Artist: ALVARIUS B
Title: Baroque Primitiva
Format: LP
Label: Poon Village
Country: USA
Price: $32.00
"By my count, Baroque Primitiva is the sixth album cut by Alvarius B. and is, like its predecessors, a deep swim through mysterious waters. The 11 tracks here were recorded at various sessions over the course of several years and range from "Humor Police" (a track that imagines what Syd Barrett might have sounded like had he been a devotee of rembetika) to a trippily Beatles-damaged version of "You Only Live Twice" (the sole surviving shard of the aborted Alvarius B. Plays The Bond Songbook project). Baroque Primitiva is the first long-format telegram from Alvarius B. since he lost his mothership (the Sun City Girls, with whom he employed his slave name, Alan Bishop) and it also feels like his most consistently non-acerbic -- perhaps even most beauty-oriented -- work. The songs often have a meditative pace and are filled with gorgeous lo-fi blends of vocals, guitar, bass and keys. Eyvind Kang guests on several tracks, but the bulk of the material was broadcast direct from the naked soul of Alvarius B., which turns out to be a warmer, sweeter place than you might imagine. The record also marks the return of the equally-legendary Poon Village label, whose 1993 Sun City Girls LP, Live At C.O.N. Artists, is a rare and lovely piece of that bands sonic puzzle. Poon Villages productions are always extraordinary in visual terms, and Baroque Primitiva is no exception. The covers meditative human mandala is a brilliant ocular ode to shifting visions of feminine pulchritude, and is worthy of the best framing job you can afford." -Byron Coley "Screenprinted jackets feature a double gate, hand-cut spines, and metallic photo print featuring 16 naked girls. Heavy 180 gram black vinyl pressed in the Rust Belt. Limited edition - 300 copies available for sale for the whole world." -Poon Village

APES AHOY
by Byron Coley

Its amazing every one pretends
perhaps wishing a billion post-marsupials could
just stand in for most aspects of self motivation
procedures of the masters which bear the mark of
a masters golden inevitable apocalypse.
But lets just be content, we hairy bums
impaling, as though we had tusks
the current whatever some lazy music journalist writes.
Creating, in the process, more differences between
Amuletian Snares than anyone from the future could imagine.
But when they visit our continually pounded planet...
they will realize only 6 visions really happen --
Their replication of a weekend
Your weekend.
Your show business.
Your expense.
Much more feces.
Blogging and spewing by music pipsqueak fanboys who cant know.
And in not knowing, those present
may see the future.
shall we begin again.

Artist: GATE
Title: Live In Boston, NYC 1994
Format: CD
Label: Poon Village
Country: USA
Price: $13.00
"Gate is Michael Morley (Dead C., Precious Metal Inc.) and whoever he feels like working with. This CD features performances from the 1994 Gate tour, when Morley travelled around with Keiji Haino & The Thurston Moore Male Slut trio. Lee Ranaldo (who recorded a ton of studio Gate stuff with Morley around the same period that has yet to surface), joined him for a single-song 30+ minute guitar duo instrumental extravaganza in Boston, which is reproduced in its entirety here as the first track on this CD. Building layers of feedback, sonic delay and looped drones, this is a mesmerizing work of organic power. Its followed by six shorter tracks, recorded a few days later in NY, with a trio lineup of Morley, Ranaldo and electric harp improviser, Zeena Parkins; densely organized sectors of gloriously abstract noisic combinations are faded in & out for appraisal. Packaged in Poon Villages elegant trademark screenprinted card-folio." - Poon Village.

Artist: NOYES, ROB
Title: The Feudal Spirit
Format: LP
Label: Poon Village
Country: USA
Price: $21.00
"Rob Noyes has been on the Eastern Massachusetts scene for a while, but what weve heard him play is music from within the context of electric bands, most of whom are loud as hell and exist somewhere along the rim of the post-core continuum. More recently, Rob has taken to displaying his solo acoustic guitar chops and they are massive. The Feudal Spirit is the first vinyl evidence of their shoulders. Like Western Masss Tony Pasquarosa, who mines the same widely-variant style-pits, Robs approach to acoustic playing resembles his electric work only through shared-belief-in-a-strong-downstroke. On the way to developing his own compositional/performance approach, Noyes sometimes seems to have absorbed an almost infinite reservoir of influences. Apart from some superb Basho-like 12-string tunneling, most momentary fragments tend to recall legendary Limeys like John Renbourn (and through him, Davey Graham), because Robs overt melodic structures tend towards the non-bluesoid. But then youll maybe hear a note-sequence spiced like something dropped from the hot strings of Michael Chapman or even a powerful throng that makes you think of Wizz Jones. When that happens, you realize theres more of a blues base to some of the songs than youd been able to untangle. Mr. Noyes hits a vast array of sub-genres on this album, and he hits them all pretty damn hard. Robs playing carries the weight of many possibly-imaginary forebears, but the way he smears them all together shows a holistic mastery of touch and imagination that defies a lot of todays players, who tend to shine in short bursts, then allow their dreams to outrun their technique. Rob Noyes has no such apparent limitations. Like Raymond Pettibon, whose artwork graces The Feudal Spirits cover, Robs able to create a true form-gobble, making some real beautiful noise in the process. Around the world, licensed Hodologists whisper, Make mine Noyes. Why dont you join them?" --Byron Coley, October 23rd, 2016, South Deerfield, MA. Jackets are hand-painted, screenprinted, hand-glued, and hand-cut; Cover art by Raymond Pettibon. 180 gram vinyl pressed at RTI; Lacquers cut by Bob Weston at Chicago Mastering Service; Edition of 330. Includes download code.” - Poon Village.

Artist: TOBARI, DAISUKE
Title: Till The End Of the Dream
Format: CD
Label: Poon Village
Country: USA
Price: $13.00
"First offered to earth on cassette available only in Japan circa 1995, these recordings prove Tobari as an eloquent ambassador from the hidden planet of the imagination. With a unique hybrid of bedroom ambiance and uni-versal atmospherics, singer-songwriter Daisuki Tobari weaves his folk stylings into a tapestry of oblique lullabies, introverted expansionism & timeless cosmic plunder. Obscure & sublime ruminations on the essence of endlessness draw parallels with the maverick visions of Magical Power Mako, Sun City Girls, Jandek & The Holy Modal Rounders. Fold-out sleeve (packed in CD jewelbox) screenprinted by the legendary original C.O.N. artists serigraph company. File Under: Turgid Clarity & Lucid Murk." "Its the Sgt. Peppers of lo-fi recordings -- ambitious and nuts and fun." - Poon Village.

Artist: WHITE WINGED MOTH
Title: I Can See Inside Your House
Format: CD
Label: Poon Village
Country: USA
Price: $13.00
"The White Winged Moth represents the solo activity of Dean Roberts, of the New Zealand improv/drone trio Thela (whose debut CD on Ecstatic Peace was released in 1995). Beautifully ringing guitar tones of organic-metallic origin (sounding akin to some of the sweetest extrapolation of electric string activity since Sonic Youth took Bad Moon Rising on tour), occasional whispered vocals, bits of piano and taped-haze add together for the effect of ultimate dreamsearch ambiance. Simply, one of the most gorgeously resonating releases of the current millennium. Typically stunning Poon Village screen-printed, die-cut folio packaging wraps it all up." - FE.

Artist: WINANT, WILLIAM
Title: Five American Percussion Pieces
Format: LP
Label: Poon Village
Country: USA
Price: $34.00
"The percussionist William Winants first-ever artist release, this is the first of a vinyl-only two volume series of contemporary classical solo percussion music. Features works by all American composers: Lou Harrison, Michael Byron, Alvin Curran, and James Tenney. Recorded from 1976 through 2013. Limited edition -- 350 copies available for sale for the whole world. Pressed on 200 gram vinyl. Gallery edition-style packaging, in hand-crafted 10 plate screen printed jackets with mitred-corner wood spines." - Poon Village. "When Mr. William Winant first came over to visit Kim Gordon and myself at her parents house in West Los Angeles sometime in the mid-1980s, I half expected another droll, affected muso from the Oingo Boingo camp that Kim had associated with in the mid-1970s before she hightailed it to NYC with the artist Mike Kelley to not only dive into the mysterious world of post-conceptual minimalism, but to ride reckless amongst the no wave music scene of downtown Manhattan -- which is pretty much where we two met and began dating. Willie came as a surprise. He basically talked a mile a minute about anything/anyone but continually drummed his fingers on the table top, creating and exercising rhythm patterns which, to some, may have been hyper-annoying, but to me were seriously obsessed brain-to-hand compositions. I knew right away this guy was no pretendo Hollywood ring-grabber but a completely engaged lover of experimental structure and aesthetic magiks inherent in the history of percussion discussion. His history was weird, coming out of an L.A. family of television production where commercial success was how many $$ were made by dog food ads and gravitating towards the margins of creativity informed by the philosophical enlightenments of John Cage, Lou Harrison and Iannis Xenakis, all composers he had worked with. When I visited him shortly thereafter at his pad in Oakland CA, near where he taught at Mills College, he showed me scores written and inscribed to him by Xenakis! This was his world, an academic outrider zone I had mythologized as a street rat musicologist and record collector. He was very curious about who was doing what in the experimental rock n roll world and I introduced him to Tom Surgal, a drummer from the Elvin Jones meets Milford Graves school of NYC free-thought drumming. We established a trio and played some amazing gigs in the early 1990s, releasing our first live document on the Victo label from Victoriaville, Canada (Piece for Jetsun Dolma, 1996). Winants wild nature and finely-honed sense of percussive dynamism landed him neat work with John Zorn, Cecil Taylor, Anthony Braxton and the Faith No More outlier band Mr. Bungle. When we went to hear WW play with John Cage in Central Park, Willie had shaved his head into a Mohawk and wore some sick death core t-shirt. Cage mustve known Willie was a man of humor, honesty and integrity -- as well as understanding the intention of the composer and delivering the goods. I always wanted him to record solo music through these years but he always would claim he wasnt ready. Is he ready now? He is seriously beyond ready and thankfully Poon Village, the only label with enough poon-power to engage this master sticksman, has come through. Big time." --Thurston Moore, Poznań, Poland, August 2013
