Artist: AROMA DI AMORE
Title: Onverdeeld
Format: Double CD
Label: Onderstroom
Country: Belgium
Price: $28.00
“Ignored by the masses, loved by the underground, never simple, always unique: since its first period of activity in the mid 1980s, Belgian band Aroma di Amore has been revered as the cult group of Flanders. In 2009 the band made its comeback, performing several gigs in Belgium and releasing Ongehoord (OS 011LP), an LP of unreleased and rare tracks, and Samizdat (OS 020CD), a CD of new songs. Carried by a deep bass, typically cold new wave drums, biting guitar riffs, and a shamanic voice, they make music thats both subtle and raw, with the occasional flavor of absolute madness. Over the years, bass players, a saxophonist, and lots of other musicians have come and gone, but the core of the band consists of Fred Angst on guitar, Lo Meulen on bass, and Elvis Peeters on vocals. The double CD Onverdeeld is an anthology of more than a quarter-century of musical output, containing almost all of the tracks that the band released on LP, as well as a few live tracks and four previously unreleased songs. Includes a 16-page booklet with pictures by Eric Didden, an extensive biography, and the extraordinary lyrics of Elvis Peeters. Mastered by Gerry Vergult (aka Fred Angst). Limited to 500 copies.” - Onderstroom.

Artist: CHEIRON
Title: Land After Life
Format: LP
Label: Onderstroom
Country: Belgium
Price: $22.00
“After the re-discovery of Tranquil Eyes 1985 Walkscassette in 2012 (OS 015LP) and the 2014 release ofFrozen Ducks work (OS 023LP), OnderStroom Records presents another dazzling project from Lex Grauwen. Cheiron is a collaboration between Grauwen, who plays all the instruments and produced all the music, and José van Waveren, who sings distinctively. Land After Life aims for the dancefloor with its high-energy minimal synth and electro stylings. In the mid-80s Lex Grauwen was asked to participate in the Pas de Deux LP (1985), a legendary new wave compilation album featuring Bene Gesserit, Algebra Suicide, and Psyclones. Grauwen asked his high school sweetheart, José van Waveren, to join up for a few songs. "Land After Life" was chosen for the compilation and, years later, took on a life of its own on the internet. "Serenity World," recorded during the same sessions, is equally spellbinding and beautiful. It was released in an edited mix on the 1987 Lembrasse compilation cassette (Top Tape). The third song recorded, "Finally Free Four," is a previously unreleased solo composition by van Waveren. Grauwen and van Waveren had been making music before, though, and one of those older tracks is "No Trace," from 81-82. Shortly after Pas de Deux, they tried to record some more tracks, but the demos were never really finished. A while later Grauwen asked Paul Oosterbaan of Tranquil Eyes and Ruud Braumullerof Beatnik Love Affair to help finish these tracks. The results are "Your Life, Your Body" (also a van Waveren solo piece) and "Ping Pong," the last recorded track. In the 2000s, van Waveren began performing as singer-songwriter devoted to French chanson.” - Onderstroom.

Artist: DE BRASSERS
Title: 1979-1982
Format: CD & DVD
Label: Onderstroom
Country: Belgium
Price: $31.00
"2010 release. De Brassers are one of the most notorious bands in Belgian new wave/punk history. With their no-nonsense attitude, they scared the shit out of the local Catholic community of Hamont. De Brassers were a local mixture of the Sex Pistols (in the lowest gear) and Joy Division (they always performed a cover version of Joy Divisions "Shadowplay"), combining a criticism of bureaucracy and politics with experiences of psychological and existential tensions. The doomed sound they produced tells a lot about the dark atmosphere of the late 70s and early 80s: the fear of atomic bombs, Cold War pessimism, police violence against squatters, the first cases of AIDS, and the grim years of Reagan & Thatcher. The CD and DVD presented here take you back to that time. All tracks from En Toen Was Er Niets Meer, their first 7", and the self-titled 12" are here, as well as rare and unreleased tracks taken from live performances and the cassette Levend. If youre in for a raw slice of Belgian history, let De Brassers immerse you in a cold wave of punk. This release also contains a documentary about De Brassers. Shot in black and white, plus color by Chromasoom (Jan Weynants). Over 50 minutes of live footage and a great amount of interviews with (ex-) band members and other people who were involved. English subtitles included." - Onderstroom.

Title: Live at Doornroosje
Format: LP
Label: Onderstroom
Country: Belgium
Price: $24.00
"Recordings of a stand-out gig at Doornroosje in Nijmegen (NL). By 1982, De Brassers had been playing in almost every small public space or squad in the area and logically they had gathered a cult following. Doornroosje was/is the club where underground music groups performed before they became well-known, especially in the 80s, which were an interesting period with Joy Division, Nick Cave, and many local punk/new wave bands hitting the stage. Here we find De Brassers at the peak of their powers performing "Pijn," "They Wanted Us Away," "En Toen Was Er Niets Meer," the Joy Division cover "Shadowplay" and six other raw punk/synth/wave tracks. Live, they sound even more real and raw. De Brassers are one of the most notorious bands in Belgian new wave/punk history. With their no-nonsense attitude, they scared the shit out of the local Catholic community of Hamont. De Brassers were a local mixture of the Sex Pistols (in the lowest gear) and Joy Division, combining a criticism of bureaucracy and politics with experiences of psychological and existential tensions. The doomed sound they produced tells a lot about the dark atmosphere of the late 70s and early 80s: the fear of atomic bombs, Cold War pessimism, police violence against squatters, the first cases of AIDS, and the grim years of Reagan and Thatcher. Pressed at Handle With Care and housed in a matte-varnished cover sleeve. Mastered by Anders Peterson. Edition of 300 copies."- Onderstroom.

Artist: FROZEN DUCKS
Title: Frozen Ducks
Format: LP
Label: Onderstroom
Country: Belgium
Price: $24.00
"Frozen Ducks were the two brothers Hans Grauwen and Lex Grauwen. The short-lived duo had Hans behind the mic and playing synths, Lex also played synths and did the production of the tracks. The nine electro/new wave songs sound a lot like Tranquil Eyes 1985 Walks album and this release can in many ways be seen as the accompanying release to that album. The line-up of the bands is almost the same, the bass and the overall production is just as deep, rich and poignant; only this time the drum patterns are more apparent and the sphere is much darker with lyrics about a troubling childhood and a vague view on what the future will bring. During the mid-80s Hans & Lex produced 15 tracks of early electro/new wave songs of which only two ever got released. "Beginnings" and "Lost Freedom" were released on the legendary Dutch experimental compilations Contactdisc 4 and Contactdisc 5, which included bands such as X-Ray Pop, Twilight Ritual, Tranquil Eyes, Kapotte Muziek, and De Fabriek. All other tracks on this album are previously-unreleased and come from the vaults of Lex Grauwen. With much dedication and joy, these tracks have been unearthed and compiled into this posthumous album. A true pleasure to listen to and a must for every minimal synth, new wave and lo-fi Italo disco fan. Some words by Lex Grauwen: "Even though Hans and me had been recording since 1970, things didnt really start out until 1980, when the Korg MS-20 synthesizer entered my living-room. A living-room that would soon turn into a studio. A MFB 501 drum-machine was added, an Electro Harmonix Instant Replay sampler, bucket-brigade delays, chorus, flanger, phaser, reel-to-reel recorders, cassette-decks, a Portastudio, and of course, guitars, bass, sitar, and percussion. The tracks made were usually not destined to be Tranquil Eyes, Frozen Ducks or Cheiron. This usually depended on who came by and who was in the mood to sing. Hans was a steady visitor, who lived close by, so, he did a lot of the singing. I played all the instruments, often helped by friends such as Ruud Braumuller, and did the production. Not everything Hans and I recorded fell into the line of Frozen Ducks. We did different styles as well. Hans could do a fine falsetto, too, so we recorded some tracks leaning more towards 1960s psychedelia. That project was named Lemon Dust and is all unreleased. So, throughout the 80s and 90s we kept buying lots of equipment, recorded and re-recorded our material, until it slowly came to a halt. Of course there had been the Contactdisc releases, but there never was any feedback, no reviews, nothing." Frozen Ducks was never a band as such, they never performed. Hans was not the kind of guy to be on stage. Way too shy, introverted, troubled and burdened. The lyrics say it all." - Onderstroom.

Artist: HUMAN FLESH
Title: Second Hand Emotions and Half-Forgotten Feelings
Format: LP
Label: Onderstroom
Country: Belgium
Price: $19.00
"2011 release. Human Flesh is the long-lived project of Alain Neffe. The tracks presented here are all unreleased songs recorded in the mid-80s. With a wide range of unconventional instruments, Neffe and his compadres create their own dark and twisted world. With a lot of improvisation and cracked-up minimal synth, this is a great album. Besides synths and rhythm boxes, we hear zither, bells, strings, tarang, ocarina, Yugoslavian vocals, reel-to-reel tape scratch, and more. Limited edition of 400 copies. Cover-sleeve and insert by Alain Neffe." - Onderstroom.

Artist: MARTIAL CANTEREL
Title: Austerton
Format: LP
Label: Onderstroom
Country: Belgium
Price: $24.00
"Much-needed re-issue of this privately released 2007 album. Martial Canterels Sean McBride is the progenitor of American cold synth sounds of the 21st century. He began under the moniker Moravagine before he started releasing limited edition cassettes and playing Brooklyn dives as Martial Canterel in 2002. Since then, McBrides bleak intellectual exercises in the dark and danceable have flooded North America and Europe through the frosty fairwaves paved by Pieter Schoolwerths Wierd Records. With an inimitable minimal style merging bright, urgent melodies ornamented and punctuated by the noises of industry and McBrides sonorous, stern vocals, Martial Canterels earlier releases (You Today, Refuge Underneath) have garnered both critical acclaim and a rapidly growing rabid fan base. Sean is also one-half of the duo Xeno & Oaklander together with Miss Liz Wendelbo. The album Austerton consists of some of his earliest work recorded in 2003. The ten minimal synth songs on the LP are reminiscent of music by bands like Dark Day, Snowy Red, A Blaze Colour, League Of Nations, etc. Through the collision of a uniquely humanistic means of production via live analog synthcraft expertly paired with vocals and lyrics that reflect the pitfalls and pleasures of our age, Martial Canterel provides a visceral kick best felt on the dancefloor, amidst a flurry of flesh in motion." - Austerton.

Artist: MENSEN BLAFFEN
Title: Verzameld Werk
Format: CD
Label: Onderstroom
Country: Belgium
Price: $21.00
"Mensen Blaffen was a six-piece band from Aalst, Belgium that excelled at playing postmodern funk and weird rock. Its members were Jan van den Brande (guitar, bass), Mario Segers (bass, synthesizer, percussion), Sylvie Honnay (vocals), Steven Lorie (drums), Ludo Vervliet (bass), Eddy Valk (saxophone), and Pascal Baeyens (guitar, first record). When asked how they would describe their work, the members said, "hardcore-chanson, mixed with ugliness, sweetness and dirty worms in a rotten horse together." The band formed in the early 1980s and participated in the Belgian competition Humos Rock Rally in 1984, where they reached the finals. Mensen Blaffens debut self-titled mini-LP, produced by Jo Bogaert (producer of Technotronics Pump Up the Jam), came out the same year and introduced the bands distinct sound, characterized by a certain playfulness and naiveté, with Dutch lyrics full of sound associations and exclamation marks, Honnays cooing voice, and funky sax and percussion that recalled Defunkt or Lavvi Ebbel. John Peel took notice of the band and gave them some airtime, and they landed supporting gigs for Virgin Prunes, Blurt, and Anne Clark. For their second release, 1986s DUn Seul Coup, Mensen Blaffen enlisted Fred A aka Gerry Vergult (Aroma di Amore) as producer. The mini-LP gave space to Honnays surreal lyrics, sung in French and Dutch, and included such standouts as the swinging "Hippopotame" and the sultry "Kleine Vamp," earning it an enthusiastic review from the venerable Dutch magazine OOR. That same year, the band released Krengen, an EP of rougher and more danceable material. After a slew of performances in Belgium, Holland, Germany, and France, Mensen Blaffen released its sole full-length album, Raven, in 1988. The product of intensive rehearsals, its a tremendous album full of energizing guitar songs with a dark edge, and features production by Theo van Eenbergen (Nasmak, Rollins Band). Sadly enough, Mensen Blaffens final statement didnt receive the attention it deserved. Now, after more than 25 years, OnderStroom Records gets Mensen Blaffens work out there again, in the form of this 80-minute compilation CD. Verzameld Werk collects tracks from Mensen Blaffen (1984), DUn Seul Coup (1986), Krengen (1986), and Raven (1988), and one track from the 1987 compilation From Behind the Bushes. Includes 8-page booklet. Mastered by Equus. Limited to 500 copies." - Onderstroom.

Artist: PALAIS DES BAUZRDS
Title: In the Grassfield
Format: LP
Label: Onderstroom
Country: Belgium
Price: $23.00
“Palais des Bauzards pursued an industrial and electronic variant of the sound that swept into vogue during the first half of the 80s. This compilation digs into the original material provided by the band and offers an amazing selection from start to finish. The sometimes rudimentary though gripping tracks on the first side are emblematic of their early period; for example, "Money" is driven by a screeching rhythm box, distant guitar lines, and a nonchalant voice.Cabaret Voltaire comes to mind. Theyre not afraid to experiment and to explore new horizons ("Lies"). The second side shows a more developed dark wave sound with "In the Grassfield" and "Knowing Too Much," both produced by legendary Belgian producerLudo Camberlin. There are even two dark goth-rock stompers hidden in the selection -- "My Life Is a Sin" and "Eat Out of My Hands." Overall its a broad selection of tracks that show the capability of the band to do something different with the new wave genre. The group was formed in 1983 in the Belgian city of Leuven by Danny Jacobs, Dirk wan Regenmortel, Chris Serré, Frank de Wit, andRudy Stuyckens. In 1983 they released two tracks on the Mask Promotion LP alongside Front 242. In the three following years many of their home-recorded tracks were published on a bunch of cassette labels. Since the beginning of the 21st century, many Palais des Bauzards tracks can be found on playlists around Europe and the USA and are being re-released on compilations, includingUnderground Wave Volume 4 (Walhalla Records, 2014) and Distant Waves (Dead Wax Records, 2014).” - Onderstroom.

Artist: SNOWY RED
Title: The Ultimate Edition 1980-1984
Format: 5 CD Box
Label: Onderstroom
Country: Belgium
Price: $65.00
"2011 release. Tremendous 5CD box by one of the most highly-acclaimed minimal synth bands active during the 1980s. The Snowy Red project started as a one-man band by Micky Mike. With a few synthesizers, a 12/2 mixing desk and a two-track reel-to-reel recorder he created repetitive synth masterpieces in the vein of Suicide and Polyphonic Size. These black synthetic pearls were spread over two albums: the self-titled Snowy Red (1981) and The Right to Die (1982) -- both are included in this box, officially remastered, and with original artwork. When the project was nearing completion, Michael Thiel (the son of Micky) made the discovery we were all waiting for, demo tracks of the first album. Besides proto-versions of "Blood Blood Blood," "Maud Is Dead," and Deep Desire," the main discovery is the 22-minute version of "The Wild Boys": an electronic trip you do not want to end. And theres more. Underground club hit "Breakdown" was released throughout the 80s in several different versions. Included in this box are the 12" and the 7" versions, both featuring the beautiful Carol on vocals. Further down the line on disc four we find Micky Mikes solo version of the track which was first released on Walking After Midnight in 1980. This is an absolutely raw and honest version. Also included are the unreleased tracks "Lies in Your Eyes" and "Red Skies," both excellent additions to the Snowy Red puzzle, and three stripped-down demos made for the Vision album. Very different from the first two releases, the Vision album was Mickys most ambitious effort. With the help of friends (Niki Mono) and the addition of saxophone and Eastern instruments, Micky Mikes talent as a producer was pushed to the limit. Vision conceptualized a total spectacle: there was a video to accompany the album and the live shows were truly theatrical. But even without these visionary additions, the album has a certain grandeur, almost like an electronic opera. In short, this 5CD box is essential stuff for anyone interested in the history of the Belgian minimal synth-god Snowy Red. Digipak CDs are housed in a glossy cardboard box. Includes a 24-page booklet with unseen photos and extensive background information." - Onderstroom.

Artist: SSLEEPING DESIRESS
Title: s/t
Format: LP
Label: Onderstroom
Country: Belgium
Price: $24.00
"While the band has gone through a few lineup changes, Ssleeping Desiress has essentially remained the brainchild of San Francisco-based Gabriel Ramos, who is the sole member on this, the bands debut album. Following the great 2012 A Voice/Sister 7", this album runs along the boundaries between minimal synth, coldwave, and electro with lyrical themes of gentrification, coping with death, artistic drive and confusion, and the ephemeral nature of relationships. Ssleeping Desiress have appeared on numerous new new wave compilations since 2011, but this album takes the project to the next level, kicking off with an echoing voice over repetitive drums and outbursts of synths and guitars before slowly moving toward a more darkwave sound on the second half of the album. Ramos started making solo recordings while living in Portland, Oregon, around 2005. The DIY drive of the city and the live shows that he hosted at his house, often of friends bands from San Francisco, led to a growing fascination and voracious consumption of music. Ramos recalls, "I can really trace it to the first time Spector Protector played at my house and getting a tape afterwards from one of the two members, Eric Davis. That and being freshly exposed to groups like Suicide and Arthur Russell was very inspirational to begin recording music on my own, though it is something I had done fairly aimlessly since high school. I make an effort and try and change my process as much as I can (usually through collaboration) and vary the instrumentation. I try and incorporate a late 70s punk vibe, a marriage of dub and krautrock repetition and cavernous space. Definitely not always successful but that is what is usually running through my head when I create music for this band." Mastered by Michael Romanowski. Graphic design by Luis Mendoza. Limited to 300 copies." - Onderstroom.

Artist: TRANQUIL EYES
Title: Walks
Format: LP
Label: Onderstroom
Country: Belgium
Price: $24.00
"Much needed re-issue of this fantastic and unfortunately overlooked 1985 tape on Stichting Stopcontact. Lex Grauwen and Paul Oosterbaan had worked together for about eight years before they formed Tranquil Eyes in 1982. They decided to turn their back on stage performances and started experimenting with home-taping. Using an array of electronics, Tranquil Eyes recorded a great amount of songs and made a fine selection on Walks, their first and only release. The wonderfully-produced tracks sound a lot like A Blaze Colour and Snowy Red. Minimal synth at its best with a great feel for song structures, melody and occasionally aiming at the dancefloor. If youre at all attuned to the cassette culture of the early years, dont miss out on this one. Lex Grauwen was also in, and produced Frozen Ducks and Cheiron. Lex Grauwen (instruments, vocals and production); Paul Oosterbaan (instruments and vocals). Includes a booklet with song texts, photos, credits and liner-notes. Remastered by Ruud Braumuller. Artwork re-designed by Pieter Eykens. Pressed on 180 gram vinyl in a limited edition of 500 copies." - Onderstroom.

Artist: TWILIGHT RITUAL
Title: The Ritual
Format: LP
Label: Onderstroom
Country: Belgium
Price: $24.00
"First vinyl release of the first ever recordings by Belgian minimal synth masters Twilight Ritual. Originally released in 1982 in a tiny cassette edition, this album has not been heard by many people. The Ritual includes some of their best work, from mysterious dark synthpop songs ("Elegy") to club music ("Webb Men") and the epic 14-minute track "Up to Now." Twilight Ritual is the main project of Geert Coppens and Peter Bonne. During the early 80s they were both involved in many other bands, including Autumn and Linear Movement (both later reissued by Minimal Wave), but Twilight Ritual is by far the most inspired project. The spirit of the band lingers on beneath the work of Autumn through A Split-Second and stands beside the best tracks of bands such as Oppenheimer Analysis and League of Nations. Instruments and production by Peter Bonne. Lyrics and artwork by Geert Coppens. Remastered at Equus. Includes double-sided insert with lyrics and photos." - Onderstroom.
