Artist: AETHENOR
Title: Betimes Black Cloudmasses
Format: LP
Label: VHF
Country: USA
Price: $14.00
"The highly-anticipated second album from VINCENT DE ROGUIN (SHORA), STEPHEN OMALLEY (SUNN0))), KTL), and DANIEL OSULLIVAN (GUAPO). Like their genre confounding debut Deep In Ocean Sunk the Lamp of Light, Betimes is an atmospheric, constantly changing piece that encompasses a mind-boggling array of different performance and processing techniques. The deeply psychedelic and moving results present a soundstage that is continually evolving, with new elements entering and leaving the fray every couple of seconds. Includes significant contributions from free percussionists NICOLAS FIELD and ALEX BABEL, who sprinkle the sound field with an almost FMP-style rush of splattering drum sound, raising the intensity of the music (without resorting to bashing). The album also features a brief but affecting vocal from ULVER mastermind KRISTOFFER RYGG, who will make his first live appearance in over a decade when AETHENOR plays the Roadburn Festival in April 2008. Aethenors third LP, featuring vocals and lyrics by David Tibet, will be released in Autumn 2008." -VHF

Title: Deep In Ocean Sunk The Lamp of Light
Format: LP
Label: VHF
Country: USA
Price: $19.00
"The debut release from the trio of STEPHEN OMALLEY (SUNN0))))), DANIEL OSULLIVAN (GUAPO), and VINCENT DE ROGUIN (SHORA). Taking its title from The Iliad, the music is deep, cosmic, and equally epic, completely unlike anything youd expect from three such heavyweights. More in the tradition of Nurse With Wounds Spiral Insana or Klaus Schulzes Cyborg than any contemporary trend, the tracks float along in a masterful collage of activity, where careful scene changes highlight OSullivans classic but artfully placed Rhodes bombs, De Roguins organ, and OMalleys guitar. Extraordinary effort has gone into editing, mastering, and shaping these pieces-they are not tossed off improvisations or "side-project" orphans. Housed in beautiful, custom jackets hand-printed by ALAN SHERRY of SIWA."

Title: En Form For Bla
Format: Double LP
Label: VHF
Country: USA
Price: $21.00
"AETHENOR is comprised of STEPHEN OMALLEY (SUNN0))), KTL), DANIEL OSULLIVAN (ULVER, MOTHLITE, GUAPO), KRISTOFFER RYGG (ULVER) and STEVE NOBLE (N.E.W., COMPANY, etc.). En Form For Bla documents the continued evolution of this unlikely collective, a collision of players from various avant, improv, metal, and "other" threads who together make a unique and arresting sound. Documenting three gigs in Oslo recorded in 2010, the album is deep and weird, with liquid sounds juddering around the occasionally identifiable percussion or Rhodes motif. In the evolution from a side project / studio group to a frequently working live act, Aethenor kept their sound intact, taking the musique-concrete-style transitions and "whats that sound" ethos of their three previous efforts directly to the stage. Noble, having spent a couple of decades playing drums with Derek Bailey and other well-known UK improvisers, moves the music along subtly, keeping much of the focus on the burbling sound mass. OMalleys guitar, an instrument of extreme viscera in Sunn0))), is used with restraint, providing occasional low menace but mostly mixing it up with OSullivans thematic lines and Ryggs sound treatments. The overall effect is atmospheric rather than sedate-something like a modern, small group version of Miles Davis classic "He Loved Him Madly" or Nurse with Wounds Spiral Insana. Other than perhaps Supersilent, no one else is working this sonic vocabulary today. Designed by OMalley, the deluxe double-LP version is pressed on white vinyl and packaged with printed inner sleeves; the CD is in a card folio. Live dates planned to follow albums release." -VHF.

Title: Hazel
Format: LP
Label: VHF
Country: USA
Price: $22.00
Includes download code. "Hazel is the fifth record from Æthenor, the group of eclectic travelers that includes Stephen OMalley (SunnO))), KTL), Daniel OSullivan (Ulver, This is Not This Heat, Grumbling Fur, etc.), Kristoffer Rygg (Ulver), and Steve Noble (Brötzmann Trio, N.E.W.) Together they bring their considerable pedigrees into play with unexpected and original results. Contradicting expectations of a massive blow-out of sound, everyone plays with remarkable, effective restraint. Atmospheric and layered, this latest release features bits and pieces of identifiable rock-moves peeking out from under a thick blanket of hard-to-identify drift. Based on live recordings made on a lengthy tour of Italy in 2010, Hazel has been extensively edited and supplemented, but without losing the elemental sound of a group playing live together. Though theres plenty of weird ambient sound to be heard, this isnt a sound- effects/pedalboard record. Like the previous En Form for Bla, Nobles drums anchor the music with spare and considered playing, sometimes lashing out with abstract punctuation, and other times laying out a Can-like groove. OMalleys guitar is also restrained, providing a bed for OSullivans constantly morphing Rhodes, synths and electronic effects. Kristoffer Rygg contributes a rousing vocal incantation to Ermanna and peppers the mix with ghostly modular details. Æthenors catalog continues to be not like anything else out there right now. Sleeve designed by Stephen OMalley." - VHF.

Artist: ASHTRAY NAVIGATIONS
Title: A Shimmering Replica
Format: LP + CD
Label: VHF
Country: USA
Price: $22.00
"This first-ever VHF release by the 21-years-running Ashtray Navigations brings one more core piece of the UK freakout underground back to the mothership. With a discography that boggles even the most ardent Discogs user and an on-point WTF graphic sensibility, Ash Nav fits perfectly into the extremely fertile and prolific scene that has produced titans like Sunroof! and Vibracathedral Orchestra. On this generous 100-minute package, Phil Todd and Melanie ODubshlaine essay a kind of guitarand- electronics exotica with burbling rhythms, Heldonlike laser guitar leads, field recordings, synth racket, etc. The totally fun take on Les Baxters all-time classic "Quiet Village" (here wittily retitled "Quite Village") is a good example of the explorer spirit at work. Considering the amount of unhinged psychedelic fuzzwah lead damage laid out across this thing, its arguably the most effusive guitar heroics record of the genre, hopefully inspiring a new generation of young rockers out there to get on the bus." - VHF.

Artist: ASTRAL SOCIAL CLUB
Title: Octuplex
Format: CD
Label: VHF
Country: USA
Price: $13.00
"After a couple years in the underground wilderness, NEIL CAMPBELLs unique ASTRAL SOCIAL CLUB returns to VHF with the squelching, restless ambience of Octuplex. The CD is split roughly in half between Harmonia/Voigt-style chuggers and sweeping swirls of instantly recognizable dronage, familiar to fans of Campbells extensive contributions to VIBRACATHEDRAL ORCHESTRA, SUNROOF! and others. His interest in techno comes out on "Caustic Roe" and "Muscle Adductor," which neatly compile the influence of recent minimal jam innovations with piles of synth and effects noise, lending the beat-driven tracks a rough, unfussy style. Other cuts like "Muegik Churn" and "Pilgrim Sunburst" swell with twittering electric birdsong and synthetic rain, the trademark sound of many Astral titles. Octuplex is full up with collaborator cameos, including the familiar (RICHARD YOUNGS, JOHN CLYDE-EVANS), and the novel (SPIDER STACY from THE POGUES!)." -VHF

Title: s/t
Format: CD
Label: VHF
Country: USA
Price: $13.00
"With this release the VHF catalog moves into triple digit territory and the label is celebrating with the first official album by NEIL CAMPBELLS (VIBRACATHEDRAL ORCHESTRA) genre-destroying ASTRAL SOCIAL CLUB unit. Following a series of instantly sold-out limited edition CDRs, Campbell agreed to select, edit and remix a collection of tracks for wider release from the groups rather exclusive catalog. VHF100 is a dense mega-mix of continually peaking sound-flow. Working a tricky hybrid ground between contemporary UK teams like Sunroof! and Vibracathedral Orchestra, and the influence of Kompakt-style pulsating electronic "techno," Astral Social Clubs music shimmers and throbs in a truly psychedelic manner. Campbell and TIRATH SINGH NIRMALA have radically re-worked these tracks to be unrecognizable from their original CDR issues, but they are instantly recognizable as part of the unrelenting Astral Social Club rainbow stream." - VHF.

Artist: BLACK SUN ROOF
Title: Feral
Format: LP + CD
Label: VHF
Country: USA
Price: $16.00
"Feral marks the return of MATTHEW BOWERs SUNROOF! (in the guise of BLACK SUN ROOF), for their first recording in five years. Quiet since 2007s blistering Panzer Division Lou Reed, the group delivers a more introspective set here, reaching back to the fuzzy, spacey sounds of releases like the epic double-CD Bliss. Among the drifting sonic washes, theres the crude, Dead C-like riffing of "Lions + Peonies" and the lock-grooved tremolo of "Son of the Blue Wolf" (referencing previous triumphs like Cloudz).  Bower says: "I have a problem with the term psychedelia [and its] negative associations of a hippie falseness. Nevertheless, my arte is, I know, deeply psychedelic in a true sense, a kind of synaesthesisia, a scrambling, an overload that seeks Samadhi in its primal gush, that will reconnect one with the all, or rather, a black psychedelia, substituting the elective current, for all...." In addition to the all-new tracks on the LP, the package also includes a bonus CD featuring a Bower-curated overview of his work. Many of the tracks on the 75-min Zebra Blood CD are from scarce or out-of-print recordings, including "Austrian Shade" from an impossible-to-find TOTAL seven-inch. Also included is the epic and exclusive new track "Spirit Animal Danzig."  Includes a bonus CD with scarce and out-of-print material from various Bower projects, plus one new track." -VHF.

Artist: FLOWER-CORSANO DUO
Title: Four Aims
Format: Double LP
Label: VHF
Country: USA
Price: $18.00
"The Four Aims is the much-anticipated second full-length by the long-running duo of MICK FLOWER (VIBRACATHEDRAL ORCHESTRA, SUNROOF, MICHAEL FLOWER BAND) and CHRIS CORSANO (FLAHERTY/CORSANO, JANDEK, BJORK, SUNBURNED). In the couple years since their debut, The Radiant Mirror (Textile), the two have toured and recorded frequently, expanding their range to include a mind-boggling array of free sound. "I, Brute Force" kicks off the record with the electrifying sound of Flowers virtuosic, heavily amplified Japan Banjo (also known as a Shaahi Baaja) over Corsanos free-wheeling percussion. Other tracks show off subtle improv moves, with both players using extended techniques to generate a wide range of unusual sounds. Corsanos technical mastery is almost without peer in his generation (Alex Neilson, maybe)-his ability to take the lessons of nearly five decades of free playing and extend them into new ranges is startling and exciting. Rather than play backup, Corsano meets Flowers strings and organ head-on with his own drum-bowing, cello, and circular-breathing-fired melodica." - VHF

Title: P.A. Blues
Format: CDR
Label: VHF
Country: USA
Price: $10.00
"Personal selection of live material compiled by Dave Pearce for "casual" release. The centerpiece is "P.A. Blues," a massive collage of bracing, full-on sound recorded at various 1994 shows. Moving through various moods and grooves, the piece is similar to the material on the out of print In Search Of Spaces/Live CD released a few years back on Hermes Corp, tho theres no overlap in the contet between the two CDs. Also included: the 1995 groups take on the oft-covered "She Moved Through The Fair, a subdued performance of "The Season Is Ours," and an uncirculated (and assaultive) 1994 instrumental rehearsal, which I believe pre-dates FSAs first live performance. In mini-gatefold. 4 tracks, 66 mins" - VHF.

Title: Canticle
Format: CD
Label: VHF
Country: USA
Price: $13.00
"An outrageous CD of prog rock from RICHARD YOUNGS and ANDREW PAINEs ILK. Unlike Youngs more "minimalist" solo records, ILK drapes his songs and voice in thick layers of heavy jams, and the piles on the production tricks, vocal layers, Steve Howe-style leads, synth bleeps, and other racket in beautifully intricate arrangements."

Title: Holy Letters
Format: CD
Label: VHF
Country: USA
Price: $14.50
"A domestic release of HIROYUKI USUIs 1990 barely circulated, underground acid-folk masterpiece. Working with guitar, vocals, vibes, harmonium, bass, drums, cello, field recordings, digeridoo, and more, Usui blends delicate folk, psychedelia, and experimental sounds into a mostly subdued but undeniably glowing suite. Includes the tracks from Usuis original CD and 7-inch package, along with a 10-minute bonus track from the original sessions. Packaged in gatefold folio sleeves with a 20-page booklet with unpublished photos and new liner notes by Usui and BEN CHASNY (SIX ORGANS OF ADMITTANCE) translated into both English and Japanese." - VHF,

Artist: MAKOTO, KAWABATA
Title: Astro Love & Infinite Kisses
Format: Double LP
Label: VHF
Country: USA
Price: $26.00
"Kawabata Makoto emerges from a period of relative quiet with his first widely available solo release in several years, the blockbuster Krautrock-flavored Astro Love & Infinite Kisses. This lovely and impressionistic record showcases the other side of Makotos outrageous works with Acid Mothers Temple. Taking cues from classics of the genre like Tangerine Dreams Phaedra and Steve Hillages Rainbow Dome Musick, "Dos Nurages" is the albums centerpiece, a 41-minute hypnotic epic, with echoplexd guitar anchoring a stream of expertly done glissando. The title track is a darker drone in the tradition of Kawabatas Inui series of releases for VHF. "Woman From Dream Island" closes the record with a thick buzz of tamboura overlaid with trippy backwards guitar, before giving way to a gentle, fingerpicked acoustic coda." - VHF.

Artist: ROSE, JACK
Title: Kensington Blues
Format: CD
Label: VHF
Country: USA
Price: $14.50
"Kensington Blues, the fourth full-length release from JACK ROSE (PELT), is an inspired mix of styles and sounds that brings his in-person steel string guitar mastery down to CD scale. This is Roses most diverse outing by far, with straight ragtime, heavy 12-string, and that sweet, sweet Weissenborn lap guitar all checking in. Honed during endless touring in 2004, the repertoire here is delivered with maximum authority in a series of first-take performances recorded in early 2005. Eight tracks, including a fine cover of John Faheys "Sunflower River Blues." - VHF

Format: LP

Price: $22.00
2016 repress. "Fourth full-length from Jack, an inspired mix of styles and sounds that brings his in-person mastery down to LP/CD scale. Kensington Blues is Jacks most diverse outing by far, with straight ragtime, heavy 12-string, and that sweet, sweet Weissenborn lap guitar all checking in. Honed during endless touring in 2004, the repertoire here is delivered with maximum authority in a series of first-take performances recorded in early 2005. Cathedral et Chartres and Calais to Dover are dense, brooding 12 string numbers, recalling the key tracks on 2004s Raag Manifestos CD. Calais features a sequence of right hand picking furious enough to evoke a dream state ala Charlemagne Palestines Strumming Music. Rappahanock River Rag and Flirtin With the Undertaker are pure syncopated ragtime, while Kensington Blues offers an almost regal take on the intersection of Anglo and American trad. The epic Now That Im A Man Full Grown was the signature piece of many of 2004s live shows, a display of mind-boggling slide invention that straddles the line of east and west ala Yaman Blues from the Opium Musick LP. In something of a surprise inclusion, Jacks take on Faheys Sunflower River Blues (long a staple of Pelt and J.R. gigs but never included on a record) is subtle and expressive, with a wonderful rise and fall that perfectly accentuates Faheys beautiful melody."- VHF

Title: Raag Manifestoes
Format: CD
Label: VHF
Country: USA
Price: $13.00
"Released in conjunction with JACK ROSEs first major European and West Coast U.S. tours. Compiled from a variety of sources, Raag Manifestos cuts across various acoustic styles much like Roses Opium Musick LP, but with a more aggressive attack. "Black Pearls from the River" and "Hart Cranes Old Boyfriends" are dense, serious assaults on the 12-string, with the intensity of the latter enhanced by IAN NAGOSKIs roaring electronic backdrop. With subtle tabla accompaniment by ERIC CARBONARA, "Crossing The Great Waters," is another epic modal journey in the style of Pelts "Road To Catawba" and Roses own "Red Horse." The traditional "Blessed Be the Name of the Lord" finishes off the CD on a calming note." - VHF.

Artist: SKULLFLOWER
Title: Carved Into Roses / Infinityland / Singles
Format: Triple CD
Label: VHF
Country: USA
Price: $22.00
"Recorded together and originally conceived as a double-CD back in the dark ages of 1995, Carved Into Roses and Infinityland find the transitioning from the heavy riffs of SKULLFLOWERs early days to a more free-form sound that continues to drive MATTHEW BOWERs many guises (TOTAL, SUNROOF!, HOTOTOGISU, MIRAG, etc.) to this day. The revamped lineup of Bower, STUART DENNISON, RUSSELL SMITH (of UK scuzz legend TERMINAL CHEESECAKE) and PHILLIP BEST whacks away at both styles simultaneously, with lumbering hooks meeting rainbows of coruscating feedback. Both records start with lengthy, two-chord modal jams, anchored by the guest organ of SIMON WICKHAM-SMITH. The Singles disc collects both sides (over 50 minutes) of the four 7-inch records that were released around the same time and made largely by the same lineup. Not exactly a "singles band," Skullflower nevertheless has more than a dozen releases on the format. The alternate take on "White Fang" is even more jagged and crackling than the one on Infinityland. "Choady Foster" and "Spent Force" are huge pools of sound. Among these more straightforward tunes are oddities like the live version of "Metallurgical King," and the two sides of the Village Sorting single, a studio recording featuring TIM HODGKINSON (HENRY COW, THE WORK) blowing the roof of the place on alto." -VHF.

Artist: SUNROOF!
Title: Bliss
Format: Double CD
Label: VHF
Country: USA
Price: $14.50
"The atmosphere of this somewhat delayed yet unstoppable annual collection from long-in-the-tooth UK vibe maestro Matthew Bower and friends (who include Neil Campbell, Rosalie Bower, and maybe some other people - honestly, who can tell?) is mostly spaced and buzzing instruments and voices hovering and floating in the dense mix, all running together like some sort of alien shortwave broadcast. Disc 1 takes off from where last years Found Star Sound left us - a mix of fuzzy guitar and organ rhythms jousting with voice, bowed strings, and unidentifiable percussion in a compressed fog. Disc 2 is a headlong rush into newish territory, with analog synth vs. birdsong, childs voice vs. sawing violin, chug vs. fizz, etc. There are many tracks on both discs that have subtle (and overt) melodic and rhythmic undercurrents suggesting a fuzz/hiss-dominated alternate-universe version of say, Harmonia or Richter Band. Probably a coincidence, but very, very appealing." - VHF.

Artist: SUNROOF!
Title: Delicate Autobahn Under Construction
Format: Double CD
Label: VHF
Country: USA
Price: $14.00
"The debut album release from MATTHEW BOWERs new trio, following the retirement of SKULLFLOWER and TOTAL, mines territory similar to Total, but with a more group-oriented communal trance arrangement. Taking cues from minimalist composers, Indian music and assorted folk musics, Sunroof uses guitar, violin, hand percussion and reeds to build up layer upon layer of stratospheric bliss, creating the perfect cloud for Bowers sometimes gentle, sometimes excoriating electric guitar to float on." - VHF

Artist: SUNROOF!
Title: Panzer Division Lou Reed
Format: CD
Label: VHF
Country: US
Price: $12.50
"Beneath the usual lovely psychedelic artwork on the cover of Panzer Division Lou Reed lurks SUNROOF!s most explosive and assaultive record ever. The key track here in the Sunroof! evolution is the opener "Slew Plateaus #1," with MICK FLOWER (VIBRACATHEDRAL ORCHESTRA) on guitar and JOHN MOLONEY (SUNBURNED HAND OF THE MAN) on drums. This live shot of electricity gradually ramps up from Flower and MATT BOWERs dueling guitars to the point where Moloneys drums come crashing in after about six minutes, leading to a furious crescendo that lasts for the remainder of the 19-minute track. "Slew Plateaus #2" is a lengthy collaboration with underground gadabout MATTIN, whose previous collabs with Tony Conrad, Bruce Russell, Eddie Prevost, et al. hopefully prepared him for the Bower wrecking ball delivered here. The other two cuts are absolutely blistering demolition work, which, in spite of their visceral impact, reach a state of zen-like stasis after a couple of minutes, a la the best of Bowers work with HOTOTOGISU." - VHF.

Title: Silver Bear Mist
Format: Double CD
Label: VHF
Country: USA
Price: $16.00
"Silver Bear Mist, SUNROOFs first release in over two years, is an epic, double-CD of inimitable buzz. Recorded during a period when guitarist MATT BOWER (SKULLFLOWER, TOTAL) was also wrtiting material for HOTOTOGISU, Silver Bear Mist diverges from previous Sunroof releases to revel in thick, billowing fuzz bombs. Includes contributions from members of VIBRACATHEDRAL ORCHESTRA and THE SKATERS." - VHF.

Title: Dabbling With Gravity And Who You Are
Format: CD
Label: VHF
Country: USA
Price: $14.50
"The latest and current pinnacle from the quintet of Neil Campbell, Bridgit Riley, Julian Bradley, Michael Flower, and Adam Davenport was assembled from recordings of their weekly sessions in Flowers kitchen. The tracks here represent the joyous, celebratory side of VCO - all forward motion, massed strings, percussion, horns, and little instruments rocketing forward in a swirl of sound. Compared to the more austere sounds of recent CDs like Lino Hi and Versatile Arab Chord Chart, the tracks here take off from the spot where the loose hippie-chant-and-drum action of collectives like Amon Düül intersects with the polyglot instrumental approach of mid-60s Sun Ra (ref. "Exotic Forest," "Shadow World," etc). "There is no chord formation that can be planned," says Bridget Hayden, "which creates elation or sadness, or any art which is profound enough to change anything fundamental about a person. There is just a resonance around us which musicians and artists are using or not using." - VHF.

Title: Joka Baya
Format: LP
Label: VHF
Country: USA
Price: $15.00
"The ever-mysterious VIBRACATHEDRAL ORCHESTRA returns from another relatively quiet period with an uncompromising set of outre jams on a trio of limited-edition LPs. Slightly reorganized around a line-up of stalwarts MICK FLOWER and ADAM DAVENPORT with frequent collaborators JOHN GODBERT (TOTAL) and JOHN MOLONEY (SUNBURNED HAND OF THE MAN), the band here stretches way, way out over these six sides. Joka Baya offers up a set of shorter pieces on the A-side in a high-fidelity style that contrasts the dark, smoky sound of the rest of the tracks. The percussive grooves are overlaid with SUNROOF!!-like shimmer, stabbing electric leads, gentle acoustic rain, and droning organ peeking through at opportune moments. The roaring side-long epic on the flip is a droning, phasing slice of psychedelia with Moloneys drums battering the tape in between long stretches of humming stasis."

Title: Rec Blast Motorbike
Format: LP
Label: VHF
Country: USA
Price: $20.00
"The mighty classic lineup of the Vibracathedral Orchestra returns with their first new music in many years. Here the quintet of Michael Flower, Neil Campbell, Bridget Hayden, Adam Davenport and Julian Bradley (joined by raconteur John Godbert) feature in a set of upbeat tracks that put the groups radical instrumental strategies into a package of full-on rock action. Recorded live using a binaural head system, the sound is nicely ragged in a you-are-there way, with scouring guitars and bleeping electronics riding atop the bands signature grooves. As with some of the bands other records, theres more than a hint of the early Velvet Underground spirit in these ten tracks. If you wish that Cale and Reed would have been more of an instrumental band, here it is." - VHF.

Title: S/T
Format: Double LP
Label: VHF
Country: USA
Price: $21.00
"VHF presents a public service reissue of this impossibly rare and choice title in the VIBRACATHEDRAL ORCHESTRA oeuvre, originally issued by the band in 2004 in an edition of 250. Featuring the "classic" lineup (MICK FLOWER, NEIL CAMPBELL, BRIDGET HAYDEN, ADAM DAVENPORT, JULIAN BRADLEY) that made Queen of Guess and Dabbling With Gravity and Who You Are, this self-titled double takes a wild ride through the inner-workings of VCOs stream of consciousness. Many of the tracks (selected from research and development jams) cut in abruptly, continuing the informal, expansive vibe of the bands other self-released items. The thick blanket of signature drone-fog is never far away, anchoring tunes that veer from early Velvets-style rock jammers ("Thrift") to swirling electronic mystery ("Clear"). On side three, "Gist" builds up a looping, guitar-led rhythm like a lost AR & Machines track, sharing the same side with the pulsing "Floetz," which rides a taut electro-pulse bolstered by group small percussion. This lengthy two-disc album concludes with the almost side-long "Minkey," featuring the full complement of VCO sound signatures in one big, hallucinatory swirl. Exclusive to this release is a 35-minute DVD of three live performances selected by Flower. A rare chance to see some cinema verite of the group in action, the performances here (shot in the UK in 2005 and 2007) are all on the rocking side, with furious drumming and guitar strangling. Perhaps best of all is Flower and Campbells optional audio commentary track (!) on "Wisdom T," providing some insight on the how and why (and some witticisms, too)." -VHF.

Title: Smoke Song
Format: LP
Label: VHF
Country: USA
Price: $15.00
"The third  of three new LPs from the VIBRACATHEDRAL ORCHESTRA. Smoke Songs more gentle exposition starts with ADAM DAVENPORTs santoor (a type of hammered dulcimer) leading the band into a lengthy mid-tempo groove on "Smoke Song," followed on the second half of the side by the short, quiet "Cholita Maria." The second sides 17-minute "Get It?" lays down the tremolo and phase in a manner reminiscent of the best Spacemen 3 comedowns, taking a pulse and riding it into organ- and percussion-fueled bliss." - VHF

Title: The Queen of Guess
Format: CD
Label: VHF
Country: USA
Price: $14.50
"While certainly VCOs most upbeat and percussive music, the nine tracks on this immense, visceral slab of rackety action run through a wide range of styles. Ramshackle Sunrise has a gamelan-like, five-note melody overlaid with a hovering drone. The Silent Socket rocks with Sister Ray-style guitar careening along side actual drums. The two 20-minute epics that bookend the record are a study in contrasts: Your Head Shone Like A Stone has a heavy, excited buzz, while the closing Goodnight Stars Goodnight Air is a gentler acoustic epilogue, gliding into the rosy future." - VHF.

Title: The Secret Base
Format: LP
Label: VHF
Country: USA
Price: $15.00
"The second of three new LPs from the VIBRACATHEDRAL ORCHESTRA.  The Secret Base starts up at full throttle, straight into a raw-sounding live outing, with MICK FLOWERs  overdriven guitar occupying the same sonic space that gives his Japan banjo / shaahi baaja workouts with CHRIS CORSANO their urgency. The sound is dark and rough, almost Xpressway-like in its claustrophobic atmosphere. The percolating krautrock stylings of "If You Cant Smoke Em" chugs along hypnotically for over 13 minutes to close out the side. The entire B-sides 20-plus minutes are devoted to the clanging free sound of "Eyes of Wood," where gamelan-like metal percussion dominates the proceedings." - VHF.

Format: CD
Label: VHF

Price: $14.00
"The second full-length outing from the quintet of NEIL CAMPBELL, MICHAEL FLOWER, JULIAN BRADLEY, BRIDGET HAYDEN, and ADAM DAVENPORT. Like their UK cousins and fellow VHF recording artists Sunroof!, VIBRACATHEDRAL ORCHESTRA usually works from a base of modal improvisation. Led by Campbells sawing violin, the group builds up arcs of lingering overtones beneath an undercurrent of melody. They cut the drones in their life with extremely effective bursts of near rock, in a style reminiscent of the pre-Nico Velvet Underground (circa 1966 or so). The bands combination of clattering percussion, droning strings, and considerable sense of where to put the "groove" makes them unique among their peers. Title: Wisdom Thunderbolt
Format: CD
Label: VHF
Country: USA
Price: $14.50
"Wisdom Thunderbolt marks the triumphant return of VIBRACATHEDRAL ORCHESTRA (MICK FLOWER, BRIDGET HAYDEN, NEIL CAMPBELL, and ADAM DAVENPORT) after more than three years in the wilderness of intermittent performance, tangential projects, and unfindable limited editions. The seven tracks on Wisdom are the VCOs most rocking dispatch ever, neatly combining the Ra-like collage of tracks like "Wisdom Thunderbolt" with the insistent pulsing jams of "A Natural Fact" and "Order of the Broad Eraser." "Ochre Dust" and "Rainbow Whirlwind" are more in the old-school VCO thick-blanket of sound, with tuned-percussion melody peeking out from the fog. After a surprise opening, "Sway-Sage" heaves with raucous drumming (courtesy of MAGIK MARKER PETE NOLAN) under the swells of sound. Hard to imagine, but this is the first widely available music (except for the Tuning to the Rooster comp) from the VCO since 2003s acclaimed The Queen of Guess." - VHF.

Title: 5 Years
Format: CD
Label: VHF
Country: USA
Price: $13.00
"5 Years is the venerable duos first release since 2001s Lammergeier. After recording and releasing nearly twenty albums between 1990 and 2001, RICHARD YOUNGS and SIMON WICKHAM-SMITH attempt an opposite approach to music making-an annual meeting to record a solitary ten-minute track. The resulting songs, each named for an intervening year, show the duo remarkably unaffected by the elapsed half-decade. Their signature mix of electronically treated percussion, ululating noise, and hand-on-the-knob tweaking continues to adapt "real human" instrumental expression to musique concrete sensibilities." - VHF.

Title: No Fans Compendium
Format: 7 CD BOX
Label: VHF
Country: USA
Price: $48.00
"No Fans Compendium is a deluxe, limited-edition seven-disc set of Richard Youngss recordings for his long-running private No Fans label. Five CDs are the artists personal selection from his No Fans releases, all of which were issued in tiny editions (20-50 copies) and only available for sale at his rare shows or at Glasgows now-defunct Volcanic Tongue shop. In addition, Youngs has included two full discs of material previously unavailable in any form: a recording from 1989 predating his earliest widely known work, and a new recording from late 2014. Unbeatable as a survey of Youngss career, everything here is of equal quality to his over-the-counter releases. In keeping with his penchant for unpredictable stylistic mashups and reinventions, there are folky laments, achingly beautiful songs, tape collage, rude prog noise, minimalist experiments, multi-tracked vocals, etc. Each disc is housed in an individual card folio with artwork repurposed from the original releases." - VHF.

Title: 20 Years
Format: LP + 3xCD
Label: VHF
Country: USA
Price: $34.00
"20 Years celebrates two decades of music from RICHARD YOUNGS and SIMON WICKHAM-SMITH, featuring four previously unreleased albums. The set includes the first new vinyl from the pair in almost 15 years, plus three other projects (presented here on CD) that were all completed and intended for release by the duo in the 90s, but fell by the wayside for various reasons. 20 Years, the newly recorded LP, is one of the heaviest, most uncompromising records of the duos long career. It consists of eight electro-acoustic reworkings of their first (unreleased) recording from 1987, and is a blistering set of tracks as wild and weird as anything theyve ever done. The SMIRR CD features four epic instrumentals in the vein of classics such as LAKE and Asthma and Diabetes, flowing with extended grandeur, mixing drone and eccentric instrumentation in the duos immediately identifiable style. Songphases ten simple, lovely tunes are a reminder of their considerable "trad" songwriting and performing prowess. While Youngs has worked in this style on his solo efforts, hearing Wickham-Smith match him track for track is a revelation. "Dream Song" is among the formers most moving pieces. Finally, LIVE!!! is a head-scratcher of an album, recorded live in-studio in full-on Dadaist style--extended clavinet mania, Casio jams and plenty of outre expression. This set is packaged in a gatefold jacket with essays by DAVID KEENAN, NEIL CAMPBELL, MARC MASTERS and JON DALE and an extended interview with Youngs and Wickham-Smith. The CDs are housed in a custom-bindered insert in the pocket opposite the LP, with each disc held snug in its own die-cut pocket, and the audiophile-quality LP was cut by JOHN GOLDEN." -VHF

Title: Lake
Format: CD
Label: VHF
Country: USA
Price: $14.50
"Originally issued in an edition of 300 on their No Fans label and for all intents and purposes unavailable and unheard for a decade, the tenth anniversary CD-ification of their classic debut double LP still sounds as revelatory and alien as it did when it was released. Tracks like the immortal college freak-out Dance: Help the Aged (Give Them A Heart Attack), the minimal pulse epic Chord, and the psych-fuzz rock mania of Goat have been undiluted in their majesty by the unbearable decade that has elapsed between then and now. Deep breath, keep the eyes from rolling back in the head, focus, focus, highest rating."

Artist: YOUNGS, RICHARD AND ALEX NEILSON
Title: Electric Lotus
Format: LP + CD
Label: VHF
Country: USA
Price: $16.00
"This epic double set combines an LP of all-electric rock mayhem with a CD of subtle drum/shakuhachi tracks. Electric Lotus is the YOUNGS and NEILSONs self-proclaimed "rock" album, and it is a mind-boggling clutch of guitar/bass/drums demolition. Coming off like an amphetamine-fueled Guru Guru, the music tumbles out in a crazy quilt of stun-level attack zonage, especially on the side-long "Electric Lotus." Neilsons staggering free-drumming hits a new peak here, stepping beyond his laudable work with Jandek, Bonnie Prince Billy, etc., into new realms. Youngs lights it up with raging guitar and bass action, including some deeply psychedelic leads and heavy riffing. Lotus Edition is a companion CD of restrained and completely live duos for drums and shakuhachi. A couple of the tracks feature the kind of long notes, bowed cymbals, and other droneage heard on previous releases like Partick Rain Dance, but in a stripped down live setting." - VHF

Title: Site/Realm
Format: LP
Label: VHF
Country: USA
Price: $10.00
"Someday, the meeting that occurred between these two guitarists will be legendary. For now, its only available on the archaic 12" LP format. Matthew Bower has been carving great big swaths of sound into the collective unconscious of hundreds of young people for over a decade. His work with Skullflower, Total, Sunroof!, etc ranks as some of the most memorable and durable (not to mention enjoyable) of the "noise" era. Richard, on his own and with assorted collaborators, has been busy issuing creative and personal missives from a practically unknown and unexplored corner of the universe of sound. The music on this thing is two side long tracks for electric guitars. "Site" bakes the listener with radioactive waves of high pitched and droning feedback. After a few minutes, a zen like peace emerges from the noise, causing the listener to fall into a deep trance which induces thoughts of flowers and birds and peace and stuff. "Realm" works a slightly less dense tangent on the two guitars as atom-splitters formular, but still manages to throw off all sorts of sparks. As if all of that bragging about the music wasnt enough, the record comes housed in a beautiful fold-out jacket, lovingly hand screened and assembled by Charlestown MAs Kristin Anderson. You know her work from various Poon Village and Sound@1 releases, Ill bet. 2 tracks, about 50 minutes." - VHF.

Title: Relayer
Format: CD
Label: VHF
Country: USA
Price: $14.50
"The second collaboration between these two stalwart titans of the true UK underground comes eight years after their first pairing on the Site/Realm LP. The title no doubt a nod to the odd resemblance of seven-year-old Rosalie Bowers cover art to another LP of the same title, this Relayer throws out the live methodology of the earlier LP for a dense set of layered studio recordings. Like the music of Matthew Bowers Sunroof! group, the tracks are rainbows of colors and textures with string drone, percussion, bleeps, and the unidentifiable, competing in a mix devoid of the traditional lead with backing schema. Many tracks have the kind of welcoming electronic bed seldom heard since the demise of Harmonia, with ring-modulated fuzz bleeping away over a chugging, but non-oppressive beat." - VHF.
