Artist: BARN OWL
Title: Ancestral Star
Format: LP
Label: Thrill Jockey
Country: USA
Price: $15.00
"Evan Caminiti (guitars, vocals) and Jon Porras (guitars, vocals, drums, harmonium) met in San Francisco in 2006 and immediately started playing music together. Over the next four years, the two gradually sculpted a vast collection of hazy desert sky meditations -- ominous, barren expanses of music for desert walks at dusk, and dark, pastoral passages embellished with psychedelic and atmospheric wash. A mixture between devotional ragas and dusty stomp with atmosphere and production that references shoegaze and black metal influences. Ancestral Star, their third LP, marks the evolution of the Barn Owl sound into a territory where it has become wholly its own, transcending the sum of its influences and taking on a life of its own. At the same time, it is a more realized extension of that sound. Caminiti and Porras paid close attention to the composition of each track and its flow within the album as a whole. Engaging throughout, every moment contributes to an overall feeling of mysterious desert expanse and a sonic narrative that unfurls like a cinematic metaphysical western." -Thrill Jockey. 2011 repress. Title: Lost In the Glare
Format: LP
Label: Thrill Jockey
Country: USA
Price: $17.00
"Lost in the Glare is Barn Owls second album for Thrill Jockey, and follows quickly on the heels of their acclaimed 12" EP Shadowland. Like Shadowland the album was recorded to tape by Phil Manley in San Franciscos Lucky Cat Studios. Lost in the Glare is made up of material composed over the course of a year and recorded in sessions throughout the winter of 2011. At the heart of the albums sound is the dual guitar interaction between Caminiti and Porras, a spiraling web of interlocking gestures that give way to bone rattling, monolithic progressions and dusty drifts. The mostly finger picked guitars weave in and out of each other in precise movements that recall the hypnotic influence of American minimalists. The harmonium that was prevalent on previous recordings has been replaced on Lost in the Glare with the undulations of a Farfisa organ. The songs here are deep, cosmic excursions. Rich in dynamics, the record possesses a transcendental tone through both a densely layered combination of electric and acoustic instruments and walls of melting amplifiers and feedback alchemy. The lines between strict structure and ordered chaos blur as third-eye opening e-bowed drones explode like beams of light and corrode into crumbling distortion, baking tones that sizzle like brittle bones left in the desert sun." -Thrill Jockey

Title: Shadowland
Format: 12"
Label: Thrill Jockey
Country: USA
Price: $15.00
"The new material on Shadowland takes inspiration from the devotional sounds of Popol Vuh and Alice Coltrane and also possesses the pitch black weightlessness of Fushitsusha and early Tangerine Dream. With waves of guitar soaring over liquid synthesizers tones, Barn Owl combine lush, melancholic serenity with cacophonous, deconstructed guitar to exhibit a visceral meeting of light and dark. Cyclical themes were explored heavily: mantric guitar processions, swelling bass waves, and fluttering tremolo hypnotism. Shadowland was recorded by Phil Manley (Trans Am) in San Francisco. For the overall sound of the EP, the band focused on using monolithic stacks of tube amps and sent guitars and synthesizers alike through them and utilized intense amounts of stereo delay." -Thrill Jockey

Title: V
Format: LP
Label: Thrill Jockey
Country: USA
Price: $20.00
"Barn Owl has always specialized in devotional darkness, pushing desert rock into previously unexplored, murky territories. V marks a shift in approach for the duo of Jon Porras and Evan Caminiti. The pair augmented their arsenal of guitars and effects with an array of electronics, vastly expanding the albums sounds and textures. Special attention was given to implied rhythms nestled within dense slow building environments, giving the album a rhythmic presence, albeit one that is buried beneath intricate layers. Theirs is a ghostly rhythm, almost beyond reach." -Thrill Jockey.

Artist: BLACK PUS
Title: All My Relations
Format: LP
Label: Thrill Jockey
Country: USA
Price: $19.00
"Black Pus is Brian Chippendale, who rose to prominence as the drummer of noise rock titans Lightning Bolt and Mindflayer. All My Relations is constant forward motion and audible physicality. Chippendales furious drumming style is ever present and instantly recognizable, but the pop element, which Chippendale explored in more contained ways on earlier Black Pus releases, is more fully integrated. Tracks like 1000 Years and Hear No Evil bear a snarl and a smile, the sound of wild abandon that is both aggressive and inviting. Chippendale creates maximalist music out of the simple elements of drums, vocals, and an oscillator triggered by the kick drum, looping and repeating phrases, and rhythms in a way that can only be called meditative." -Thrill Jockey.

Title: The Svelteness of Boogietude
Format: CD
Label: Thrill Jockey
Country: USA
Price: $15.00
"The Svelteness of Boogietude is Brother JTs debut on Thrill Jockey and Bryon Coley (from whom he aquired the Brother JT moniker) called it his most oustanding effort yet. The album is a typical of JTs output in certain ways -- rockers mixed with ballads, all of them crafted with causal elegance -- but there are new elements here as well. In particular, theres an attention to the legacy of later-period T. Rex, which results in tunes that kick total ass. Again Byron Coley, having seen Bolan play during his Zinc Alloy/Zip Gun Boogie period, went so far as to claim that JTs approach to this stuff equals that of the master -- huge riff-based anthems that balance glam dynamics with mystical history on the head of a pin." -Thrill Jockey.

Artist: D. CHARLES SPEER
Title: Arghiledes
Format: LP
Label: Thrill Jockey
Country: USA

Artist: D. CHARLES SPEER & THE HELIX
Title: Leaving the Commonwealth
Format: LP
Label: Thrill Jockey
Country: USA
Price: $17.00
"Leaving the Commonwealth is the third full length by D. Charles Speer & the Helix and features their most accomplished playing and songwriting yet, setting a high watermark for narrative honky tonk rock at this late date. Inspired by swaggering, outrageous and engaging sonic tales like Cowboy Jack Clements Millers Cave, this album features byzantine songs which flow surprisingly quickly and with natural grace. The album opener Razorbacked emits nourish cinematic imagery and twists which are matched with music sparked from a wasted mid 70s cassette from Peaches or Turtles. Numerous musical luminaries, including Freddie King and Clifton Chenier, are invoked and celebrated in song. Other tracks like Cumberland and Battle of the Wilderness are historically detailed and geographically specific chronicles. Dense tones flow from all corners, with guitar sounds reminiscent of Fripp or Manzanera on one end and the pedal steel tones of Emmons and Mooney on another. Beautifully recorded by Jason LaFarge of Seizures Palace in the urban environs of Brooklyn, this album is southern by lyrical setting, country by instrumental arrangement, rocking through its rhythmic heft and most certainly contemporary in attitude." -Thrill Jockey.

Artist: DATE PALMS
Title: The Dusted Sessions
Format: LP
Label: Thrill Jockey
Country: USA
Price: $19.00
"Date Palms revolve around the core duo of Gregg Kowalsky (keyboards, electronics) and Marielle Jakobsons (violin, flute, electronics). They employ traditional rock instrumentation to create music informed by Indian classical music, country, minimalism, and spiritual jazz, arriving at a style that is wholly their own. On their third album, The Dusted Sessions, the duo expanded the line-up to include Ben Bracken on electric bass, Michael Elrod on tanpura, and Noah Philips on electric guitar (a first for the band). Kowalsky and Jakobsons are both accomplished solo musicians in their own right: Kowalsky has released ambient albums on Kranky as well as a collaborative release with Josef Van Wissem on Amish, and Jakobsons has released music on the Digitalis and Students of Decay labels. Date Palms uses the sound and imagery of the dustbowl and the American West to express something truly cosmic and unique within the already highly individualistic Bay Area underground." -Thrill Jockey.

Title: Dawn In 2 Dimensions
Format: LP

Price: $17.00
"After the dark conceptual ambience of Beyond the 4th Door, the members of Eternal Tapestry decided the time was right to do an album embracing their live show - blistering psych rock filled with lyrical guitar soloing and a caveman approach to rhythm, an oddly euphoric state where melancholia is blasted by ecstatic noise. Compiled from a variety of sessions at Tapestry Space throughout the spring of 2011 (some of this material first found a home on the two fall tour tapes), this set of songs has been the foundation for the past year of Eternal Tapestry gigs." -Thrill Jockey.

Title: Night Gallery
Format: LP
Label: Thrill Jockey
Country: USA
Price: $17.00
"The session took place in a large TV studio on the UT campus, with the band setting up in a big circle. The line-up was Dewey Mahood and Nick Bindeman on guitars, Jed Bindeman on drums, Ryan Carlile on tenor sax, Yoni Kifle on bass, and Cameron Stallones on keyboard and trademark flute. After a brief discussion of mood, the six musicians improvised together for 45 minutes continuously. The music is heard as played that evening - no overdubs, and only a few edits to create a four section suite for the LP release. The piece is titled Night Gallery, in homage to the surreal early 1970s TV show produced by Rod Serling of Twilight Zone fame. It was this program that the six musicians fell asleep to, and woke up with, during their five day stay in Austin." -Thrill Jockey.

Artist: HIGGS, DANIEL
Title: Say God
Format: Double LP
Label: Thrill Jockey
Country: USA
Price: $19.00
"In recent years, Higgs has released a number of solo outings that can only be described as the ultimate in isolation, worlds away from the hypnotic, communal rock of his band, Lungfish. Higgs follows up the 2007 album/book release Atomic Yggdrasil Tarot with his new double album Say God. Say God is an album of gospel songs and poems as presently received by this Daniel Higgs. Recorded with the help and enthusiasm of David Andrew Sitek, who graciously provided this Daniel Higgs with an environment in which to prosper and enjoy the adventure of recording, or, if you will, the ensnaring of songs as they migrate through time and mind, that they might be heard many places at once, with the singer absent. Song seeds cast abroad, that their message, The Advent Of The Songway, the Way Across, might take root, twist and fruit, light for all. It is the simple hope of this Daniel Higgs that the album Say God may be of any use to the listener, may serve the listener, may accompany the listener in clairaudient fellowship." -Thrill Jockey

Artist: MOUNTAINS
Title: Choral
Format: Double LP
Label: Thrill Jockey
Country: USA
Price: $17.00
"Mountains is Brendon Anderegg and Koen Holtkamp, friends since their middle school days. The duo were brought together by mutual artistic and musical interests, and both ended up at the school of the Art Institute of Chicago. It was during this time that they began exchanging musical ideas and compositions which led to them founding the Apestaartje label in 1999. As their collaborations and individual projects blossomed, they decided to create Mountains as a vehicle for live performance. A love of sculpting sound in front of an audience is at the heart of Mountains. The groups third album, Choral, (their first self-titled release and second album Sewn were both on Apestaartje), is the culmination of their work to date and a balanced mix of the first two efforts. Mountains is often compared to artists such as Brian Eno and Fennesz citing their extended melodies and their unique broad guitar work. Mountains seamlessly blend pastoral electronic sounds with both field recordings and a plethora of acoustic instruments. The resulting soundscapes are broad in scope and rich in detail. The effect is incredibly sublime and hypnotic as the sounds slowly wrap themselves around each other and alter themselves in the mind of the listener. Choral is a uniquely soothing and addicting listening experience and an aural crazy quilt: warm and inviting with many details to discover and explore." - Thrill Jockey.

Artist: RHYTON
Title: S/T
Format: LP
Label: Thrill Jockey
Country: USA
Price: $15.00
"Rhyton is an experimental/improv/psych trio based in Brooklyn that features Dave Shuford (D. Charles Speer and the Helix, No Neck Blues Band), Jimy SeiTang (Psychic Ills) and Spencer Herbst (Messages, Matta Llama) LP version is limited to only 500 copies worldwide and includes a postcard insert and free download coupon. Rhyton pours out a sonic libation unto the liberated world. Waveforms ring out, alternately frozen and blazing, wrenched from an improvisational method. They seek to loosen the gaze so as to widen focus, taking the unity in hand, not grabbing for the micro-constituent. Using the dynamic levels of rock, Rhyton carve out an edifice of sound on their debut LP that centers upon repetition and modal excursion. Recorded and mixed by Jason Meagher at his Black Dirt Studio, this self-titled release is culled from a highly fruitful three day recording session. Seeking to capture the cutting intensity level of their live performances, the band takes the ethos of full engagement. The multiple amp setup at hand in the studio helps imbue the ear with "second hearing". The split stereo, dual amped electric leads utilized throughout the record are best experienced on tracks like "Pontian Grave" and "Teke" where phase and tremolo patterns bounce and surge from ear to ear, warping senses of both time and space. These two distinct sound sources are a manifestation of dual perspectives derived from a single emanation: this is not the fracturing of a voice, but rather its multiplying into a unified but complimentary chorale as different delay lengths and distortion levels cohere into an ensemble greater than its parts. On "Dale Odaliski" the rock trio trappings are stripped away as a booming tom tom, oscillators and delay loops evoke a kind technological primitivism that seems akin to a message from a shattered, distant future. Extreme attention to auditory detail is apparent throughout the album, as blasts of varied gain stages writhe within fields of phased cymbals and bass throbs. Taken from repose to ekstasis - as mental impulse reigns above, so the body below records. Rhyton is a band with an organic genesis, born from late night rap sessions at a local Brooklyn watering hole. Heads of certain vibe gathered together to tap into the underlying flux form of transportational music. Dave Shuford (D. Charles Speer, No Neck Blues Band) had been knee deep in research and practice in the realm of middle eastern musics during the recording of his solo LP Arghiledes. From that album, the track "The Heavy Heart of Ando-Yeap" was used as a leaping off point for the gestation of Rhyton. Shuford brought his personal selection of varied string instruments to the table, seeking to create a heavier electric syntax for mandolin, saz and baritone guitar. Jimy SeiTang (Psychic Ills) emerged as a sonic surgeon, creating wave patterns with his bass and pulses of tape delay tales. Spencer Herbst (Messages, Matta Llama) injected his flowing, highly energetic style of percussion and brought in visual conundrums by way of videocassette. An instant near-telepathic bond was established, making improvisations seem like composed forays even to the closest confidants. With variants and heads situated as a point of departure, Rhyton explores the inner workings of the ear and seeks the latent brain bulge within the listener." -Thrill Jockey.

Artist: ROSE WITH D. CHARLES SPEER & THE HELIX, JACK
Title: Ragged and Right
Format: 12"
Label: Thrill Jockey
Country: USA
Price: $15.00
"This slab of gripping sound was brought about by Jack Roses exuberant love of lowdown music. Inspired by the Mordicai Jones/Link Wray 3 Track Shack sessions, the idea for this collaboration was germinated while Rose was traveling through the heartland on a tour with D. Charles Speer & the Helix in spring 2008. Musicians used to the road are familiar with the phenomenon wherein a certain tape or recording becomes the thematic soundtrack to the tour at hand. In this case, daily doses of Scorpio Woman and In the Pines as performed by Link Wray became the touchstones for their travels together. Jack got so excited by the vibes emanating from these songs that he thought to break with his usual acoustic approach and get some electricity in his life again. So he enlisted the Speer band to join in some unhinged and unrepentant fun in the studio. Recorded using an all live, no overdub approach, the resultant session was deemed an all time favorite experience by everyone lucky enough to partake in it. A gleaming bottle of Buffalo Trace helped shepherd us through the dark hours of the night, and in turn that spirit animal adorns the front cover of the record. As producer, Jason Meagher was able to capture the visceral rough and tumble feel that invigorated his Black Dirt Studio in the dog days of August 2008. Featuring the original lineup of D. Charles Speer & the Helix in peak form and rare lap steel and Telecaster stylings from Rose, Ragged And Right displays a vibrancy and depth of feeling that is striking and unforgettable." -Thrill Jockey

Title: Luck In The Valley
Format: LP
Label: Thrill Jockey
Country: USA
Price: $23.00
"Limited repress of 500 copies on RTI 180 gram vinyl presented in an old-style tip-on jacket with a hand-pasted letterpressed cover. Includes download coupon. Like all pre-war recordings and all of Roses releases, this album was recorded live. It was not created using overdubs but rather by recording a few takes and selecting the best performance out of those. Rose stated, I wanted the songs to have an immediacy and spontaneity as they were being recorded. All the musicians chosen for the record know how to play the songs without overworking the material, but at the same time creating memorable accompaniments on the spot." -Thrill Jockey

"Stygian Stride is Jimy SeiTang, a New York based musician in the No Neck Blues Band axis who, as a member of Psychic Ills and most currently with Rhyton, was brought up in the midst of the groundswell of avant-garde and improvised psychedlic music in New York City over the past decade. On this, his debut solo release, SeiTang has moved away from rock music completely, instead turning his attention to gauzy electronic music reminiscent of Gas and the classic era of Mille Plateaux and Chain Reaction, with nods to Manuel Göttsching and Tangerine Dream." - Thrill Jockey.

Title: West
Format: LP
Label: Thrill Jockey
Country: USA
Price: $17.00
"It is easy to see why these would appeal to Wooden Shjips, as their music lends itself to exploration. It is both transformative and transporting, the sum being far greater than its parts. The steady driving rhythms are the elliptical motion machine driven by the often thick and distorted guitar lines, melodic and boundless. Where they may lead cannot be anticipated but following them is exhilarating. It is all about getting there, the destination, while the experience of getting there is an adventure. It is the guitar lines that guide both the listener and the band on the literal and metaphorical journey into the vastness. The ghostly vocals, obscured by dense layers of instruments surrounding them, are alluring with their airy mystery. This elusive quality further draws the listener in, while they attempt to grasp at their meaning. While indebted to both the psych music of the 60s and mid-70s, electric Neil Young, and even the induced travels of Spacemen 3, the Wooden Shjips music is modern and in every way their own. West is an epic journey to the edge and beyond." -Thrill Jockey
