Artist: ASHLEY/WALTER MARCHETTI, ROBERT
Title: Oct. 25th, 2001: Merkin Concert Hall, NYC
Format: Double LP
Label: Choose
Country: Germany
Price: $55.00
"Back in 2001, Thomas Buckner organized a series of concerts at Merkin Hall in New York City. The idea was to have a contemporary classic composer inviting another composer, a kind of alter-ego, to perform together. When Robert Ashley, whose concert was considered the peak of the whole series of events, decided to invite his old friend Walter Marchetti, it was immediately clear that there would have been something unforgettable going on. The night of October 25th, 2001, the audience at the Merkin Hall had the privilege of being present at one of the more dense, intimate and breathtaking sonic events in contemporary music history. Sides A and B include the live rendering of two Walter Marchetti sound works previously issued on CD by Alga Marghen. A 25-minute excerpt of Nei Mari del Sud. Musica in Secca and one painful variation from De Musicorum Infelicitate. The performance of those tape pieces was conceived as an action theatre event, the first concert of the legendary Italian composer in the States after more than 30 years! Side C includes the recording of Robert Ashleys Yes, But Is It Edible?, a composition for piano and voice dedicated to Thomas Buckner who performs it with the composer. This 27:30 min long piece is a true masterpiece, with Robert Ashley introducing us to creation and coincidence, space and time, private parts and characters, with direct references to the ONCE group and his friends David Behrman, Alvin Lucier, Gordon Mumma, Pauline Oliveros, Terry Riley, Blue Gene Tyranny, George Manupelli, as well as Maria Callas and Patsy Cline, Elvis and Lennon, Monteverdi, pop music, Irish and Jewish new-comers Broadway musical parody of America, Lloyd-Weber, Saturday Night Life, Chinese opera, mariachi bands, country music and much more. Side D includes Practical Anarchism, a touching homage that Robert Ashley dedicated to Walter Marchetti. Previously published as a text by Alga Marghen in the booklet of the Antibarbarus CD, this is actually the first time ever that this piece for solo voice, performed by the same Robert Ashley, is made available on record. Also on side D is Musica Per un Bicchiere non Molto Grande, an early ZAJ piece by Walter Marchetti, performed here by Robert Ashley. Edition of 300 copies." - Choose.

Artist: DREYBLATT, ARNOLD
Title: Choice
Format: LP
Label: Choose
Country: Germany
Price: $21.00
"Often characterized as the most rock-oriented of American minimalists, Dreyblatt has cultivated a strong underground fan base for his transcendental and ecstatic music. Now, for his latest issue on Choose Records, Berlins Jörg Hiller aka Konrad Sprenger has made his own "Choice" from Arnold Dreyblatts own extensive archive of live recordings, ranging from over thirty years of live performances from 1977 to 2007. This is very much a "collectors LP", which plays as a carefully curated sonic selection, rather than as a chronological sequence of individual recordings. The collection ranges from seminal recordings by many of the historical ensembles who performed as Dreyblatts Orchestra of Excited Strings in the States and in Europe, to some of Dreyblatts most compelling solo projects making for some very surprising listening, especially for those who may already know Dreyblatts currently available studio recordings." - Choose.

Artist: FULLMAN & KONRAD SPRENGER, ELLEN
Title: Ort
Format: LP
Label: Choose
Country: Germany
Price: $19.00
"Ellen Fullman, composer, instrument builder and performer was born in Memphis, Tennessee in 1957. Irish-American, and of partial Cherokee Indian ancestry, with the distinction of having been kissed by Elvis at age one, Fullman studied sculpture at the Kansas City Art Institute before heading to New York in the early nineteen-eighties. In Kansas City she created and performed an amplified metal sound-producing skirt and wrote art-songs which she recorded in New York for a small cassette label. In 2000, Fullman received a grant to live and work in Berlin for one year. A former American colleague from her New York years, composer Arnold Dreyblatt, already based in Berlin for many years, introduced Fullman to Jörg Hiller, aka Konrad Sprenger, two generations her junior. At the beginning, Dreyblatt suggested to record an album of songs, harking back to Fullmans own southern heritage and the promise of her early song-work left unfulfilled, mirrored to Hillers fascination with early American folk traditions inspired by Harry Smiths documentary recordings. Truly an exercise in shifting contexts, Fullmans haunting voice blends eerily with the sonorities of her instrument, which seems to function as a kind of cosmic fiddle. Hiller, as producer, arranger and musician, has created a “wall of sound” behind Fullman with a potpourri of acoustic instruments, including Dreyblatts own “excited strings bass”, a zither, violin, electric bass and even tympani along with the Long String Instrument." - Choose.

Artist: FULLMAN, ELLEN & KONRAD SPRENGER
Title: Ort
Format: LP
Label: Choose
Country: Germany
Price: $20.00
"In 1981, at her studio in Brooklyn she began developing her life-work, the 70 foot (21 meter) Long String Instrument, in which rosin-coated fingers brush across dozens of metallic strings, producing a chorus of minimal organ-like overtones which has been compared to the experience of standing inside an enormous grand piano. Ort, represents a unique blend of musical styles, from hillbilly/country & western to contemporary minimal, with shades of art-rock. With this release the label seems to be pointing to a number of diverse musical directions, opening a vast field of possibilities for the future." - Arnold Dreyblatt. CD also available.

Artist: HAYWARD, ROBIN
Title: States of Rushing
Format: LP
Label: Choose
Country: Germany
Price: $19.00
"Robin Hayward has completely redefined the tuba as sound-producing medium, releasing a sonic potential which ranges between the extremes of  noise and microtonality. Upon first listening, one finds it unimaginable that many of these sounds can be produced on a tuba, but Hayward has dedicated his life not only to empirical experimentation, but also to the academic scientific study of the acoustics of brass instruments.  Rarely has a musician of this caliber immersed himself so deeply in the boundaries of his instrument.  The resulting compositions make demands on us: they force us to sense the air pressure in contact with the physical world without framing the sounds in the conventions of contemporary or traditional music.  In this sense, Haywards approach is refreshing and revolutionary. In these extraordinary recordings there is no cultural intermediary - it is as if we find ourselves inside the instrument itself, being pushed back and forth against the walls of a giant membrane or tunnel; left to our own metaphorperceiving natural processes, minimal music, mechanical movement." - Choose.

Artist: SPRENGER, KONRAD
Title: Miniaturen
Format: LP
Label: Choose
Country: Germany
Price: $21.00
"Miniaturen or in English: Miniatures is Konrad Sprengers first solo album. The dictionary defines a miniature as a representation or image of something on a small or reduced scale. Sprenger worked for over two years to find a grand form in which to represent his myriad bagatelles; drawing from hundreds of finished and unfinished recordings recorded over the last ten years with a diverse palette of musicians, artists and friends. The result is an unlikely juxtaposition of 32 abbreviated sonoric vignettes, each with its own internal logic, each a setting within a diverse range of musical styles (ranging from pop, Kraut, baroque, American minimalism etc.), recognizable on the one hand, yet always unexpected. The instrumentation is equally abstruse: from mechanical bird organs and automated musical machines from the 1800s to sine waves, harmonium, timpanies, steel drum, sirens and countless other examples; this is a sonic exploration of endless possibilities where each work takes the listener one step forward, building on perceptual associations, so that one never knows where one will end up next. The sonic miniatures function as reduced modules, always referring to some other music or sounds we must have heard somewhere, but which we are forever unable to pin down. After producing recordings by Ellen Fullman, Arnold Dreyblatt, Doc Schoko and countless others, and performing for years as Konrad Sprenger with such luminary bands as Ethnostress and Ei and the art group Honey-suckle Company, Sprenger has finally made his own artistic statement with Miniaturen once again adorned with a cover by artist Jonas Lipps." -Arnold Dreyblatt.
