ambarchi (Sunn 0))), Burial Chamber, Grave Temple, John Zorn etc etc), and sometimes aided by Brendan Walls and others. Their first LP, Ma, was in an edition of 100 copies, all of which had razor blades, balloons and hypodermic needles applied to one side. As an objet dart it became a highly desirable item for noise believers (and was recently reissued -- sans appliques -- by No Fun Productions). Every once in a while an LP drops out of nowhere only to further confuse whomever is fortunate enough to grip it. 2005 saw the Holy Africa 7" on White Denim, in 2001 the infamous Goog LP on Saucerlike, in 1999 the Dead At Slugs LP on Menlo Park and in 1998 the Triple Bogey On A Ma Par Hole 3x7". All of these are essential documents of one of the most bizarre, genuinely inspired free time outfits working the avant-mind body love/noise worship axis today. This newest LP has been patiently waiting to be released for the last few years, initially a multi-label project instigated by Menlo Park and now fully realized by Ecstatic Peace. Long a champion of Menstruation Sisters after witnessing an out-of-nowhere set at NYCs legendary lost underground experimental oasis The Cooler in the late 90s, Thurston Moore invited the Sisters to open for Sonic Youth in Sydney shortly thereafter and, as inspired and weird as the NYC set was, the Sonic Youth gig was perhaps one of the most astounding question marks of music the seasoned Moore had ever experienced. So we present you Samantha (My Wack Panther) -- a new and beautiful peek into the edge of musical menstruation." -Ecstatic Peace |

Artist: MENSTRUATION SISTERS Title: Should Sisters Suck? Format: LP Label: Ultra Eczema Country: Belgium Price: $31.00 |
| "A rabbi who yells at a higher pitch and more psycho than NIK RIZILI, and a guitarist other than OREN AMBARCHI who can make strings yell in Yiddish yelling-about as rare as, according to Ultra Eczema, "ladies [who] have their period nonstop, since five years [and] are 456 km away from the hospital while the head of a baby is forcing its way out of a mangina." So much stress, guitar strings so loose you can put your legs and arms between them, a hyperactive and creepy and slow carnival of absolute madness. Reminiscent to the more sparse parts of Harry Pussy, the screaming of Hanatarashi. 300 copies, with an insert, a small poster, a sticker, an etching on the B-side, and found footage cover art by DENIS TYFUS." - Ultra Eczema. |
|
Artist: MENTAL MIDGET Title: Somewhere In Lovely Nowhere Format: Double LP Label: Orpheus Country: Denmark Price: $33.00 |
| "Copenhagen 1983 saw one of the most obscure and strange bands in Danish rock, real out there music from a bunch of dope crazed young musicians. Its all there, basement sound, drug induced intensity, long jams, demented songs like Paranoid Wreck", Shadows In The Dark or Lucifer On The Wall. Evolving out of the first wave of Danish punks, featuring ex-members of a.o. SODS!!, BUT inspired by DOORS, LOVE, HENDRIX. If YAHOWA 13 would have started out from the late 70s/early 80s punk environment, they would have sounding like this. PSYCHEDELIC AND STONED!" - Orpheus. |
|
Artist: MERRY, HARRY Title: First Contact Format: LP/7" Label: Ole Country: Netherlands Price: $27.00 |
| "On First Contact we find the most excentric corners of the first 7 years of Harry, the years that he invented himself. This is Punk. Synth Punk, Village Fair n Roll, Barrel Organ Opera, Avant Quiz n Roll. Harry re-invented the heart of rock n roll." - Ole. These are from the first 200 copies, which include a bonus 7". |
|
Artist: MERRY, HARRY Title: Village Life In 1905 Format: 7" Label: Ole Country: Netherlands Price: $7.00 |
| "Harrys keyboard has been producing Bach, Beatles and some clever barrel organ sounds ever since Harry got his organ back from the factory. Where he had send it with the task to rearrange it so it could produce the sounds and structures he needed. Harry Merrys hilarious apearance and total baroque musical style is often misunderstood in the popscene, mainly seen as a funny gimmick. He first got recognised in the Rotterdam artscene as a representant of typical dutch avantgarde music. Like Willem Breuker uses march music, Harry uses the street organ sound and sings with a strong dutch accent and puts these typical elements in a new perspective. Harry is a talented composer being ironic and absurd, singing in his own unique way about the Panorama paper, moody busdrivers and Hoydenish Ambrosial. For more talk about this 7" www.monochrom.at or visit the tocado website for more Harry Merry." - Ole. |

Artist: MERZBOW Title: Live Destruction at No Fun 2007 Format: CD Label: No Fun Country: USA Price: $11.00 |
| "At this years No Fun Fest, the legendary Japanese noise king Merzbow gave a blistering performance that stunningly brought together both his classic analog and recently-explored digital concerns. Keeping pace between two laptops and an amplified sheet-metal instrument, the walls of computerized droning distortion and psyched-out metallic scarping easily reminded those attending to the world of noise that even icons with twenty-plus year careers under their belts can still vivaciously channel the advancements they helped build as well as compose stunning untried sounds. Along with the recent Pain Jerk/Incapacitants split CD and the upcoming Aaron Dilloway/Carlos Giffoni split LP, Live Destruction at No Fun 2007 manifests itself as an essential audio document of one of many striking performances at this years festival. Often considered a genre best experienced live, the gargantuan walls of outer-region sonics set forth by noise were aptly spawned in-the-moment and afresh by their performers, and the variety, sheer power, and unrelenting confidence of Merzbows set in particular no doubt left longtime followers thoroughly fulfilled while those whove only heard the name thrown around in mythical regard were bound to have been left with a hearty appreciation of his genius. " - No Fun. |

Artist: MESS FOLK Title: Something I Remember Format: 7" Label: Horizontal Action Country: USA Price: $6.00 |
| "Nova Scotias underground punk output has been sorely ignored by most of the world, and with the debut 7-inch EP by Sydneys brilliantly belligerent MESS FOLK, hopefully a little more light will be shed on this systematically-neglected barren frontier. With an immediate slop/savant aesthetic that conjures a drooling, drugged-out, and agitated ball of putrescence, Mess Folk keep their blurry message straight to the point and deliver three devastating punk cuts simmering in anxiety, depression, and the delusional inner turmoil that sets in after months of cabin fever. The deranged, discombobulated vocals go so perfectly with the frantic razored guitar slashings and choppy songwriting that eeks out resemblances of discarded Electric Eels and Urinals ruination/infatuation, radiating with a sticky familiarity you just cant quite put your finger on. Anyway you cut it, Mess Folk have arrived and its gonna take a hell of a lot of zit cream and/or stain remover to eradicate their slimy presence from the ugly face of modern punk." - Horizontal Action. |
|
Artist: MESSAGES Title: After Before Format: LP Label: Destijl Country: USA Price: $16.00 |
| "The baby believes the womb is the Universe. At birth there is a glimmer of light and a shifting of space. I was there, but now i am Here. Then there are still but 2 things : Me and the Universe. And then what happens is Other People. From a note sounded in 1960 and held for a long time, a continuum of Sound has been sluiced along a diagonal of personal ecstasy, and some have come to call it a Drone. Surrounding the Drone is a genre, and within, wheat and chaff often comingle all too comfortably. But with tones as thick and texturally luxuriant with spiritual resonance as their long, glorious hair, Messages are the two worthy gurus currently contributing to the echo. Messages evoke the womb. And when the womb smiles, it whispers Messages, and then there is the first glimmer of Light.." - Meassges. ""TAKETO SHIMADA moved to New York in late 80s and has been making music with TRES WARREN of PSYCHIC ILLS as MESSAGES since 2006, exploring a hybrid of raga, techno and drone rock. Odds are someone walking down Canal Street in NYC will hear the sound of Messages coming from a fifth floor walkup: mashing sine waves, bass loops, guitars, samplers and turntables into a storm of slowly shifting repetitions, heavy monotone low-end and smoky echoes that conjure unexpected subsonic grooves. Dusted called their Social Registry seven-inch "some heavy, humid drone, pregnant with 4am electricity and, in the end, thick fuzzy beats. A beautiful surprise, engaging even in its abstract tendencies." - Destijl. Taketo Shimada on bass and tambura, Tres Warren (Psychic Ills) on shruti box, guitar and ukelin and Spencer Herbst (Matta Llama) on percussion. Highly recommended! |
|
Artist: MESSAGES Title: Destination Format: 7" Label: Social Registry Country: USA Price: $6.50 |
| "This is the third release in The Social Registrys ongoing series aptly titled The Social Club. Dispatched monthly via letter-pressed/limited edition 7-inch vinyl and digital distribution, this series presents a full musical array: the established and the obscured, the noisy and the delicate, the tempered and the experimental. The press release for The Social Club makes reference to these editions being akin to postcards, and this one is a postcard in the truest sense. It captures a moment and represents a place of sorts. If you walk down Canal Street on any given night, odds are you will hear the sound of Messages coming from a fifth floor walkup. If you stopped, you would hear it go on for hours and it would be the sound of Tres Warren (of Psychic Ills) and Taketo Shimada mashing sine waves, bass loops, guitars, samplers and turntables into a storm in between bouts of playing techno and psychedelic improv records. The resulting sound consists of slowly shifting repetitions, heavy monotone low end and smoky echoes that conjure unexpected subsonic grooves. This 7-inch collects two of these tracks and marks the duos debut release." -Social Registry. 2007 release (prior to the LP on Destijl). Numbered edition of 750 copies. |

Artist: MESSENGER GIRLS TRIO Title: Excelsior Salon Trio Format: LP Label: Uzu Audio Country: USA Price: $20.00 |
| "Messenger Girls Trio, the Excelsior Salon Trio... comprised of Sir Richard Bishop (by appointment to her majesty-what the old broad did to deserve that, well never know) and David Knott (improvisationally board certified music therapist), in congress with Robert Millis and Jeffery Taylor (often known for their recreational duties in both Climax Golden Twins and AFCGT). The quartet last released a trio album in 2002 for the Anomalous Record label. Or perhaps the trio released a quartet album. After that Richard Bishop toured. Dave Knott put peoples minds back together or took them apart--it just depends on your point of view. Climax Golden Twins devoured 78rpm records and other Victrola Favorites. Meanwhile the quartet trio tape kept rolling-cassette players, digital devices, dictaphones, micro cassette, wire recorders, phonautographs, notes on paper. Edited from hours of material recorded between 2002 and 2008. Mostly improvised in living rooms and on front porches. Mostly in Seattle: on Goat Hill, at the Shabby Greenwood Grotto Studio and at the Sun City Girls cavernous Blue West headquarters, may it rest in pieces. Mostly with acoustic guitars and percussion. Occasional insects were wrangled into the proceedings. Layered. Sliced. Stretched. Messed, tweaked, poked, prodded, beaten and slipped luxuriously onto a vinyl platter for your listing enjoyment and listening pleasure by the epicureans at Uzu Audio. 545 copies of 180 gram vinyl, packaged in a custom made gatefold jacket, silkscreened, stamped, numbered." -Uzu |

| "The METABOLISMUS collective has been making music since the mid-1980s, self- releasing most of their early material on cassette and vinyl LPs. The band comes from the town of Stuttgart, Germany and creates music that is rooted in the rich tradition of German experimental bands such as Can, Amon Duul, Popul Voh and Kraftwerk with touchstones in rock, folk and electronic music. With this release they are joined by SAMARA LUBELSKI and provide two beautiful tracks of arboreal shimmer with glimpses of soft 60s psychedelic sheen." -Social Registry |

Artist: METABOLISMUS Title: Spriebwartsdrall Format: LP Label: Amish Country: USA Price: $11.00 |
| "This full length is firmly rooted in the rich German experimental music tradition of such bands as Can, Amon Duul and Popol Vuh. The album begins with subtle tones that shift and eventually build into a Silver Apples psychedelic groove. Things move back and forth through layers of analog synthesizer orchestration, electronics and droning violin, eventually accentuated by ambient recordings of wind chimes, cow bells, birds, crickets, barking dogs and the sounds of Stuttgart. An absolutely stunning record, which Bananafish claims, has "24-7 potential." Vivid full color artwork by German animation artist Petra Kolitsch. Edition of 600." - Amish |

| "Three members of Stuttgart experimental rock band Metabolismus moved over to Berlin to meet Kim Fowley and tell the world that rock and roll was here to stay. This record is dedicated to all the lost souls stranded in their empty rooms through out this universe." - Psycho Terror Entertainment |

Artist: METALUX Title: Waiting for Armadillo Format: LP Label: Load Country: USA Price: $12.00 |
| "Clipped and chopped radio beamings from a Middle American bunker, Metalux bring a rodeo of galactic proportions home to your speakers. M.V. Cärbon and J. Graf play a dual synth/tape soundtrack to an uneasy nation. The vibe is dark and alien and the recording on this record is top-notch. Crazy voices and spectacle mounting live action! Ballpark reference points include Chrome and the Residents in the same thought as Chicago form shapers from the early 90s Milk of Burgundy scene like Duotron, Scissor Girls et al." - Load. Artist: METALUX & JOHN WIESE Title: Exoteric Format: CD Label: Load Country: USA Price: $13.50 |
| "A cold and chopped journey awaits you in this collaboration between electronic duo Metalux and sound levitator, John Wiese. Vocals are chopped and oscillation wave forms move themselves into long sheets of ribbon thin taffy with confusing intent. The middle ground in this collaboration has a coldwave appeal that clicks with fans of throbbing rhythmic noise like Wolf Eyes and Forcefield. This record is not noise however, more a full blown Kevorkian cocktail of reverberated malaise. The seven unnamed tracks flow one into the next with a rebounded tape smack that does not forget foot bounce, while keeping the main dome fully occupied with variable speed vox fukkk and equipment groan. This one is for the heads and takes notions of either artist to places where neither artist is safe going. This is for late nights and early mornings." - Load. |

Artist: METZGER, PAUL Title: Anamnestic Tincture Format: LP Label: Roaratorio Country: USA Price: $16.00 |
| "Anamnestic Tincture is a live album by virtuosic musical carpenter Paul Metzger, culled from many hours of concert recordings. Side one comprises Metzgers public debut on his modified banjo, recorded in 2002 at a former church-turned-underground art space in Minneapolis. One of his most memorable compositions, "After Milo" later turned up as an untitled improvisation on his CD for the Chairkickers label. Jumping ahead six years (and several more banjo alterations later) to side two, the glittering "Orans" gets a workout at a memorial show for the artist Matt Zaun. As an acknowledgment of the occasion, Metzger also gave a one-time-only performance -- "Dark Green Water" -- on another of his mutant instruments: an acoustic guitar with the body drilled out to accommodate a cymbal set into its face, and ten assorted strings of varying lengths laid over the top, giving it a particularly metallic and dissonant sound. Anamnestic Tincture is released in an edition of 425 copies, with an original vintage snapshot mounted on each cover." -Roaratorio |

Artist: METZGER, PAUL Title: Deliverance Format: CD Label: Locust Country: USA Price: $14.50 |
| "Minnesotas Paul Metzger is an unsung hero of the unaccompanied string instrument and a master musician of an instrument of his own invention. On Deliverance -- a real time performance on his overhauled 21 string banjo -- youll be treated to some of the most deeply satisfying & impulsive outer cosmos ragadelia youre ever likely to hear. Clocking in at nearly 60 colossal minutes, Deliverance is 3 tracks of unfiltered aural transcendence; a hypnotic raga epic thats by turns a slow burning meditation & an urgent mind / body duel. Pauls playing may summon up the spirits of Sandy Bulls searching inventiveness, Billy Faiers out Tacoma sides, J.P. Pickens tweaked Americana, Henry Flynts searing harmonic drones or Big Jim Sullivans psychedelic exotica, but at the end of the day, Metzger is no idolater and were all a little luckier to have him around to occupy his own singular post in this post-Fahey world." - Locust. |

Artist: MEV Title: Pieces Format: CD Label: IRML Country: USA Price: $11.00 |
| "Third archival MEV release on Allan Bryants label. The first track, Quadrupl Play, is a piece for rubberbands recorded in 1966 by Allen Bryant. It can be described as variations on melody and was played at the first MEV concerts in St. Paul du Vence, France and at Teatro Argentina in Rome. The second track, Pich Out (or Rocket Take Off), for 4 guitars, is loud and thundering, played by 4 musicians through 4 speakers at Sala Beloch, Rome in March 1967. Features Rzewski, Phetteplace, Curran, Bryant." |
|
Artist: MEV/AMM Title: Apogee Format: Double CD Label: Matchless Country: UK Price: $36.00 |
| The first CD features a joint recording of the six musicians of Musica Eletttronica Viva and AMM together: Alvin Curran, Eddie Prévost, Keith Rowe, Frederic Rzewski, Richard Teitelbaum and John Tilbury. It was recorded April 30th 2004. The 2nd CD contains separate performances that MEV and AMM gave at the Freedom of the City festival, London on May 1st 2004. "After the generally low dynamic levels and relatively slow pace of the AMM trio set on 1 May, the MEV trio opened with the blast of Alvin Curran playing the sho far, a trumpet made from a rams horn, a defiantly primitive, prototypical music, fit to leave the walls of the Conway Hall, like some new Jericho, pitched down fiat. If I spoke earlier of the way in which AMM might deal, in Reeve and Kerridges phrase, with the internal, microscopically-enlarged body surface which becomes a landscape - and the same is true of some of Teitelbaum and Currans quieter use of radically pitch-shifted and extended samples - particularly that ululating operatic-theatrical voice, coming to sound almost like something from AMMs label-mates FURl - then this is the extrovert mode, which refuses any easy accommodations. Which division is inherent; as Bourdieu explains, the culture which unifies via the medium of communication is also the culture which separates via the culture of distinction, and which legitimates distinctions. It may be, as Adorno remarks, that a work of art is great insofar as it registers a failed attempt to reconcile such objective antinomies; failure then being in the highest sense the measure of success." - Harry Gilonis. |

| "Heavy duty collaboration LP by BS and belgian artist/gurner Ludo Mich. Side A documents the 2006 live appearance at Instal. A great crystal clear desk recording which puts you within feet of the saliva and sweat drench. While side B is a three piece electro-accoustic, smoked out, brain workover. Some of our most outthere stuff. Edition of 250 so get moving, nerdass." -Chocolate Monk |

Artist: MICHAEL AND THE MUMBLES Title: S/T Format: LP Label: Destijl Country: USA Price: $14.00 |
| "Before Michael Yonkers would revise the history of recorded music with the clarion chords of Microminature Love he was in a band called Michael and the Mumbles and they made this self-titled LP in 1966. Upon immediate spins, their would-be debut comes off as a naive, teenage trip thru the typified garage band moves of this era. But repeated spins reveal a darkness beneath what some dullard might be deceived by as its crisp, winsome visage. Its only to a slightly less visible degree that the Mumbles LP has the same characteristics that would make Micro the singularly original piece that is; its emotionally bleak themes, dissonant undercurrents, and recklessly wild performance. So, once again we have a Michael Yonkers LP that is going to turn the world upside down, make the college girls scream, and leave you wondering how many more times this can happen. Seriously, Pigeon Falls up here looks like a Riot on the Sunset Strip. Indulge yrself. PS. Michael and the Mumbles is on the king of all known formats (with a digital download coupon, natch). The mastertapes used herein are 45 yrs old and aside from the glitch on Cold Town they sound amazing." -Destijl |

Artist: MICKEY Title: S/T Format: 12" Label: Floridas Dying Country: USA Price: $17.00 |
| "As long as theres still hips to shake and asses to move, MICKEY will be there to rub it in deep and smother your world with their ineffable concoction of punk brilliance. The most promising new Chicago pop band since the Smith Westerns, these five individual odd fellows have unearthed the primal lunacy and indescribable glam irresistibility that has turned anyone whos seen them into blathering idiots, ready to swallow every stray flung drop of slimy sweat dripping from their guitar necks. After last years impeccable debut 7-inch on HoZac and their devastating trip through the wilderness of South by Southwests seedy underbelly, they turned enough heads and converted so many people, that I finally felt like it wasnt just us that was crazy for their inebriated, yet exasperatingly unique undulating glitter-pop formula. First pressing with a limited edition die cut LP cover limited to 500 copies." -Floridas Dying |
|
Artist: MICKEY Title: Shes So Crazy Format: 7" Label: Horizontal Action Country: USA Price: $6.00 |
| "When it comes to local bands in Chicago, it definitely goes in phases, as no one would have assumed a band such as MICKEY with its assortment of random ex-band members could have come up with a sound this ridiculously compelling. Rather than run down the list of their various past projects, its best to take Mickey for exactly what theyve become: a top-notch gutter-level glitter punk band that runs circles around everyone else, both live and now on record. What makes them special are the combined forces of experienced and inexperienced nuances that really shine on their recordings and will soon show the world how their now signature brand of glammed-up/dumbed-down shambolic pop music can hold up incredibly well under any circumstances. Everything from the unexpectedly touching T.Rex-style backup vocals on the show-stopping, "Shes So Crazy" to the heartfelt and brazenly-delivered innocence they muster up on the already-classic "I Am Your Trash," Mickey are quickly becoming Chicagos most notorious and best-loved band and we couldnt be more excited to offer their debut single for your adoring eardrums." - Horizontal Action. |

Artist: MICROCLIMATE Title: Untitled Format: Lathe Cut 8" Label: A Binary Datum Country: New Zealand Price: $12.00 |
| "A well known NZ musician/soundartist/all around good guy adopted the moniker of "Microclimate" for this project. Like a robotic Sunny Murray or maybe even what wouldve happened if Conlan Nancarrow had found a player drumkit... okay, whatever, it sounds fucking ace." - A Binary Datum. |

Artist: MIDDLETON, IAN Title: Aural Spaces Format: LP Label: Swill Radio Country: USA Price: $18.00 |
| "Ive been in touch with Ian Middleton for over 13 years now, lured into contact by a Remora lathe-cut LP, I believe, which sounded similar in intent to IFCO material that Karla and I were working on at the time. Ian was a somewhat prolific figure of the 90s UK underground scene, both with his music and his visual art. There was an LP for Swill Radio in the can, which ended up on Eclipse as there wasnt any money here to release it. Ians music has always had both organic and artificial elements combined with the vague melancholy of distant beauty. With Aural Spaces, Ian has refined and distilled his processes into a gorgeous electronic diamond. To quote my good friend Oskar Spee, Aural Spaces is an exotic, scientific, and beautiful perfume that slows down time and allows one to live, however briefly, in a better possible world. I couldnt agree more. There is not a wasted moment. Ian has kept a low profile the last few years, preferring to concentrate on his work and make it better, an approach of which I heartily approve. The sequencing of this LP is immaculate, a skill that is becoming a lost art in this shuffle-play world. Aural Spaces is totally removed from the confines of todays backwards looking fads and instead points its bow directly towards the future. Fighting the good fight." - Swill Radio. |

Artist: MIDNIGHT CIRCUS Title: Richard, Roger, Rodney, Rastus, Raoul, Roderick, Randy, Rupert Format: CDR Label: Hyped 2 Death Country: USA Price: $10.00 |
| "Midnight Circus appeared on the the absurdly rare Angst in my Pants compilation EP in 1980 (that also featured H2Ds Digital Dinosaurs), but they put most of their energy into the cassette-only wing of the D.I.Y. movement. They churned out gnarly, edgy, vinyl-worthy DIY-punk galore, and here are 21 of their favorite tracks from 1980-1983, mostly gathered from their five impossible-to-find cassette albums. With a deluxe 10-page insert with bio, photos and discography. (Our second "regular"/glass-mastered release!)" - Hyped2Death. |

Artist: MIGHTY BABY Title: A Jug Of Love Format: CD Label: Sunbeam Country: UK Price: $15.50 |
| "This is the first official CD release of UK psych legends Mighty Babys second and final album. A Jug of Love sank without a trace on its original appearance in late 1971, but has gone on to become one of the best-loved recordings of its time. Produced by Mike Vernon (David Bowie, Fleetwood Mac, Ten Years After), it showcases their fluid, expressive musicianship and the astonishing guitar playing of Martin Stone to glorious effect. This long-awaited official release has been assembled with the bands full involvement, and comes complete with rare photographs, full liner notes and four ultra-rare and previously unreleased bonus tracks, making it an essential purchase for all fans of acid folk and psychedelia." - Sunbeam. |
|
Artist: MIGHTY BABY Title: Live in the Attic Format: Double LP Label: Sunbeam Country: UK Price: $32.00 |
| "Previously released on CD by Sunbeam, now issued as a 180 gram double vinyl release. Mighty Baby are firmly established as one of the best-loved underground bands in British rock history. Combining elements of blues, folk, jazz and psychedelia, their unique brand of experimental rock n roll is brilliantly captured on these rare recordings, finally given an official release here. Three tracks were captured live at a gig supporting U.S. legends Love in March 1970, while the remainder were taped soon afterwards at Londons Olympic Studios. Finding the band midway between the blazing psychedelia of their self-titled November 1969 debut and the mellower sounds of their October 1971 swan song A Jug of Love, the set comes complete with sleevenotes, rare photographs and an introduction from their bassist, Michael Evans, making it simply essential for all fans of the band." - Sunbeam |

Artist: MIGONE, CHRISTOF Title: Crackers Format: CD Label: Locust Country: USA Price: $15.50 |
| "In 1997, electronic sound installation artist Christof Migone enlisted the bodily aid of a group of Canadians through classified ads and over the radio for a cracking session and interview at Ottawas Gallery 101. A what, you ask? Part ambient sound investigation and part wacked out art science project, Crackers is a 7 track collection of unadulterated recordings and clever digital remixes of the sounds of cracking knuckles, knees, wrists, jaws, toes, ankles, backs, necks, elbows, and hips. The percolating, popping polyrhythms are at once amusingly bubbly and oddly trance inducing. Cheaper than a trip to the chiropractor and far more entertaining. Crackers was first presented as an installation in a group show curated by Emmanuel Madan entitled Incredibly Soft Sounds at Gallery 101, in January 1998 (originally documented in an exhibition catalog and limited cd-r). Documentation of Crackers was also featured in Site Of Sound: Of Architecture And The Ear, a book with CD edited by Brandon LaBelle and Steve Roden (Los Angeles: Errant Bodies Press, 1999) and presented the following year as a solo installation curated by Michael J. Schumacher and Ursula Scherrer at Studio 5 Beekman in New York City, January 2000." - Locust |

Artist: MIGRANTES Title: Monsoon Moods Format: LP Label: Eclipse Country: USA Price: $12.00 |
| This is the 2nd LP by Migrantes (Jason Bill {guitar, air organ, Hammond organ, cymbal} & Caroline Vickers {Hammond organ & vocals}) of Tucson, AZ. Pressed in an edition of 536 copies and housed in a lovely printed full color jacket, this is a sublime record! For those that have never been there, the desert signifies space, sand, and nothing. When I (who live nowhere near any deserts) first visited Jason & Caroline (who live smack in the middle of one), that was what I had thought too. I was a bit surprised that the desert in fact looks nothing like its platonic counterpart - it is in fact interlaced with ropy thorned plants, crawls with life of every species, and is inevitably circumscribed by distant mountains. For some, Monsoon Moods may capture the real desert, the one where home fires burn under looming stone, where love and life flourish in austerity. For me though this LP somehow encompasses sweaty nights in 100 degree summer warehouses, ghostly drives through Norfolk shipyards, the slow crack of datura pods drying in the sun, and all the other things that have grown inside j&c to buoy them up into this warmly inviting space illuminated by their big hearts. A stunning record that camouflages the simplicity of its ingredients with songs of glowing precision and vox-laced Hammond drones of vertical majesty. - Tom Carter. |
|
Artist: MIJ Title: Yodeling Astrologer Format: LP Label: Jackpot Country: USA Price: $20.00 |
| "Yodeling Astrologer (aka: Color By The Number) could be considered an anomaly, a one-off or a miracle of circumstance in the history of psychedelic pop music. Mij, a.k.a. Jim Holmberg was discovered by ESP owners while playing in Washington Square Park in the summer of 1968. His style and persona mesmerized the label heads, and he explained to them a recent auto accident had fractured his skull but left him changed. He perceived sound, color and vision differently and he had funneled this new world of perception directly into his music. All this was enough to warrant getting Mij into the studio to lay down a record of his rambly, cosmic folk songs. The entire album was recorded in three hours, first-takes and impromptu production intact, then pressed up and introduced to the world shortly thereafter. To focus on the yodeling aspect of the Yodeling Astrologer would miss some of the depth of this album. Not just a hippie novelty act of the time, this is a truly thoughtful and somewhat frenzied document. Like Buffy St. Maries Meditations, Linda Perhacs Parallelograms or Cold Fact by Rodriguez, this is an album of sincere folk songs colored with subtle psychedelic touches. Uneasy reverberations and soft echoes glide over Holmbergs breezy songs, creating a consistent sonic environment as spontaneous as it is intriguing. Available on vinyl for the first time since an incredibly limited original pressing in 1969 on ESP Disk." -Jackpot |

Artist: MIKAMI, KAN Title: -1 (Minus 1) Format: CD Label: PSF Country: Japan Price: $21.00 |
| "With the coming of spring, another year brings another bulletin from the mind of post-war Japans greatest blues singing surrealist poet, Kan Mikami. Part of the pleasure of Mikamis annual solo releases on PSF is plotting the changes in his rough-cut voice and guitar style. This time around the blues and enka feel of the last two or three albums has been pruned back to a more restrained psychedelic core. The voice too seems deliberately held in check, the melismatic flourishes excised in favour of a plain and meditative directness. The lyrics are as scabrous and bewildering as ever, focusing again and again on images of his native place in the north of Japan, but also devising a great triptych of spread legs, Bush and the wall of a Dada toilet. Another classic, then. Six tracks, twenty-nine minutes. Lyrics in Japanese and English." -- Alan Cummings |

Artist: MIKAMI, KAN Title: 19 Years 2 Months 16th Night Format: Double CD Label: Mikami Komuten Country: Japan Price: $42.00 |
| "A monster of a reissue -- by a long way the rarest item in Mikamis discography, a fanclub-only DLP released in an edition of 100. These are the very earliest recordings by surrealist folk legend Mikami, captured on tape in 1970 at the legendary Shibuya underground club and hangout, Station 70. The club used to host regular sessions by free-jazz heroes like Motoharu Yoshizawa and Kaoru Abe, while the cream of the citys avant-garde community rubbed shoulders with Japanese Red Army terrorists and Yukio Mishimas private army. Thrust into this ferment comes a nineteen year-old police academy dropout from the far north of Japan, armed with nothing but his guitar and a satchel full of coruscating, carnal songs of anger, lust and hate. This reissue isnt going to stick around for long either -- an edition of 777 copies, in a special card digipack." -- Alan Cummings. |

Artist: MIKAMI, KAN Title: 1972 Kochi University Live Format: CD Label: Mikami Komuten Country: Japan Price: $21.00 |
| "A long-circulated set of intense early recordings from Mikami. "Kan Mikamis 1972 Kochi University Live has long circulated in fan circles and is whispered to be one of the most powerful dates the bald colossus ever played. Captured live at Kochi University in front of a crowd of hyped-up wannabe student revolutionaries, Mikami breathes raging white-heat into a set of lurid, rabble-rousing classics. Stunning cover painting by Kazuki Tomokawa. Special card jacket, limited edition of 1000." - Mikami Komuten. |
|
Artist: MIKAMI, KAN Title: 1979 Format: CD Label: PSF Country: Japan Price: $21.00 |
| "Twelfth solo album from Kan Mikami in as many years -- and, seemingly, the last in this monumental series. Mikami is Japans undisputed, one and only voice of urban folk surrealism. 1979 presents few surprises for the converted -- tightly gripped clusters of electric A-minor riffing, weird phrasing, and those unmistakable honey-over-broken-glass vocals. Even better than usual are Mikamis bizarre and incisive ruminations on the state of modern Japan (megaliths in the garden, a Gibson guitar hang from the rafters of a rural shrine, the return of Elvis, sake-guzzling crabs and the resurrection of the dead). As a poet-analyst of middle-aged male frustrations and everyday epiphanies in the toilet, Mikami has no equal (well, maybe Richard Meltzer). Comes with full English translations of the lyrics and linernotes." - Alan Cummings. |
|
Artist: MIKAMI, KAN Title: Bachi - From Oak Village Format: CD Label: Turtles Dream Country: France Price: $19.00 |
| "Universal songs. Beyond language and meaning stands the blues. Not the one the GIs brought with their pack in Japan, but Kan Mikamis own vision seen through the prism of enka music. Such songs we cannot find in popular music nowadays. The blues, its spirit and its agonizing mood comparable to the Portuguese fado. Black songs, free form songs, with their beauty and violence, rudimentary electric enka ill-treated Blues tore to pieces. We could almost hear Blind Willie Johnsons ghost activating the guitar and the voice. Kan Mikami strums his guitar with violence and sensuality, telling stories hardly ever told in Japanese songs, at the edge of black humor, surrealism and Dada. And his voice is unique, nearing violence, screams and a sticky melancholy. Bachi was recorded by François Dietz at the end of Kan Mikami French tour at studio CCAM in Vandoeuvre-lès-Nancy. Nine songs where the voice bears new inflexions never heard on his previous recordings, maybe close to an exotic folklore as dreamt by our western imagination. Sombre and moving Chants skinned by his harsh voice, with guitar on the background, haunting lavish blues." - Turtles Dream. |

Artist: MIKAMI, KAN Title: Barking Practice///White Lines Format: CD Label: PSF Country: Japan Price: $21.00 |
| "Two new heavy-hitting blasts from Japans indefatigable master of the psychedelic, surrealist blues. After a recent European tour and an hour-long special on Japanese television, the wonderfully titled Barking Practice /// White Lines finds Kan Mikami back in the studio in one-take guitar and vocal mode. Theres a depth of song spirit on display here that beggars belief -- the guitar bites in all the right place, and Mikamis voice is tuned to a new pitch of hard-won soulfulness, in turns bristle-harsh, lush, fractured, deep as all hell. Staggering work. Includes English lyrics and some fabulously atmospheric photos by Paolo Patrizi." - FE. |

Artist: MIKAMI, KAN Title: Jazz And Other Things Format: CD Label: PSF Country: Japan Price: $21.00 |
| "Fifth album for the label, and another astounding visionary triumph for the emotionally bursting singer/guitarist. The second track here, where Mikami enunciates just one word over and over, is one of the most spirally, physically stroked tracks in the extensive PSF catalog (were only talking about the worlds most aesthetically perfect record label). "Mikami is the blues; pure uncut humanity and universal force that dont need no words ? you going to tell me you didnt understand a single word of Blind Willie Johnsons Dark Was the Night, or Loren Mazzacanes early moaning, or even Aylers soul scream? Mikamis got a voice, a soul, and a guitar and you should be able to deal with those." - Alan Cummings. Comes with English notes and lyric translations. |
