Title: Cape Flyaway
Format: CD
Label: Recommended
Country: UK
Price: $20.00
"After 5 years of extensive and careful work, the new and much anticipated CD by this extraordinary collective, who have no parallels, no rivals and no peers, is at last complete. Its a dense and indescribable orchestration of electric and acoustic guitars, clavioline, trumpet, Hammond organ, micromoog, biolmellodrone, electric and acoustic violins, bass, mandolin, accordion, piano, rubab, kit percussion and sometimes voice, layered and radically processed in the unique Biota manner. There is a leitmotif of folk elements in this piece that emerge from the roiling, swirling quicksand of sound we now expect from Biota, with texts by WB Yeats and snatches, arrangements and influences floating by way of Christy Moore, June Tabor, Judy Collins, Sandy Denny, Bert Jansch, the Bothy Band and older traditional sources. Biota craft sonic worlds that relate to, but are not built like, the music with which we are familiar; for them time is a continuum rather than a sequence of events; a simultaneous present in which past and future possibilities exist conterminously. With a 24 page full colour art portfolio from the Biota collective." - Recommended.

Title: Half A True Day
Format: CD
Label: Recommended
Country: UK
Price: $18.00
"Six years in the making, this is the sixth CD released by ReR from the visual/sonic art group Biota. Unique in their history and method, Biota painstakingly construct complex, organic structures that mix extensive studio processing and musique concrète techniques, with a highly eclectic orchestra of acoustic and electronic resources: from kit drums, through medieval winds, strings and barrel organs, to early experimental electronic instruments. Their works are always performance driven and interleaved with successive stages of lamination, imbrication of parts, and radical pre- and post-processing. As the title suggests, in this new work a portion of a cycle -- a repeating segment of time -- is explored. We employed repeating and overlapping motifs of different lengths, allowing their staggered interaction to produce varying degrees of harmonization, dissonance, masking and reinforcement. Unpredictability of outcome was furthered by electronic processing -- both manual and automated, random and predetermined -- and by the appearance, taken out of context, of unrelated passages taken from earlier projects. Real-time performers had to interact with this instability as they constructed their contributions, and later as they gave form to the final composition. Although there are elements of chance at work in the process, the eventual architecture is intentional, and carefully worked. Mixing was done by hand and without the aid of computers, then the composition was assembled and integrated digitally. --William Sharp, Biota. The interaction of staggered, overlapping elements reveals a changeable truth about the whole as the parts variously harmonize or dissent; reinforce or cloak one another in their unfolding. The project is, at heart, about uncertainty. Players encounter the shifting interplay between previously recorded parts juxtaposed with instrumental snippets -- out of context -- introduced from the groups archives. Electronic processing programs are employed to apply semi-random and semi-intentional alterations to the proceedings." - Recommended

Artist: CAMBERWELL NOW
Title: Alls Well
Format: CD
Label: Recommended
Country: UK
Price: $17.50
The complete works of this post-This Heat band featuring Charles Hayward, recorded 1982-1986. Featuring these original releases: Meridian, The Ghost Trade & Greenfingers LP/EPs. "This definitive edition collects the entire released output of Camberwell Now (two EPs and an LP), newly re-mastered by the band and repackaged with full notes, lyrics, additional photographs and artwork. Chronologically, Camberwell Now immediately succeeded This Heat, Charles Hayward continuing to work with This Heats last bassist Trefor Goronwy, and the two of them joining forces with Stephen Rickard who, for the new band, designed his unique cassette switchboard, a kind of proto-sampler -- though thats not the half of it (Steves article fully explaining the device is reprinted in the new, expanded booklet that comes with the CD). Musically, Camberwell both followed and departed from the style of This Heat. Formally and gesturally there are common elements, but there is far greater transparency and the sound palette is quite different: the music is more placed than grown, as the slow accumulation and evolution of material in This Heat gives way to a more immediate and orderly development of the material in Camberwell Now. The songs -- nostalgic, scary, and quietly desperate -- peer into the future to find harbour but confront only fragments of ruin. Debris and disturbance eat away at the root and corrode each shiny surface (mostly the musical work of the cassette switchboard). The juxtaposition of powerful, virtuosic playing and the eerie, often unidentifiable keenings, chords and constant motion of the cassettes is one of the things that make Camberwell Now so expressive of its time -- when the whole social and political fabric of a no-longer-great Britain was unravelling. Camberwell Now worked and recorded in Cold Storage, and toured intermittently through Europe between 1983 and 1986, when they disbanded." - Recommended

Artist: FAUST
Title: s/t
Format: CD
Label: Recommended
Country: UK
Price: $17.00
2016 repress. "In 1971, Polydor entered a deal with Uwe Nettelbeck to assemble a musical ensemble that could compete with the likes of The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, and Small Faces. Before the release of their debut, Faust would send tapes to Polydor containing anything from studio experiments to recordings of someone washing dishes. Allmusic critic Archie Patterson lauded the bands accomplishment, writing that The impact of Faust cannot be overstated; their debut album was truly a revolutionary step forward in the progress of rock music. He awarded Faust four and a half out of five stars, concluding that the level of imagination is staggering, the concept is totally unique and its fun to listen to as well. The first 1971 Polydor (transparent) album and one of the great testaments to originality and innovation in the field, this album took two years to create, but in the 45 years since has come to be recognized as a breathtaking achievement, which hasnt aged. Remastered, repackaged for the ReR Megacorp release, which is also a part of the Faust Wumme Years Box Set." - Recommended.

Artist: MOORE, R. STEVIE
Title: Phonography
Format: CD
Label: Recommended
Country: UK
Price: $19.00
"Phonography was Stevies first LP release, and an out-of-the-blue masterpiece: terminally idiosyncratic but with all the compositional qualities of great pop. A gifted songwriter, R Stevie (son of Bob Moore, Elvis bassist) grew up and was steeped in Nashvilles countrypolitanism; but, as a recidivist rebel, he inevitably slipped into strange byways, following his own, unique path into celebrated obscurity - as this strange and compelling record attests. Hans Arp said, My paintings are like fingernails: they keep growing and I keep cutting them off. R Stevies songs seem to follow the same rule. They create worlds, tell stories, trifle wantonly with form, harmony, structure and execution, and throw off passages of casual brilliance on the way. Lo-fi is integral to its purpose. You cant pay to get a sound like that. So, when nobody seemed to want to keep Phonography in print, ReR Megacorp were happy to oblige - its history. We took the opportunity to re-master and restore it to its original form. Instruments used: Red plastic Hagstrom electric guitar, Gibson SG Junior electric guitar, Fender Precision Bass, Yamaha acoustic guitar, Alvarez classical guitar, Premier snare drum, upside-down cardboard box bass drum, various full drum kits, Fischer grand piano, Franz metronome, Maracas, Tambourine, Cry Baby Wah Wah pedal, Jordan Creator sustain pedal, Korg synthesizer, Elka string synthesizer, Magnus chord organ, Realistic frequency equalizer, Maestro phase shifter, Univox echo chamber, hi-hat cymbals, extra cymbal (old), Panasonic cassette player, Koss and Vanco headphones, Fender Twin Reverb and Eenque amplifiers, Cords, Picks, Voice." - Recommended.

Title: Recommended Records Sampler
Format: Double LP
Label: Recommended
Country: UK
Price: $36.00
Original copies of this 1982 comp, with the glitter/glue cover art work. Featuring Vogel, Faust, Art Bears, Stormy Six, The Homosexuals, Joseph Racaille & Patrick Portella, Feliu Gasul, The Black Sheep, Univers Zero, Aksak Maboul/The Honeymoon Killers, The Work, Henry Cow, Decibel, Art Zoyd, The Muffins, Heiner Goebbels, Amos, COnventum, Hector Zazou, This Heat, The Residents, R. Stevie Moore, Ron Pate, Picchio Dal Pozzo, and Robert Wyatt. "One of thee most right angled compilations of the early eighties was the Recommended Records Sampler. Released when Post Punk was turning into that "New Pop" shite, and the even shite-er Goth nonsense. This handmade double album was unashamedly "Prog" in its outlook, a dirty word, even amongst the obviously "Prog" section of the Post-Punk brigade. Post-Punk was basically Progressive music, but with different (better) clothes, artwork, and in short song format. Its amusing to note how many intellectually interesting and/or progressive new records were released in 1977 and 1978 ( doesnt include proggers from before punk broke). Probably only Throbbing Gristle,The Residents and Pere Ubu in 77, and Wire, Cabaret Voltaire, and PiL in 78? A Brain was not a obligatory requirement in Punk Rock, and neither was musicianship. All the big Punk Groups of 76 had prog fans as integral members (including Rotten), and some of them became the key players behind the post-punk-prog groups. The avalanche started from 1979 onwards, and continued to mutate up to 1982, when it began to sound as if the preceding five years hadnt happened. Unknown to the new generation, the old guard of progressive music had carried on regardless, like the Henry Cow lot, and had evolved into the Rock in Opposition bracket; which is another way of saying "Prog", but with a "Post-Punk" edge.Like the NWOBHM, they took Punks urgency, and improved the older model for a modern, thinking, audience.
This set was definitely an eye-opener for me, with its glue and glitter sleeve, DIY artwork, and obvious anti-capitalist politics, and I noticed it had The Residents(with their best song),This Heat, and The Homosexuals on it, so it couldnt be Yes or ELP record; worth a punt. Theres hardly a dull track on the four sides of this classic compilation, even the French bands are good? Cant Recommend (Geddit?) this enough, even 32 years later. Ill let Chris Cutler the man behind the label explain the reason for releasing this recording:" - Die or DIY blog.

"In 1982 Recommended was 4 years old, the catalogue had expanded and the label was firmly established; a sampler seemed an obvious and necessary next step. Compiling extracts from existing releases would have been boring, so I asked the most interesting groups under our umbrella to record something new. Most of them did. All the Rio groups appear, except for ETRON FOU LELOUBLAN who had broken up, and the sharp edge of the new generation of British bands is also well represented(THIS HEAT, THE WORK, THE HOMOSEXUALS, AMOS AND SARAH). But Europeans and Americans still predominate; the Japanese had not arrived yet. This record would have sounded very different 3 years later". "Intended on its release to be a practical compendium, 25 years on this collection reappears as an indispensable document of the range and musical brilliance of a handful of left-field groups struggling to give shape to new musical vocabularies. The breadth of their imaginations is exemplary. And Inspiring." - Chris Cutler, May 2008.
