"warp-speed early-80s hardcore...JERK WARD were friends of the NEOS, and you can hear their influence in the music....this LP sounds great considering its comprised of demo recordings...the fast stuff gives DRI, YOUTH KORPS, and STARK RAVING MAD a run for their money in the speed department, but far from being monochrome thrash, JERK WARD varies the tempos and also throws in weird guitar work to keep you on your toes. Lovingly compiled and well worth tracking down." - MRR ,Oct. 2009. Features Stephen McBean of Black Mountain/Pink Mountaintops.

Artist: NORTHERN HAZE
Title: Sinnaktuq
Format: LP
Label: Supreme Echo
Country: Canada
Price: $25.00
"Hailing from the 69th parallel in the Arctic is a story unlike any other.  Born on the land to Nomadic parents and later settled in the hamlet community of Igloolik, these childhood friends grew up learning to play on toy instruments until becoming accomplished musicians and forming a group in 1977.  Their talent won success in the early 80s with contests, press coverage, and tours of isolated Northern communities until in 85 when CBC Radio invited them to travel 3000 km south to record an album.  The result became the first Canadian Inuit Rock/Metal album ever made and first Indigenous language rock album in North America.  Pressed in a tiny quantity of 500 copies for promotional use only, the LP quickly disappeared into the vortex of rare Canadiana.  Over the 1990’s and into the millennium, Northern Haze endured great hardship yet 35+ years on they still prevail.  In 2010, a new recording and a documentary film on the history of the group was produced on location in the Arctic.  Complete with traditional “ayaya” parts and sung entirely in Inuktitut, the end result is a heavy melodic rock/metal album played by veterans of the genre with a distinctly original character unlike anything heard before.  For these men who live two lives, the old ways of the past meet with those of the present; “Sinnaktuq” (their “dreams”) are truly embodied within the realization of this amazing deluxe collection of original material. 11 songs total: seven songs recorded 1985, one song recorded 2002, and three songs recorded 2010, ranging from tight and heavy NWOBHM to heavy melodic doom-rock!  Exclusive CBC license, 100% authorized, remastered, original cover art painstakingly restored, 12 page booklet packed with vintage photographs + art + detailed history.  The true Rock Shamans of the North! "Northern Haze were a rock and roll band with all band members born and raised in Igloolik, Nunavit. The band members were: Kolitalik Inukshuk on lead guitar; James Unalaq on electric rhythm guitar; Elijah Kunnuk on bass; John Inooya on drume; Ed Bimm on synthesizer; and Randall Prescott on harmonica. Randall Prescott was Musical Direction; Marc Lajoie Engineer; produced by Les McLaughlin. This music artifact is of cultural and historical significance. The group were the first Inuit group to record a rock and roll album." - Supreme Echo.

"The album was recorded at Marc Productions in Ottawa in March, 1985. The great cover artwork was by NORTHERN HAZE. The photography was by John Ough. The musicianship is tight; these young lads could really tear it up. Theres great guitar riffs, fuzz guitar, and a garage feel. The blend of inuit culture and rock is entirely distinct - this is a completely unique recording that could never be duplicated. Due to its quality and rarity, this album remains on the wishlists of many a collector worldwide." -Museum of Canadian Music.

"Over 4000 years ago, when the first Inuit moved from place to place in the Arctic Regions, the drums and the haunting chants of the voice were the sole means of entertainment. These songs were also used to pass information from the old to the new generation. Ayi Ayi songs told stories of the past, and contained hope for the future. The drum and the voice! Today, music is an important part of the Inuit culture. "NORTHERN HAZE", a group of young men, all born and raised in Igloolik, carry on this way. But they have added the rhythms of modern rock music to the drums and voice of the past. Lead singer and guitarist Kolitalik Inukshuk with bass player and backup vocalist Elijah Kunnuk, drummer John Inooya and guitarist James Unalaq blend the music of today with the thoughts of yesterday and the hopes for the future in this first album to feature Inuktitut Rock and Roll. The songs speak of the way of life of the older generation as in Inusivut, and of present day relationships as in Anuvunga. The group "NORTHERN HAZE" hopes this recording will please the older generation as well as show young Inuit that modern sounds are an important part of the future of Inuit music." -Robert Williston/liner notes. Edition of 657.

Artist: RETSEPTI
Title: Anthology of Georgian Underground - Tbilisi, 1987-92
Format: CD
Label: Supreme Echo
Country: Canada
Price: $13.00
"Could any Western music critic really comprehend the reality of the soviet state of Georgia during the 1980s? Let alone, being a complete anomaly in the countries contemporary music scene? This small and beautiful country in the Caucuses is world renown for its polyphonic vocal music “ however, little is known of contemporary Georgian music. Tbilisi, an isolated capital city. Isolation brings character. By way of definition, Retsepti represent what should be considered the most relevant contemporary music group to have existed in the Republic Of Georgia during the 1980s. If one is to summarize the history of underground music in ex-socialist countries, they will find very few which rank alongside the maturity of composition and stylistic character which Lado Burdulis group accomplished during their short and troubled existence. Retsepti was formed in 1987 by vocalist/leader Lado Burduli. A child prodigy - Lados first group was in fact 15 years earlier at the age of 7-8. His father being a famous actor of Soviet cinema; Lado himself partook in many films, including lead-roles. Growing up amidst a period which witnessed the Soviet Unions first official rock festival (Tbilisi 1980), the group distanced themselves from the vocal instrumental ensemble and youth music of the Soviet Estrada. ⢏ur attitude of the band was no interviews and no relationships with anybody " starting from the other bands existing during that period, to the journalists, and generally whomever "no relationship with anybody at all!". Retsepti means recipe, or prescription"We chose the name because at that time, the Soviet society needed some treatment, and we were the "retsepti" for this treatment which would eventually cure them (the people of this society)." - Lado.
Existing throughout the fall of the Soviet Union and a five year period of civil war within Georgia, Burdulis lyrics bare a consistently similar theme; the struggle to sustain compassion and love within an intolerant society.
Retseptis music is extraordinary – original, well arranged dark punk and wave sung in Georgian with a raw voice which has melody under its surface. The Caucasian language group is delightfully unique sounding in its percussive and even abrasive tones.

This documentation offers the listener a rare chance to experience the groups entire recorded repertoire; from the odd sized Russian 1/4” master tape discovered in an empty building two years after the civil war, to the sole remaining copies of songs on cassette tapes; all songs suffered substantial deterioration of sound, requiring meticulous audio restoration.
Retseptis story is a fascinating one, and the inclusion of an interview pried out of Burduli over five years, along with his original lyrics translated into English, only seem to conclude with a stronger sense of mystery. After six long years with innumerable set-backs, I am very proud to present, the definitive Restepti."

"A true pearl of the Soviet-era underground, well arranged unique mix of NWOBHM, dark-punk / cold-wave, and garage with abrasive Georgian vocals, recorded 1989-90. Raw & angry enough for the punks yet dark enough to please the post-punks. Musically comparable to SECTION 25, GRAZDANSKAYA OBORONA, early KILLING JOKE, STOOGES, JOY DIVISION, SIEKIERA, etc. Anglophones do not fear, this anthology will amaze! "A dark, desperate feel, interesting guitar work, and a twisted vocalist!" (MRR - Oct. 2006) "very glad to have it" - Middle Eastern Division, Harvard University (May 2009). 10 songs, professionally 24-bit re-mastered. Deluxe gatefold ecopak cover, hand stamped inner-sleeve, plus 16 page booklet with lyrics / photographs / interview & history of underground music in the ex-Soviet Republic of Georgia." - Supreme Echo.

Title: Dark Years
Format: LP
Label: Supreme Echo
Country: USA
Price: $24.00
“”Dark Years", dating from 1974, is an essential artifact unearthed from the Canadian underground, complete with burning crosses, smoking cauldrons, mouthfuls of blood and haunting corpse paint predating black metal by well over a decade. A melding of epic doom, gutter glam, and shocking Satanic proto-punk from the damp Vancouver wastelands. Professionally remastered from original analogue masters, 12 page booklet with insane fully restored photographs (full color cover & centerfold), first press of 500 gold ink hand-numbered copies! 7 songs, including: "Litany to Raise the Dead", "I Am the Wizard", and "Satans Blood”.” - Supreme Echo.

"An undiscovered early light in underground North American heavy music, recommended to folks keen on the heavier side of glam, metalheads and those searching for the crumbs to that led to the big punk feast." "...based around an occult “rock opera”, which leans hard into the bonehead crunch zone of proto-metal / proto-punk." "...denim delinquent yoofs exercising a fascination with the dark side..." "part glitter rock garb, part prescient caked-on black metal-type makeup (with nods to Ms. Cooper)—at the time when contemporaneous future stars KISS were just making their way into the Bowery. Long hair, mustachioed faces and elaborate stage show that included occult antics, fake blood, incantations, smoking crosses, cauldrons, torches and fog effects was a quite a sight to behold. Far ahead their time aesthetically, during this period they shared stages with other Northwestern iconoclasts/weirdos in Ze Whiz Kids (with a pre-Screamers Tomata Du Plenty), Mikl Body Rock (with the infamous Jon Mikl Thor) and glam-pop wonders Sweeney Todd." "...brutal, metallic, pulsating "Litany to Raise the Dead," one of the most realized and fleshed-out tracks on the set—including the most accomplished lyrically..." "...straight, chugging, heavy rocknroll/proto-punk sound, with Chuck Berry-infused leads and some glammy vocal touches—“Satans Blood,” “Vaseline,” “Roaring Drunk,” “Sweet Baby C.T.” (the latter a standout of gutter-bound boogie/punk rocknroll akin to the Dead Boys). - Jeremy Cargill, Ugly Things / Got Kinda Lost.

Title: Things
Format: 7"
Label: Supreme Echo
Country: USA
Price: $9.00
"Canadas long lost doom/proto-punk legends finally unleashed! Distancing themselves from the bustling local psych scene, they formed in 1971 on the rural outskirts of Vancouver becoming a hard rock trio unlike any other local group. A newspaper article dated January 18, 1973 mentions "the ear-splitting Twitch" playing regularly to capacity audiences.
Band leader Ian prompted the guys to wear bloody horror-fantasy make-up and bizarre outfits, becoming the first (and only) in Vancouver to do so (also believed to be first to use smoke & fog) packing full house night after night.
Late March / early April they did two recording sessions documenting the entirety of original compositions - a mere four songs resulting in two 45 singles. The first 45 was issued in May and the second in August, both pressed in roughly 100 copies.
Near to the end of 73, drummer Bernie decided that make-up was against his principles and left on amicable terms. The original power trio ended giving way to the legendary and shocking "Dark Years" of 1974-75 with all together new group, heavier sound, darker image (like black metal bands of today), and elaborate stage show.
Twitchs legacy is the missing link for both early 70s proto-punk and proto-metal of the Pacific Northwest region; what was yet to come during 1974-78 only confirmed such to be true. Originally issed as two separate sleeveless 45s in very small editions, now compiled onto one EP with orange repro labels, deluxe picture sleeve (not fold-over), and 16 page booklet with detailed history & tons of photos. Fully authorized, limited edition of only 600 copies." -Supreme Echo, 2012.
