Artist: 200 YEARS
Title: s/t
Format: CD
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $15.00
"200 YEARS is none other than those straw dogs of skull counting (and flowers!), BEN CHASNY (SIX ORGANS OF ADMITTANCE) and ELISA AMBROGIO (MAGIC MARKERS) Yep, thats what they called them back in grade school-and thats where the storm clouds started massing. It would be years and many cold dishes of revenge before this unique version of socialization would blossom into the music that both are rumored for today. They still dont lie, but the debut 200 Years LP sounds like theyre figuring out a way to build around the smoking holes, instead of the rough old craniometry count down. If destruction is a type of construction, then you can say we here at DCHQ knew they had it in em the whole time! Like magnets, or Voltron, apart these two have wreacked havoc with electricity and enemies, but when joined create a force of absolute cohesion and power. Quiet-like, though! 200 Years is to a listening experience like seeing is through a dirty window-you cant see anything clear out there but the light. And thats more than you got in the room. Sonically, its basically Ben and Elisa with guitars, Elisas voice, Bens guitar alone, the breath of a harmonium, the faintest strains of piano. Theres more playing in the mix than just that, but its like that ol dirty window-the sounds are more not there than they are there." -Drag City.

Artist: AQUARIANA
Title: S/T
Format: LP
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $21.00
"In the group of celestial beings that was THE SOURCE FAMILY, RIANA stood out with an almost angelic vibration. Even before she became one of FATHER YODs 13 wives, her presence was exceptional to all who met her. She was among the first to join The Source Familys brotherhood, and she brought her youthful energy, bright with laughter and joy, to all the activities within the household, starting with morning mediation and on through the day. In 73 and 74, the music was pouring out of the Father House, with the releases Kohoutek, Contraction, Expansion and All Or Nothing at All credited to Father Yod and THE SPIRIT OF 76, with additional recordings Penetration: An rian Symphony, To the Principles for the Children, Im Gonna Take You Home and Savage Sons of Ya Ho Wa credited to YA HO WA 13, the group of talented young men who formed the nucleus of The Source Familys house band. The wild spirit of these records is the essence of The Source Family myth. But there were many members of their brotherhood, and many of them were sisters. After all this male energy had gained release, Father felt it was time to project the female energy they had on the next release. Plans for rianas album were started, but this was during a time of upheaval and movement for the family that resulted in them moving from their base in Los Angeles to Hawaii. It was there that Father passed over in 1976. After that, the Source brotherhood slowly dispersed and carried on to other phases in their life. It wasnt until the re-appearance of The Source Family records on the Japanese CD box set God and Hair in the mid-90s that a significant amount of energy came back to The Source Family. Since then, several albums of material from the Isis rian Archives have been released, as well as two books, and earlier this year, "The Source Family" documentary. Here in the year of 2013, it is an ideal time to bring rianas music to the people as was meant to happen nearly 40 years ago. Unfortunately, she is not here with us to journey back to the place and time of these performances; riana passed over in the mid-90s. But in the grooves of this LP, riana lives again! She plays with a questing passion and soulful devotion, with all but one song performed solo on the piano. Her lyrics sing of the spirit with pure visions, but are all directed to the source through the focus of her true love: Yahowa. rianas was a life devoted to improving life on the planet for all people, and as she worked towards her goals, she touched the lives of many people. In addition to the son she bore Father, her music here stands as one of her greatest achievements, finally to be shared with the world she loved so deeply." - Drag City.

Artist: ART & LANGUAGE AND THE RED CRAYOLA
Title: Corrected Slogans
Format: LP
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $19.00
"Corrected Slogans was first pressed by Art & Language and The Red Crayola in 1976; it was the first mention of the The Red Crayolas name on LP since 1968. The only review it received at the time was by Glenn OBrian in Interview magazine; his response was a positive one, though he found the material ironic. By the time the album was made available to the public, it was clear that The Red Crayola would continue with Jesse Chamberlain joining Mayo Thompson. This was the start of five years of steady activity. Corrected Slogans was repressed on the UK label Recommended Records in 1981. Drag City reissued it for the first time on CD in 1997." - Drag City.

Artist: ASKEW, ED
Title: Imperfiction
Format: LP
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $16.00
"Anyone who loves "outsider" folk legends from Tom Rapp to Roy Harper or Gary Higgins to Peter Grudzien knows the name of the legendary bard ED ASKEW. His 1968 ESP Record Ask the Unicorn is quite simply one of the eras finest artifacts, full of lilting, prickly, chiming songs of loss, love and escapism-maybe the gay Astral Weeks for the underground. Around the turn of the century, an equally compelling second album surfaced, Little Eyes, where our hero, armed only with tiple (a sort of latin uke/banjo/guitar), laid out more heartbreaking baroque odes, all recorded in a single continuous take! Recorded for ESP in 1970, it never got past the test pressing stage and was eventually lost, until De Stijil came sniffing some thirty years on. In the early 80s, Ed got his hands on a harpsichord and tiple and a simple two-track recorder and laid down some of his tunes hed been carrying around for years. Released only on cassette in miniscule quantities in 1984, Imperfiction contains the same emotionally raw yet wry observations, in a decidedly no-frills sonic setting. Broken glass on the sidewalk outside, nice boys he meets in bars, and the joyous act of songwriting itself are all fair game for subject matter, giving a unique and intimate self-portrait of a truly gifted songwriter. Imperfiction is now available for the first time on vinyl via Galactic Zoo Disk/Drag City, with vintage photos and liners and sound that will transport fans back to the old days of Askew in all of its seemingly transient glory. Fans of Daniel Johnson, early Jonathan Richman, Smog, Palace Brothers and other lo-fi troubadours would be wise to snatch up this limited pressing-as all other GZDisk/Drag City titles have sold out early and often." -Drag City

Artist: AUGUST BORN
Title: August Born
Format: LP
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $14.00
"August Born is a collaboration between Japans Hiroyuki Usui and Six Organs of Admittances Ben Chasny. Well versed heads already know Hiroyuki under his alias of L, in which he recorded the subtle psychedelic gem, Holy Letters . Along with spending time in Marble Sheep, he also played drums for Fushitsusha for six years and played in an early incarnation of Ghost, which can be seen on the live DVD, Metamorphosis .Holy Letters was an early template for Six Organs when it was released nearly ten years ago. August Born started off as a game that was based on the idea of fortuitous mistranslation. That is: even if they didnt understand exactly what the other wanted to do or where to go with the song, the songs themselves would find their own direction. The project started with the scraping sounds of a bird being buried. As improbable as it seemed, these sounds eventually created music. August Born is a mellow work seamlessly blending Hiroyukis guitar, vocals, vibes, harmonium, bass, drums, cello, field recordings, and didgeridoo with Chasnys unmistakable voice and guitar. The tunes found here hold rewards that will only grow with patience and time." - Drag City. CD also available.

Artist: BATOH, MASAKI
Title: Brain Pulse Music
Format: LP
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $22.00
"Brain Pulse Music is the result of years of research into the bioelectric functions of the human brain combined with the traumatic aftermath of Japans Great East Earthquake. All seven Brain Pulse Music tracks are a prayer/requiem. They are a tamashizume (a requiescat) and tamafuri (reinvigoration of the withered soul) to the victims of the Great East Japan Earthquake. Two pieces are composed of BPM machine recordings; the remaining five are rhythms and melodies commonly heard in religious rituals and provincial festivals using traditional Japanese instruments. This seems to have been a natural reaction for Batoh, considering these rituals were quite often carried out to appease gods thought to cause epidemics and disasters--for instance, the famous Gion and Aoi festivals held in Kyoto both originated as a purification ritual addressing the gods that bring about calamity upon the people. The BPM recordings are the furthest incursion Batoh has made into the deep space and mystery of the human condition. The acoustic recordings are the purest expressions of his traditional folk influence that he has released in over twenty years of music-making, a deep and soulful expression intended to calm and aid in the healing of all around him. And so from the rubble of Japans damaged bodies and minds, the power of Brain Pulse Music has emerged." -Drag City

Title: Collected Works 1995-1996
Format: LP
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $14.00
"The works that Collected Works collects are A Ghost From The Darkened Sea and Kikaokubeshi, two albums recorded and released in 1995 and 1996, during the final period of conceptualization for Ghosts Lama Rabi Rabi album. These two solo records allowed Batoh to explore musics and textures in an entirely free space from the already quite free (and rapidly morphing) Ghost. This is a solo record in a very complete sense: acoustic guitar, marimba, harmonium, voodoo drum, bells, hurdy gurdy, organ, drums, horns, duff, Moog synthesizer and the mysterious giri giri pee are all played by Batoh. In addition, field recordings done by Batoh are in the mix -- birds, seashore, winds on a bluff, industrial noise, metro, mountains, etc. The two works are fundamentally different: A Ghost From The Darkened Sea being an earthy collection of folk-songs; Kikaokubeshi composed almost entirely of a dreamy ambience." - Drag City

Artist: BATOH, MASAKI & ESPVALL, HELENA
Title: s/t
Format: LP
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $16.00
"Helena Espvall and Masaki Batoh are known to open-eared music listeners for their collaborations with other artists -- artists with names such as Ghost, Espers, Damon & Naomi, Fursaxa, Tom Rapp, Lukas Ligeti, Bert Jansch, among many others. By collaborating with each other, theyve made one of the most beautiful recordings either one of them has yet participated in. They first met at a festival in the United States in 2006. Batoh presented Helena with a handmade bamboo instrument; short on spare celli, she gave him a copy of her solo CD. Afterwards, they stayed in touch. At some point Helena suggested an improvised musical collaboration. Batoh wrote back and said: Actually Im too busy now to think about music... if my idols Moondog, Henry Cowell or Toru Takemitsu wanted me, Ill refuse their orders. Several weeks later, he had a change of heart. He contacted Helena and said that he felt they should record not improvisations only, but songs as well. Helena made a demo of some Scandinavian folk songs that she remembered in her spirit from growing up in northern Sweden, thinking that maybe theyd record one. The recording session was held in Tokyo over four days in December 2007. For instruments fans, this session might be a treasure. So many strings were used: 6- and 12-string guitar, banjo, cello, hurdy-gurdy, harp, contra bass, chappa Tibetan bells, Kin (Buddist metallic bowl), timpani, bass marimba, vibraphone, thunder sheet & on & on. Six of the Swedish traditional tunes were reconstructed, along with Batohs arrangement of Death Letter, a classic Son House delta blues song. Additionally, a European medieval tune was addressed in its own arrangement and expression. Zeranium, a dreamy folk tune that Batoh wrote for Damon & Naomi (they didnt use it), was re-arranged for this session as well. The improvisations were done on the last recording day, with no overdubs. Completely Free was the essential concept. For one of them, they were joined by Batohs fellow Ghosts Takuyuki Moriya (contra bass), Kazuo Ogino (piano,Celtic harp) and the santur player Mayumi Nagayoshi. The same morning, Helena had received notice that her grandmother suddenly had died, and that a dear friend had chosen to end his life. Two death letters in one day? There is great emotion reflected in the improvisations. And great depth and beauty throughout the whole Helena Espvall & Masaki Batoh album." - Drag City

Artist: BISHOP, SIR RICHARD
Title: Polytheistic Fragments
Format: CD
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $14.00
"It goes without saying that Polytheistic Fragments is an instrumental release - who among us would want it otherwise? In the tradition of his classic debut, Salvador Kali, this new record features equal amounts of improvisation and composition. Sir Richards powers lie in his ability to captivate with just the sound of his guitar, but he doesnt completely abandon studio processes, which allow Polytheistic Fragments to communicate a greater wholeness: all Sir Rick, all the time, if you will. We have come to expect a few solo acoustic guitar pieces with the gypsy stylings of his hero, Django Reinhardt - and as if to tenderize our consciousness and prepare it for the ride, Cross My Palm with Silver meets and exceeds our expectations. Rub Al Khali is an ode to the oud, a northern African lute of sorts. On Free Masonic Guitar, Sir Richard manifests free form acoustic playing wholly in his own style. Peppering the mix are the sounds of electric guitar and lap steel guitar, bringing contrast and color. Hecates Dream is a dreamy praise to a dark Greek Goddess, but Tennessee Porch Swing and Canned Goods and Firearms switch gears to good old down home Americana and country twang. Sir Richard is renowned for his prowess and mastery with the guitar, but the piano playing on Polytheistic Fragments shows a fluid, meditative style. Saraswati is a lengthy river piece bathed in Hindustani serenity, while Cemetery Games is a short celebratory skeletal dance, with more light-heartedness than spook. In a record with so many spirits, Bishop fills in the space where necessary and rounds out the feeling with catchy tunes such as Elysium Number Five and Ecstasies in the Open Air. Polytheistic Fragments shows that the divinely inspired Sir Richard Bishop cannot be contained in one form." -Drag City.

Title: Tangier Sessions
Format: CD
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $14.00
"The tone of the guitar and Sir Richards gentle, loving touch with it hold forth from the first moment of Tangier Sessions, sitting clear and true in the home-recorded night air above the city. The album sequence is the precise order of the songs as they were conceived and recorded. Ricks all over the neck in the early going while sorting through the dynamics of the instrument -- in fact, guitarophiles, the first couple of songs feature Sir Richard Bishop playing without a plectrum for the first time ever! Towards the end of the first side of Tangier Sessions, Sir Richard and guitar begin to chill out and cut loose in a different way -- arriving in the moment that was imagined for them, they stretch out, finding themselves in open space with fewer changes. This is a place where a player like Sir Richard Bishop can relax while remaining totally focused and present, hearing what the guitar and he are capable of in real time. The discoveries of side one give way to the trilogy of songs that comprise the second side, and the issues presented by “Mirage” are revisited from another angle, another spot on the map in “International Zone,” leaving finally a sense of journey completed in the serene moments of “Let It Come Down.” The narrative that builds as a function of this (noble)man-guitar dialogue gives Tangier Sessions a visceral punch that makes for a singular listening experience, even in the crowded realm of solo acoustic guitar albums. Nobody plays the guitar like Sir Richard Bishop -- and on Tangier Sessions, hes found a guitar that nobody but him plays either." - Drag City.

Title: The Freak Of Araby
Format: LP
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $16.00
"Another album of acoustic guitar music from Sir Richard Bishop-- are you freakin nuts? The Freak Of Araby is a new direction for our distinguished gentleman, and just in the nick of time as well. Sir Ricks had it up to here with solo acoustic guitar records! The Freak Of Araby isnt even a solo record! And theres no acoustic guitar on it! So lets have no more of this kind of talk. Over his years with Sun City Girls, Richard Bishop threw a wide variety of music and sound against the wall -- and all of it stuck. Among those who know, hes reasonably fluent in any number of international music traditions, playing them for (mostly) fun and (sometimes) profit all over the place. The Freak Of Araby is the debut of Sir Richard Bishop and his Freak of Araby Ensemble, a talented quartet of players getting deep into the Middle Eastern mystic with hand drums, percussion, bass, drums, electric guitars and a heavy dose of Moroccan chanters, all of it captured with depth, detail and sympathy for the eternal enigma by engineer Scott Colburn. But a Sir Richard Bishop album with a backing band -- how did this happen? After recording a cover of Kaan Azzaman, written by Elias Rahbani, one of Lebanons finest songwriters, something dawned on Sir Richard. Half-Lebanese by birth (it didnt just occur to him later), he found himself suddenly possessed to really dig into Middle Eastern sounds. A pair of original melodies not fully developed at a prior recording session had the Arabic inspiration, so these were reattacked and finished in short order. Soon, Sir Richards head was flooded with some of the classic sounds spun for him by his grandfather back in his (way) younger days, like Farid Al-Atrache, Oum Kalthoum and Fairuz, along with other personal favorites, such as the guitarists Omar Khorshid and Mike Hegazi. In addition to the studio improvisation, Taqasim For Omar, the whole of The Freak Of Araby is dedicated to these inspiring players. Check em out. In addition to his soul-stirring electric guitar playing, Sir Richard grabbed a couple of Moroccan chanters and blew the house down on Blood-Stained Sands, providing an epic (not to mention epochal, heh heh) finish to this journey to the center of one-half of the family tree. This is music meant to be played live, and Sir Richards Freak Of Araby Ensemble intends to play it everywhere theres interest in hearing it. So get your Freak on." -Drag City.

Title: Bitchin Bajas
Format: Double LP

Country: USA
Price: $25.00
"...and at the heart of Bitchin Bajas, there is pure peace. Bitchin Bajas have been around the world in five years; chasing sonics through space and time and coming up with a lot of conclusions along their discographical path. Always, they push forward, recklessly consuming processes in order to realize their own works -- but the sound and the music regularly emerges with tranquil essence, bringing them and their listeners into a shared experience. Bitchin Bajas output has been remarkably diverse in search of this singular goal, which makes for great listening across multiple albums etc. -- and with the release of this new double-LP, they have mapped and traversed their own ecosystem as they journey in search of the aural epiphany, the true unknowing. With plenty of room stretched over four sides, Bitchin Bajas use their many methods to attain perfect flow throughout the 76 minutes of this self-titled record. Self-titled because this is who they are at their core; these are the flares and oscillations of their soul. They will be other things again, horizons will continue to rise and fade away in their path as they continue forward and upward -- but this self-titled record is a pure vision at the heart of Bitchin Bajas. Acoustic is the beginning. Eastern tonalities relocate Bitchin Bajas farther inside the source, finding the timeless time from long ago and slowly sliding via fader until then is now, until acoustic goes analog. Something pure and natural is happening -- within the sound, within the songs; in the album and in you. The shifts that come makes changes in your moods and your body temperature. Something delicate yet definite, gradually washing over your consciousness. Electricity just comes, it doesnt even begin. Bitchin Bajas is climate-controlled comprehension -- on one hand, an ultimate album, and on the other, barely even an album at all. What began in randomness, pitch-shifting and tape manipulation emerged in the cutting as a single direction, a journey in scales, divided by the format perfectly into four stages, eight discreet parts. Bitchin Bajas reach high and low in their consciousness as expressed through equalization to see (hear) what affect it will have on them -- and what it does to them, reaches through to you. The space found on Bitchin Bajas was located with organ, synthesizer, winds, xylophone and autoharp, employing a 1" 8-track tape machine to the fullest extent. Additional contributions from strings, keys, guitar and field recordings helped make Bitchin Bajas everything that it is." - Drag City.

"Bitchin Bajas are back... Bitchitronics, is ready with the quickness we expect from the Chi-based duo -- which is funny, since their area of expertise and mastery is in the area of synthetic ephemeral sonic languid-ity known more instinctively, inclusively (and lets face it, irresponsibly) as drone music. They make slow music at a fast pace is what were saying. Now these guys are paying attention to this on the micro-level because thats where their fun is, so how will you react when we tell you that the sound of Bitchitronics was a change so extreme they considered changing their name? Ha. Yeah, us too. They were revamping a bit on this one though, it isnt just about turning on the keyboard and getting cozy. This time, the concept was: use tape techniques to create and then solve problems -- but mainly, loops and edits were there to make things fun and the music great in the style of experimental tape pioneers upon whose shoulders the Bajas play. In keeping with the (unspoken, unacknowledged by the band) concept of catching air with tape, Bitchitronics is the first Bitchin Bajas record made as a trio, blending the blowing of flute into the mix of electric keys and posthuman tones and loops of tape atop other loops of tape, with the final result coming to us with all the ebbing and flowing of a breeze -- wind on wind, even! A veritable index of gases! Let the power of Bitchitronics fall over you; another green world of music made Baja fresh by the wandering ears and care-filled creations and re-creations of Bitchin Bajas." -Drag City.

Waves of the late light beam across the water, cool in the evening as we head out to tha club, where the guitars are MIDI, the synths bump n grind the beat and arc melodies high above the crowds head, and the gasping of the clubbers is always on the one. Jennifers sweet delivery is an ode to the stone soul joy of being out on the tiles. This tracks a blast from an alternate dimension of weirdness, perfectly nailed from top to bottom. Top of the charts man! Black Bananas will have you slippin on the dance floor with their all-new sound, Physical Emotions." - Drag City.

Artist: BLUE JEAN COMMITTEE/FINGERLINGS
Title: Massachusetts Afternoon b/w Embrace Me
Format: 7"
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $7.00
"The first in the Hometown Heroes collection of singles from regional music stars of decades past courtesy of Drag City and FRED ARMISEN Inc. THE BLUE JEAN COMMITTEE were the proud products of the late 70s Northampton, Massachusetts music scene. Comprised of some of the most talented and sought after local session musicians, the group was most defined by RICHIE CORNISHs busy talk-singing lyrical style. The gently soulful "Massachusetts Afternoon" celebrates a time in ones life when independence from the family somehow brings friends closer to one another, and the autumn sunset seems to go on and on forever. From Bath, England, THE FINGERLINGS were a prolific synth/post-disco band who released twelve EPs between 1981 and 1983. Meeting on their first day of art history class at the Bath School of Art and Design, they decided to form a group, and a month later, released their first single. Their most well known record cover (locally well known, that is) was a depiction of an ornate stained glass window from St. Philips Church in Bath. The cover was made of actual stained glass. "Embrace Me" was a huge local hit, its lyrics evoking imagery of neon-framed cities like Paris and Berlin." - Drag City.

Title: Valley Tangents
Format: LP
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $16.00
"Theres a new muse at the house of BLUES CONTROL. Yes, mother nature! Now located in the Woodstock of east Pennsylvania, Lehigh Valley, Blues Control conceived Valley Tangents far from the madding crowds theyd previously swarmed with and composed among. Could this be the reason for the homegrown, natural feel of the music, with the metronomical hissing of summer mosquito-bots behind their signature Debussy via Guaraldi qua Bley qua Hornsby pianisms, and the playful juxtapositions of a full spectrum of rock colors: stadium, industrial, psych and prog (to name just a few)? And yet, Blues Controls shape-shifting qualities could lead us to type them as a mystic lounge act, with spacey guitar leads, a clarion synth and the punch of real drums. Only to suddenly discover they were instead playing inside a world music bag, wrapping their mellow drug-mospheres around a crisp keyboard center, evoking heat and nature with waves radiating from seemingly formal western scales! The exotic and the classical, wedded together with a freedom the old masters couldnt imagine. Of course, man has always yearned to smoke the grass on the other side of his societys fence-like McCartney in the jungle playing his staid English beats while running through ebony and ivory scales, Blues Control are liable to superimpose the British blues over new waves just to feel the juice run down their legs. Upon hearing Valley Tangents, long-time listeners will surely attest that the band are increasingly capable of anything in the spectrum they feel should be integrated." - Drag City.

Artist: BULL & THE RHYTHM ACE, SANDY
Title: Live 1976
Format: LP
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $16.00
"Well further gifts abound, as this 1976 concert on Galactic Zoo Disk/Drag City will attest. Clearly, the explorations of Sandy Bull were not lost on the far-out audiences of the Bay Area, and though the heady days of the 60s have gone, the Berkeley heads are still in full force, hanging on Sandys every note with a clearly expressed delight as they wait for headliner Leo Kottke to take the stage. Even though there were no further albums after 1972s Demolition Derby (a candidate for unhinged, bottom-of- the-barrel brilliance), we can now hear that Sandy had expanded his sound even further than we could have imagined in the lost post-Vanguard silence. Rocking the then-pretty-new rhythm ace drum machine and utilizing pre-recorded tracks of bass and fuzz guitar (simulating how hed do mad overdubs in the studio really) and adding some pedal steel at one point, Sandy conjures whole new inflections over his classic sound. Of course, the performance is book-ended by classic electric loud workouts in pure, golden Sandy Bull form. Theres some pretty hilarious stage banter as well, with Sandy leading the audience through the wonders of his beat-box (and almost getting lost exploring the settings!) and then introducing the song Alligator Wrestler by discussing childhood memories from Florida recalled while witnessing serial masturbation during his recent stint in drug rehab. Too much! Sandy runs through his entire instrumental palette while performing a set of songs that never made it to vinyl (but recall some of his classic themes). The show is captured warmly on the tapes (recorded by veteran music biz man Hillel Resner, who also supplies fantastic notes that take us back to his 1976 frames of reference); a vital performance and a rare glimpse into the previously-unheard 1970s progressions of Sandys music. Its like being there yourself (albeit with a few between-song edits in your tape/memory) and we are damn grateful for the experience! If you are even a casual fan of guitar music or artists like John Fahey, Jack Rose or Robbie Basho, you owe it to yourself to delve into Sandy Bull & the Rhythm Ace, Live 1976." -Drag City.

Title: The Hexadic System
Format: Book
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $22.00
"Introducing a new approach to playing and composing music. It doesnt require the use of a computer or an internet hookup; all that the interested player will need is a guitar, a copy of The Hexadic System book -- and a regular deck of playing cards. The struggle of habit is a problem in all walks of life, particularly creative work. We dont always have an instinct to question the systems we are taught -- but consider the old adage about history being written by the winners. What does that imply about the processes with which we learn? Have alternate teachings been discarded over the years, like the lost gospels of the Bible, when their approach to lesson-making was deemed less worthwhile? The greatest value of the Hexadic System is to dissolve the musical structures that have been imposed on the players mind... Composing music without the outer-self, using the tools of games and divination, suggests Ben Chasny, in the text of The Hexadic System. In music, it is generally accepted that perceptions of tonality may vary, depending on where in the world one learns about music (as exemplified by the fundamental differences in western and eastern scales). One of the concerns that led to the writing of The Hexadic System was to proceed from a multimodal understanding available to 21st century musicians, but also to suggest an ordered approach to unfamiliar choices and techniques when composing and playing guitar music. Inspired by explorations in the thought of Ramon Llull, Gaston Bachelard, Heinrich Agrippa, and many other theorists in the various schools of combinatorial and image theory, Chasnys goal was to make a system of his own, addressing the most important form of decision making in his life -- the choices made with his guitar." "Any regular deck of playing cards can be used to execute the correspondences of The Hexadic System. You can play poker with them, or solitaire. However, to accent the ritual aspect of the Hexadic methodology, a custom deck was designed by Steve Quenell in collaboration with Ben Chasny. Face cards pay tribute to a number of figures who have influenced Six Organs of Admittance over the years. Markings on the cards specific to the Hexadic System are a part of the custom design of the Hexadic Deck. This deck can be purchased separately from The Hexadic System book, and is sure to be of interest for enthusiasts of this new system as well as members of the card collector community." - Drag City.

Title: Songs From The Source
Format: CD
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $13.50
"Songs From The Source is a lost-and-found 1973 recording of The Source family. These twelve songs were recorded live in the Hollywood Hills as a rehearsal for a concert date that Spirit of 76 -- aka YaHoWaH 13, The Savage Sons of YaHoWa, Yodship, and FireWaterAir, now known as Children of the Sixth Root Race -- had at the Whisky. A 1/4" tape copy of the recording was found in Chicago in 2006, though no one is really sure how it got there. Djin Aquarian, rhythm guitarist and songwriter for Spirit of 76, recalls being sent on a mission to Chicago later in 1973, where he believes he left the tape with an old friend. Djin wrote most of the songs in the year before he joined with The Source, as part of his solo mystical quest to help enlighten the world before it might annihilate itself, adding, Im glad both the album and the world are still here. Though this rehearsal wasnt meant to be released at the time, there are probably no other recordings as complete of the band doing these songs. The Spirit of 76 had a different sound than the one YaHoWaH 13 made with Yahowa. Songs From The Source has more rnb-grooved energy, with splashes of synth and organ, a female vocal chorus and streamlined fusion rhythms backing the uniquely Yahowan lyrical populism of songs like Godmen and Lost Dead But Hoping. The ebullient, ever-climbing power of the climactic We Are the Dinosaurs, has few analogues in the other Source recordings and is furthermore an outstanding piece of music from the entire era. Songs From The Source is a miraculous missing piece of The Sources positive musical movement. The members of YaHoWaH 13 (Djin, Sunflower on bass, Octavius on drums) were joined by family members Ahom, Aquariana, Cinderella, Rhythm, Vibration, and Zoroaster on lead guitar, to create the ecstatic sound of Spirit of 76. In summing up, Djin told us, I know Father is behind this redeeming of the Spirit of 76 album and up to his old tricks again... Yahowha." -Drag City

Thats right, over the course of just two sides of pure 7" vinyl, youre gonna get a ringing earful of what made American kids thrive way back then. Very little is known about CoC. Title: Artist Proof
Format: LP + CD
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $22.00
"LP version with debossed jacket and printed innersleeve. Includes a CD of the full album, plus five bonus tracks. Already a veteran of several bands and scenes on the L.A. landscape, Chris was a founding member of the west coast Kaleidoscope. He went his own way after the recording of their second album, A Beacon from Mars, to pursue music on his own terms. Artist Proof, Chriss solo debut, is a rich and powerful dose of California country rock, written almost entirely by Chris and played with grit and precision by a cast of great players (whose resumes are too lengthy to include here, but pretty much all of them began with this record -- Chris had an ear for good young talent!) including Ed Black, Loren Newkirk, Arnie Moore, Mickey McGee, and John Ware. The turn of the west-coast rock scene toward country music was something no one man could create on his own -- Chris himself has been quoted as saying that the country-rock sound was created by bands, not individuals. This seems right; a coming together of young people testing out their formative influences in the light of a new day, creating something different in the process. The fresh feeling of Artist Proof is an evidence of this -- proof positive, in fact! Back in print for the first time in 40 years and finally ushered into the digital realm.. CD includes five bonus tracks." -Drag City.

Title: For The Whole World To See
Format: CD
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $14.00
"Their time in the studio was overseen by engineer Jim Vitti, whose work with Parliament/ Funkadelic seems to have informed his decision to record Death in raw fashion with little polish, showcasing the organic power relationships within the trio. The songs recorded there make up ?For the Whole World to See, which today blasts from the speakers as a fresh and inspired early entry in the category of punk rock. Death had a single pressed, Politicians In My Eyes b/w Keep On Knocking, selling them at their shows and on the street. Things werent really going anywhere when they heard from Columbia Records president Clive Davis. He was interested, but he had one demand -- theyd have to change their name. David, acting as the bands leader, would have no part of it, a decision that ultimately brought an end to Death. Moving to New England, David, Bobby and Dannis reconnected with their faith, forming the Christian rock-n-roll band The 4th Movement, whose self-released early-80s album joined Deaths 45 as a sought-after obscurity for the next generation. 2009 is the time that Death is finally here ...For The Whole World to See. ...For The Whole World to See is the first full-length release EVER for the band called Death -- with only one 7" single to their name, and that usually goes for about a grand per. Thats $1000! For those who do have the single, the remastered sound here will break you up." -Drag City.

"Death III is coming! In advance of the release of EVEN MORE previously unreleased recordings from the vaults of DEATH, the two songs here represent the album in showcasing two different eras following For The Whole World to See. "North Street" was recorded in 1980, as Death was transitioning into their next incarnation as The Fourth Movement. The song was part of a studio session in their new home base in Vermont, capturing the HACKNEY Brothers full-bodied sound with the same fidelity of their 1975 recordings that made up For the Whole World to See. The B-side is a special song that represents some of the last music David Hackney ever recorded." - Drag City.

Repressed. "Spiritual-Mental-Physical is a collection of wild early DEATH demos, presenting the three young HACKNEY brothers consolidating their powers as they embark on a trip into pure rock and roll music. For many years following the emergence of punk rock, nothing changed. Punk bands either signed contracts and played the rock band game or they lived in a world parallel to the world of commercial rock and roll. Farther along came "the year that punk broke," a puzzling decade and a half after the whole thing had first been absorbed into the mainstream in the last of the 1970s. And so it was. The books were written; the pronouncements made. Then came news of Death. Theyd self-released a single in 1976; the tracks made it onto an unheard punk compilation a couple decades later. In 2008, an obsessive young man tracked them down and found that the surviving two brothers had master tapes from all those years ago. These made up the truly senses-shattering album...For The Whole World To See. Suddenly, the book was open again and the history of punk rock needed to be rewritten to include Death. The sounds on ...For the Whole World To See are those of young men, scorching their influences in the process of becoming new. Spiritual-Mental-Physical gives us Death by transistor radio, with a tinnyyet- furious sound representing the 1970s environment of Death. Here, the musical landscape that inspired them is more clearly defined as they demo material that didnt make it to the studio, but shares the same ferocious bent as "Politicians In My Eyes," "Keep On Knocking," and the rest of ...For the Whole World To See. Spiritual-Mental-Physical is an inside look at Deaths early days, one that fans of the group and fans of punk rock (and, indeed, rock of all kinds) are sure to enjoy for the rest of time." -Drag City.

Title: Nodal Excitation
Format: LP
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $22.00
"By the late 80s most of the burgeoning minimal underground had been forgotten, especially one amazing character, Arnold Dreyblatt. Dreyblatt only had one record, Nodal Excitation (on the mostly post-AACM jazz label India Navigation), before he packed and moved to Berlin, where he concentrated on his other activities, making only two more records over the next 10 years. But for those who caught the action, Arnold was the man. He was more rock that any of the others combined, and he was also the only one to really tap into that massive proto-minimal sound that Conrad had squelched out of his tin-contact mic violin in the early 60s. Indeed, in the early 70s after being in school in Buffalo, where Conrad taught, Dreyblatt moved into Manhattan to work for Young, where he witnessed first-hand, and listened first-ear to those legendary recordings of the Theatre of Eternal Music. He got interested in long string sounds, and bought a bass that he wired with piano wire. By hitting the strings instead of bowing them, Dreyblatt was able to get those ringing overtones, but he also had added something new: pure rhythm. Dreyblatt couldnt get the rock singles hed grown up with out of him, and couldnt become the full-on new-music man that seemed to be a requirement in the 70s, and it wasnt until the 80s that the fence could be straddled, if not knocked over. It was time to start a band. In 1998, dexters cigar were on the scene, excavating the valuable stuff from that semi-recent past for Nodal Excitations first-ever appearance on CD. It brought it into a lot of new ears -- but times have changed and so have the ears. So what you have here is the first ever LP reissue of Arnold Dreyblatts freshman record, a slice of minimal history that is STILL as potent now, if not more, as it was in 98 and 81 before it. It was a lighthouse that was aiming the wrong way when the tugboat came by, but now its shining right in your face." - Drag City.

"DWARR is DUANE WARR. Dwarr put out the suicidal, droned out, and brilliant debut Starting Over in 1984, followed by Animals in 1986, Holy One in 2000, and Times of Terror in 2003. Dwarrs masterpiece Animals tells tales of rage, obsession and vengeance. Duane worked at a plastic factory in South Carolina. Criticism of Starting Over sent him into a paralyzing depression. He decided to appease the people by making a country record. Folks were entertained but it did nothing for Duane. He planned his revenge and decided to make a Dwarr record for himself and no one else. He gave everything he had to Animals. He recorded on a Tascam 8-track in his trailer and played everything but the drums himself. There was no dubbing; all the tracks had to be played straight through. He could nail it and miss the last note and have to start all over again. The making of Animals was a supernatural, spiritual experience that came at a dark point in Duane Warrs life. Visions and hauntings took place during the making of the record. The lyrics are heavy and breathy and the guitar riffs are doom laden, brutal and heavy as hell. Dwarr created an impenetrably slow and heavy sludge of a record that promises to bludgeon you into a dark yet willing oblivion. There is nothing else like Animals." - Drag City.

"Posterity is a word that simply means "all future generations." Only sex, money, and power are stronger driving forces behind human creativity, and posterity is the thing that motivated DUANE WARR to create his first album, Starting Over, in 1984. What makes a person in their 20s concerned about posterity? Hard living, a sense of mortality, the fear of dying before having done something worth a damn. And Duane Warr lived hard, oh yes. So what did he leave for posterity? A spectacular vision of the apocalypse-of starting over from zero. A vision of terror and suffering but also, perhaps, one of hope. (Warr would be born again nine years later.) Following on the heels of last years acclaimed reissue of Dwarrs hard rock masterpiece Animals, Drag City and Yoga Records proudly present Duane Warrs first testament, a home-recorded rock-metal-blues shredder unlike anything else, a true outlier from the heart of the conformist 80s. Title: III
Format: LP
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $19.00
"Picking up the threads with ease, Espers III was intended to be an aural reversal of the layered sound of II. The goal was to record fewer tracks in order to achieve a stronger, more oxygenated sonic presence. Where II was almost claustrophobic in its density and darkness, III was envisaged as being somehow lighter, effervescent; perhaps even of a cheery disposition at times (whoa there! Dont go not breaking our heart, Espers). Under these auspices, recording started in late 2008 and spilled into the spring and summer of 2009. As more time passed in the recording process, a growing dementia within both song and lyrics emerged, making even the most ethereal songs on III seem oddly unwholesome to all involved. As with past releases (both by Espers and significant others), III was recorded with the vinyl LP in mind, playing as a whole divided into two equally weighted sides. Recorded to analog tape and mixed to analog tape again at the end, the songs ended up in a stippled, rippling, ever-flowing space, another important factor in the realization of III. Space is a core concept here -- each of these songs in some way access new space, whether they are envisioning, locating, or claiming and colonizing it. In fact, IIIs working title was Colony, owing to a subtextual thought process that encompassed aspects of Herzogs Aguirre, Heart of Darkness, cult groups, deep Amazonian treks, religious nation building, ritualistic drug ceremonies (taking drugs to take canoe trips to take drugs on) -- eg., escape from assimilation, surviving cultural wars by embedding themselves in the wilderness, among friends and fellow travelers. The cover aesthetic and Xavier Schipanis arresting artwork mirror these themes and Espers desire to reach beyond what might be expected of an Espers album with metaphoric imagery and increased dimensionality -- not just a new Espers album, but indeed, a new Espers." - Drag City.

Title: Overloaded Ark
Format: Double LP
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $21.00
"Further along the path of musical friendship that Helena Espvall and Masaki Batoh have discovered for themselves, we find Overloaded Ark ready to sail. And indeed, a new and better society might be provided for with all that theyve packed on board. These are end times, we are told. Often, though, the craft of Espvall & Batoh drifts through placid waters. In the distance, thunderheads raise up and lightning flashes. When the storms finally come raging, they blow through -- and, singular in purpose under skies of shifting color, the intrepid ark sails onward. Espvall & Batoh have come prepared for anything, armed with acoustic and electric guitars, cello, renaissance harp, organ, sho, banjo, electronics, recorders, piano, hurdy gurdy, frame drums and several more obscure instruments such as auschpfeife, crumhorn, cornamuse, darbuka, and rig. Listen for them! But look them up first, so you know what youre listening for. There are vocals as well, sung mostly by Helena but also with Batohs empathetic support. They are backed by two of Batohs Ghost-mates, Kazuo Ogino and Junzo Tateiwa, and joined by ancient music specialist Haruo Kondo. As on the first Espvall & Batoh album, Overloaded Ark features a trove of traditional and ancient music alongside self-composed explorations. Songs from many cultures and ages are in evidence, from Scandinavian folk to German madrigal to French and Italian medieval court dances and even a good old Latin hymn! Nearer our present day, Sueno Con Serpientes is a cautionary tale from the legendary Cuban protest singer Silvio Rodriguez, and Sham No Umi is a Batoh solo piece from the mid-90s. Espvall & Batoh endeavor to combine sounds from different times in history with an eye towards the creation of a peaceful new global village in the world of today. And indeed, Overloaded Ark is a gentle and expansive trip, fusing the sounds of east and west, new world and old into a new epic for all nations. Charted with grace and skill, Overloaded Ark is a human record, its passions focused under a stoic, enduring exterior." -Drag City

Artist: EUBANK, JEFF
Title: A Street Called Straight
Format: LP
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $16.00
"Welcome to A Street Called Straight, where the sounds echo from a time so long ago...well, it was like another lifetime ago. The street on which JEFF EUBANK lived was already slipping away when this album was released in 1983. Those golden-hued "good vibes" from the 60s and 70s seemed much more finite in the early days of the 1980s, encroached upon by the creeping darkness of changing times. A Street Called Straight was a  cry into the darkness-man can live and flourish. A Street Called Straight is a beautiful slice of second-wave album oriented rock, unfolding a series of peaceful, easy feelings, articulated with carefully crafted music and lyrics. How is it that a landlocked creature could come up with such beachy sounds, such cheerfully extraterrestrial visions? Jeff Eubank channeled the sunshine and moonlight of southern California via Kansas City, Missouri. Hed been playing music since the mid-70s and had finally gone out to LA and played music there before returning to lay his songs down in familiar lower-midwestern stomping grounds where studio rates were cheaper. You hear what you hear in the music. Some of the names that listeners have been so far reminded of include Fred Neil, Al Stewart, David Crosby, Kenny Rankin and a fellow traveler of the early 80s private press highway, Bobb Trimble. No Export to Europe." -Drag City

Title: The Source Family
Format: DVD
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $16.00
"Awareness of The Source Family, YaHoWa13 and Father Yod has been growing since their early 1970s heyday. A spiritual commune dedicated to a wide-ranging blend of eastern and western mysticism, The Source Family were very much a part of the infamous era of tuning in, turning on and dropping out in the late 1960s and 70s. The Source Familys celebrity-hang-out vegetarian restaurant, rock band, utopian commune, and beautiful women made them darlings of Hollywoods Sunset Strip; but their outsider ideals and controversial spiritual leader Father Yod provoked local authorities, leading to their dramatic demise. Still, Yods spirit lives on -- in the hearts and souls of Family members, and in the music that he and the familys various bands made during his life, much of which remains in circulation. Additionally, new finds from the many hours of tapes they left behind are released every year. This incredible true story -- told largely through home movies and photographs maintained by archivist Isis Aquarian, one of Father Yods fourteen wives, features a soundtrack comprised entirely of original Source Family music. The Source Family provides an unparalleled insiders view into the cult/commune phenomenon and wild social experimentation of the 70s; a penetrating and bittersweet examination of the joys of the free love generation and the contradictions that lay beneath the surface of their peaceful, easy feelings. In this, it is a uniquely Californian story as well." NTSC format.; 99 minutes; aspect ratio: 16:9." - Drag City.

Title: The Source Family Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
Format: LP
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $19.00
"For at least the last couple decades, the cult around The Source Family cult has enjoyed the music of Ya Ho Wa 13, whose nine albums with Father were a major part of the story. Recorded during an eleven-month span during 1973 and 74, pressed on their own Higher Key label and sold in The Source Restaurant for $10 a piece at that time, these recordings continue to fascinate listeners to this day, and have been reprinted multiple times, including a massive box-set version of the whole catalog made in Japan in the mid-1990s. In 2007, the release of Isis Aquarians book The Source: The Untold Story of Father Yod, Ya Ho Wa 13 and The Source Family, opened the doors on the mysterious and influential doings of The Source Family -- and now the Spring of 2013 sees a definitive documentary film on the subject, entitled The Source Family. For the soundtrack to The Source Family documentary, a selection of material was chosen to include the widest variety of Source Family members, showcasing the talents of many not previously showcased. And so, in addition to Ya Ho Wa 13 members Djin, Sunflower and Octavius, we also hear the contributions of Cinderella, Ahom, Aquariana, Anastasia, Rhythm, Horn, Electron, Zoroaster, Vibration, Pythias, Damian, and Zinaru -- as well as the omnipotent Yahowa himself, Father Yod. Their music ranges from soulful to spiritual to shamanistic, with Father fronting the band on journeys through inner and outer psychosis and bliss. These recordings were intended to further the teachings of Yahowa, and while they certainly do so, what the listener is left with some forty years on, aside from a deeply compelling curiosity, is..." -Drag City.

Title: The Thought Adjusters - Source Family Jams Circa 1973-1974
Format: Double LP
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $22.00
"Man, our minds were blown by that God and Hair box. When we were given a chance to work with some of the folks from The Source back in 2008, we just said yeah, lets hear more of that craaazy music. First came the never-before-heard tape from Children of the Sixth Root Race, Songs From the Source. Then, Magnificence in the Memory, a vault-diving expedition by NNCKs Dave Nuss credited to Father Yod and the Source Family. Now in the year 2012, rare energies are at play, and the times are calling for another trip into the deep pile of Source Family song-and-dance music. With The Thought Adjusters, the focus is on extended rhythms created not only by YaHoWha13 but all the family musicians. The focus is on extended rhythms created in support of Father as he made his teachings, with all the jams integrating both aspects; music and wisdom. Musicians on this record include Pythias, Sunflower, Djin, Octavius, Rhythm, Vibration and Zoraster, with backing vocals from Ahom, Aquariana, Cinderella and Anastasia. Truly, a family vibe can be felt in the recordings here, as impromptu teachings from Father are augmented by improvised riffs which blossom into lengthy mindand- soul-excursions, heavy with communal rock and blistering thoughts from the band and Father. After a brief opening sounding of ritual bells, these four sides are filled to the max with five monolithic jams meant to open your head -- which was the goal of everyday life with The Source Family. Notes explaining the physical and philosophical paths of Father Yod are written by Source Family member, scribe and archivist Isis Aquarian, whose collection contains even more photographs and tapes than are included in this package. With a documentary film on The Source Family making the rounds on the festival circuit this year, we anticipate greater desire for revelation -- not just on Fathers whens and wheres and his thirteen wives, but also the beliefs of The Source Family, and how it relates to the rising up of man in the very near future." Title: Kohoutek
Format: LP
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $23.00
"....the second coming of Kohoutek. This was the first spontaneous release that was made into a record, credited to Father Yod and The Spirit of 76. It came out in 1973, the year of Kohoutek, when the imminent arrival of the big comet spawned a new round of cosmic consciousness in the media and with people all over the planet. This was more than a comet, its radiance was enormous, it came from ancient times to be experienced again by the enlightened people of the day. The Source Family were alive with expectation about the return of this long-haired messenger, and Father devoted considerable time chanting and eventually changing in his identity to Yahowa while meditating on the comet. Events like these were to be cherished for bringing infusions of energy that could only be accessed via the rare occasions. Life had to be lived in order to grow -- and the two sides of Kohoutek are a special jam that passes through tranquility to exultation, a tapping of the passing flame in the skies and a greeting from Father to the messenger and bearer of such awesome gifts. Very pure. After the original LP pressing in 1973, Kohoutek was issued on CD for the first time as a part of the God and Hair boxset in 1996; this is the first time the vinyl has been available again since the 1970s. Features all of the original artwork, including an insert about the comet, plus new inserts with reflections from Isis. These emanations from the original Source are pure, uncut spiritual visions from the mid-1970s, not to be missed." - Drag City.

Title: Go to a Party
Format: 7"
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $6.50
"Drag City resurrects the fantastic  sound of THE FEMS. To do so, they had to  travel back to the year 1982, when this  single was pressed in some insignificant amount by the band  and spread around the country, one copy at a time. The Fems  represented early American hardcore punk at a time when  speed wasnt necessary in order to punk out and the intersection of angst and humor was a common crossroads for aspirant  songwriters. Hence, the barbed humor of "Go To A Party" and  "Is It Living?," alongside the primal screaming of "Order." The  Fems were a legend in their hometown of Buffalo, presiding  over energy-charged crowds with loads of sarcastic banter and  making themselves a party favorite in the wide-open early 80s.  Their 7-inch EP Go To A Party was recorded with the vocals,  drums and bass closest to the mic and the guitar somewhere in  the next room-but the low, rumbling sound that resulted is a  unique vision from early punk days. For frustrated collectors, its a must-have-but not too many copies have been pressed,  as part of our effort to duplicate the original release in every  way." - Drag City.

Price: $18.00
"Drag City presents reissues of the avant-garde DIY label Groovy founded by PETE SHELLEY (BUZZCOCKS) and FRANCIS COOKSON. FREE AGENTS was the first of the lot, with an album named after its price, 3.33. Cookson took live performance tapes from a TILLER BOYS show (a conceptual band featuring himself, ERIC RANDOM, and, when available, Shelley) and added some additional recordings using tape loops, feedback and anything else he could get on there. It ranged around from post -"Revolution 9" collage to wack beats that one might associate with the emergent krautrock to stark industrial moments, flowing into each other with an organic, freely improvised quality. Packaged in 12" sleeves with photocopies of Cookson scribbles pasted on the front and back, Free Agents was DIY all the way." -Drag City.

Title: 38:38
Format: LP
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $16.00
"38:38 is the lone release of THE GEORGE-EDWARDS GROUP, an autumnal alien soundtrack that, over thirty years after being recorded (but not really released) defies time and categorization. If youve never heard of it before, that just means its rare, right? This makes  38:38 one of the rarest private press albums of all time. 38:38 departs from the norm of the genre: instead of a low-fi demo-quality outing elevated mainly by dealer hype, its a haunting piece of music that offers an unusually highbrow take on the archetypal Midwestern rocknroll existentialism usually addressed with a solid beat and sneering vocal. Crafting their sound out of the many influences of the day, EDWARD BALIAN and RAY GEORGE created pop music with acoustic guitars and harmonies, heavily-reverberant piano riffs, cold sheets of synthesizer, bells and chimes. Operating amidst the factory-charred grime of late 1960s Detroit, Balian and Georges first group was the garage-rock obscurity ANDROMEDA, regularly sharing bills with local heroes like The Frost, Rationals, and Amboy Dukes. Unlike these groups, Balian and George spiked their guitar blowouts with incongruous sound-on-sound experiments whose strangeness recalled lounge/exotica records of the 1950s. Too heady for the Motor City hard rock scene, they gradually lost interest in the restriction of playing all-covers gigs and turned to the basement, powered with multi-track tape recorders, processors and Moog synthesizers, flanging and phasing heavily with space effects and backwards loops, leaving a fair share of destroyed microphones and tape machines in their experimental wake." - Drag City.

Title: Overture
Format: CD/DVD
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $17.50
"At sunset on the night of October 9th, 2006, a crowd gathered at Nippon Yusen Soko, a converted warehouse space located on Yokahama Bay. Their purpose: to see and hear new music played by Ghost. Once they had completely arrived, the doors were shut and locked and the announcement made: no one would enter or exit the space until the performance was complete. Starting in complete darkness, the performance was spun, like yarn from a cocoon. The set for this evening was not just new to the audience. For this event, Ghost played entirely improvised material. Improvisation is the wellspring of creation for Ghost, both live and in the studio, though theyve never made an entire album of improvisations until now. In order to not miss a single inspiration, Ghost brought their orchestras-worth of instrumentation, playing bass, drums, piano, electric and acoustic guitars, saxophones, flute, tin-whistle, bells, frame drums, lute, tabla-baya, waterphone and even tapes! The performance space was chosen for its sonic qualities such as natural reverb as well as its resemblance to Potala Palace in Lhasa -- an ancient meditation retreat. Band members were spaced apart to prevent eye contact and allow distance for the reverberations to unfold between them -- which in turn, were recorded by four microphones spaced distantly from the band and faced toward the walls, in order to catch the sound in the room with the audience present as well as the echo of that sound. The CD performance is an edited version of the evenings events -- but the DVD is a completely live, four-camera view into the collective journey of Ghost and their audience. In addition to the sounds and sights of the band in action, the viewer will also experience the atmospheres created by Overheads, whose far-ranging light works (and subtle placement of a lace curtain) enhanced the mood within Nippon Yusen Soko that night." "It seemed as if Ghost had been in the studio for a million years. It turned out to be only six months in our time. But with the flood of material recorded in their recent extended studio sessions, it was possible to think in terms of releasing not one, but two Ghost LPs, all at once. With Snuffbox Immanence set as the next official release, Tune In... was hastily added to the schedule. Included in the liner notes is a message from the Liason Office of his Holiness the Dalai Lama, detailing the struggles of the nation of Tibet in their ongoing bid for independence from China. Ghost add to this protest a series of dense, somber, acoustic compositions. Each of these songs turns a new page in the eternal book of Ghost. An atmosphere of morning pervades, as Ghost gives their undying respect to the nonviolent resistance of the people of Tibet" - Drag City. 1999 release, repressed on vinyl. "Public Works is a collection of 17 satirical essays and short stories by Neil Hagerty. It brings together for the first time all of Hagerys short pieces which appeared in magazines and journals during his travels through the past ten years. Collected and revised, they form a newly realized endeavor which embraces a broad set of concerns: the starkly pallid Travel Diary abets an elegy for the humor magazine CAR-toons, a short story set in the nexus of boxing and right-wing activism appends a conversation with the ghost of Al Jolson. We visit dark, dusty border towns and encounter the world within a dirty mattress. Such a classic literary genres as the western and the detective story are revisited through characters who are the compelling, ironic and humorous people we meet every day, as well as a few whom we pass without notice. Baked beans are also discussed." - Drag City.

"The Howling Hex return with Section 2 in the limited edition developmental series launched in conjunction with Drag City. Superimposed over this network of connections two linear timestreams cross at the midpoint of Section 2. One flows forward and dissolves concrete memory into distant, lazy elegy. The other flows backward as in an anxiety attack, vague sensations of terror become central and vivid and the mechanics of nostalgia dissect the embrace by seducing memory to fixate on a moment before the benighted opposition attained solidity. The Section 2 vinyl-only format physically represents a point of differentiation that may be examined repeatedly while remaining free from the vagaries of human memory." - Drag City. Title: First of Dismay
Format: LP
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $22.00
"A somber work from a seasoned entertainer clearly carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders, First of Dismay is being issued in answer to many who have applauded for more! more! Specially-chosen stand-up comedy recordings from Neils recent appearances at coveted nightclubs in London, Savannah, and Los Angeles are interspersed with musical cries for help, as Neil emotes with the purely professional panache of the Too Good For Neil Hamburger Band in support. Song highlights include Endless Roll, a disco complaint letter aimed at Kirkland Signature trash bags (featuring guest spots from members of The Germs and Jefferson Starship!!), and Nickel Candy: societal decline set to music. Although Neil was strongly advised against the risk of merging side-splitting comedy segments with melancholy musical numbers, the exciting potpourri that resulted has enhanced his sparkle into a veritable milky way of entertainment." - Drag City.

Title: A Dream A While Back
Format: LP
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $13.00
"GARY HIGGINS is back from the time-space continuum with previously unheard moments from his storied past. Way back in 2005, Drag City reintroduced his 1974 psych-folk classic Red Hash to listeners around the world, who were acutely touched by Garys carefully-arranged, darkly utopian songs. Since then, Red Hash has been widely recognized as a classic of its time. Since then, Gary has played shows around the U.S., something that he was unable to do in the mid-70s when Red Hash came out, due to incarceration on trumped-up drug possession charges. It was a good feeling, playing his songs for people who were moved by them, so Gary decided to record some new ones, and in 2009,his first new recordings in over thirty years were issued as the album Seconds. His sound was neither revisited nor updated; natural evolution had occurred and the songs were unmistakably Gary Higgins; older, and different, yet unchanged. Fresh from his trip to the present, Gary is back in the past for this EP of songs, all of which were written and recorded circa 70-71, in the same time that the songs that would form Red Hash took shape." -Drag City

First reissue of this underground folk-psych classic, originally released in 1973 as a self-released LP. " Red Hash features eleven haunting tracks of folk-pop played on acoustic and electric guitar and arranged with percussion, cello, flute, piano, organ, bass and mandolin. This plus Garys transcendent vocals bring to mind the perfectly-damaged vibes found in David Crosbys masterpiece of peace, love and paranoia, If I Could Only Remember My Name and the recently re-discovered and acclaimed Parallelograms by Linda Perhacs. This is the first-ever authorized reissue of Red Hash -- direct from the original master tapes. The Red Hash CD includes two unheard bonus cuts and never before seen artwork/photos. Red Hash is held in very high regard by current torch-bearers/taste-makers: Animal Collective, Joanna Newsom, WFMU, Devendra Banhart, Ben Chasny, Sunburned Hand of the Man, White Magic, and Espers." - Drag City.

"1973: Connecticut native Gary Higgins and his friends record Red Hash and release it on Garys own Nufusmoon Records. Following the release, legal issues halt all promotion and sales, rendering the small pressing of Red Hash a hotly-rumored and much sought-after lost album of rock and roll lore. 2005: Drag City is honored to present the first-ever authorized reissue of Gary Higgins acid-folk gem Red Hash -- mastered from the original master tapes with two previously unheard bonus tracks. The reviews are glowing: the haunting sound of Garys meticulously arranged folk-pop is a sound that everyone can relate to, and Red Hash makes many year-end lists around the world as Top Reissue. 2007: What do you mean, we forgot to make a vinyl version of Red Hash in 2005? Really? Well, lets not wait another minute, we might forget again... And so, after thirty-five years, Red Hash vinyl is back in stock, with a limited-edition LP that includes a 7" single featuring the first-ever vinyl pressing of the CD bonus songs Dont Ya Know and Last Great Sperm Whale. This is your chance to grab at a letter-perfect reproduction of a folk-rock classic from the early 1970s. Dont space it -- score yourself a copy of Red Hash."-Drag City

"Deeply grooved and stomping, alive with a triple-headed vocal attack, aloft on clouds of reverb, All-Night Fox can be heard in a variety of tongues. As in so much of life, meaning comes after the moment of impact. This is built into the design. The songs on All-Night Fox are free from structural cliché -- verse, chorus and solo have been incorporated into a stream that runs through the entire album. Additionally, the generic designations rhythm and blues and rock and roll are surpassed. The Howling Hex play their music beyond genre, with the reality of rhythm and blues inherent in the music, regardless of whether or not it is exploited for their image. Title: Best of the Howling Hex
Format: LP
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $19.00
"THE HOWLING HEX are back in town-you can feel them in the air, man! The Best of The Howling Hex is a new album of new music by a new incarnation of The Howling Hex, now broadcasting as a band from the big town of Denver, Colorado. After years staked out in the border country of southern New Mexico, guitarist and leader NEIL HAGERTY is back in the phonebook, giving The Hex an urban soapbox on which to stand for the first time in their ten years of re-re-revisionist history. Mile high style seems to be a good match for the mercurial back-road attire of The Howling Hex. For this new album, the wide-opens spaces and New Border rhythms of recent albums have been telescoped and accelerated into a high-stepping, uptempo night on the tiles. Kicking the beat with New Border funk is a rhythm section complete with drummer, last heard on a Howling Hex record back in 2007. Also redux is the functionality of the "ditty"-most recently experienced on Earth Junk. The Best of The Howling Hex includes seven shortish songs that weave the wild spirits and far-flung textures of Wilson Semiconductors into tightly compressed sing-songs, before turning the jam out to bring the levee home. Hagertys guitar tone is an alien wonder, and the careening beat of the band unleashes him to fill solo spots with fervor." -Drag City.

"Come back to the world of the all-new, all-different Howling Hex, the planet of Earth Junk. Three targets are routinely sighted during the genesis of new music in The Howling Hexs free-ranging New Border Sound: observation and incorporation of space/time around the band in the period preceding the recording of the album (aka, the writing process); a consideration of the nature of the worldwide audience of The Howling Hex, whoever they may be (i.e., the marketing meeting); and additionally, the consideration of equally unpredictable future listeners (with nominal input from Drag City account executives). Each time around, this method elicits new sounds from The Howling Hex in a divergent, entirely refreshing manner. What does that make Earth Junk? Take a guess. If you figured on an electric country-pop hoedown for small ensemble (featuring circus organ), as minimal and repetitive as all rock and roll, youd be getting somewhere. If youre concerned it might create a bit of curiosity or perplexity, youre on the right track. The Howling Hex are convinced that as musical entertainers, they owe the audience (an audience? Any audience!) something of value for their money. Emblematic identity and presentation doesnt fall under their umbrella of worthwhile experiences -- and furthermore, what seems dire and spacious can also be sly and hellacious. With The Howling Hex, youre free to get up or get down, and know theres room for one more -- and another beyond it. As test listeners, we concur. Recorded in Austin in the late winter of early 2008, Earth Junk is a ramble in the dappled sunlight of the American southwest, twisted metallic folk-art in the ever-changing breeze, an offering to all nations. Throw Earth Junk in your sound-trunk and keep on rolling. The Howling Hex will be there to greet you whenever -- and wherever - you arrive." - Drag City

Format: CD

Price: $13.50
"Existing simultaneously below the crust of the earths war-torn culture and on the main street of consumer America, The Howling Hex spend their time pushing their trademark New Border Sound to the bold, the curious, and the jaded alike, crafting sonic pleasures for all needs. Albums such as All Night Fox and 1-2-3 have explored frontier sounds and sampled local cultures while brewing an unmistakable essence of rock and roll as never heard before. The A-V approach of You Cant Beat Tomorrow caught these two Americas in the frame as The Howling Hex jammed their unmistakable sound. Now come seven new songs that take it higher. Nightclub Version Of the Eternal builds, builds and builds in the manner of The Howling Hex live shows seen across America funking on and on with a collective abandon, while dispensing information with g-g-generous style." - Drag City.

Title: Victory Chimp, A Book
Format: 4 CD Box Set
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $29.00
"In 1997, Drag City published Victory Chimp, a paperback book. This had been committed to text by Neil Hagerty from memories, wire photos, sheet music, cobol computer printouts and his own typewritten notes circa 1980-88. The story had to be told, but in 97 the long-form radio show was not quite the fashion and we certainly werent thinking about the coming onslaught of media mash-ups that would develop in our new millennium collage culture. But now, in 2011, Victory Chimp returns as an audio book. Not just any audio book, but a nextlevel audio book, which is only fitting given Victory Chimps once-and-future status as an out-level sci-fi paperback. The concept of reading with your ears is surely a nonsequitur that fits the logic of Victory Chimp, where sound is used not simply to create atmosphere, but to pace and forward the narrative. Its not quite the total work of art imagined by Wagner before he soundtracked the Holocaust, but VC pictures fascism as well, albeit from a radically different angle. And so we make the comparison. Not many things compare to Victory Chimp when it comes to form, largely due to its elusive play with it. Even Dos Passos caught shit for skewing structure once upon a time." - Drag City.

"THE HOWLING HEX, Wilson Semiconductors: one guitar, four songs, a multitrack recording unit. Out of the desert and into the mountains, The Howling Hex are at large once again, upping the ante by lowering the body count this time around. Recorded and mastered at Sonic Ranch in the tiny township of Tornillo, a border town in El Paso County, Wilson Semiconductors is a pure strain of The Howling Hex-a Hex of one, one NEIL MICHAEL HAGERTY, who did everything on the record after the writing, which was shared in spots with longtime Hex-mate MIKE SIGNS. Alone at the wheel dont necessarily want for company though-with time and space on his hands, Hagerty rolls out elegant norteo bass lines and then vocals and guitars that mesh like homemade gears with the beat. Despite the unbending pace, something seems to be melting as if the merry-go-round done broke down-but thats just the sound of you hearing the music, a common by-product of The Howling Hex listening experience." -Drag City.

"Off in the distance, the sounds of cities and towns groan, rumble and heave. It might be bustling industry or some strange storm that stuck around so long that inhabitants forgot it was ever supposed to leave. In some places, it is rumored that sirens are forgotten altogether. Can you imagine? OMG! With this in mind, The Howling Hex congregated. A tour had been booked and there was work to do. Working collaboratively with each other, the band descended upon each city in turn. Nightly, they gathered with the citizens and took note. Wherever The Howling Hex went, they heard the sirens - howling, screaming, soothing. They put them in the grooves of their new songs. Writing songs on the road and playing them, night after night, led them and us to this moment-defining statement: XI. This unnameable thing we know as rock is matched on XI with sharp-eyed lyricism and a multiplicity of vocal approaches." - Drag City.

Title: Cosmic Lightning
Format: LP + DVD

Price: $21.00
"Like a bolt from the black, Cosmic Lightning has struck again -- but who felt the shock the first time around? The sounds of J.T. IV were too much for 1980s Chicago. Now they can be truly absorbed, 20 years after they first flashed. Rock and roll often grows out of harsh circumstances. John Timmis IV survived a broken childhood and a nightmarish adolescence, ending up homeless and hustling on the streets after being committed to a mental hospital by his mother in the mid-70s. At New Trier High School on Chicagos North Shore, he obsessed over the Velvets and David Bowie and taught himself how to play guitar. Two years later, he recorded his first 45, Waiting for the C.T.A. backed with Song For Suzanne and Death Trip. Then came In The Can (written during his institutional stay), which was included on the B-side of his second single, Destructo Rock. These singles were pressed in runs of a hundred or two -- and there are only two known extant copies of the first release. Both were recorded at Odyssey Studio on Michigan Avenue and released on J.T.s Rock And Roll Records imprint. John did his best to publicize his work, giving away copies of Destructo Rock all around town. During the 90s, rare sightings were reported at record stores, and rumors persist that a few 45s can still be found in jukeboxes in Europe. Sadly, Johns talents didnt include selling his records, and the copies he gave away havent survived in any great numbers. After an odd absence in which he claimed to have been horribly disfigured in a car accident, John rebounded in 1987, and released his last single under the name Frankenstein. The Cosmic Lightning album was compiled from his singles discography. Additionally, he produced and directed the 85-hour film (longest film in history, according to the Guinness Book of World Records) entitled The Cure For Insomnia, which played once at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He finished a memoir entitled From The Inside, framing his life story inside a narrative of his time incarcerated at the Menninger Clinic. In 1988 he moved to Ohio, never to be heard from again. He died in 2002 after a long struggle with drugs and alcohol. Though his music was energized by the punk and glam movements, John was beyond style, feverishly (and unknowingly) meshing punk and classic rock sounds with dark psychedelic touches. He performed live only three times, at events that were almost make-believe concerts, showcasing his appeal in serendipitous fashion. The spirit of J.T. IV was a unique and damaged thing. He was a legend in his own mind, a mind that opened several times in his lifetime with thrilling results. His 1977 sophomore yearbook photo from New Trier graces the cover of Cosmic Lightning, as close to an official portrait as he ever came. This is whats left of J.T. IV -- and it rocks." -Drag City. Title: Andy and His Grandmother
Format: CD
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $14.00
"Andy Kaufman changed the worlds of comedy and performance in the 1970s, showing fans and friends alike a determination to follow put-ons into territory no one had ever even considered comic before. His fervor was so intense that when he passed away suddenly in 1984, it seemed as if the ultimate disappearing act had been staged; one that some people believe is still ongoing, with the reveal soon to come. This makes him the quintessential entertainer of our generation, a man ahead of his time and ours, and a force that has yet to be matched -- even in the mega-saturated media world of the 21st century. Among the many things that Andy achieved in his lifetime (and in the years following), a phonograph album release, the staple of standup comedians in his time, never happened -- until now. Andy and His Grandmother is material never heard before, a skimming from 82 hours of micro-cassette tapes that Andy recorded during 1977- 79. Perhaps the best thing about Andy and His Grandmother is that it extends the body of work that Andy Kaufman pursued relentlessly between 1971 and 1984 with routines never before seen or heard in any of his known performances. This is no recap or greatest hits collection derived from material meant to be seen as well as heard. Andy created these tapes to format his incredible approach on a purely sonic level. The funny to be found in the unfunny, the comedy of everyday existence, the comedy of tragedy, these things are the legacy of Andy Kaufman -- and all are vividly on display throughout Andy and His Grandmother." -Drag City.

Title: Love Has Made Me Stronger
Format: LP
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $19.00
"Recorded as the dust was settling on the unrest of the early 70s and people were in need of a little peace in their lives, Love Has Made Me Stronger recalls the free-wheeling West Coast world of geodesic domes, housemates named Luna, Star, Silver Bird and Nebula and a place called Perfect Park. The sound of Love Has Made Me Stronger is a sound of joy. Music is clearly meant to express love and happiness, desire and wonder, and Carol lets her voice communicate this as shed done at countless shows with only a single accompanying instrument underneath - harp in the early going of the record, keyboards on the second half. Ardent listeners may compare Carol Kleyn to West Coast singers of the era such as Joni Mitchell and Essra Mohawk, but it is our belief that Carol was singing a sound not just her own, but a sound that expressed the time and place that changed so many lives back then. Carols ethereal voice dances over her harp and keyboard arrangements as she sings her dreamy odes to nature, love and living with a full and open heart." -Drag City

Format: CD
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $14.00
"Return of the Silkie, 1983s third chapter in the as-yet unfinished saga of the nomadic West Coast harpist, Carol Kleyn, offers a slice of the wild and free utopian dream that changed so many lives in the 60s and 70s. Pure and simple, harp and vocals, accompanied only by scattings of harbor seals and sea lions, this loosely woven concept album includes gentle reminders that life is short -- take it in while you can -- and, along the way, try to preserve the magnificence of this world for the next generation. Sentiments and music as hauntingly true today as the day they were first sung and recorded. Carols lyrics close with: theres a storm over paradise and its we who decide / just how long we shall live / or when we shall die. The instrumental that follows, and closes this album, reiterates that message with the cries of sea lions in the background, as the Silkie returns, perhaps by choice, to her underwater origins. The vinyl format is represented by a remastered, newly-pressed LP, packaged in the original album jackets and recently signed, with love, from Carol to you. As George Winston once wrote to her: I enjoy the new album. I like it the best, just you and harp." - Drag City.

Title: Takin The Time
Format: LP
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $18.00
"The musical journeys of CAROL KLEYN continue with the reissue of Takin The Time, her eclectic second album, originally released in 1980. Eight years after writing her first songs and dropping out of college to pursue her passion as a street musician, Carol was still following the love, making music and magic as she roamed free up and down the California coastline. The harp that BOBBY BROWN gave her back in 1971 was still her main axe whenever she played, and the primary instrument she used on her debut album Love Has Made Me Stronger. That record had been self-produced, and Carol sold copies wherever she played, but for the production of Takin The Time, Bobby Brown stepped into the producers role. He had already produced two incredible albums for himself (The Enlightening Beam of Axonda and Bobby Brown Live) and in the studio, he succeeded in marrying his sound to Carols, producing a sleek, light vibe that conveyed all the hope and joy that Carols songs held within themselves. Carol played with a band for the first half of the record, while the other half embraced the more familiar solo setting that her audience knew and loved. These were smooth sounds for a new decade that included concerns about the environment and an ever present prayer for peace." - Drag City

"Trade paperback approx. 350 pages, 24.98 list price. Reproduces all the original pages, mostly hand-written or featuring primitive xerox art, that were published in small editions, 1992 thru 1999. Youre excused if youve never seen or heard of these "fanzines". Influential line: "Janet Jackson thinks Christ is a Hoax." There are many other pages with similar sentiment, but dude, the vibe is a little scurrilous... "Going back through the years...its so hard to remember, I was always tripping and falling over myself. These zines were written over the last fifteen years, mostly in dark rooms and the basements of old people. With names like Adulthood, Foster Homes and Gardens, Pocahontas Monthly, Hümer, and others, they were sold in limited editions out of the Alleged Gallery and Andrea Rosen Gallery. Some were sold on street corners and given away to the tramp sects that were so prominent during that time period. Scraps of paper and half thoughts in the guise of art objects, you see. Not many people actually got a chance to have these but the ones who are still amongst the living have greatly benefited. I know one lady in Panama who has the complete set, her family has stopped referring to her as a gimp, now they call her Sue. They were never meant to be collectible -- just low-concept laugh-inducing juxtapositions of words and images, images and images, lists, monologues, cartoons, free verse, jokes, half-thoughts, fake/real interviews, innuendo and Matt Dillons phone number. If you sold them on eBay for a bunch of money, I want my cut. Or if you bought them then please spare a percentage to the dyke army and the flame militia, its a good charity and its ribbon buttons are invisible. Some of them read like letters from prison. I know these were popular in some prisons but Im not sure why." -Harmony Korine, 2008.

"Limited deluxe box set containing exact reproductions of the original eight fanzines. "Some of these collected fanzines were done in collaboration with Mark Gonzales. Harmony and Mark would go back and forth, trying to make each other laugh. Theyd stay up for days writing poems based on the names of famous people like Mae West Go East. When there were enough sheets, theyd put them in some kind of order, a lot of time they would use the pages as pillows. It was a lot of fun, lots of laughs. Weve tried to reproduce them in trade paperback form with the same production values -- which is to say, not much. They also come in an ultra-deluxe limited-edition box-set containing replicas of the original fanzines, for those of you with your eyes on future auction profits. Fuckers. Harmonys house burned down around 2000 or something. At that point, the focus shifted. And he got lazy. But today, weve got this collection of seven fanzines from a time of innocence, exploration, experimentation, discovery, depression and hanging around. Including these fanzines: My Friend Or Sheep Boy, Adulthood, Adulthood 2, Oh Death Where Is Thy Sting, Foster Homes And Gardens, Humor. Pocahontas Monthly, Hümer." -Drag City.

Title: Kick The Habit
Format: DVD
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $16.00
"Kick That Habit is a 1989 film by Peter Liechti, an audio-visual portrait of his native country, eastern Switzerland. The film collects samples from the land-and-soundscape, underscoring in the process the oft-ignored industrial underpinning of our latter-day culture. Also native to eastern Switzerland is Voice Crack, the everyday household electronics duo of Norbert Möslang and Andy Guhl, whose musical workings are explored as part of Liechtis vision. Whether clicking quietly and rhythmically or humming and shrieking at ear-splitting volume, their recycled electronics produce innovative sounds and provide an appropriate accompaniment in this cinematic search for the detritus of our culture, the lost and destroyed remains of the last century of progress. Kick That Habit is a short, tense film comprised of flashing images: footage of Voice Crack rehearsals and concerts is juxtaposed with visual shards of the fall and winter landscape of the area between Alpstein and the Bodensee. Utilizing color and black-and-white footage as well as combining the visual and the acoustic in an expression that subtly synthesizes the two, Liechti delineates a world of existence through sound and geography. Like the world the rest of us live in, its a world of beauty, quiet tragedy and the endless march forward. NTSC, 42 minutes, 4:3, mono, all-region." -Drag City

Title: Signers Suitcase: On the Road with Roman Signer
Format: DVD
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $16.00
"Signers Suitcase (aka Signers Koffer) is a kind of road movie across Europe -- from the Swiss Alps to eastern Poland, from Stromboli to Iceland. Always following the scenerys magically-charged contours, immersing yourself, letting yourself be infected, then traveling on. And what better traveling companion than the elusive artist Roman Signer? A quiet roommate -- but always with something unexpected up his sleeve. A road trip requires finding the right places. On the road through Signers Suitcase, Roman Signer brings his chosen spots alive using a variety of tricks from his kit bag, launching brilliantly simple operations with a combination of gunpowder, fuses, rubber boots, balloons, stools, small tables and other seemingly random items. All his endeavors result in a marvelous visual display full of poker-faced humor that has earned him a place on the cover of Gastr del Sols Upgrade & Afterlife, as well as the sometimes-title, Roman Signer: The Buster Keaton Of Art. Signers Suitcase is also a journey through a state of mind, a tightrope walk from fun to melancholy. Mental and physical risk promote stimulus of the senses -- and sudden crashes and abrupt changes of mood determine the rhythm and atmosphere of this cinematic journey. Peter Liechti, whose collaboration with Voice Crack, Kick That Habit, was just reissued by Drag City, saw a calling in Roman Signer: the preservation of work that so resolutely resists commercial evaluation...or at least the capturing of it photographically, so that in some way it would endure. The sensuality and simple clarity on the one hand as well as this unimpeachable, almost religious being on the other were the challenge of filming Roman Signers work. On the cinematic journey we made together, Roman Signer in a way dictated the route; the film improvises as we proceed on our way." - Drag CIty

Format: LP

Country: USA
Price: $19.00
"Like something out of pulp science fiction, the record known as Mad Music, Inc appeared in the Boston area in the late 70s without track titles, credits or contact information. Beautifully packaged, the record exuded a mystery so mysterious as to be entirely unclear if the creator(s) even realized how odd the whole thing was. To be clear -- this is not one of those phony discoveries that seem to show up with increasing regularity these days. Collectors have known about Mad Music for years, but the very few who know the story arent talking. Play the record, and everything becomes more unclear still. . . . What is this music, and who is it for? Is it some mutant strain of new age, jazz, a soundtrack? Would it explain anything to know that the jam at the end of side one is called Gospel Disco? Does it help if we disclose that this lushly arranged album features professionals and amateurs working together? Is it a put-on? Or was there some greater purpose involved? The world may never know. For the fine folks who actually buy records, randomly selected copies come with one of a kind inserts -- authentic 35-year-old documents from the Mad Music archives -- an underwater loudspeaker catalog, a photo from the recording studio, an academic clipping entitled Cerebral Dominance in Musicians and Nonmusicians. But even if you buy the entire run and put it all together, this is one mystery you may never solve. We can promise you this -- youve never experienced anything like Mad Music, Inc." -Drag City.

Working with engineer SCOTT COLBURN (Sun City Girls, Animal Collective, Sir Richard Bishop), Magik Markers have captured a lot of different moods and twitches on Balf Quarry. Tremoring mid-rhythms form the body, with a couple showers of hardcore, high flying free-duo style and several clinking music boxes of woe as well. On slower tunes, the mass of brooding guitar tone generated is ELISAs signature, a carving all of her own. Fills, licks and other touches move the songs a broken arms length away from a fundament of chaos and horror." - Drag City

"Oh, Magik Markers -- you dirty fuckers! You look like a reasonably intelligent young woman and man -- perhaps a bit intense, but who isnt in these end times? Then the needle drops and youre amok, dusting us from the git-go, wild-eyed in a china shop where stop keeps meaning more. Ah, if it were only music -- but it would appear youve rethought that too. And would it kill you to crack a smile? When an album begins with a song called Risperdal, one should assume a mind-and-body-slamming forty-five minutes or so are underway. And one wouldnt be wrong, dickhead. Sure, Balf Quarry has moody space in its soul, melodies whether stretched over rock, ululating rhythm, chimes n piano and/or wah-wah. Regardless of the configuration, Elisa Ambrogio and Pete Nolan are locked together, beating it out, listening to feeling the sound of their earth quake. And slicing through all the atmosphere, Elisas voice is a spear of light, splashes of mud, an acid purple flashback. The Balf Quarry libretto reads like an inner monologue of some poor bastard from The Stand: desperate and vengeful musings from the head of a witness to and survivor of an apocalypse, in a world they never made, dreaming helplessly of the demons out west. Safe before their life sets in might mean hope in this landscape. The worlds not broken -- people ruin it every time. Fills, licks and other touches move the songs a broken arms length away from a fundament of chaos and horror. When colors actually match and you have grey music for grey days, its great -- but what about grey music for cherry red lava days, or rainbow sounds arcing over six months of darkness? Anything goes -- and just your luck, Magik Markers have brought anything with them on Balf Quarry -- a multicolored projectile of vomit you can sing along to! If psychosis is your thing, Balf Quarry is like a jukebox just for you. The only thing its missing is a brick attached to the CD to facilitate throwing it through your window! No, were not talking about you, asshole. This is the royal you -- the you of all Magik Markers fandom, the you of anyone with ears and the guts for this shit. Wot fun! Prepare for the birth of the second sun, yall." - Drag City

Title: Ice Skater/Machines
Format: 7"
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $6.00
"What a single! Magik Markers put the sense-and-sensibility back into sensuality with Ice Skater, which radiates the mystic allure and cool remove of the best of them pretzel people n cold-water dancers. Theres always been that starched-collar, puritanical undercarriage to the MM vibe, right? Well here, it melts all over you with a winsome melody, bloodless disco beat and nu-romance synths blearing in pastel flares behind. This aint your fathers Magik Markers -- and now that youre ten, you can make up your own mind about what Magik Markers u want in ur life, LOL. Course, knowing the gutter-obsessional bent of Magik Markers, maybe Ice Skater is just about blowing meth too, right? The B-side balances the new Markers scale with a blast of freejams based on the chords of... well, no chords." - Drag City

Title: Mirror/Messenger
Format: LP
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $16.00
"Now giant-size and louder than ever, Major Stars plunge further down the path of their second, larger life with Mirror/Messenger. Their new sextet record features the same triple-guitar frontline and fervid vocalizations from Sandra Barrett as did 2006s Syntoptikon - but with more songs then ever before found on a single Major Stars album (as many as two albums, in several cases). Mirror/Messenger is an assault on popular music, with considerable muscle exerted to create a jukebox-ready duck-and-shuffle - if the needle dont get tossed out the groove, that is." - Drag City. Title: Return to Form
Format: LP
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $16.00
"When youve got a love for music, theres no time to spare. The band called Major Stars all got other gigs that take them from place to place without room to converse much. Thats okay, because theyre about playing music, not small talkin! So whats been going on around the practice space then? Major Stars have a new one that might lay it on you all at once like a plank of solid stone, and theyre calling it Return to Form. Starting with a mid-fight schoolyard threat like Better Stay Down (what, no exclamation point?), Major Stars do definitely seem to be returning to somewhere on this new new album, maybe even perhaps somewhere adolescent where the rock and roll was never better? But really, titling the whole damn thing Return to Form has some humor in it. Mirror/Messenger wasnt out of form; all Major Stars records have been a part of a vision and even if some shit said he or she (probably he) didnt like it, that doesnt really call for a response title on the next album. We read it like this: its you whos returning to form! Major Stars atomized you to fucking bits on the last record and only now are you returning to a fully formed entity. And here Major Stars are to blow you to pieces again. Youre fucked up. Return to Forms got eight pieces, all heavy rocks, a few of them come with power jams. Theres also a few just under three minutes, but distinguished by riffage that lifts em up. The guitars trio of Wayne Rogers, Kate Village and Tom Leonard is into their third full album as such, allowing them to have fused into a wall of distorto with a myriad of identities but singular purpose. Behind their ubiquitous combination signal, the drums trample with pummelous authority. Still, they cant help but sound a bit crushed by the din, glorious din. This is Major Stars signature rock of the easties -- more likened to the sounds of Motorpsycho than any of that psych-rock these days! Again, this is organic growth, home territory. Could it be that the space you know is better than the space you dont know? Major Stars got answer, and its Return to Form." - Drag City.

Title: The Good Old-Fashioned Way
Format: LP

Price: $16.00
"The late Hamper McBee was a moonshiner, carnival barker, and ballad singer of legendary proportions. First discovered and recorded by folklorist and performer Guy Carawan in 1964, Hampers prodigious talent and personality won him admirers not only in his native Smoky Mountains but throughout the folk music world, where his wholly unique approach to old-time ballads and lyric songs struck like revelations. He drew from both the oral tradition and from records -- he especially loved Bradley Kincaid, Vernon Dalhart, and, surprisingly, Burl Ives -- to create a repertoire entirely his own, and that he sung in a warm, powerful voice seasoned by prodigious quantities of cigarettes, booze, and joie de vivre. Recorded by renowned country music scholar Charles K. Wolfe and filmmaker Sol Korine at Hampers home in Monteagle, Tennessee, in 1977, The Good Old-Fashioned Way compiles the best of McBees traditional ballads, affecting original compositions, and outlandish, side-splitting stories of life on the carnival circuit, at the moonshine still, in the back of Sheriff Bill Malones patrol car, and as Hamper McBee. Youve never met anyone like him before. Youll be glad you did." -Drag City

Title: Voices in a Rented Room
Format: LP
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $15.00
"Sometimes its best to see the world in black and white. Shades of grey are for ps, right-and NEW BUMS have ridden the hard road all the way to this, their album debut. Theyve played around and theyve hit the singles scene (havent you turned up "Slim Volume"? 7"EP of the year, man!), but Voices in a Rented Room tells their whole life story and probably more of yours than youd care to admit. The voices are two, spinning harmonies both heavenly and salt-pickled. Picking their direction and floating along on a pair of acoustics, New Bums are the sound of old drunk America, dancing out of the shadows, coming forth again to stand in the light, in the hopes of repopulating those sad old single-occupancy hotels before theyre all torn down. New Bums is the grudging match-up of DONVAN QUINN (SKYGREEN LEOPARDS) and BEN CHASNY (SIX ORGANS OF ADMITTANCE, COMETS ON FIRE, 200 YEARS, RANGDA)." - Drag City.

Title: An American Trilogy
Format: 4 CD Box Set
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $34.00
"The release of Mickey Newburys An American Trilogy 4xCD box in May of this year was a moment for a serious reconsideration of one of Americas finest lost songwriters. The late Mickey Newburys heyday in the late 1960s and 1970s seems long ago now, but his music is a continued vital force, as was proven by the quick selling through of a limited edition deluxe version of the box-set. Now that this has gone, there are still more who want to and need to know about this music. With this in mind, we are presenting an unlimited edition version with a few less bells and whistles, but all the great music and a still-fat-and-informative version of the accompanying booklet. The albums that constitute An American Trilogy - Looks Like Rain, Frisco Mabel Joy and Heaven Help the Child - were recorded between 1969 and 1973 at a home studio in Madison, Tennessee. Cinderella Sound was a converted two-car garage adjacent to the house of guitarist and engineer Wayne Moss - but you would never know this based on the magisterial sound of these albums, which are regarded as prime works in Mickeys recorded canon. The set is released in a custom-made digipak folder produced in association with Grammy winning designer Susan Archie, who designed the Albert Ayler Holy Ghost and Charlie Patton Screamin and Hollerin the Blues box sets. The package includes a fourth CD of rarities, alternate versions and a 1970 radio session recorded for Los Angeles DJ Skip Weshner. The 28-page booklet features rare photos from the Newbury family archives and extensive liner notes. If you havent already been, An American Trilogy provides a rich and compelling trip to the deep space of Mickey Newbury, one of the most extraordinary and unique artists in American popular music." - Drag City.

This Nig-Heist reissue LP contains all the original Nig-Heist material: not just the album, but the Walking Down the Street 7", the song from the Chunks comp, some outtakes, and the live CD. Title: Split
Format: 7"
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $7.00
"The split single is a humble thing rarely transcending its temporal limitations. A great split draws connections, leverages fame, and creates a cohesive, singular experience. Drag City and Yoga Records proudly present such an experience courtesy of WOO & NITE JEWEL. The recording project of RAMONA GONZALEZ, Nite Jewel crashed the party a few years back with the now-classic "Good Evening," and won legions of new fans with her recent second long player One Second Of Love. The Nite Jewel side is a moody mix of thick synth riffs and the Frippertonic-like guitar of COREY LEE GRANET. But this record has a mission-to spotlight a duo flying just under the radar for more than 30 years now: brothers CLIVE & MARK IVES of WOO. Working in a variety of instrumental forms, WOO features a pulsing sound as distinctive and additive as anything by Kraftwerk or ESG. Comparisons like that only sound like crazy talk if youre unfamiliar with WOO, so check out the new reissue of their 1989 album Its Cosy Inside. Its not crazy talk." - Drag City.

Artist: P.G. SIX
Title: Slightly Sorry
Format: LP
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $13.50
"Pat Gubler (aka P.G. Six) came on the scene in 1994, as a member of Memphis Luxure, a noise/rock band from Port Chester, NY. That band morphed into Tower Recordings, a musically omnivorous ensemble that released several albums on the Siltbreeze and Communion labels over the past decade. Pats first solo album, Parlor Tricks and Porch Favorites saw the light of day in 2001, followed by The Well of Memory in 2004. Music from the Sherman Box Series, a collection of instrumentals, arrived in late 2006. His music fuses an unlikely range of influences including 60s British folk, country rock, & experimental music. On Slightly Sorry, in addition to the Anglo-Irish quasi-folk influences, you get some Garth Hudson attempts, some Roger McGuinn-izations, the odd Crazy Horse-ism and a pretty nifty cover of a song by Youngbloods pal Jeffrey Cain (note there is a near-approximation of some Dave Schramm-ittude on that Cain number - not really but kinda. Okay, maybe not). After all influences have been calculated, the roots-informed, detail-obsessed, defiantly handspun sound - and the transcendently glossy results of such alchemy, make the truth about P.G. Six." - Drag City. CD also available.

Starry Mind picks up the tale with a fully electrified Celtic traditional and dances lightly forward, with guitar lines chiming and entwining above while drums and bass deliver thumping kicks below. Pat P.G. Six Gubler is still enmeshed in the mystic and the unknowable even as he feels and knows the fullness of his rock phase. Applying everything he has learned to this latest passage, he relaxes as he dissolves his latest epistles into the fresh, clean, communal air." - Drag City.

Artist: PAREDES, CARLOS
Title: Movimento Perpetuo
Format: LP
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $16.00
"CARLOS PAREDES was once almost hit by the famed Fado singer Amalia Rodrigues, while performing at her home. Rumor has it that this was her reaction whenever she was deeply moved by someones artistry. Paredes was one of the greatest Portuguese guitarists, and a symbol of the Portuguese culture-not simply a great composer, but one of the men behind the world-wide understanding of his instrument and his country. The Portuguese guitar is an instrument that dates back several hundred years. It was built according to different standards around the country, but by the time Paredes began playing it, it had been generally agreed upon the construction: a short-necked, wide-bodied instrument with twelve-strings strung in six courses comprising two steel strings each. It has a distinctive tuning mechanism and it is most notably associated with the traditional Portuguese popular music known as fado. Carlos Paredes, "the Man with the thousand Fingers," passed away in 2004, after a long, ten-year fight with a disease that tragically prevented him from playing his instrument in those final years of his life. His musical voice has never really been stilled-but this reissue of the Guitarra Portuguesa and Movimento Perpetuo LPs marks the first time they have ever been released in the United States and the first time they have been repressed anywhere, since 1983. The artwork for both records is a near-perfect copy of the 1967 and 1971 originals, complete with original Portuguese liner notes (and English translations for the unfortunates among us who do not speak the lingua portuguesa)." -Drag City.

"The second of the Groovys was actually the first to be recorded, back in 1974. Sky Yen dated back to PETE SHELLEYs college days, where he chaired an Electronic Music Society, playing records over the intercom during lunch hour. After hed made the recordings that became Sky Yen six years later, he added them to his playlist-and his schoolmates consternation. The material wasnt exactly easy listening/ambient style-it was raw waves of oscillator tones, wildly leaping up and down and stretching out into a pair of twenty-minute pieces., Thirty years of electronics-saturated music culture lends perspective to the appeal of Sky Yen-the albums edges are still jagged and sharp." -Drag City.

Title: Dizzy Polizzy
Format: LP
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $19.00
"Discerning ears will link Dizzy Polizzy to Public Service Announcement (recorded in 2007) since they were made more or less back-to-back, and we wouldnt disagree. Dizzy is kind of the more innocent sister to PSA, sweet songs and mini-ragers, a baby version of the squalor that would soon grow too much hair in all the right places. Dizzy Polizzy serves up the beginnings, going all the way back to 2004, building off solid, breakfast-of-champion prototype-sounds from the likes Halen and Neil Young and head-butting them in a Hissier direction. This album reissues the cassette compilation on LP for the first time ever, to tide Hiss-heads over while Purling Hiss works on their next LP that melds the evolutions of Water on Mars with the devolutions of the now-defined Dizzy Polizzy strain." - Drag City.

Water on Mars is Purling Hisss first recording outside the fuzzy confines of Mike Polizzes inner rock utopia, where the first three albums and EP were constructed in solitude with a home-recording setup. "RANGDAs been building up behind the scenes for some time now. As label mates and members of an exclusive mutual admiration society, SIR RICHARD BISHOP and BEN CHASNY  thirsted for a conflagration involving two electric guitars plus a drummer. Bringing in CHRIS CORSANO they recorded a studio session with Seattle sound guru SCOTT COLBURN. Beforehand, a mere ninety minutes was allotted for the three to further discuss ideas and play together for the very first time. What would happen? What do you think happened, stupid? Of course they planted a garden of lyricism seeded with several compositions and several improvisations! Placed end-to-end, the six pieces of the Rangda saga (part the first) rock from splintering onslaught to soulful meditation and back again with manifest precision - this was a planned attack. Unceasing battery slides suddenly into ritual form with elemental ease. The fretworks of Richard Bishop and Ben Chasny split time while Corsano shapes the air around them. Rangdas been building up behind the scenes for some time now. As label mates and members of an exclusive mutual admiration society, Sir Rick and Kid Chasny thirsted for a conflagration involving two electric guitars plus a drummer. In such an environment requiring excellent survival skills as well as composition and improvisation rhythms, who better than Chris Corsano to work the skins... On paper, this was colossal, but actually getting everyone together proved awesomely impossible, with each man in a different city sprawled across the vastness of the United States -- not to mention each mans diverse state of mind sprawled across the vastness of inner space. And so, time passed. Chuckling, the guitar men dreamed of visiting Rangda on our world, working figures on their necks in anticipation. Finally, with the desperate recklessness of the ancient witchsoul herself, they booked a live show, followed by a studio session with Seattle sound guru Scott Colburn. "How we can even claim that Formerly Extinct displays a greater fluidity than the well-oiled zero-to-60Khz hairpins of False Flag is a matter of debate around DC corporate HQ. It seems to depend on how you define the semi-metallic element of sound sometimes called sharp. False Flag featured a tune called Serrated Edges, which made sense in the knife-flying arc of that album. Sharp is a claw-like quality in generous supply on Formerly Extinct as well - a graphic picture in sharp focus, perhaps with cleaner edges yet unmistakably gruesome subjects. While False Flag found these slingers in a whirlwinded shred-fest, each trying to out do each other with what they brought to the Rangda lair (er, recording studio), Formerly Extinct blossoms like the home-grown hybrid of a three-headed beast well-practiced in its body. A lean n amazingly mean, greased-up, child-eating machine. Born to the lower-income caste of the bohemian, Rangda maul the underbelly for fun and profit. Thank Kali that all they need is love! These songs, newfangled and shrouded by ancestral awakenings, bore deep into the layers of consciousness to divine meeting. Like, dig Majnun, for instance. Everybody always talks about Layla, but when does anyone ever pull Majnun out the hat? Enter Rangda with sympathy for the obsessed. To them, the Persian wanna-be lover of classical lit and lore is worth more consideration than George Harrisons ex-wife! Thats the way the Rangda madness lies. Theres no value among the flies of the marketplace - unless you find a copy of Rangdas latest there. Formerly Extinct lives large, no matter how small the arch overhead."

"Eight years later, and in another era entirely, a summing-up occurred with the compilation of short-play Krayola records, Singles. Spanning the years 1969 - 2004, Singles contains many Krayola klassics of the pre-punk, punk, post-punk, etc. eras once represented by labels like Texas Revolution, Rough Trade, Konkurrenz, and uh, Drag City. This comp was released on CD only ten years ago -- imagine that! Here it is for the first time on vinyl." - Drag City.

Title: Sighs Trapped By Liars
Format: CD
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $14.00
"With the entirely new music statement, Sighs Trapped by Liars, The Red Krayola renew their association with conceptual artists, Art & Language. Beginning in 1973, their collaboration includes the video projects Nine Gross and Conspicuous Errors, and Struggle in New York, as well as the much-acclaimed and decried music releases, Corrected Slogans, Kangaroo?, and Black Snakes. Thirty years has mellowed the various parties not at all. The faint-hearted might want to swallow something calming before giving Sighs Trapped by Liars a spin. Sighs Trapped by Liars is as much a delightful bit of latter-day entertainment as it is a sensational musical excursion not trapped in any era. The composers of Red Krayola classics such as Keep All Your Friends, Portrait of V.I.Lenin in the Style of Jackson Pollock, Black Snakes, and Born In Flames have made another try at negotiating the relationship between language and music in this new collection. Speaking in a contemporary (and frequently foul-mouthed) voice they say something we could all stand to hear - in a popular music format that we can all enjoy. Those expecting a further trip into the radical leftist pamphleteering of the former works will have to listen closely; these are new songs for new days. Perspectives are taken from quotes, exhibits and jokes of history are translated into material that addresses the state of the art. This music couldnt be made without the experiences and politics of former days. The questions the 60s asked about the very idea of music and objects inform the practice today; the relationship of these new songs to the old ones is projective and analytical, subject to change without notice." -Drag City.

"Coconut Hotel hails from 1967, when it was recorded for International Artists in the wake of the international success of The Parable of Arable Land. Too far out for its day (!), Coconut Hotel was eventually issued on Drag City in 1995 and features the original Red Crayola at their most extremely experimental, while still retaining the air of whimsey (One-Second Pieces) that permeates all their releases." - Drag City.

Title: What Would It Be Like To Be Rich
Format: LP
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $20.00
"Detroit is, as ever, a mystery wrapped in a wasteland. After Motown blew out of town, as if on the last chopper out of Danang, the volatile periphery remained intact-minus its binding barycenter. A young RICHARD RISTAGNO was there, naively participating in the riots that cancelled Detroits application to the echelons of the modern American cities. After hearing about the riots on the radio, he and his MIDNIGHT RIDERS garage band ventured into the periphery, only to get busted for looting. He would be detained again, a year or so later, by Selective Service. Narrowly escaping an uncertain fate in Vietnam, Ristagno served his time in sleepy zones like Fort Knox in Kentucky and German outposts. Returning to Michigan in 1971, he plotted his first recordings. With two original songs in mind, he found a vanity operation jand stamped out what was to be an initial pressing of 500 copies, nearly all of which were sent to radio stations nationwide. After the world failed to beat a path to his door, the initial pressing became the only pressing. He moved on... finding work at a steel treatment plant, where he managed to accumulate the largesse for a more grandiose scheme. What Would It Be Like To Be Rich was to be an autobiographical concept album. In 1981, nearly ten years after his ill-fated single, Ristagno saw an ad in the Detroit News for a recording studio called Soular Sound, and submitted an inquiry about availability. To complete his vision, he would need to hire a band... not surprisingly owner/engineer CONLEY ABRAMS was the bassist of a local funk band called SOULAR FLIGHT. The recordings occurred quickly in 1981. The fusion of Soular Flights disco tendencies with Ristagnos angsty delivery seemingly anticipates industrial and techno, and reflects contemporaries like The Contortions or DNA. In reality, Ristagno remained blissfully ignorant, and cites influences such as Aerosmith, Fleetwood Mac, and the perennially influential Beatles. Despite a cover concept, Ristagno took the completed LP to Archer Record Pressing and manufactured 100 copies. He had, perhaps, jumped the gun... though he had a cover concept, he didnt have the means to execute the artwork. His initial pressing remained in his parents basement, completely undistributed, underclothed in just frail paper sleeves. It was the 45 single, strategically planted randomly outside Ristagnos domicile, that saved its doomed younger brother. Michigan rock specialists DANIEL SCHLOSSER and BEN BLACKWELL approached Ristagno and freed his personal opus from private imprisonment. Although the grim worldview presented within seems to beg for isolation, its not the work of music lovers to enable further isolation." -Rob Sevier, 2012.

2013 repress. "1998, and according to the press, Royal Trux were back in action. Given the powerful response to Accelerator, an EP would be needed soon -- and with a long European tour impending, what better time than the present? In short order, the three songs were recorded, along with a fourth, a cover of Dire Straits Money for Nothing which was set aside to be used as a B-side for a planned UK single release. The songs were a funky bunch -- Deafer Than Blind was a sweet n sour ballad built off a drum loop, Run, Shaker Life was a Richie Havens cover with spiritual overtones and The United States of America vs. One 1974 Cadillac El Dorado Sedan was a proggy group jam that featured an extensive libretto and comprised one of the longest Royal Trux song yet. The static-crisp high end ofAccelerator was abandoned in favor of a smeared, bottom-heavy sound, showcasing the thunder in the stomping rhythm section and a darker tone in Hagertys bent-neck histrionics. This was something that one might almost regard as straight-up rock in Royal Trux terms, and Neil and Jennifer harmonized in their own unique way throughout the record. 3-Song EP is now available again for the first time in almost a decade." - Drag City

"As we steer ourselves away post-haste from the (semi-arbitrary watershed) year 2000 (or 2001, if youre that kind), many among us are still unsure of which stance to prefer: that of the forward-looking visionary elite or the historically-informed cult of the sentimentalist. Confusing times, but timely times for the reissue of Royal Truxs 1998 masterpiece (according to many, though we are inclined to believe that all of their releases were equally masterful), Accelerator. This album split the difference and intersected both angles to create an ass-kicking music machine that still confronts today with its dialed-out production values rendering ten tunes of glittering platinum hooks and colored by numbers with hooligan-outfitted choruses." - Drag City.

"This 32-song bomb was dropped on a highly suspect America back in the early winter of 1997. It was a celebration of the then-major label act known as ROYAL TRUX. The songs were collected from along the various ways theyd passed by from 1988 to around the time they were signed to Virgin in 1994. The title really says it all, without delivering strictly on the promise; rather than divide the album into sections dedicated to each of the above, the singles, live and unreleased tracks were scrambled in unchronologic / anthropomorphic / anti-idiomatic fashion to represent a living, breathing entity built of contradictions, rhythm, gleeful exploitation of limitations and cliches, the short con (and when you finally notice, theyd slip into the long one) and above all, total commitment. This was a band to which the word "definition" had no meaning, other than as the punch-line to a variety of jokes that we wont bore you with right now. You may never understand unless you sit in a crouch for three days, on the balls of your feet with the knees pointing out like arrows before you. And then maybe youll know how it feels. Some people in this life have no choice, theyve been Indians since the day they were born. Others take it upon themselves. This was Royal Trux. I took all the tapes I had: rehearsals, studio stuff that survived, other random shit like shortwave recording etc and cut that together in a long collage. Then I broke that into short segments arbitrarily, about the length of a good rock song. "Back in March of this year, we issued RTXs second ball-busting album, under a title that we all really loved and you did too. But the man! The man came down on us, telling us that in a court of law the album with that title would be struck down and that we must cease and rethink. Thusly armed, we went to RTX and told them that a rebirth was at hand. Fortunately, they were up for the change - and RaTX is the inevitable result! Containing the exact same contents as its former self, RaTX has the additional benefit of being released in a super-limited vinyl edition (manufactured behind the former Iron Curtain) with exclusive artwork. Its the least we can do to party in the face of the man and his stupid rules and laws. If you havent given rock of the heaviest kind a spin this year, RaTX is the album you need to have. "Jennifer Herrema is back. Its not the Royal Trux, its RTX. Flash to the present. Transmaniacon sounds instead like it was recorded on Mars -- or maybe Saturn. Together, Jennifer, Nadav Eisenman and Jaimo Welch track into new territory. The sounds will immediately make sense, sounds formed into the tightest breed of pure rock energy. A mass of guitars that squirm and scream around the granite rock of the rhythm section, occasionally rocketing into the sky -- pre-verb ricochets colliding with waves of synth and razor sharp vocals cutting right through anything in their path. Jennifer summons the ageless teenager eating cotton candy with the summertime blues and it all boils down hot and cold into one piece of controlled rage post-apocalyptic marching music, or titanium stadium rock, with tight pop rhythms. And the vibe is dead on weird, ripe with images. . . what comes to mind. . .biker gangs, sci-fi mythology, and personal introspection (destruction and then triumph formed from the ashes). This is the sound of RTX." - Drag City. CD also available.

"Surrealism raised its willfully mutated head on the third Groovy release, Hangahar, credited to SALLY SMMIT AND HER MUSICIANS. Claiming to be the soundtrack of the film Hangahar, the album was inspired by a casual demonstration of a made-up sung language. A full-blown recording session captured this previously unheard quantity, the better to wake the world to its allure. The Groovy gang broke out the oscillator and any other synth devices they had on hand (along with a kitchen cabinet full of impromptu percussives) to back up the operatic overtones of the mysterious eponymous chantueses via drones, riffs, chanting and, with reverb pots fully open, loads of ominous atmosphere throughout. Despite the deep feeling of synchronous accord throughout this recording, it has proved to be something of a path not followed for the once and future SALLY TIMMS of eventual MEKONS fame." -Drag City.

"Ever shrouded, serpentine by design, the legend of the Sic Alps has at last made its way to the gates of Drag City. The new, first-time-ever-on-vinyl 2xLP reissue of A Long Way Around To A Shortcut is somehow a greatest hits of the golden not-quite-decade of Sic Alps. Well, not quite golden, either. Can gold be tarnished? Can it be done on purpose? If so, Sic Alps are artisans of the highest order -- for their music is the bright, surging sound of ye olde rock and roll radio (and the garages that tuned in), but heard through air darkened with specks of nameless obstruction. In and amongst their ingrown sounds, Sic Alps take on classic tunes from Strapping Fieldhands, Throbbing Gristle and The Zipps on A Long Way Around To A Shortcut. It is to their credit that they completely absorb their estimated predecessors and create the only sound left to them: the sound of the Sic Alps. A Long Way Around To A Shortcut was issued as a CD in 2008. It collected songs that were first issued throughout the epic years of 2006 and 2007 on two 12"EPs, three 7" singles and a cassette, plus a song from a compilation CD-R and a song released nowhere else but on the ALWATAS compilation. The records were originally given titles like United, Strawberry Guillotine, Semi- Streets, Hip-Hop Sweepers Vol 1, Teenage Alps, The Soft Tour in Rough Form-- but all these original releases are long gone, and the CDs fairly much OOP as well. Can this vinyl version be far behind? The hordes are coming, so heed well and get your own copi(es) in stock now." With full color innersleeves. -Drag City

The four tracks on this record are stuck together from different sessions, recorded half by King Riff at Bauer Mansion and half by Sic Alps at home. Though the sound is classic Sic, their face has been rearranged, and this time out, Mike D is aided and abetted by a whos-who of the SF gutter-gold scene: members of Thee Oh Sees, Ty Segall and all of Big Techno Werewolves made tracks on the last track of this mother." - Drag City.

"SIX ORGANS OF ADMITTANCE as an electric entity is not without precedent, BEN CHASNY regularly performs with a full, electric band, often cascades an electric guitar solo in the middle of an acoustic jam, and has recorded entire sides of electric drone. This element goes all the way back to 2002, when a short-lived rock version of Six Organs (with the members of COMETS ON FIRE) toured the West Coast and etched a few demos to tape before moving on. Ten years later, with the idea to record new songs as a full rock band firmly entrenched in his mind, Chasny warped over to TIM GREENs Louder Studios witm members of Comets On Fire as his backing band. He emerged with Ascent, the rollicking realizationof the Six Organs full band experience." - Drag City

Title: Asleep On The Floodplain
Format: LP
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $18.00
"Comprised of ten blissful, primarily acoustic tunes, a delicacy wafts forth from Asleep On The Floodplain, the new album by SIX ORGANS OF ADMITTANCE. After 2009s sonically dense Luminous Night, BEN CHASNY returned to the familiar environs of home recording to sculpt and assemble this batch of jams, freeing himself from the restrictions and deadlines studios might normally impose upon a song. Thus creating a living nest in which this material could grow and breathe, the album took longer to complete but sounds effortless-and bright with light. Much of Asleep On The Floodplain draws on imagery from Chasnys youth, a time spent in Elk River. "Dawn, Running Home" remembers sleep-overs in a friends tree-fort and the subsequent morning return to Bens own house. He wrote "Above a Desert Ive Never Seen" while bed-ridden for a week. "Hold But Let Go" was meant for a film, but never used. Maintaining Six Organs penchant for cameos, ELISA AMBROGIO Magik-ally contributes to "River of My Youth." The theopoetics of CATHERINE KELLER resonate on "S/Word and Leviathan"; while GASTON BACHELARDs poetics of reverie are felt throughout the record." -Drag City

Title: Hexadic
Format: CD
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $14.00
"THE SYSTEM builds all of the tonal fields, chord changes, scales, and lyrics on this record, creating the framework for the songs with which the musicians engage. Yet THE SYSTEM is open; within the framework, Chasnys own personal aesthetics -- such as the production mode of loud guitars, the order of songs, the editing of length -- were all conscious decisions made to communicate the pieces. The exact same combinatorial patterns used on this record can create infinite results, depending on the choices of the individual. Bens years of study have produced an operational agent that has not only built all the songs on Hexadic but is also a system anyone can use to restructure their ways of habit. The first thing one notices when listening to Hexadic is how unhinged it all sounds. The album brews and boils with an ominously dark tone in a desolate space, somehow dense with energy, guitar overdriven past the point of sanity, slamming drum accents, vocals cutting through in what seems to be comprised of another, as yet unheard, language. Yet, inside the apparent wild abandon and destruction is a strict internal logic of construction that unveils itself upon listening. This is the majestic dialectic of Hexadic." - Drag City.

Title: Luminous Night
Format: LP
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $16.00
"Through dark days and glowing nights, Six Organs of Admittance continues to step to the far rim of the world with purposeful strides. Indeed, new horizons are visible throughout Luminous Night. Be it in the face of spiritual crisis or catharsis, Ben Chasny as Six Organs refuses to stagnate, or to evolve in predictable fashion; in response, he keeps moving on. This is the first Six Organs of Admittance albums with such a lengthy gap between it and its former number. In the past two years Chasny has kept busy writing this new epic, moving house to Seattle, composing soundtracks for novels and movies, and touring constantly in America and Europe (with bands like The Dead C and OM) as well as being invited by legendary post-metal group Neurosis to play their Beyond The Pale festival in Belgium. Six Organs of Admittance is such a singular experience that it is sometimes easy to forget that Ben was the lead guitarist in Comets On Fire, as well as a songwriter and guitarist for Current 93s Black Ships Ate The Sky album and half of the pan-Pacific psych-folk duo August Born. But clearly, Chasny knows heavy, having grown through times of heavy and times of light. And in answer to the question whats heavier, a pound of rock or a pound of feathers, Six Organs of Admittance has devised this for Luminous Night: a pound of rock covered with a pound of feathers -- twice as heavy, but feathery light to the human eye. With Luminous Night, Chasnys working with some heavy dudes, like producer Randall Dunn and Eyvind Kang, whose sound on viola shines with a guiding glow throughout the album (both Dunn and Kang contributed their talents to the outré arrangements of the recent Sunn O))) album). The other invaluable contributors to the album are Hans Teuber on flute, Tor Dietrichson on tabla, Matt Chamberlin on drums, and Dave Abramson on percussion. Occupying their spots with care, theyve collaborated to create something rich and vibrant, aching and new, in the world of Six Organs of Admittance. The arc of Luminous Night is wide as the sky, commencing with a stirring instrumental evocation of the Greek myth of poor Actaeon before flowing into the vocal, the vengeful, the ancient, the divine and celestial, scored with guitars, bass, viola, flute, tabla, electronics and synthesizer, as well as a buried-in-the-rain-soaked-earth-of- Seattle-then-exhumed four-track cassette that formed the basis of the instrumental Cover Your Wounds With the Sky. For its blanketing sound, Luminous Night draws inspiration from such cinematic sources as Jodorowkys El Topo soundtrack and the scores of Kurosawas samurai films, but is at the same time music that could only have come from the singular sound world of Six Organs of Admittance. What is it about the man that buries his sound in the ground? He has faith in the earth, for one. When we think of Six Organs of Admittance, we think of a man with six-string ambitions, a rambler with mystic beliefs and dark electric visions. Its a big universe and were only human, which basically means that weve got spirit and that were going to die. But until then, we live. Six Organs of Admittance has lived to tell about it on Luminous Night."

Format: Double CD

Price: $17.00
"The double-CD epic called RTZ (named after the button on a Tascam 484 that returns to zero) fashions several lesser-known pieces from Six Organs of Admittances early years into a massive prismatic arc, colossal and organic like some wonder of the ancient world. How could it be otherwise? Even when existing as only one half of a record, as many of these pieces once did (and still do, somewhere), Mr. 6OOA (Ben Chasny, yall!) leans into the eternal -- letting the winds of Time scar his face and the light of All There Is burn his skin black. Grandmaster Chas has sacrificed the body for his music time and again over the years. RTZ is an iridescent chimera infull flight, viewed through stained glass. Cataloging these early non-album excursions requires a bit of leg-(and mind)work. RTZ travels back to the dawn of this century to locate Resurrection, half of a Time-Lag split 12 with Charalambides. Warm Earth, Which Ive Been Told is half of a Mental Telemetry split CD with Vibracathedral Orchestra and Magic Carpithans from 2003. You Can Always See the Sun, was part of Three Lobed Recordings. Purposeful Availments subscription CD series in 2002. And Nightly Trembling was released way back in 1999 in an edition of 33 copies, all given away for free! Thats some spiritual shit right there. Combined with a never-before-released extended piece called Punish the Chasm with Wings from pre-millennial days and youve got yourself a deep, DEEP box set, crammed into a double CD. Rich with excursions to exotic musical climes and rhythmic with prayerful chants from the dark shadows of the earth, RTZ uses strings and bells, riffs both warm and icy, glowing lead guitars, massed voices and the pure, open air for its mantras and rituals. As the title alludes, these old sounds were forged in that bastion of personal expression, the four-track recorder. When a man can record a few feet from his bed, he becomes more inclined to render his nocturnal intuitions. And when that man is Ben Chasny, he can use those remastered (but still good and dusty) early recordings to attain the ultimate goal. We should all be so lucky. Oh wait, we are -- now that weve got RTZ forever, and more." -Drag City

Title: Shelter from the Ash
Format: LP

Price: $16.00
"Shelter From The Ash features a most fluid combination of electric and acoustic Six Organs of Admittance styles. Chasny went into the studio with the songs both in his mind and also demoed out, a different way of working than in previous sessions. Sure, improvisations were still a big part of the sound; within the song structures, they create dynamic sparks from the other side of the inspiration. Additionally (if you must know), standard tuning played a part for the first time in history - but dont worry, this doesnt mean that Six Organs of Admittance has come in from the drone-storm - far from it! The man who was once Torn By Wolves in an unknown key is now Coming To Get You, no matter what it takes - with a tuning any man could play, but few would use as he does." -Drag City. LP version.

"Its almost 1980. Soho, New York, is fertile with young, no-wave punks getting sharper and increasingly angular: Branca, DNA, Teenage Jesus, Contortions, Suicide, et al, as well as the groups they would spawn. Coveted and revered bands for many today, this music was peripheral at the time. Unheard by most save for the underbelly, these were artists living free and dirty, trying to outdo each other. Within the periphery of this periphery, SOCIAL CLIMBERS made sounds that were of their environs yet remarkably unique, leaving an indelible stamp on the scene while somehow managing to slither undetected out of all the history books. A downtown New York art band as much as any other, Social Climbers also claimed midwestern roots and actual musicianship that many of their contemporaries lacked, and in trade dismissed and essentially protested the snotty pretensions that drove many others within the scene. Social Climbers are an absolute post-punk blueprint: fat bass (often two), guitar, drum machine (dubbed "the monkey"), feverish vocals, and organ. Their lone, self-titled album is agitated and impossibly wild, yet danceable and composed.  Gulcher Records initially released the album as a triple 7-inch, and the band embarked on a busy performance schedule before disbanding in 1982." -Drag City

Title: Mister Lonely: Music From A Film By Harmony Korine OST
Format: CD
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $14.00
"When Harmony Korine started the production for his film Mister Lonely back in 2006, he asked two of his favorite artists to send him music to accompany the images and scenes he was putting together. They were busy, so fuck em, they get no ink here -- but both Jason Spaceman and Sun City Girls were actually his favorites anyway. Some of the sounds these two formidable musicals acts made comprise the all-new soundtrack album, Mister Lonely -- Music From A Film By Harmony Korine. Korines previous films have found their truths in unblinking realities cross-cut with surreal images, exposing an emotional core that remains elusive after the movie is over -- ennui, delight, disgust, celebration... soft-core snuff porn? Mister Lonely subtly heightens all these effects with a narrative involving celebrity impersonators searching for a place where they just can be themselves and nuns who have discovered a new way to fly. The soundtrack for Mister Lonely is deceptively minimal -- a guitar or piano line that blinks past repetition and blushes into something grander; a motif reappearing under new auspices; link pieces that become spotlight moments, densely worked-out, stars in their own right. Classic soundtrack sounds are modern and nostalgic, which may make the progressive tilt of Mister Lonely 2008s #1 dark-horse chart-topper! Working independently and never collaborating (would you believe in studios right next door to each other? How about in same studio during different hours of the day?), Jason Spaceman and Sun City Girls employ an instrumental approach for the sounds here, with one or two chanted exceptions. Their music conspires in an exquisite corpse-like fashion -- without knowing what the other was doing, theyve each brought half a body to the film, supplying the apparitional and austere sounds of a world in which everyone is something theyre not, i.e. the people they dream of being."-Drag City

"At the end of the 1960s, FREDDY DENGLER was a veteran of the club circuit in his native Pennsylvania. Inspired in his boyhood by the decaying glamour of his fathers swing-era nightclub and then again in adolescence by the ubiquitous charm of The Beatles, hed taken up the guitar as a teenager. This led to bands, and before long, Freddy was playing regular gigs with a group called THE OTHER SIDE. Amidst the hard work of rock and roll were a couple of recording sessions, but unfortunately for Freddy, his band mates didnt share his enthusiasm for writing new material. By 1972, Freddy was in Florida and looking for a band to join. He eventually landed with an outfit named CYCLE, playing hits of the day and fronting the group with his frenetic stage presence. When that band broke on the rocks of mid-70s decadence, Freddy decided he needed a new approach: original songs, sung by an alterego he dubbed FREDERICK MICHAEL ST. JUDE. Shooting for the singles market, he wrote the material for Here Am I, then went looking for a company to back him. In the summer of 1976, he found SRS International Recording Studios. A few demos later, they were convinced to go all the way and cut a whole album with Freddy for their Soul Deep label. Inspired by Bowie and one of Bowies own heroes, Anthony Newley, Freddys own crooning occasionally has the reedy warble of Paul Williams, but with the backing of a moving, grooving southern house band that verges the material toward the sort of pop music of Scepterera B. J. Thomas. Freddy laid the tracks quickly; SRS personnel added strings and then, without his further input, overdubbed further, bringing an additional production edge with synthesizers and notably the robotic beat to the song "Love You Anyway," that left Freddy "shocked and awed" when he heard the finished record. In the end, SRS and their Soul Deep label were deep-sixed in sudden and complete fashion; the Frederick Michael St. Jude album went into the world without solid representation and Freddys further musical endeavors were limited to a single in the mid-80s. Here is a pristine reproduction of the wild sounds of Here Am I. Freddys vigorous delivery, sensitive-man lyrics and the moogy synth touches make the album an unique and notable entry from its era." -Drag City.

"As of 1981, a sea-change was signaled with the BUZZCOCKs break-up, PETE SHELLEYs subsequent solo career and energy going to other projects. However, even as these events were unfolding, recordings were made on a porta-studio at Petes place that further realized the Groovy direction. After the pubs closed, Pete brought back a motley crew of usual suspects and special guests, broke out the synths, drums and what-have-yer attitude, resulting in a wealth of additional material that provided private listening pleasure for the Groovy alumni over the years. Culled from FRANCIS COOKSON tapes, these pieces make a fourth Groovy installment entitled STRANGE MEN IN SHEDS WITH SPANNERS that features a bent towards more disciplined rhythm pieces scored with a very purposeful array of synthetic sounds-truly the lost next new wave of Groovy, finally crashing on our ready shores in 2011." -Drag City.

Title: Fajar Di Atas Awan
Format: Double LP
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $20.00
"Drag City is pleased to reintroduce the sound of Suarasama to the world. Fajar Di Atas Awan was first released by Radio France Internationale (RFI) in 1998, and the title track appeared on a Smithsonian Folkways compilation in 2000. This release is the first U.S. issue of the entire album and its first-ever release on LP anywhere. Suarasama is a group of many members, mostly ethnomusicological musicians. Founded in 1995 by Irwansyah Harahap and Rithaony Hutajulu, they are based in Medan City in North Sumatra, Indonesia. Suarasama plays contemporary music, exploring conceptually or instrumentally the sounds of African, Middle Eastern, Indian, Sufi Pakistani, Eastern European and Southeast Asian and particularly Sumatran traditions. Arranging this diversity of sounds and instrumentation, Suarasama come up with more than the sum of their parts; music that mitigates the absurd generalization in the name world music with an organic approach. This organic quality is deeply compelling; the quiet beauty and simple intensity of Fajar Di Atas Awan express the albums title (Dawn Over The Clouds) with a clarity that belies the complexity of the groups compositional methods. Faith is a theme of the lyrics, which even when not translated or understood, convey their essences with a meditative, prayerful approach, often using multi-part harmonies that indicate at (and create in the listener) higher ecstasies. Following a century of multi-cultural consolidation resulting in countries comprised of a multitude of different tribes, a group like Suarasama is inevitable; rather than isolating their Sumatran identity within the larger mosaic of Indonesia, they explore the meeting points of their music with the sounds of neighbor cultures, finding a harmony in the confusion. Theyre not the first -- were reminded of Sandy Bull, John Fahey, the Radha Krsna Temple, the collaborations of Ravi Shankar and André Previn, even our own Ghost and Six Organs of Admittance." -Drag City

Price: $25.00
"The hippie groundswell of the late 60s left a lot of young people on the road to self-discovery in the new decade of the 1970s. Some were true "dropouts," but there were also a number of artisans and talented people out there, footloose yet fascinated with the workings of the world and determined to make something of the pieces theyd been given. THESE TRAILS echoes back to us from Hawaii, and specifically the world of the nature cult there. Hawaiis (comparatively) unspoiled wilderness bore great fascination to the gentle young people of the west coast back in those days. Musicians as diverse as The Beach Boys, Merrell Fankhauser, Sky Saxon, Dan Hicks and Ry Cooder all drew vibes and inspiration from the Hawaiian mystique and music-but These Trails gains distinction having been made by everyday-people-type inhabitants of the islands. Hiking, swimming and surfing were the auspices under which MARGARET MORGAN and PATRICK COCKETT first met. They were local kids, whod grown up on the island of Kauai. Theyd both been studying native Hawaiian music and their shared interests and island upbringing inspired them to write and play new music together. By the time this music got to tape, a greater environment had been created with the addition of DAVE CHOYs ARP synthesizer, Uruguayan CARLOS PARDEIROs guitar and sitar, and the soft rhythm of ipu, Hawaiis traditional percussion. The music of These Trails is a psychedelic bridging of folk musics that has a natural and melodic flow and a somber, spiritual air. These Trails was never really a band; it was an album of music. It wasnt pressed in any great numbers and created only a few ripples locally when it was released in 1973. Nonetheless, it was a powerful expression that stands with up other recently-discovered heroes of the private-press world, such as Linda Perhacs and Gary Higgins, whose singular musical endeavors stand with the best of what the hippified 1970s had to offer." -Drag City

Title: Corkys Debt To His Father
Format: CD
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $13.50
"Mayo Thompsons until now ultra-rare solo album. The album was produced in Houston, Texas in 1970 by Thompson, Frank Davis and Roger Rocket Romano for the short-lived but nonetheless legendary Texas Revolution label of Walt Andrus. Though pressed and advertised in the pages of Rolling Stone, the demise of the label meant the album went largely undistributed until the mid 1980s when Glass Records (London) gave it its first proper release. Coming as the sun set on the first psychedelic rock era, Corkys Debt evokes the early days of acoustic blues, but is already in the maelstrom from which punk rock would emerge just a few years later. The set features innovative performances by some of Houstons finest musicians of the time playing eleven songs by Thompson - one with Frederick Barthelme, with whom he started The Red Crayola. They represent a broad range of expressive manners and forms. Made to stand with the finest comparable work of the period, Corkys Debt shows Thompson at his most accessible. Unique ballads, blues, rock and love songs flow one to another with style, grace and intensity, and the handling of diverse popular-music idioms and language that characterize his more widely known work in The Red Crayola are also to be found. The line between genius and madness is very thin." - Drag City.

"One of the great Drag City releases (and one of the great American music solo albums) finally on vinyl again." - FE. "In 1970, Mayo Thompson (once-and-future leader of The Red Krayola) recorded an album entitled Corkys Debt To His Father. Walt Andrus Texas Revolution label released the record -- but just barely, selling a few hundred LPs with no promotion to speak of. The copies that made it into shops became the treasured objects of taste-makers around the globe -- which made Corkys Debt To His Father an influential record down the years. As punk rock, new wave, post-punk and all the rest came along, it was inevitable that this lost classic of independent music would be discovered by a wider audience. In 1988, the album was reissued on the UK Glass Records imprint but went out-of-print again in short order. Then in 1994, Drag City brought Corkys Debt To His Father back to the USA, as well as to the CD format for the first time. Additionally, a third pressing of the vinyl was made. The CD has been a perennial favorite ever since -- but after just a few months of robust sales, the LP artwork and jackets were destroyed in a fire, thus putting the end to the life of Corkys Debt To His Father on vinyl once again. A fast fourteen years later, its our pleasure to bring this classic of two-sided entertainment back to the table (the turntable, that is) with a special limited-edition pressing of Corkys Debt To His Father. Wrapped in a jacket that recalls the halcyon days of solid LP dominance, this new pressing comes with a 7" single featuring the instrumental Woof, which was recorded at the same sessions but not released until The Red Krayolas 2004 compilation CD Singles. The B-side of this single is a never-before heard take on John Cages 433" played by fellow traveller Sergei McUgly."-Drag City

Yes, if you have one of the hundred or so copies of the original UK private press (with the hand-spray-painted cover, then you are probably a millionaire), or you purchased the ultra-limited Shadoks label reissue with EP in 2001, or the Gaarden records reissue of said reissue (if not, pressing two is still available, folks), there is still more! "A little bit of history is a dangerous thing. How then would a present-day acolyte of punk rocks strict regimen explain how Pete Shelly launched an avant-garde DIY label while riding high on the British charts and touring internationally back in 1979 and 80? Loving the art of records and their wayward appeal, it was only natural for Shelley and Francis Cookson to conceive Groovy Records as a way to make some truly freaky (and decidedly un-punk rock) records, and do as much of the work of making the records themselves as they could. These releases represent some of the farthest-out sessions on the wild-to-begin-with late-70s Manchester scene. That three of these four albums were released in the space of one big year, 1980 the one real year of Groovy Records existence, is further testament to the swirl of passions in swiftly morphing times. Now for the first time ever, these four aural tomes are collected together for CD release with all original packaging included in miniature (plus an exclusive Shelley interview!) -- so what are you waiting for? "A collection of Scottish recordings by ALAN LOMAX, 1951-57, compiled by ALASDAIR ROBERTS. In the summer of 1951, Alan Lomax made his first trip to Scotland on the recommendations of folksinger Ewan MacColl and poet, song-collector Hamish Henderson. Traveling through the Scottish Lowlands, Lomax and Henderson recorded pipe tunes, childrens games, Robert Burns compositions and dozens of ballads from farm laborers, fishwives, and the Scottish Traveling folk. Lomax wasnt just impressed by the variety of the countrys traditional music, he was astounded by the depth of the Scots knowledge and appreciation of it. Whaur the Pig Gaed on the Spree commemorates the 60th anniversary of Lomaxs first Scottish recordings and acknowledges their profound effect on Scotlands folk revival.Curated by Roberts and produced in collaboration with the Alan Lomax Archives Global Jukebox label, the record is a startlingly diverse portrait of Lowland traditional music and song: from gentle to rumbustious, hilarious to heartbreaking. Format: Book
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $40.00
"White Glove Test: Louisville Punk Flyers 1978-1994 is a rich visual history of an ephemeral and overlooked art form: the DIY concert poster. Beautiful, funny, and profane, the collection of more than 700 flyers compiled here vividly represents the golden age of this fugitive street art, revealing a neglected facet of punks expressive force. Clipped, collaged, and photocopied, meticulously hand-painted and lettered, or designed on a glowing computer screen in the early days of desktop publishing, these flyers were outsider broadcasts stuck to phone poles and storefronts, a makeshift gallery installed with staple guns and wheat paste. As a lavishly detailed document of Louisvilles vibrant and diverse music scene, this book offers an insiders view of one seminal communitys rise from bold beginnings to eminent, international status. The images also chart the thriving, interconnected underground that extended well beyond New York and Los Angeles, offering a parallax view of American punk from an influential yet removed location. Assiduously assembled from rare originals, sure to appeal to any fan of independent music in Louisville and beyond, White Glove Test uncovers a previously hidden history of prodigious do-it-yourself production, illustrating a national phenomenon in microcosm and illuminating a vital style of pre-internet social media. Compiles all of Meet My Friend Venom LP, "Walking About" 7", Whats Yours is Mine LP, and the Waiting Room EP. The VENOM P. STINGER retrospective is on! One of the roughest groups of the 80s is back in print on vinyl and for the first time ever on CD, and still nice and hard and rough and wild on either format. File under: punk rock/noise rock/free-of-constraints rock. Comprised of DIRTY THREEs MICK TURNER and JIM WHITE, along with ferocious frontman DUGALD MCKENZIE and bassist ALAN SECHER-JENSEN. Venom P. Stinger attacked in a modified, somewhat streamlined hardcore punk style, with Micks burnt-and-twisted guitar tone setting them apart. Instead of the violent pile-up that occurred in every SICK THINGS (McKenzie and Turners previous group) recording, there was instead something more organized, though coming from unique and indeed, singular corners of approach: post-hardcore with a very individual style." -Drag City.

"Old friends of ours from the late 80s — a pre-Dirty bunch of Australias lowest punks. A feral friend of ours is a feral friend of yours, right? Originally released on LP in 1986.

"Its the 21st century man -- were way past the feudal phase! Yet, somehow, some people still radiate their noble bearing, no matter where they are -- just as certain songs are clearly meant to sing from the turrets still. In this fashion, and with high-collared coat turned up against the cruel wind, White Fence emerge from their high aerie to display a shining array of royal jewels each time they unveil a new pop album to the world. The gliss and glitter that sounds forth from For the Recently Found Innocent has a shine all its own, and for Reasons too. For the Recently Found Innocent is many things -- the fifth White Fence album, the first White Fence album to be recorded outside the bedroom fence (with live drumming!), the first White Fence record to be produced for Drag City. Plus also, a sophomore pump: the second time that Tim Presley and Ty Segall have met to record music (does anyone remember Hair?), this time pure and simply committed in the name of White Fence. Inevitably, the collision at the intersection of all these winding roads is a beautiful pileup of deep impacts, graceful lines and open space embodied in sound, White on White, compacted for your eyes and ears to believe." - Drag City.

Title: S/T
Format: LP

Price: $16.00
"In from the cold is Larry Jon Wilson, with his first album since 1980, an intense masterpiece of his casual performing style. Once upon a time in the 1970s, Larry Jon Wilson released four acclaimed albums and garnered a reputation as one of the best new outlaw country songwriters around alongside such hallowed names as Mickey Newbury, Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark. Starting his career late (learning guitar in 1970, at the age of 30) and leaving it early (ten years later), he walked away from the business, not the music. Signed to Monument Records by Fred Foster on the strength of a letter and a demo cassette, his legacy has been the four albums of deep country soul released between 1975 and 1979, but none of them came as close to the bone as this new, appropriately self-titled album. Larry Jon Wilson has been quietly playing shows on and off in the southern states over the last two decades - but it wasnt until some new friends twisted his arm with recording gear in tow on the 15th floor of a Perdido Key condominium that a new album became a reality. This album stands apart from his 70s recordings. On Larry Jon Wilson, he stands mostly alone, occasionally accompanied by a single fiddle. With the release of Larry Jon Wilson, the world is privy to the Larry Jon Wilson sound, clear and worn, deep and resonant." -Drag City

Title: Borders of My Mind
Format: LP
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $22.00
"The album that initially prompted Clint Simonson of Destijl records to track down MICHAEL YONKERS and get this whole legend thing on wheels was 1973s Borders of My Mind, recorded in the living room of JIM WOEHRLE, Yonkers former bandmate in MICHAEL AND THE MUMBLES and the MICHAEL YONKERS BAND. Woehrle had to quit the MYB shortly before Microminiature Love was recorded, because of his school and work schedule, but the two were fortunately able to make this privately-pressed LP a little ways down the line. The songs were recorded at Jims apartment using a full-track mono, one quarter-inch reel-to-reel tape recorder, using only one bi-directional ribbon microphone. Mic placement was extremely critical, because only this microphone was used to capture Woehrles transcendent piano, Yonkers plaintive guitar playing, and the twos arcing vocal harmonies. Plus, one can hear the very real sounds of the phone ringing and natural reverb, along with the occasional post-production psychedelic flourish-making this an unjustly-unheard classic for lovers of homespun astral folk. Fans of Ed Askew, Fred Neil, Mij, Tim Buckley, and Bill Fay, take note!" - Drag City.

"What is Woo? Woo are two - the brothers Mark and Clive Ives, who in the 1980s made a pair of addictively appealing yet largely unknown records. Their second, Its Cosy Inside, released in 1989, qualifies as some of the most electronic organic music ever made. We hearken back to a friendlier time, the 1970s, when Woo first began recording their relaxing and mysterious mood music, using electronically treated acoustic instruments without pretension, creating a sort of pop music for another universe. This is not to say that WOO were, are, or ever could be precious - far from it, in fact! But it is singular, in the mode of Neu!, Fela, and Ashra - a distinctive beat instantly recognizable to those in the know, and enjoyable by all. Woo have made music for more than 35 years now, much of it specifically designed for healing and meditation, while somehow entirely sidestepping the creative vortex of modern new age music." - Drag City.

Title: When The Past Arrives
Format: LP
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $19.00
"WOO is brothers MARK and CLIVE IVES. Emboldened by the success of the recent reissue of Its Cosy Inside, Mark and Clive had a listen to hundreds of previously unreleased tracks recorded in the 70s and 80s to assemble their first new record in two decades, When The Past Arrives, out in March from Drag City / Yoga Records. With comparisons to Penguin Cafe Orchestra, Animal Collective, Cluster, and Brian Eno, WOOs profile in the world of atemporal music has been growing for years. For the lucky few who know, like Fela, or Neu!, WOO has their own instantly recognizable vibrantly pulsing sound, a quiet sound of comfort and contentment. When The Past Arrives is a collection of deceptively airy jams, addictive, crystalline. Uncut called Its Cosy Inside "the epitome of domestic bliss," and Pitchfork observed the album "stakes itself on the premise that the most cosmic and revelatory experiences youll ever have will all happen between your house and the backyard." - Drag City.

Title: Savage Sons of Ya Ho Wa
Format: LP
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $22.00
"Now that the story of The Source Family is out there, as the subject of an acclaimed book and documentary film (as well as an ongoing series of rare, never-before-released recordings), its time to turn the light back on the records that made this whole thing a story in the first place. In the 1990s, it was a revelation to discover that there was a series of records made by a hippie cult led by a big Santa Claus-looking guy named Father Yod. It was of further interest that these records werent simple, predictable light-rock recitals about Jesus -- far from it! Instead, they were darkly psychedelic, stream-of-consciousness jams, with Father and the members of his band (usually The Spirit of 76 and YaHoWa13) reaching together for divine transformation, and often finding it, as Father screamed, pounding kettle drums ecstatically, while the band erupted with coils of enlightenment rock, over and over. Records like Penetration, Contraction, To the Principles for the Children, and Im Gonna Take You Home were amazing home-recorded documents, adorned with hand-drawn phrases and logos and grainy color shots of what appeared to be truly magical everyday cult life with Father. Super-crazy, inspiring stuff. Savage Sons of Ya Ho Wa is a record that Father doesnt appear on. Well, he doesnt play on the record, but look on the cover -- Yahowa is still in the drivers seat. Musically, YaHoWa13 go it on their own, with Octavius, Sunflower, Djinn, and Rhythm collaborating with Electron, who supplies powerful lead vocals. Whats here is a collection of powerful rock songs that will echo in your consciousness, like the opening track, Edge of a Dream, and the refrain I want to see/Whats going on. The guttural nature of Electrons vocal sound may recall the name of Beefheart to some, and Electron is occupying the same unconsciousness, free in the communal slipstream, with less blues and more country gospel in his soul. This is one of Isis favorites of the original Source Family releases, and one of ours too. This is its first LP pressing in decades. Features all of the original artwork, including a really far-out inner-sleeve, plus new inserts with reflections from Isis. These emanations from the original Source are pure, uncut spiritual visions from the mid-1970s, not to be missed." - Drag City.

Title: Magnificence In The Memory
Format: LP
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $16.00
"The legendary Father Yod was a wealthy man, with a rich inner life, a family of disciples that loved him, many, many women and seemingly unlimited power. So why at the height of his success, did he choose to spend his time playing rock and roll? Having a band in residency at Father House provided him and all his children with another path to travel in their never-ending search for experience and wisdom. Taking time out from their busy schedule as Fathers students and spiritual seekers in the Source Family, Sunflower, Octavius, Pythias and Djin took instruments in hand and, at a mere gesture from Father, turned up the amps and began tapping into the cosmos. First, they recorded themselves. The energy was good. Equipped by Father with instruments and effects pedals to ensure that they could create music that came from the spheres, their sounds provided spiritual growth to everyone in the Source Family. After a time, Father became the lead singer, as a way to record wisdom in a modern, youth-oriented way, Djin tells us. And YaHoWha 13 was born with Sunflower, Octavius and Djin. The music was recorded at a studio in the Father House on a TEAC 4-track reel-to-reel machine and was released on the Source Familys Higher Key Records label. In a couple short years, nine LPs were created, to be sold at the Source Restaurant and at YaHoWha 13 shows. Much sought-after items today, theyve all been reissued. Even more exciting is the material that wasnt released - enough music to fill over sixty albums, all of them mind-blowers. Skimmed from the riches in Isis Aquarians vaults (by Dave Nuss of the No-Neck Blues Band), the nine tracks on Magnificence in the Memory run the gamut of YaHoWha 13s rainbow of styles, from the whispered funk of Camp of the Gypsies to the screaming and stomping of, well, Camp of the Gypsies. Storming through moments with abandon, Father and his Sons never repeated themselves, committing everything they did to tape in a single take. The capacity of their riffs and grooves to sound like German prog bands of the same era, psychedelic rock bands of several years previous or the as-yet-uncreated avant sounds from the indie rock movement a decade away is testament to their ability to tap the source of human inspiration. Adds Octavius, These cuts will always be a source of inspiration. The songs on Magnificence in the Memory were chosen to provide a non-stop exciting listening experience for Source fans and neophytes alike - and as Sunflower has stated, Fathers music is our legacy and represents the voice of the times." -Drag City

Title: Lovely Gold
Format: LP
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $19.00
"The legend of Michael Yonkers has taken its place among the great stories of underground rock and roll music. Hed been playing rock and roll for nearly forty years when Microminiature Love was finally issued in 2003 (Sire had taken a pass way back in 1968). A thousand noise-rock ears pricked up -- for Yonkers, a reclusive Minneapolis dancer-musician with a handful of self-released records over the years, had seminally prefigured proto-punk/metal/noise through his own brand of amped up garage rock. Since the revelation, Michael has picked up where he left off, exploring blown-out frequencies with collaborators around the globe, and his work has claimed a seat next to immortals like The Fugs, Velvet Underground, Sonic Youth and even ol Jimi. What a lot of folks STILL dont know is that Michael put aside his hand-built fuzz boxes and bellowing vocal style in the 1970s to record and self-release some truly curious albums of lilting loner-folk music, including Grimwood, Goodby Sunball and Michael Lee Yonkers. Of this holy trio of albums, only Grimwood has yet seen reissue. Throughout this time, Yonkers layered madrigal-like vocals, simple acoustic guitars, and used electricity in only the most subtle of ways - all to serve his somber, mesmerizing songs. This brings us to Lovely Gold. Planned as the fourth LP in his 70s trilogy, it was never released - a true crime, because it is an exotic work of homespun brilliance. Recorded in 1977 on a four-channel tube type tape recorder that Michael built himself by combining parts of other machines, it is perhaps his most multi-faceted solo album. The trademark Yonkers chug appears (though more stripped-down and dreamlike) and even some spraying acidic guitar on the title track, but the sweeping choral voice arrangements on gorgeous hymns like Will It Be are entirely unique and indeed lovely creations. Whats more, while digging through his archives Michael located previously lost cuts intended for the album, including the harrowing, near-Krautrock glide of Nevermore. Utilizing original photos and the exact layout specs/fonts/and notes of the planned 1977 Lovely Gold release, a lost classic at last becomes available -- once again! How many more reside in the Yonkers vaults? Only time (and Michael) will tell..." - Drag City.

Title: Michael Lee Yonkers
Format: LP
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $22.00
"Theres yet another musical color revealed on the uber-rare private press, Michael Lee Yonkers, which was home-recorded in 1971-72, while MICHAEL YONKERS was working in an unheated, hundred year-old warehouse. He ran the forklift and drove the truck for the company, hauling extremely heavy loads of industrial surplus and scrap metal. His co-workers almost exclusively listened to country and western music, which inspired him to create and perform an oddly countrified set on weekends, when he would play in coffeehouses and at house parties. Yonkers would do an acoustic set of original "country" and "rock" music for the first part, then he would get out an "electronic music machine" that he had built himself and play "electronic music" (quotes all added by Michael himself). Michael Lee Yonkers is a recording of some of the "country" songs he was doing at the time, as well as a few songs he wrote for the children at the house parties (like "Mrs. Jennings Fruit Fly Farm," recorded live, where you can hear the kids going nuts). The tracks were recorded on a variety of tube-type, reel-to-reel tape machines, which give them a unique analogue sound that begs comparisons to outsider hillbillies like Peter Grudzien, Holy Modal Rounders and The Legendary Stardust Cowboy, as well as outlaws like Townes Van Zandt and Kris Kristofferson." - Drag City.

Title: Recurring Dreams
Format: LP
Label: Drag City
Country: USA
Price: $19.00
"Matthew Youngs genre-bending, acclaimed 1986 release Travelers Advisory reappeared as a reissue on Drag City/Yoga in 2010 and quickly sold out. We now return to Youngs first effort, Recurring Dreams, dating back to 1981 and the apex of the Eno/Berlin schools influence over a myriad of American followers. Young created eight EMS/Rhodes pieces solo, subtly weaving in variable-speed Revox manipulation of traditional rock instrumentation with the lightest of touches. As anyone who has heard Travelers Advisory already knows, Matthew Young could never be a mere imitator. What all too often amounted to predictable schtick in the field of early 80s home electronica, Young made personal, delicate, discreet, and discrete. Wordlessly illustrating its titles -- Version, Inversion, The Forest Of Lilacs, and Mistral (a strong, cold, northwesterly wind), Young conjures vivid, progressive tones of the unknown. Recurring Dreams requires repeat listenings to fully reveal its Bonsai-like qualities. Fans of Erik Satie, JD Emmanuel, private-issue new age or the more placid side of minimal synth should take note of this one." - Drag City.

Title: Travelers Advisory
Format: LP
Label: Drag City

"Mixing a hammered dulcimer and a drum machine makes no logical sense. Taking your lyrics from instruction manuals is not a good idea. Covering Michael Hurley in 1986 is about as out of step with the times as you can get. And yet... somehow this 25-year-old 12th-century/folk/electronic album feels perfectly up to date and dare we say...cooler than anything else youll hear this year! Drag City and Yoga Records proudly present Matthew Youngs Travelers Advisory. Recorded at home, made and distributed at the end of the first age of vinyl, Travelers Advisory is a startlingly original work: an utterly unique mix of vocals, dulcimer, banjo, Casio synths, and electronic drums, Matthew played every instrument & recorded every note. A graphic designer by trade, he too created the album artwork. Aside from a few traditionals and one cover version, Young composed everything. The haunting song Young chose to cover, Werewolf, comes from another original, Michael Hurley, approximately 20 years before Hurley came back into fashion with the kids. The striking blend of electronic & traditional should appeal to fans of Arthur Russell; another pioneer responsible for an unlikely wedding of drum machine and cello. Opener Objects in Mirror does indeed evoke Russells intimate home recordings compiled on the posthumous Calling Out Of Context. So much private press music comes off as the result of some sort of vanity -- private press is often nothing more than code for vanity press. Hearing Travelers Advisory, one is struck by the vivid image of an artist who is full of ideas and learning how to express them as he goes along out of a sense of necessity. Young is the receiver and transmitter of strange ideas drifting in the ether, and renders them quite understandable to any open-minded listener." -Drag City
