Artist: ELEH/NANA APRIL JUN
Title: Observations & Momentum
Format: LP
Label: Touch
Country: UK
Price: $19.00
"The Touch label presents the Observations & Momentum split LP as a great opportunity to hear noise minimalist Eleh and Swedish visual/sound artist Christofer Lämgren aka Nana April Jun at their finest. Nana April Juns track "Sun Wind Darkness Eye" is taken from the album The Ontology Of Noise (TONE 037CD), particularly because it stands out as being perfect for a vinyl edition. In the same time-frame, the series of releases by Eleh on Important Records attracted the Touch labels attention. These homages to La Monte Young, Pauline Oliveros and Charlemagne Palestine, as vinyl-only limited editions, stunned with their acuity and passion for detail. There was something acutely other in their sound. Eleh, also, is an artist who prefers the work to speak for itself, and has other provocative ideas about noise. The digital is questioned by a commitment to a working practice based around analog tone-generators and letter-press printed covers. The Important Records/Taiga releases are now sought-after with a passion by anyone who recognizes something truly special occurring. On this recording, Eleh develops the waveforms that the Important Records series started. The split vinyl format is a great meeting point for this idea of digital persona and analog privacy. The effect, it is hoped, is for the vinyl to represent a digital question: that this LP summons up a universal sound and an intimate sphere of operations, which is, of course, a continuing dilemma. Limited edition of 1,000 copies. Art & photography by Jon Wozencroft." -- Touch.

Artist: FENNESZ
Title: Venice
Format: Double LP
Label: Touch
Country: UK
Price: $21.00
“Special 10th anniversary edition & first time available on vinyl. Gatefold double LP release -- 14 tracks. Artwork and photography by Jon Wozencroft. Featuring David Sylvian (vocals) and Burkhard Stangl(guitar). Venice, the fourth studio album by Christian Fennesz, finds electronic music at a crossroads between its early status as digital subculture, and the feeling that there has to be something more, an emotional quality that rises above noise and moves towards melody and rapture. It was voted No. 3 in The Top 50, The Wire, December 2004, was album of the week at BBCi on its release and remains Christian Fenneszs best-selling record to date. Prefix (USA) noted: "Although Fenneszs breakout record Endless Summer was followed by a live release and a collaboration with Jim ORourke and Peter Rehberg as Fenn OBerg, Venice is the true heir to that albums ascendant pop. Venice is not as unabashedly poppy as its predecessor (the lack of Beach Boysreferences can attest to that), but still mines much the same vein. It was marked by critics at the time as a move away from the relatively robotic music spawned by the IDM craze of the late nineties. Instead, its melodic, emotive tracks foresaw an electronic music that could be purely human." Pitchfork Media (USA), in a lengthy review, also noted: "Venices quality extends beyond its sound. Touch proprietor Jon Wozencroft -- through his breathtaking design and photography -- continues to fight the good fight against records-as-pure-data by making the CD a value-added prospect." and The Declaration Online (Web): "Two blue empty row boats left listless on rippling water. Red orange green riverbed foliage reflected in the waters gauzy oil slick surface. An airport enveloped in dull gray stratus and snow. Upon seeing the photography and packaging accompanying Christian Fenneszs latest recording, Venice, it is clear that the record label Touch remains intent on not simply putting out records but creating audio-visual imprints dedicated to inextricably tying sound and vision.”” - Touch.

The artists first-rate assembly of data, diagrams and video stills create moments of graphic intensity that make the white spaces of the pages surprisingly dynamic. The book is pure pleasure to hold.         Formula [Book + DVD] reflects precise design and the artists flawless selection of surfaces and materials. An exceptional publication, it provides a heightened sensory experience in a similar way to his concerts, installations and sound works." - Touch.

Artist: JECK, PHILIP
Title: Cardinal
Format: Double LP
Label: Touch
Country: UK
Price: $21.00
Philip Jeck writes: "To make this record I used Fidelity record players, Casio keyboards, Ibanez bass guitar, Sony MiniDisc players, Ibanez and Zoom effects pedals, assorted percussion, a Behringer mixer and it was edited it at home with MiniDisc players and on a laptop computer." "...and they sparkled like burnished brass" "Out of the depths of our complaints, it could be all so simple. To be never fooled by the finesse of a long-yearned for solidity, but in the momentary aplomb of a sleepy walk threading through familiar streets wed hum our way, alto, baritone and tenor toward some harmonious end. An effect like some wonderful recollection of one or other of those technicolour movies. Not real for sure, but if you are in the mood... "I would like to acknowledge the influence the writer Marilynne Robinson has had on this work. I would recommend reading any/all of her four novels and also When I was a Child I Read Books (Virago, 2012). This collection of essays includes “Austerity as Ideology,” which dissects prevailing economic thinking, and “Open Thy Hand Wide,” which continues with a celebration of liberal thinking as Generosity (and also turned over my received knowledge of Calvinism). Her ability to convey a love of humanity and sense of wonder about the great mystery of existence in her writing has, since I first read a book of hers, found a way into the way I think about my work -- not illustrating but meditating upon." (April 2015)
“Philip Jeck works with old records and record players salvaged from junk shops, turning them to his own purposes. He really does play them as musical instruments, creating an intensely personal language that evolves with each added part of a record. Jeck makes genuinely moving and transfixing music in which one hears the art, not the gimmick. He started working with record players and electronics in the early 80s and has made soundtracks and toured with many dance and theatre companies in addition to his solo concert work. His best-known work, Vinyl Requiem(with Lol Sargent), a performance for 180 50s/60s record players, won the Time Out Performance Award in 1993. In 2010, Jeck won a Paul Hamlyn Foundation Composers Award. This gatefold double LP comes with a download code for Jecks "Live in Caen," recorded by Franck Dubois on February 28, 2015, at Impressions Multiples #4 (ésam Caen/Cherbourg), with thanks to Thierry Weyd.” - Touch.

Artist: MENCHE, DANIEL
Title: Quanta Of Light
Format: 12"
Label: Touch
Country: UK
Price: $16.00
"In a genre known for its randomness and chaotic structure, Daniel Menche has established himself as a musician with an uncharacteristic sense of focus and determination. Rather than creating "noise," he strives for order and cohesiveness. His work originates from the idea that there is no restriction to potential sound sources, especially in terms of a sounds potential sonic energy. Subtle and patient compositions rely on long, dense layers of droning sounds, while abrasive pieces rely on sounds amplified and processed to extreme levels, pushing the full spectrum of frequencies to the threshold. Intense, percussive sound works resonate a primal chaos while gracefully reaching towards something beyond "noise." Through this intensity, Menche bridges the gap between sound and listener, a one-on-one, personal impact with pure sound. The greater the intent, the greater the intensity, and intensity is based upon the blood rising in speed and heat through our bodies. This is dedicated music that expresses the undisciplined purity of emotion and intensity." -Touch.

Title: Touch Three
Format: Triple CD
Label: Touch
Country: UK
Price: $23.00
"This is Phill Niblocks third release on the Touch label. Phill Niblock is a New York-based minimalist composer and multi-media musician and director of Experimental Intermedia, a foundation born in the flames of 1968s barricade hopping. He has been a maverick presence on the fringes of the avant garde ever since. In the history books Niblock is the forgotten Minimalist. His influence has had more impact on younger composers such as Susan Stenger, Lois V. Vierk, David First, and Glenn Branca." - Touch.

Artist: UNICAZURN
Title: Transpandorem
Format: LP
Label: Touch
Country: UK
Price: $18.00
"UnicaZürn, David Knight and Stephen Thrower, build their long, ceaselessly evolving musical compositions through a process of improvisation, followed by careful editing and processing. Their music, drawn from subconscious associations while recording, is frequently aquatic or oceanic in overall mood and texture. Knight has spent most of his life living on the banks of the Thames while Thrower resides on the East Sussex coast, and their musical flights of imagination tend toward rolling river dynamics and open seas of synthesized sound. For UnicaZürn, tidal imagery, oceanic forms and the slow rhythms of coastal water are a recurring structural presence, with strong associations of rootlessness, of being far away from home. The inability of human lungs to breathe water endows rivers and seas with a special poetics: a boundary between two different but inter-related states. On the one hand, solidity, clarity, definition; On the other, fluidity, uncertainty, dissolution. The sense of a threshold between opposites gives rise to an elusive otherness, suggesting a portal through which the everyday world can be escaped. Death under the water, the survivors of a lost kingdom clinging to the rocks of an unfamiliar island, a coastal boat ride into deepest abstraction, a deserted beach expressing a world outside reality. A sexual frisson too: a hovering at the brink, poised at the turbulent edge of pleasure, swept away into oblivion. Theres a darkness in the sea, even if illuminated by the most dazzling sunshine. Open horizons shows the clutter of human life to be transient, and as the sea offers a dizzying sense of the eternal. Aquatic sensibility, oceanic timescales: the action of the salt sea beating on the shore. Beaches are cosmic, elemental. UnicaZürns core instrumentation blends analog synthesiser, mellotron and electric piano with electric guitar and clarinet. Both Thrower and Knight draw upon their love and wide experience of electronic music, from the outer shores of Stockhausen to the outer space-ways of Tangerine Dream. In addition, Knight is renowned for his pioneering multi-textured fretwork with Danielle Dax and his ambient guitar settings for Lydia Lunch, while Throwers reed playing provided a distinctive melancholy in Coil and emerged as electro-acoustic texture in Cyclobe. The title "Pale Salt Seam" is drawn from the poem "Night-Song of the Andalusian Sailors" by Federico García Lorca. Parts of "Pale Salt Seam" were recorded live at the Ironmongers Row Baths on March 2nd, 2013. Additional production assistance by Ivan Pavlov." - Touch.

Title: El Tren Fantasma-The Signal Man
Format: 12"
Label: Touch
Country: UK
Price: $12.00
"Chris Watson presents two special mixes for vinyl from his El Tren Fantasma (TO 042CD) release. A radio program was broadcast on BBC Radio 4 on Saturday, Oct. 30, 2010, produced by Sarah Blunt, and described as "a thrilling acoustic journey across the heart of Mexico from Pacific to Atlantic coast using archive recordings to recreate a rail passenger service which no longer exists." Its now more than a decade since FNM operated its last continuous passenger service across country. Chris Watson spent a month on board the train with some of the last passengers to travel this route. As sound recordist, he was part of the film crew working on a program in the BBC TV series Great Railways Journeys. Now, the journey of the "ghost train" is recreated, evoking memories of a recent past, capturing the atmosphere, rhythms and sounds of human life, wildlife and the journey itself along the tracks of one of Mexicos greatest engineering projects." -Touch.

Title: Outside the Circle of Fire
Format: CD
Label: Touch
Country: UK
Price: $15.00
"Chris Watsons second CD is a dramatic contrast to the spacious atmospheres of Stepping into the Dark (Touch 27, 1996). Featuring 22 close-up recordings of animals, birds and insect life, Outside the Circle of Fire enlarges our awareness of the sound universe, intimate with voices from the past. There is an intensity here that television pictures cannot conjure. These are the sounds of secret languages, particular events that have been recorded as close up as possible to try and reveal something of their individual beauty, rhythm, eloquence and sheer power. Several of the sounds would be inaudible or radically degraded more than a few meters from the animal. Yet others collectively use the acoustics of their habitat to modulate the message. They exist, however, whether we hear them or not -- close up details of signals that are beyond our reach outside the circle of fire." - Touch

Title: Stepping Into The Dark
Format: CD
Label: Touch
Country: UK
Price: $15.00
1996 release, repressed! "Watsons lead instrument is the tape recorder. After working with Cabaret Voltaire and The Hafler Trio, he became sound recordist for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. He has since joined a film and video production company, working for BBC wildlife documentaries and occasional feature films. The 12 recordings on Stepping into the Dark contrast a windswept forest in Glen Cannich with the gathering conversations of rooks roosting in a churchyard in Northumberland. Other atmospheres include the heat and wall of sound found on the River Mara in Kenya, fishing bats on a mangrove pool in Venezuela, the ritual dance of snipe at dusk in the Northern Hebrides... a hydrophone at 5m. depth in the Moray Firth captures the signature whistles and clicks of bottlenose dolphins." - Touch

Title: Weather Report
Format: CD
Label: Touch
Country: UK
Price: $15.00
"The weather has created and shaped all our habitats. Clearly it also has a profound and dynamic effect upon our lives and that of other animals. The three locations featured here all have moods and characters which are made tangible by the elements, and these periodic events are represented within by a form of time compression. This is Chriss first foray into composition using his location recordings of wildlife and habitats -- previously he has been concerned with describing and revealing the special atmosphere of a place by site specific, untreated location recordings. For the first time here he constructs collages of sounds, which evolve from a series of recordings made at the specific locations over varying periods of time."- Touch
