Artist: AKIYAMA/TOM CARTER/CHRISTIAN KIEFER, TETUZI
Title: The Darkened Mirror
Format: LP
Label: Monotype
Country: Japan
Price: $22.00
"Tetuzi Akiyama: guitar, electronics, viola, and self-made instrument player. Born in Tokyo, April 13, 1964. Tetuzi Akiyama is a highly unique and experimental guitarist heavily applying free improvisation and noise. Besides guitar, he also plays electronics, viola, and self-made instruments. Akiyama became an enthusiastic hard rock fan when he was 11 years-old, and started playing electric guitar at the age of 13. Later, he also came to be very interested in free improvisation and classical music. Tom Carter: born barely south of the Mason-Dixon line, and just in time for the Summer of Love, Tom Carter led a decidedly non-hippy existence being shuffled around various farm and mining towns in Maryland and Ohio by his newspaperman father, before finally making his way to Texas in 1985, just in time to watch all the good hardcore bands die. Already obsessed with American pre-punk and British post-punk, Carter dove into the lysergically spiked musical waters of Texas with both feet, augmenting rudimentary guitar skills with unreliable instruments, cranky analog electronics, and disintegrating practice amps. Over the ensuing decades, he managed to forge his evolving ideas of complete tonal immersion (and the quest for the perfect fuzz tone) into a layered sonic toolkit of rough beauty and unrefined proficiency. Best known for his work with acclaimed iconoclasts Charalambides, which he co-founded with Christina Carter in 1991. Christian Kiefer: began his life in the arts through a fascination with the written word. This fascination is reflected in a long line of publications. His poetry and fiction have appeared in many of Americas most prestigious literary journals. He is the author of three novels, the most recent of which is Out of Iron." - Monotype

Artist: DRUMM, KEVIN
Title: The Back Room
Format: LP
Label: Monotype
Country: Poland
Price: $24.00
“Kevin Drumm is a Chicago-based experimental artist and one of the most important musicians in the electroacoustic noise scene. During his career he has worked with great improvisers such as Mats Gustafsson, producer Jim ORourke and saxophonist Ken Vandermark. Kevin DrummsImperial Distortion (HOS 134LP) and Sheer Hellish Miasmah (EMEGO 053LP) are must-hear albums of contemporary avant-garde. The Back Room is a vinyl reissue of a previously self-released album. Two years ago, Drumm prepared by himself 100 copies of a CD-R full of intensive noise. The whole conception from the beginning sounded like something recorded not for a CD but for an LP. There are two parts: one consists of three very short, high-pitched pieces. Another part is built with two long compositions where you can hear and even feel many shades of analog electronic noise, with all of its brutal beauty.” - Monotype.

Artist: PHILLIPS, DAVE & HIROSHI HASEGAWA
Title: Insect Apocalypse
Format: CD
Label: Monotype
Country: Poland
Price: $17.00
"Dave Phillips and Hiroshi Hasegawa met in 1997 at an event at Tokyos Antiknock venue featuring Incapacitants, Masonna, C.C.C.C., and Schimpfluch Gruppe. Geographical distance allowed for few connections in the years following, but when they happened, they were always profound. In 2012 the Swiss LUFF festival initiated a Japanese edition of their festival, and asked for Swiss-Japanese collaborations. Naturally, Phillips and Hasegawa reconnected, first at a studio in Kōenji, then as a live collaboration at the LUFF event in Tokyo. The resulting recordings were analyzed and processed and enhanced with additional material, and the result is Insect Apocalypse. Dave Phillips: field recordings; Hiroshi Hasegawa: filters/effects. Recorded on April 26, 2012, at Afterbeat Studio, Tokyo, and on April 29, 2012, at LUFF Japan festival, SuperDeluxe, Tokyo. Additional material recorded by Hiroshi Hasegawa in July 2013 in Tokyo. Additional material recorded by Dave Phillips between 2001 and 2011 in the jungles of Vietnam, Ecuador, Thailand, and Indonesia. Edited by Dave Phillips, December 2013 - February 2014, in Zürich." - Monotype.

Label: Monotype
Country: Poland
Price: $23.00

Earlier releases include Witch (recorded in 1990, released in 1993), & That Dead Horse (recorded in 1994, released in 2010), Always Already (2011), and the retrospective compilation Leslie Winer &c. As of 2015, she is co-editor and co-executor for the estate of beat writer Herbert Huncke. (1), by Winer and Carl Michael von Hausswolff, is Winers first full-length original release to be recorded since 1994. CM von Hausswolff divides his time between the worlds of music and visual art. His records, which he has been releasing since 1979, have been released by such labels as Radium 226.05, Ash International, Raster-Noton, Laton, iDEAL, and Touch. He curates Freq_Out, a collaborative sound installation shown in Paris, Berlin, Stockholm, Marrakesh, and beyond, with such artists as JG Thirlwell, Finnbogi Petursson, Jana Winderen, and Christine Ödlund. He makes films with Thomas Nordanstad and music with Martin Rössel (as Gomila Park), Jean-Louis Huhta and Graham Lewis (as Ocsid), and Joachim Nordwall and Jason Lescalleet (as ENOUGH!!!). Leslie Winer and Carl Michael von Hausswolff met in 2011 in Lisbon, Portugal, via Philip Marshall, co-owner of The Tapeworm. They decided to make a vocal/electronic music collaboration just for fun, with no intentions to have it on any kind of phonogram. Time proved different! Text and vocals by Winer; music by von Hausswolff, except for "Talked to some of them," which features music by von Hausswolff and Nordanstad, from their 2009 film Electra, Texas 2008. Recorded, mixed, and treated in Vigny, France, and Stockholm, Sweden, 2012-13." - Monotype.

Artist: WOOLEY/C. SPENCER YEH/AUDREY CHEN/TODD CARTER, NATE
Title: NCAT
Format: LP
Label: Monotype
Country: Japan
Price: $22.00
"Blurring the lines between electronic and acoustic music, as well as composition versus improvisation, NCAT is a unique quartet consisting of an improvising trio whose music has been mutated and structured in post-production by its fourth member. The bulk of the musical material on this LP was recorded at STEIM in Amsterdam, during a residency of cellist/vocalist Audrey Chen, violinist/vocalist C. Spencer Yeh, and trumpet player Nate Wooley. After sifting through the collected recordings from the week, the trio sent selected pieces off to Todd Carter of TV Pow for mixing and mastering. What they received a few weeks later was a music totally transformed, as Carter had taken the piece and reconfigured them into stunning works of electro-acoustic composition." - Monotype
