Artist: BODYSNATCHERS
Title: s/t
Format: 7"
Label: 540
Country: USA
Price: $7.00
"A reissue of the self-titled debut 7-inch from Australias BODYSNATCHERS, originally released in 1979 by Savage Music. Recorded the same day and in the same studio as YOUNG IDENTITIES. "Formed in early 1978, the band were a short lived studio based outfit. ROD  & GAVIN MCLEOD were members of two other local punk outfits THE YOUNG IDENTITIES and JUST URBAIN. When the opportunity arose for a cheap and nasty recording session, the 3 piece decided to fill in the last remaining time slot by cramming in 2 short sharp songs that didnt quite fit in with the sounds arising from the rest of the Brisbane music scene. Drawing on the likes of the Gang of Four, A side Frantic was a re-write of a Just Urbain song while its flipside Mystery is a sped up/hacked up cover of the Velvets Venus in Furs. The record has a jarring sound with the vocals more whispered than yelped, while the vintage drum machine drone adds an additional spectral quality. Above and beyond that, it still has the trademark bass heavy, non production values much loved by the rest of the Savage Music family. Released as a 300 limited edition with photo copied cover in 1979, its sound stands as the odd, stumbling step-kid of the label and the band was never to be seen or heard of again. Frantic mystery indeed!" -540.

Artist: CLEAN, THE
Title: Odditties
Format: Double LP
Label: 540
Country: USA
Price: $25.00
"Its interesting to note that by the time most folks in the northern hemisphere got their first taste of The Clean (circa 1985), they all but packed it in. Yep, tis true. 85 was the year of the first great Kiwi invasion (vinyl wise) with the Flying Nun roster leading the way. And there was nary a dud to be found. And such wonderful and unusual names: Tall Dwarfs, Sneaky Feelings, The Puddle, Scorched Earth Policy and of course, The Clean. Their trio of 12" EPs were rabidly devoured by a curious and enthusiastic cognoscenti. You didnt buy one, you bought em all. Same goes for the 7-inchers. And there just wasnt enough. Not only of Clean records, but Clean material! Then one day in some long forgotten order came a copy of the Odditties cassette. The sales rep had included it as a promo, claiming he couldnt shift em (cassette love being at something of a nadir back then). Ill take whatever you got was my reply. And I hadnt even played it yet. But I knew that even though it had gotten runted out on to tape only format, there was no doubt it contained a treasure trove of aural gems. You couldnt help but think that Odditties was to The Clean what Whatever Happens Next was to Swell Maps. Which, more or less, is what it is. Recorded between 1980-82 Odditties is a thorough compendium of alternate takes, addled miscues, riffing zoners and back burner gems. Never easy to come by, even the CD version had scant distro through the 90s. This bunch of songs has been tagged as the ones that got away. But hold on there pard, this story aint done. Cut to 2012 and the inimitable Austin label, Five Four O, has taken up the call and wrangled this behemoth of slippery southern psychedelia into the format it has always so richly deserved: the double LP. Housed in fetching and historical gatefold sleeve to boot." - 540.

Artist: EGO SUMMIT
Title: The Room Isnt Big Enough
Format: LP
Label: 540
Country: USA
Price: $15.00
"I can almost remember the day that REP sent me the first issue of this LP. Taking it out of the package I glommed the title, looked at who was participating and snorted appreciatively. EGO SUMMIT-perfect! DON HOWLAND, JIM SHEPARD, RON HOUSE, TOMMY JAY and MICHAEL were all guys whose impact on the world of music (as it is known) was questionable, but all of them were well-known at the sub-underground level, and it was damn certain they all felt like kings! Between them they had created sounds and records that were legendary and influential, but the fact that they were all bums dedicated to living in Columbus, Ohio made the reality of their impact something that was hard to appreciate if you lived further away than Dayton (home of GBV). But as the years peeled away, oddball record collectors (and perhaps, even, the women who love them) have come to appreciate the insane form-moves this cabal of record collectors was up to. By the time of this release, theyd been putting out records for years, with bands as diverse as GIBSON BROS., BASSHOLES, VERTICAL SLIT, V-3, GREAT PLAINS, MIKE REP & THE QUOTA, TRUE BELIEVERS (OH), and in various solo incarnations of one form or another. Each had evolved a dinstinctive sound, redolent of every goddamn record hed ever heard-from Ramblin Thomas to the Twinkeyz to Armand Schaubroeck Steals to Destroy All Monsters, and they were ready to roll it all out. Ego Summit functions like a download of everything theyve ever really loved, from the VUs Live 69 to Quicksilvers cover of Buffy Ste. Maries Codine, all piled up in a beautifully loose garage band jumble. Im never sure whether my fave track is Ron Houses Rise Sherry (with its lazy approximation of the original Contortions slide guitar/bass dualism), Jim Shepards abosultely blown talling-blues, We Got It All (the best experiment in the form since the Minutemens History Lesson Part Two), or Don Howlands Wife Blues (a track that makes every motion by Spencers Blues Explosion extraneous), but the whole goddamn thing is great. A totally superior listen, by a bunch of clowns who were their own best fans. And knew why. Now you do too."- Byron Coley.

Artist: GUTTERIDGE, PETER
Title: Pure
Format: Double LP
Label: 540
Country: USA
Price: $27.00
"PETER GUTTRIDGE is the man who launched a thousand Flying Nun bands. Founding member of THE CLEAN, THE CHILLS, THE GREAT UNWASHED, SNAPPER and THE PUDDLE. Gutteridge released one solo album, Pure, on Xpressway Records in 1989 which was recorded between 1986-1987. Pure is "a collection of fragments and completed songs recorded on a Fostex 4 track. They were all written 2 tape, ideas going down as I made them up. I was my own technician. There were no studio bills or aesthetics 2 deal with. Recording in a studio after this experience was a frustration. Once in a while, I believe u become a kind of channel, even if slightly muddled. The tainted shamen? I dont know. What I can say is this record yer hopefully holding in hand had its genesis long b4 I ever picked up a guitar. Ive always loved a dirty drone. Notes corrupted and split apart by the miracle of the sympathetic note-i.e. Bagpipe, chanters, organs, pianos, ad infinitum. Throw a few clear notes in and you achieve creation on yr own terms. Link it up 2 the background hum of the universe doing its thing and u have hypnosis in a sound. Shmaya. Now a word about distortion-fate smiled on me the day an Alron Doubler fell into my hands. Transistors are indeed wonderful things-that multiplicity of notes generated bespeaking some giant periodic table of the cosmos spewing song out of yr humble speakers. I was always blown away by the sheer variety of directions made possible by this small simple piece of divine circuitry with just 2 knobs! And I had the time, I realized this was the moment. This thing had been breathing through me all my life! The stars were in the right position 2 deliver a dose of cosmic junk 2 the hungry ears of N.Z. (The guys 2 doors along View St, Morley, Merritt and visiting co-conspirators thought the same, getting onto and forming their own opinions and units of corruption. ie. Dead C and other miscellaneous. Details-I havnt really got the patience today-whew Dunedin 1986, 7, & 9, quite a remarkable place)." - 540.

Artist: JUST URBAIN
Title: Burning
Format: 7"
Label: 540
Country: Australia
Price: $7.00
"One of the greatest bands ever to come from the early Australian punk scene which is why they made the number 36 spot on Johan Kugelbergs top 100 DIY 45s.A bunch of guys, all to varying degrees somewhat disengaged from mainstream culture & wanting something different. A bunch of guys living in a then non connected world but willing to make the effort to do something beyond go to the footie or go to the pub, like buy the NME, hang out at the local import shop come together through mutual musical interests & form a band. It took some months and some membership movement but on an unremembered date in 78 JUST URBAIN (& The Young Identities) arrived. So what do you know we take it to the next level in 79-Just Urbain, Young Identities & The Bodysnatchers go into a recording studio & spend an afternoon & a few hundred dollars recording 3 singles & behold not only do we have some singles but our own label is born. Fantastic stuff although it didnt really improve our standing in the local scene. Not that we cared. I wouldnt say we had a lot of attitude but we had enough. You had to make the effort to find us as we werent looking for you." - 540.

Artist: JUST URBAIN
Title: Everybody Loves
Format: 7"
Label: 540
Country: Australia
Price: $7.00
"Another in 540s great series of reissues of classic and obscure early Australian punk 45s, this time from Brisbanes JUST URBAIN. A little less rock than a lot of classic Aussie punk, Just Urbain have an absolutely brutal guitar sound thats almost industrial in its drive... it sounds more like a circular saw than a musical instrument, and when you combine that with the primitive bashing of the vocals and rhythm section you get some pretty darn exemplary KBD punk. Killer!" -La Vida es Un Mus.

Artist: YOUNG IDENTITIES
Title: New Trends
Format: 7"
Label: 540
Country: Australia
Price: $7.00
"The second and even better seven-inch from this Brisbane teenpunk outfit. The amped-up production and snotty swagger of New Trends has made it an Aussie want list staple for year; the impossibly rare original picture sleeve has ensured it never leaves those same lists. Thank 540 for saving you some zeros with this reissue." -Ryan Richardson (Ryebread Rodeo).
