Artist: BEVERLIN II, BRYCE
Title: Seizing Fate By The Throat
Format: LP
Label: Taiga
Country: USA
Price: $23.00
"Bryce Beverlin II is a prolific multidisciplinary artist based in Minneapolis. His primary discipline is music -- specifically, freely-improvised vocals and percussion. Seizing Fate By The Throat is a distillation, the spirit of 15 years of spittle and brass vapors collected in this studio recording from March 14, 2010. Quietly tinkering with an array of metal, plastic and wooden objects, Beverlin draws the listener in only to reveal that he is unlocking the cage of a life-threatening animal. Suddenly: gnash, gurgle, grunt, the sounds of saliva smacking on hand-peeled lips. His performances overwhelm, frighten and suck the air out of the room, exorcising burden and frustration. This recording captures every detail in extreme close-up from inside the artists mouth to the tips of his fingers. Mastered by James Plotkin, cut direct to metal and pressed on 200 gram virgin vinyl, Seizing Fate By The Throat comes packaged in a full-color gloss varnished jacket with spot metallic printing and liner notes printed in the pocket. Limited to 300 copies only and co-released with Beverlins label Insides Music." - Taiga.

Title: Needle Drop Jungle
Format: Double LP
Label: Taiga
Country: USA
Price: $34.00
"May 30th, 2012 marked the 80th birthday of American visionary musician Pauline Oliveros. Needle Drop Jungle is a continuation of the celebration. Together with bandmates Stuart Dempster and David Gamper, Oliveros and company churned up a vigorous storm at their January 2011 residency in Seattle, captured on this double vinyl release. With the help of staff at DXArts, the Deep Listening Band recorded impromptu downpours unhindered by technical issues, a peak in their collective creative output. Suddenly and unexpectedly, David Gamper died on September 27th, 2011. Needle Drop Jungle thus includes the brightest moments from what have sadly become the last recordings of this exceptional trio. Along with the simultaneously released Pauline Oliveros Primordial/Lift 2LP, this title completes a tetralogy of Oliveros releases on Taiga that started with the Deep Listening Band Then & Now and Timeless Pulse Trio 2LPs. Needle Drop Jungle was mastered by James Plotkin, cut direct to metal and pressed on 200 gram virgin vinyl in an edition of 500. It comes packaged in a double-wide raw brown cardstock jacket with essays by the band and a flooded pocket. The jacket is encased in a custom slipcase, with gorgeous photographs by Michael S. Carlson from deep within the expansive Taiga forests southern edge." - Taiga.

Title: Then & Now Now & Then: Celebrating 20 Years
Format: Double LP
Label: Taiga
Country: USA
Price: $28.00
"The Deep Listening Band is an improvisational group founded in 1988 by Pauline Oliveros with members David Gamper and Stuart Dempster. Now, 20 years later, the trio celebrate an anniversary of improvisation, innovation and commitment with their first-ever vinyl release. This vinyl-only document contains four side-long tracks, one reissued and three previously-unreleased. "Cannery Row" was originally available on the Troglodytes Delight (1990) album and captures the band in Tarpaper Cave, which Dempster recalls as "an old limestone quarry near Rosendale, New York that had lovely dripping water sounds and Valhalla-like mists." The previously-unreleased tracks were gathered from three separate live performances at the Sounds Like Now Festival, Sound Exchange American Composers Forum, and Engine27, a 16-channel installation of special speakers. The audio was mastered for vinyl by James Plotkin, cut direct to metal and pressed on 200 gram virgin vinyl in a limited edition of 500. The records come packaged in a custom-designed slipcover and a jacket with doublewide spines. The slipcover features two exquisite photographs and is dual-finished with a gloss front and matte back. The jacket is printed on a cardboard brown stock with the pocket flooded green and features three rich essays including: an introduction by David Felton, a short history by Dempster and information about the Expanded Instrument System (EIS) from Oliveros. Mastered for vinyl by James Plotkin, cut direct to metal and pressed on 200 gram virgin vinyl in a limited edition of 500. Includes an intro by David Felton, a bio by Dempster and an essay about the Expanded Instrument System (EIS) from Oliveros." -Taiga - "First it was the name of an album that came out about 20 years ago and made new music history. Deep Listening. Then it became the name of the band that recorded that album. Then it became the name of a practice, an approach to art, improvisation, exploration and, well, living, that drove that band, a band of crazies led by Pauline Oliveros, to lower themselves into a huge underground concrete cistern in the state of Washington." -David Felton, 2008

Title: Homage
Format: Triple LP Box
Label: Taiga
Country: USA
Price: $61.00
"Presenting a unified whole, the Homage 3LP boxed set contains Homage to the Square Wave, ...Sine Wave and ...Pointed Waveforms, all out-of-print until now. Initially released separately in 2008, 2009 and 2012 respectively with custom letterpress jackets, this collection includes new retrospective artwork by John Brien. Each disc comes in its own one-color silkscreen jacket using the same blue, orange and green from the original editions; all housed in a rigid white satin-coated slipcase with spot varnish printing, hand-numbered out of 800. Eleh, an artist who flourishes in restraint, uses a reduced sonic vocabulary to highlight delicate intricacies in a logical path toward harmonious satisfaction. The organization of hypnotic square waves, rippling sine waves and triangle/saw tooth waveforms is a discourse in the infinity, rather than the limits, of reduction. By employing a natural practice of balanced interpretation, Eleh enables an individual reaction free of the clutter of white noise." - Taiga.

Title: Homage To The Sine Wave
Format: LP
Label: Taiga
Country: USA
Price: $23.00
"The elusive Eleh project resurfaces from the depths with another release on Taiga. Homage To The Sine Wave is the second release in their sound waves-based Homage To... series, following 2008s sold-out LP, Homage To The Square Wave. In a similar fashion, the elemental approach to the construction of the pieces on Sine Wave is influenced by Josef Albers, the German-born U.S.-based abstract painter and theorist best known for his color studies embodied in paintings of geometric abstraction. Both faces feature side-long compositions at just over 20 minutes each. Side A holds "Together We Are One," a piece that begins floating in the ether, but gently lands on a field of rhythmic bass pulses before dipping below the horizon. "Beneath The Silver Sun" on the B-side is a meditation on the nighttime, with a consistent delivery and subtle transformation that is dually tranquil and exhilarating. Volume reveals detail. Sine Wave was mastered by James Plotkin, cut direct to metal and pressed on 200 gram virgin vinyl in a hand-numbered edition of 500. The LP comes housed in a custom 2-color letterpressed jacket that was designed by John Brien of Important Records and printed by Studio On Fire in Minneapolis. The jackets were printed flat, die-cut, folded and glued, resulting in a letterpressed jacket with a printed spine. Eleh was formed to pay tribute to the pioneers of audio minimalism such as La Monte Young, Terry Riley, Eliane Radigue, Pauline Oliveros and Charlemagne Palestine. They use vintage modular gear to produce recordings of pure tone, pure sound, pure volume and pure analog. This is two-tone drone targeted towards absolute, meditative bliss." -Taiga

Title: Viento
Format: LP
Label: Taiga
Country: USA
Price: $25.00
"In the summer of 2010 I had the chance to visit Antarctica under the invitation of the Argentine Antarctic Division. It was nothing short of breathtaking as I am sure anyone would suspect. Upon departing from Buenos Aires, the Hercules transport, under direction of the Argentine Military made a routine stop at the airbase outside Rio Gallegos. What was meant to be a few hours layover turned into several days, as winds there exceeded expectations and before long it was clear the transport could not take off. Adverse weather conditions along the Antarctic Peninsula also didnt help the departure. Whilst the scientists bunkered down in their quarters, I headed outside with my recorder. The wind in Patagonia is, well, breathtaking. Literally, there were moments where it was... difficult to catch breath. Across three days I recorded abandoned buildings, lone trees bent over in fields of tundra-like grasses, quivering road signs, wailing fences and other objects brought into relief with the wind. It wasnt comfortable, but the sounds, I hope, speak for themselves. The Antarctic recordings were made during two blizzards at Marambio and Esperanza bases. During the blizzard in Marambio, the temperature dropped to -40 degrees centigrade (with wind-chill) which made recording particularly challenging. The wind battered the bases structures and telecommunications equipment, making a range of unusual tonal phase drones, which you can hear in these recordings. The blizzard at Esperanza was mild by comparison, but still strong enough to coat penguins in layer of snow as they huddled together during the worst of the wind storm. Listening back to these recordings I am struck by the sheer physicality of the wind. Its rare that you feel physically reduced by the motion of air, but in both Patagonia and Antarctica that is just how I felt. A small speck of organic dust in a howling storm" --Lawrence English. English composed Viento from these field recordings, and it was cut direct to metal and pressed on 400 copies of 200-gram virgin vinyl for ultimate clarity. Housed in custom letterpress packaging with visuals complementing the stark and austere sounds within." - Taiga.

Artist: LAMB, GARRY BRADBURY, DAVID BURRASTON, OREN AMBARCHI & ROBIN FOX, ALAN
Title: Wired Open Day 2009
Format: Double LP
Label: Taiga
Country: USA
Price: $34.00
"Wired Open Day 2009 is a vinyl-only release documenting live performances by Alan Lamb, Garry Bradbury, David Burraston, Oren Ambarchi and Robin Fox. Held outdoors during the evening of October 31st at The WIRED Lab, in rural South West, New South Wales, Australia, this 2LP is a document of the event; the result of an artist-in-residence program to explore the sonic possibilities of The Wires, landscape scale installations in rural NSW. The WIRED Lab is an artist-run initiative founded in 2007 to foster art/science collaborations in a rural environment. The initial focus of this project was to establish a site to preserve and expand on The Wires, a distinctly Australian invention that was pioneered by Australian artist Alan Lamb since the 1970s. Wiredlab.org notes that, "Lambs formal investigations of The Wires started in 1976 with his discovery of a 1km stretch of abandoned telegraph wires on a farm in the Great Southern region of Western Australia ... Lamb learnt to record them and later devised compositions with these recordings. When these telegraph lines eventually decayed, Lamb commenced building wire installations primarily for recording. Like the scale of the original telegraph wires, these purpose-built wire installations were not of a domestic scale, they too had a deep connection with nature and spanned 100s of meters across the rural landscape. Although principally functioning like a giant æolian harp, it is not only wind that plays The Wires, it seems that on their own accord The Wires often harmonically sing, vibrate or roar as they react to environmental factors, thereby creating a unique and infinite instrumentation of itself and its surrounds, in the words of David Burraston they are natures microphone." The four sides of Wired Open Day 2009 display the expansive range of the Wire installations built by The Wired Lab. Commencing at sunset, Garry Bradbury and Alan Lamb coax a gentle eco with acoustic recordings into deep and sonorous reverberations on side A. David Burraston and Alan Lamb focus on droplets of zaps and wire oscillations at twilight, with side B culminating in a downpour of crackling spray. At nightfall, Oren Ambarchi applies his mastery of condensed and layered tones on side C, with shuddering overtones, husky drones and rich clusters of sustain. Robin Fox concludes, in the dark, on side D, mashing off-kilter rhythms with a tumble of staccato bursts and fuzzy crunch. An edition of 500 double LPs in hand-numbered matte-varnished Stoughton tip-on gatefold jackets, Wired Open Day 2009 was mastered by James Plotkin, cut direct to metal and pressed on 200 gram virgin vinyl. This release features photographs from the site and text by Sarah Last, founder of The WIRED Lab and Curator of Wired Open Day 2009." -Taiga.

Title: UNTITLED#300
Format: LP
Label: Taiga
Country: USA
Price: $25.00
"Pressing of 300 copies on crystal-clear 200-gram virgin vinyl packaged in a custom letterpress jacket printed, die-cut, and hand-assembled at Studio On Fire in Minneapolis, with particular care taken to retain the fine detail of the covers microscopic type. "Francisco López is internationally recognized as one of the major figures of the sound art and experimental music scene. For more than 30 years he has developed an astonishing sonic universe, absolutely personal and iconoclastic, based on a profound listening of the world. Destroying boundaries between industrial sounds and wilderness sound environments, shifting with passion from the limits of perception to the most dreadful abyss of sonic power, proposing a blind, profound and transcendental listening, freed from the imperatives of knowledge and open to sensory and spiritual expansion" --Pedro Higueras, Sonom Studios. "UNTITLED#300 is an LP based on multi-track field recordings I did in 2011 of a large colony of seagulls in a group of small islands right in front of the Moroccan-Algerian border, together with hydrophone and contact mic recordings of sea creatures underwater from the same location (side A and B of the LP, respectively). Being interested in going beyond a traditional soundscape perspective, Ive played freely with mixing and editing, in an unorthodox way, different multi-channel recordings I did. Side A (abovewater) is the large seagull colony. In side B (underwater) what you hear is predominantly millions of very small shrimp-like crustaceans, dolphin sonar (the beating pattern of the first section), and occasional fish (the frog-like calls)" --Francisco López. Original environmental sound matter recorded in the Chafarinas Islands off the coast of Morocco, summer 2011. Edited, mixed, and mastered at mobile messor, The Hague, the Netherlands, summer 2012. Field work carried out with the collaboration and support of the SIGEIN-Chafarinas research group (Integral Ecological Management System of the Chafarinas Islands), directed by Francisco J. Acosta (Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain) and coordinated by Javier Zapata (Spanish National Park Service)." - Taiga.

Artist: LOTUS EATERS
Title: Wurmwulv
Format: Double LP
Label: Taiga
Country: USA
Price: $34.00
"Lotus Eaters is Stephen OMalley (Sunn O))), KTL, etc.), James Plotkin (Khanate, Phantomsmasher, etc.) and Aaron Turner (Isis, Old Man Gloom, etc.). Previously issued on CD, Plotkin has remixed, remastered and rearranged Wurmwulv for this vinyl edition using alternate takes from the original recording sessions. The 2LP also includes reworked material from Lotus Eaters self-titled 7" released by Drone Records. 52 minutes and 29 seconds on 3 sides of direct metal mastered 200 gram virgin vinyl, the 2LP has a drawing by Turner etched on side D. Housed in a Stoughton tip-on gatefold jacket designed by OMalley, Wurmwulv features Stephen Kasner paintings printed on linen-textured woven paper, a spot varnished interior and flooded pockets. The Kasner paintings and Turner drawings included were created specifically for this vinyl edition of 1,000. Reconfigured for vinyl, Wurmwulv is a solvent-soaked carpet ride into loose soil. Worms writhe over cilia as moist roots lick and graze skin. The dampened howls of wolves reverberate through water freezing into creaking crystals. When oxygen levels reach a critical low, a cacophony of clanging metal provides an inhalation of humid air." -Taiga

Artist: MUELLER, JON
Title: Death Blues
Format: LP
Label: Taiga
Country: USA
Price: $23.00
"The six songs that comprise Jon Muellers Death Blues are each their own doorway to both a bold new musical statement from the renowned drummer/percussionist and an unprecedented journey into a conscious contemplation of death -- and the life that surrounds it. Released in tandem with a multi-part manifesto, Death Blues transcends its own existence as a 34-minute, earth-cracking rock album. Much like Mueller, whose landmark solo work stands alongside his role in notable bands Volcano Choir (and previously, Collections of Colonies of Bees), Death Blues embodies the acknowledgement that theres more to experiencing music than simply just listening. Conceived and largely executed in its recorded form by Mueller himself -- adding hammered acoustic guitar and bold vocal patterning to his ever-evolving mastery of percussion -- Death Blues is audibly (and intensely) personal. However, the very act of recording was the first step in a discourse that Mueller began over a year ago, forming a band of brilliant performers from his Milwaukee, WI hometown that would go on to perform Death Blues at Hopscotch Music Festival in Raleigh, NC and at two sold-out Death Blues events in Milwaukee, where a labyrinth led the audience into a multi-sensory and participatory experience culminating in a climactic performance of the album. It was as close as one could get to being next to Mueller at that moment of discovery: of the inevitability of death as the impetus to become more present in each moment and of the necessity of building his own path to sharing that idea. Death Blues is being collaboratively released by Taiga and Hometapes and is available as a limited edition LP packaged in a deluxe litho-wrapped jacket that includes the Death Blues manifesto; 500 hand-numbered copies of the highest fidelity pressed on 200 gram virgin vinyl." -Taiga.

Artist: NAKATANI, TATSUYA
Title: Confirmation
Format: LP
Label: Taiga
Country: USA
Price: $23.00
"200-gram opaque red virgin-compound LP housed in a custom heavyweight yellow paper jacket with silver and metallic black foil stamping made at Studio on Fire in Minneapolis. Edition of 430. Nomadic percussionist Tatsuya Nakatani travels worldwide, his performances blooming with ceaseless expanse. Although Nakatani is a valiant collaborator, joining with other musicians, dancers, filmmakers, and beyond, solo percussion is the root of it all. Simply stated in Nakatanis own words, this album is "Confirmation of all of my acoustic solo percussion performance since 1998. Recorded live at Nakatani-kobo in Easton Pennsylvania USA during snow season of beginning of 2015. No overdubbing and used the fewest effects possible on this LP." Confirmation is Nakatanis third release on Taiga. The label initially saw the vibrant color of his collaboration with Mary Halvorson and Reuben Radding as MAP on Fever Dream (TAIGA 009LP, 2010). This was followed by Nakatani Gong Orchestra (2012), a woven blend of heavy vibrations from Nakatanis one-off group experiments on the road. Now theres number three, solo percussion, the foundation of his practice, charged with thunders, screams, sparks, and countless other ineffable sonic textures. Mastered by James Plotkin and cut direct to copper, Confirmation is Nakatanis first solo percussion album to be released on LP." - Taiga.

Title: Nakatani Gong Orchestra
Format: LP
Label: Taiga
Country: USA
Price: $23.00
"Perpetually rolling, Japanese-American master percussionist Tatsuya Nakatani holds a relentless schedule, road-bound in continuous dedication to his passion. His solo sets thunder with coaxed nuances from his kit, overlaid in staggering bounty. Nakatani is also fearless when it comes to collaboration, and seeks it out adventurously during his extensive tours. In this spirit of combined efforts, Nakatani Gong Orchestra shines a different light in each new location it arises. Nakatani has been packing his van with gongs and his handmade bows, mallets and surrounding instruments throughout 2011 and 2012. Each stop offers a new set of five or six players who have a brief technique workshop and practice with Nakatani before performing fresh to a live audience. Encompassing a wide range of different backgrounds and experience, each performance results in vastly different soundscapes. Many of these Nakatani Gong Orchestra rituals have been recorded, highlights from which have been extracted and compiled seamlessly for this LP. Recorded 2011 and 2012 in Easton PA, Oberlin OH, Philadelphia PA, Kansas City KS, Richmond VA and Toledo OH, the Nakatani Gong Orchestra LP was mastered by James Plotkin, cut direct to metal and pressed on 200 gram virgin vinyl. An edition of 800, the record is packaged in a hand-numbered Stoughton tip-on jacket wrapped with black paper and printed with metallic ink." - Taiga.

Artist: NOVELLER
Title: No Dreams
Format: LP
Label: Taiga
Country: USA
Price: $25.00
"Soaring sixth solo album by American electric guitarist Sarah Lipstate. Mastered for vinyl by James Plotkin, cut direct to metal and pressed on 200 gram virgin vinyl in an edition of 400. Housed in a heavy custom weight black paper jacket letterpress printed with silver ink, diecut and hand-assembled at Studio on Fire in Minneapolis. "Sarah Lipstate is Noveller. No Dreams, her sixth full-length release, welcomes in an era of expanded instrumentation for the Brooklyn-based guitarist and composer. The compositions on No Dreams explore the artists struggle with her blurred perception of reality and hallucination in the twilight of sleep and awakening. The songs alternate between being firmly rooted in place, like the epic, beat-driven "Mannahatta" and the playful guitar melodies of "Rue de Montmorency," and navigating the murky underworld of nightmare as in the dissonant layers of bowed guitar and manipulated piano in "The Fright." Title track "No Dreams" is a gloriously melancholic plea from Lipstates overdriven electric guitar for exemption from the throes of parasomnia." - Important.

Artist: OLIVEROS, PAULINE
Title: Primordial/Lift
Format: Double LP
Label: Taiga
Country: USA
Price: $34.00
"Primordial/Lift is a continuation of Pauline Oliveros 80th birthday celebration. This double vinyl record contains the previously-unreleased second performance of Primordial/Lift from September 25th, 2010. The first performance of this work, which took place in 1998, was released on CD in both edited and full-length versions. Interpreting a score penned by Oliveros in 1998, Anne Bourne, Andrew Deutsch, Miguel Frasconi, David Grubbs, Jason Huang and Suzanne Thorpe joined Oliveros at Issue Project Room in Brooklyn to divulge this bizarre and surreal sound work. Centered around a low frequency oscillator, the group swirls cello, voice, sampler, glass drones, e-guitar, violin and V accordion into a molten mass dropped from outer space. Along with the simultaneously released Deep Listening Band Needle Drop Jungle 2LP, this title completes a tetralogy of Oliveros releases on Taiga that started with the Deep Listening Band Then & Now and Timeless Pulse Trio 2LPs. Primordial/Lift was mastered by James Plotkin, cut direct to metal and pressed on 200 gram virgin vinyl in an edition of 500. It comes packaged in a double-wide jacket with the original scores printed in metallic ink and a flooded pocket. The jacket is encased in a custom slipcase, with gorgeous photographs by Michael S. Carlson from deep within the expansive Taiga forests southern edge." - Taiga.

Artist: PAVONE, JESSICA
Title: Knuckle Under
Format: LP
Label: Taiga
Country: USA
Price: $25.00
"Knuckle Under is Jessica Pavones first recording to be released on vinyl. Mastered by James Plotkin, cut direct to metal and pressed on 200 gram virgin vinyl in an edition of 300. The jacket was letterpress printed, diecut and hand-assembled at Studio on Fire in Minneapolis. "Violist Jessica Pavones Knuckle Under is the result of an exercise in mono focus, the result of a medically enforced hiatus from playing her primary instrument. She returned to the viola after a 21 month lay-off determined to play only the sounds she most wanted to hear. That turned out to be long tones, often played with such force that one imagines a puff of rosin rising from her strings as she bowed them. , But Not Here" gets through just three rustic sounding notes before a delay unit sprays one out like a prism. She repeats the phrase, and another note splits and gets trapped in an effects pedals hall of mirrors. The simplicity and sheer noisiness of the music feels remote from the scrupulous craftsmanship exhibited on her last solo record, Hope Dawson Is Missing, even though they share a tune. "Plutonium", the piece in common, reveals the flexibility that Pavone finds in folk material. On the Tzadik disc, it unfolds into a stately art song; here, mournful low tones turn as bushy as a wolfs winter coat under the influence of amplification. Pavone is, as ever, scrupulously focused, wringing everything she can from one piece of material before moving on." - Bill Meyer, The Wire magazine.

Artist: QUIN, DOUGLAS
Title: Fathom
Format: LP
Label: Taiga
Country: USA
Price: $23.00
"Douglas Quin is a U.S. sound designer, naturalist, public radio commentator, educator, and music composer. For over 20 years Quin has traveled widely, documenting natural soundscapes -- from Antarctic ice to Arctic tundra and from African savannah to Amazon rainforest. His recordings of endangered and disappearing habitats represent one of the most unique and extensive collections anywhere. Quin recently created the sound design for and mixed Werner Herzogs Academy Award® nominated film, Encounters At the End of the World. He contributed to the sound design for Spore, a game from Maxis/Electronic Art, and has also worked on exhibits for the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of Natural History, American Museum of Natural History, and the Polish Academy of Sciences, among others. Quins Fathom brings together four extended underwater soundscapes -- two each from the Arctic and Antarctic. The recordings have been gathered over a period of 15 years, capturing an extraordinary palette of sonic voices, events, spaces, and textures. To the human ear, these soundscapes are haunting and otherworldly; yet they are very much of this world -- out of ear-reach. The tracks are minimally-edited and are his first field recordings to be archived on vinyl. Included with the release is a sealed envelope containing an insert with specific locations, animals, and other elements heard, giving listeners the option to absorb sound with or without association. The envelope is printed with liner notes and comments from Dutch journalist and music critic René van Peer. Mastered by James Plotkin, cut direct to metal and pressed on 200 gram virgin-vinyl, Fathom comes packaged in custom letter-pressed materials and is presented as a limited edition of 1,000 copies." -Taiga

Artist: TIMELESS PULSE
Title: Trio
Format: Double LP
Label: Taiga
Country: USA
Price: $29.00
"The Timeless Pulse trio is Pauline Oliveros (accordion), with percussionists George Marsh and Jennifer Wilsey. Released in honor of the 20th annual Deep Listening Retreats held this year in Camallera, Spain and Petaluma, California, this is the third Timeless Pulse album. Formed in 1991 during a residency at the Deep Listening Institute, the full ensemble, including Thomas Buckner and David Wessel, has released two live recordings on CD: Live At CNMAT and Quintet. This is the first time this entity has been stripped down to a trio, recorded in a studio and released on vinyl. Divided into four sides with titled subsections, the album includes guests Ione and Joyce Kouffman contributing spoken word and cello on "Real As Any Dream." Mastered for vinyl by Kenny Evans at Mesa Recording, cut direct to metal and pressed on 200 gram virgin vinyl, this double LP is limited to 500 copies. It comes packaged in the custom designed slipcover and jacket with double-wide spines used for the Deep Listening Band Then & Now Now & Then 2LP. The slipcover features two exquisite photographs and is dual-finished with a gloss front and uncoated back. The jacket is printed with metallic ink, has a flooded pocket and features an essay by Amy Beal, Professor of Music at the University of California, Santa Cruz." - Tiaga. "The sound world within which Timeless Pulse Trio prefers to work: sustained sounds like Paulines accordion drones, gongs, bowed cymbals, ornamented by rattles, bells and the cracks and pops of the drum set and struck resonant objects ... These recordings emanate from a culture of active listening, as promoted and practiced by this trio, as well as by many other ensemble-based improvisers and meditative musical practices around the globe. The heart of free improvisation rests in the act of listening, and in the discovery inherent to that process." - Amy Beal.

Title: Space Elements Vol. 1
Format: LP
Label: Taiga
Country: USA
Price: $16.00
"This is the third in Rafael Torals Space Program series of releases -- his long-term research project launched in 2004, through which he has unearthed an innovative approach and a complete re-thinking of how electronic music is conceived and experienced. Using custom experimental instruments, Toral performs electronic music concerned with "phrasing and swing" and performing strange melodies with physicality, movement and gesture in flux. The result is something youre unlikely to have heard before, a kind of alien electronic jazz. After the acclaimed, orchestral Space and the follow-up Space Solo 1, this is the first volume of the Space Elements series, each release being focused on one kind of instrument, on small settings and including collaborations. Space Elements Vol. I features Rute Praça (cello), Margarida Garcia (electric double-bass), Sei Miguels amazing percussionist César Burago, and David Toop (flute), besides a short appearance by Sei Miguel himself. From Torals liner notes: "Having found that jazz is the field of musical knowledge where disciplined decision-making is most developed, this music is more informed by jazz than by any other. The Space Program emphasizes articulating silence and sound, by structuring musical discourse on experimental instruments with a simple and clear sonic identity. To my surprise, I found no historical precedents to this practice, being that it draws practically no information from electronic music history (which is grounded on different thinking patterns), and it draws very little from jazz history as well, since the instruments I use are inadequate to play any music based on the Western system. I regard this approach to jazz (meaning a system of individual decision-making from the standpoint of free-spectrum live electronics) as a new and exciting field of creative possibilities. I called it post-free jazz electronic music." Space Elements Vol. I was mastered direct to metal and pressed on clear 200 gram virgin vinyl in a limited edition of 500 copies. The jacket was designed by Helder Luís at No Type and features a collage by contemporary artist João Paulo Feliciano. CD version forthcoming on Staubgold." - Taiga

Title: Space Elements Vol. II
Format: LP
Label: Taiga
Country: USA
Price: $16.00
"Space Elements Vol. II is the fourth release in Rafael Torals ongoing project, the Space Program. Following the first Elements release, this volume features a new set of collaborators: Evan Parker (soprano sax), Manuel Mota (guitar), Afonso Simões (drums), Stefano Tedesco (vibraphone), João Paulo Feliciano (Rhodes piano), and Ruben Costa (digital synthesizer), as well as returning guests Sei Miguel (trumpet), César Burago (percussion), Fala Mariam (trombone), and Rute Praça (cello). Space Elements Vol. II displays a melodic quality that, along with a refined management of silence, marks a new area and consolidates the Space Programs complex network. Its spaciousness is explained in Torals liner notes: "While finding ways to make decisions on sound emission, it became evident to me that such sounds should have a reason to exist, they should be essential and necessary." Dan Warburtons writing in The Wire about Space fits Space Elements Vol. II perfectly: "The melodic logic that drives certain instruments within Space also recalls birdsong, with dense, convoluted runs of twittering melody ending in single piping notes, as spontaneous as Messiaens birdsong transcriptions were painstaking and meticulous." Torals music is a jazz-inspired re-evaluation of live electronics: "Despite working in a sound world that is cosmetically closer to R2D2s vocabulary than Louis Armstrongs or John Coltranes, Toral has claimed a kinship to jazz because it models instant music making within a disciplined framework." (Bill Meyer, Dusted); "Toral is looking for nothing less than a totally fresh language to work in" (The Wire). Space Elements Vol. II was mastered direct to metal from 24-bit files and pressed on clear 200 gram virgin-vinyl. With design by Helder Luis at NOTYPE, the LP features a collage by João Paulo Feliciano. Presented in a limited edition of 500." - Taiga.
