Artist: FRANK (JUST FRANK)
Title: The Brutal Wave
Format: CD
Label: Wierd
Country: USA
Price: $10.00
"Wierd Records proudly presents the debut album from Frank(just Frank) from Paris, France entitled The Brutal Wave. The Brutal Wave draws from many rich traditions of US and UK guitar driven wave, minimal synth, early black metal and new indie rock from Brooklyn respectively - layering lush washes of atmospheric anglophilic guitars above a warmly orchestral analogue synth and drum machine fueled minimal electronic backdrop. Equally of disparate origins are the band members themselves, Chris was born in New Jersey and grew up with half-Indian Kirti in the South of France, although both were schooled in London. Despite such varied influences and backgrounds, Frank(just Frank) indeed proudly embrace the French pop musical tradition and present a freshly recontextualized version of the french cold wave sound, which might well be most appropriately called ‘La Vague Froide Moderne in 2010.

The album presents a carefully crafted set of nine trax in which shiver-inducing swathes of guitars, restrained and mournful, battle alongside and often it seems directly against bitingly insistent vocals, that effortlessly switch between French and English. No lyrical themes are off limits for the apparently fearless young band, as the poetically flowing voice espouses tales ranging from provocatively centrist takes on international politics to vulnerably personal epics of heartbreak and addiction, and these tensions between right and left, darkness and light, and private versus public consistently replay themselves throughout the record, both in the lyrical content and the musical dynamics at work. This powerfully emotional record is made with simultaneous confrontation and restraint, as well as viscerally sensitized homemade DIY intimacy and feverishly swaggering aggression, and it is this balancing act and interplay of extremes that Frank(just Frank) harnesses to carve out The Brutal Wave!" - Wierd.

Artist: FRANK ALPINE
Title: S/T
Format: CD
Label: Wierd
Country: USA
Price: $10.00
"Beyond its facade as the fountainhead of American cultures glitz and glamour, Los Angeles has always had equally, if not often more alluring underbelly. Skid row squalor, gang wars, excesses of all varieties, and the stench of vanity gone awry permeate the city, poised to overtake the shimmering mirage of Hollywood idealism. Frank Alpines eponymous debut for Wierd Records is LA noir at its finest: a frenzy of claustrophobic, danceable dread that skirts the line between outer-directed nihilistic aggression and fragrant introversion. Nocturnal synthesizers, isolated, frenetic, and monotonous, plot a destination either to somewhere new and uncertain, or perhaps to nowhere at all. Frank Alpine is the alias of Rich Moreno, a veteran of LAs punk and darkened indie underground scenes, as well as a former member of New Collapse and The Boy Scouts of Annihilation. Alpine uses only consumer Casio synths to create a sound thats so thick and so harsh at times, to call it lo-fi would be to suggest something far weaker than the sounds themselves express. And while the atmosphere and gritty electronics might hearken to certain strains of industrial music or power electronics, the decided pep of the songs, and their almost blues-like simplicity situate Alpines music much more squarely in the realms of punk and even old-fashioned rock and roll. Whether "No Exit" intends to reference Sartres existential drama is irrelevant; the mood conjured is apropos of a post-death limbo. The albums second track, "Heart is Grey" finds Alpine crying out the songs title ad infinatum, as if to take the tired tropes of mope rock and give them new life as the ritualistic refrain of a headbanging electropunk dirge. And the wordless, relentlessly menacing "Through Your Window" invites one to nervously contemplate the voyeurism suggested by the songs title. Whats being seen, and by whom? Fascinating, yet remarkably uncomplicated tricks such as these carry Frank Alpines brand of minimal electronics to areas both cerebral and viscerally primal. While many contemporary electronic artists sound hints, however heavily or slightly, towards a European sensibility, Frank Alpine lives more in the realm of David Lynchs disturbed Americana, or the sinister aggression of No Wave. Somewhere between the warped intensity of the former and the acidic straightforwardness of the latter, Alpine has carved out his distinctive space: an eccentric loner squealing from inside the decay, making noise with a pulse thats paranoid and mechanical, yet unmistakably human." -Wierd

Artist: KINDEST LINES
Title: Covered In Dust
Format: LP
Label: Wierd
Country: USA
Price: $16.00
"Covered in Dust the debut LP from Louisianas Kindest Lines, opens suitably with a beat that sounds a lot like like an industrial rendition of The Ronettes Be My Baby. Brian Wilson cited that song by the legendary New York girl group as the greatest pop recording ever, and many refer to it as the perfect example of Phil Spectors "wall of sound" production. Those artists established many of the templates for how modern music is made, but what still stands out is the sense of that music having been simply dreamed-up. With organic washes of layered melodic guitars and lush songcraft, this New Orleans-based trio is definitely doing some dreaming of their own. Kindest Lines are blazing a unique path into an enchanting realm of darkened electronic indie pop that is at once welcoming and foreboding. Just as Phil Spector clearly had his demons, and just as post-Katrina New Orleans in the wake of the BP environmental disaster has become as much an emblem of loss and destruction as of Mardi Gras festiveness and upbeat jazz, the tension between dancey jubilance and the cold heart of darkness lurks in each song. Lead singer Brittany Terry expertly navigates the listener through these terrains with a voice thats never so cold as to sound detached, and yet never saccharine. Her sultry earnestness effortlessly compliments primary songwriter Jack Champagnes moody, punchy compositions while her diary-like lyrics and unassuming delivery invite the listener into her charmed universe. The title of the albums second track sums it up: Destructive Paths to Live Happily. Its music by and for people who are neither committed to sullen defeat nor blind optimism, but rather for those that tend toward the kind of affirmative, outsider attitude that refuses to take either side and instead finds a way to embrace the ways in which the two coexist. As Running Into Next Year commences with its aggressive dance beat and ominous minor key synth melodies, the lyrics take an unexpected turn: its a song about the possibility of being happy in love. Colored though the scene may be by neurotic overthinking and booze-induced confusion, its an honest portrait of those most elusive pangs of longing that mean so much precisely because of the way that doubt interjects itself. Tracks like Record Party and Prom Song cement those themes as they play out like bittersweet, nostalgic audio snapshots. Produced by cerebral electro-experimentalists Alfredo Nogueira and Josh Eustis of Telefon Tel Aviv, yet brimming with spacey guitar work and hooks aplenty, Covered in Dust is a record that thrives on harmonious disparities while maintaining all of its thematic and sonic cohesion. The Ronettes pined, "Oh wont you please be my baby." Updated by Terry? "Psychotic outbursts in the name of love, always wanting." When you get down to the bleeding heart of the matter, its kind of all along the same lines." -Wierd

Format: 7"
Label: Wierd

Price: $6.00
"The lead single from Kindest Lines forthcoming debut LP, Destructive Paths to Live Happily, is nothing short of a small Southern miracle. This New Orleans trio knows exactly how to craft a dancefloor anthem, and this track announces their darkly elegant arrival into the Wierd Records family with thumping rhythms, seductive vocals and chiming dream pop guitars. The b-side, Colors Treasured, adopts a slightly more abstract and apocalyptic industrial approach before opening up into a lilting, almost hopeful refrain." -Wierd

Title: Dust On Common
Format: LP
Label: Wierd
Country: USA
Price: $13.00
"Wierd is proud to present the debut LP by Led Er Est Dust on Common. This the bands first full-length release shows the three piece clearly breaking out of the Wierd minimal synth underground they have been a vitally integral part of since its inception in Brooklyn to create an undeniably contemporary set of highly crafted and restrained, icily psychedelic pop songs. Synthesizing countless disparate musical influences from first wave British industrial music to house, disco, and the largely unknown cold wave (aka La Vague Froide) tradition in Northern Europe, the 9 killer trax on Dust fly by, straight out of the frozen hot, lonely cold plains of vocalist Samuel Kklovenhoofs native central Texas. After digesting a few songs of this rich dust, the listener can do no other than lie down in the wild wierd Laredo bunker to revel in the refreshingly brisk blast of hedonistic analogue pleasure dancing through the airwaves in the sky above...Ladies and gentlemen, presenting Led Er Est!" -Wierd

Title: Refuge Underneath
Format: CD
Label: Wierd
Country: USA
Price: $12.00
"Wierd Records is proud to present Martial Canterels first full-length CD release entitled Refuge Underneath, a compilation of the artists first two long-deleted self-released cassette tapes Drilling Backwards (2006) and Sister Age (2004) as well as 5 previously unreleased tracks, all digitally re-mastered. Over the past 5 years the state of electronic music has seen artists slowly remove themselves from their work and visceral musical expression in general. Traditional electronic machines have been replaced by the computer as the dominant generator of contemporary sounds. It is in this climate that Sean McBride, aka Martial Canterel, began performing at bars, clubs and private parties in Brooklyn, NY in 2002, functioning singlehandedly as the pioneer and instigator of what has now become a new movement of minimal electronic bands in the United States. Martial Canterel records and performs using only vintage analogue synthesizers and sequencers, producing a highly-crafted, complex, and idiosyncratic form of electronic music that is simultaneously romantically melancholic and affirmatively aggressive. Inspired both by the first wave of relatively unknown minimal electronic bands in Northern Europe(a musical genre also often referred to as minimal synth) and the seminal industrial noise bands such as Throbbing Gristle, SPK, and Cabaret Voltaire, Martial Canterel presents a new optimistic paradigm for electronic music in which the analogue synthesizer functions anew as a folk instrument of humanist resistance to a virtual soft synth, iPod, and iTunes saturated world of click and drag dematerialized abstraction." - Wierd.

Title: You Today
Format: 7"
Label: Wierd
Country: USA
Price: $6.00
"Wierd Records is proud to present the first 7" single for the title track off of the forthcoming new full-length album from Martial Canterel entitled You Today. Since his first live performances in 2002, Sean McBride, aka Martial Canterel (who also performs as half of the duo Xeno & Oaklander), has produced a rich catalog of self-released and limited edition LPs, cassettes, and compilation tracks. The carefully crafted, private, raw, and often feverishly aggressive minimal synth sound he has pioneered has been a pillar influence for the Brooklyn minimal electronics scene and and beyond. You Today incorporates bright, urgent melodies that snake and and swagger between major and minor keys, emanating a subtle melancholic darkness and a rhythmic, militant propulsion keeping things moving against all odds. Thoughtful yet distinctly danceable and infectious, the two songs on this gem of a disc are the apex of McBrides icily idiosyncratic oeuvre." - Wierd.

"Wierd Records is proud to present the new album by Martial Canterel entitled You Today. Merging the influences of the first wave of relatively unknown minimal electronic bands in northern Europe, and seminal industrial noise bands such as Throbbing Gristle and SPK, with the smoothly stylish songcraft of early British New Wave, Martial Canterel records and performs using analogue synthesizers, sequencers and drum machines exclusively. Thoughtful yet distinctly danceable and infectious, this record is the apex of McBrides icily idiosyncratic sound. You Today incorporates bright, urgent melodies that snake and and swagger between major and minor keys. The songs emanate a subtle melancholic darkness and a rhythmic, militant propulsion keeping things moving against all odds. Lyrically, the album continues McBrides exploration of the increasing difficulty in trying to connect with real people and real things as technology renders the material substance of bodies and objects ever more abstract and distant. This yearning for unmediated human contact with the world is appropriately echoed throughout the album by the hands-on, entirely live approach to recording and performance ("the molding of electricity" as he has referred to his compositional technique.) "Market" and "Sidestreets" each delve into the disconcerting atmospheres of crowds, buildings, objects and intimates; the city with its boulevards, by-ways, and dead ends complicating the meeting of two lost and wandering figures (perhaps lovers?) The restrained, sensual haze of "The Empty Sand" conjures oceanic imagery while the title track is a lament to love lost, ambiguously addressing the listener as a memory image of potential connection and attraction. The solitary listener can certainly enjoy the music of Martial Canterel, but its visceral intensity also translates directly to the dancefloor. Amidst a flurry of flesh in motion, in a blissful atmosphere of material connection with others, the concepts that permeate the music and its creation become a reality." - Wierd.

Artist: PLASTIC FLOWERS
Title: Strange Neighbors
Format: 7"
Label: Wierd
Country: USA
Price: $5.00
"When asked in a recent interview why he moved from Tallahassee to New York, Sean Earl Beard of Plastic Flowers replied, "My choice was to get comfortable or get out. And I can never get comfortable." Bittersweet melodies of alienation, the charms of romantic detachment, the possibility of coloring ones less-than ideal surroundings with sounds that dramatize and enhance what might be otherwise too drab to take -- these are the raison detre of Plastic Flowers. Beards story is in some ways fairly classic--small town boy from an unstable home leaves it all behind to come make music in the big city. But familiar farmboy rock and roll imagery dissolves as the picture of a former punk kid from sunny Florida transplanted to overcast Brooklyn making clever yet heartfelt electronic pop comes into focus. The Strange Neighbors 7" includes three tracks that appropriately showcase Beards knack for song craft--the title track, "Strange Neighbors" and "She Learned the Best Way"--as well has his talent for facilitating escapism through lush melodic compositions like the instrumental "Serious Pleasures", which begs to invade the headphones of a lonely dreamers walk home on an Autumn night after parting ways with an unrequited crush. The digital version of the 7" comes with an alternate b-side bonus track." -Wierd.

Artist: ROSENKOPF
Title: s/t
Format: CD
Label: Wierd
Country: USA
Price: $10.00
"Tension develops at the points where modernity and the ageless meet. That tension has a rhythm that has incarnated itself in various forms of contemporary music, and sometimes the sound it makes stands out more than others. ROSENKOPF channels that deep, relentless sound that feels at once like urban ruin and primordial nature, as if the unyielding cycles of ritual and decay are echoing through each instrument. As the latest addition to the Wierd Records roster they embody one of those standout moment. Melding electronics, guitars, bass and live drums, samples, and confrontational vocals together in a seamless, non-hybridized way, ROSENKOPF has found a motley group of admirers, from those those attracted to the experimental end of black metal to those that gravitate toward the recent mutation of codeine-slowed hip-hop and demonic drone. But looking closer at the bands unmistakable spiritual bond to monolithic giants of the deathrock and crustpunk past, the gravity of their preoccupations and the singularity of their sound anchors them in a specific and unique place. While the band members have roots that reach far into the punk underground (Detestation, Question, Thriller, Dawn of Humans etc.), that serves only as the soil out of which ROSENKOPF has grown its poisonous flora. "Burning Spirits" opens the LP with bassist Saira Huffs hypnotic bassline. Groove-oriented drum machines are gradually washed over with vocalist Soren Rois urgently abrasive vocals and live metal percussion reminiscent of primitive industrialists Einsterzende Neubaten or Crash Worship. "Heed," with its charging drums and crushing guitars sounds appropriately like the fearless summoning of an as-yet-unnamed menacing force while still managing to sound anthemic. By the time "Troth" kicks in with its psychedelic overtones, the ever-increasing tempos evoke the ecstatic qualities of religious ceremony and carnal sexuality. Throughout the closing track, delicate synthesizers float atop more impatient rhythms and unwelcoming textures as moments of sonic violence are severely punctuated by pressure-inducing, almost ruthlessly patient restraint. Taken as a whole, ROENKOPF is a debut remarkable for its ability to conjure atmospheres that might have provocative names like "apocalyptic optimism" or "brooding grace." Its a darkly focused pandemonium of resistance that names no enemy. Instead, they paint its face and rally around its effigy." -Wierd.

Artist: STACCATO DU MAL
Title: Desespero
Format: 7"
Label: Wierd
Country: USA
Price: $6.00
"Wierd is proud to present the first single Desespero from Staccato du Mals forthcoming debut album Sin Destino. SdM is the solo project of Ramiro Jeancarlo from Miami, Florida, who has long been a beloved member of the Wierd Records family - performing as a member of both Opus Finis and Flesh Graey Display and appearing on both of the Wierd Compilation collections. Staccato du Mal summons the hot and dirty post-coital Miami sun, performing on entirely homemade and modified analogue gear, to produce a menacingly nihilistic, sinister sound seething with wild confrontational energy. Sung almost entirely in Spanish, the forthcoming debut album is informed by Jeancarlos half Chilean, half Venezuelan background. Pervasive throughout the LP is an aura of dread and claustrophobia that is no doubt a product of living within the mini-mall infested suburbs that sprawl across the dry, lonely landscape of South Florida. Despite this disorienting feeling, there are inspired moments of resolution where warm, delicately sensitized melodies and sparkling psychedelic soundscapes counter the bleakness. On Desepero, Jeancarlos pleas to “let me in, I want in” are frighteningly forward but made inviting against a danceable and very accessibly inviting synthpop background." - Wierd.

Title: Sin Destino
Format: CD
Label: Wierd
Country: USA
Price: $10.00
"Wierd Records is proud to present the new LP by Staccato du Mal, entitled Sin Destino. Freezing out the heat-seeking Miami scene with his cold minimal synth for the past decade, Ramiro Jeancarlo (1/2 of the industrial outfit Opus Finis) offers up ten tracks of analogue darkness. Sung in both English and Spanish, the forthcoming album is informed by Jeancarlos half Chilean, half Venezuelan background. Pervasive throughout the LP is an aura of dread and claustrophobia that without a doubt evokes the hot, dry, lonely landscape of suburban South Florida. But beyond the dismal swamplands, its possible to detect the mournful ambiance of cultures plagued for centuries by colonization, civil war and political turmoil. Whether Jeancarlo means to offer "Salvation Through Suffering" as an alternative to everything from Catholicism to revolutions-turned-tyrannies is not explicit, but the distinctive mood of dread conjures something more monolithic than plain nihilism. Therein lies the fascinating duality: "Lost Image" could as easily land in a soundtrack to a film about a lonesome teen in desolate suburbia as it could a film about Pinochets Caravan of Death. Despite the disorienting feeling of so much of the album, Staccatos own coup détat comes in the moments of resolution where warm melodies and nearly psychedelic soundscapes counter the bleakness. On “Desespero,” Jeancarlos pleas to “let me in, I want in” are frighteningly forward but made inviting against a danceable and very accessible synthpop background. The instrumental “En Sueños” has a sweetly bright melody atop sinister beats that plumb the depths, while the synthesizers in “Happy Endings” happily climb into major dimensions as the signature darkness shines through. While this album could be described as Wierd Records least commercial release so far, Staccato du Mals music is rich with sonic feeling that makes for infinitely rewarding listening. Working within the confines of the minimal synth genre, Jeancarlo manages to include elements of pop, noise, and industrial that slink to the surface with each eerie listen." - Wierd.

Title: Wierd Compilation Volume II : Analogue Electronic Music 2008
Format: 4 LP Set
Label: Wierd
Country: USA
Price: $40.00
"Wierd Records is proud to present the Wierd Compilation Volume II : Analogue Electronic Music 2008, an international collection of 39 trax by 30 bands producing contemporary music with analogue synthesizers, sequencers, and drum machines. This release is made up of four vinyl LPs packaged in a deluxe gatefold sleeve and is accompanied by a 32 page 12" x 12" book. The book contains over 300 photos, many of which were taken from live performances at the weekly Wierd label DJ and music party active in New York City since 2003, as well as lyrics and band bios. Also included in the booklet is a statement of purpose for this vast project entitled 2008 : The Analogue Synthesizer as a Folk Instrument of Humanist Resistance that is as ambitious conceptually as it is musically. Over the past several years, electronic musicians have slowly removed themselves from the visceral aspect of musical expression as they have more completely embraced the computer as the generator of contemporary sounds. It is in this climate that the Wierd Compilation Volume II proposes that analogue electronic music no longer represents a post-apocalyptic vision of an uncertain post-human future as it once did at the inception of New Wave in the late 1970s. Today, the situation is precisely the opposite. In the world of click and drag virtual software synths, the analogue instrument represents a new form of resistance in which the supposedly outdated machine is reborn as a folk instrument not unlike the acoustic guitar, violin, or hand drum. The human presence is affirmed and preserved through the artists direct interaction with the machines and the electricity that runs through them. Inspired by the seminal compilations of early industrial music such as Xtract Records The Elephant Table Album and Three Minute Symphony, Third Mind Records Life at the Top, and the Insane Music cassette series, the Wierd Compilation Volume II brings together independent artists from the new minimal electronic music scene emerging in New York, Miami, and all throughout continental Europe with the the firmly established Noise scene in the US. In the same spirit that these early genre-traversing compilations brought together both pop and experimental artists who were united by their resistance to the superficial excesses of commercial New Wave, the artists on this release are united by their DIY attitude and their resistance to the virtual excesses of modern laptop pop. All have found analogue synthesizers to be the ideal instrument for producing raw, emotive music in a world where the human touch and presence is quickly getting clicked and dragged into oblivion." Wierd. Includes A Squared (Germany), A Vague Disquiet (with Mark Solotroff of Bloodyminded, ex-Intrinsic Action/Chicago), Angel of Decay(Jonathan Canady of Deathpile/Philadelphia), Audiodakt(Germany), Charlie Draheim(Ypsilanti, MI), Demons(with Nate young of Wolf Eyes/Detroit), Carlos Giffoni(No Fun Productions/NYC), Cadaver in Drag(Lexington, KY), Envenomist(Columbus, OH), Epee du Bois(Wierd Records/NYC), Flesh Graey Display(Wierd Records/Miami), Hive Mind(Ann Arbor, MI), Human Puppets(Athens, Greece), Led er Est(Wierd Records/NYC), Martial Canterel(Wierd Records/NYC), Opus Finis(Wierd Records/Miami), Ronin(Miami), The Siamese Pearl(Miami), Pax Titania(Tallahassee, FL), Private Entertainment(Moscow, Russian Federation), Sleep Museum(Wierd Records/NYC), Spine Scavenger(Aaron Dilloway, ex-Wolf Eyes), Staccato du Mal(Wierd Records/Miami), Three to Forgotten(Wierd Records/NYC), Tobias, Bernstrup(Stockholm, Sweden), Vendome(Andreas Sippel of Second Decay/Germany), Waves(Damion Romero and John Wiese/Los Angeles), Wave Tank(Athens, Greece), Xeno and Oaklander(Wierd Records/NYC), and Zug Im Veins(w Geert Coppens of Twilight Ritual/Belgium). Second volume of this true "labor of love" series from artist Pieter Schoolwerths Wierd label, this time expanding the sounds to include more experimental synth recordings along with the minimal/dark/cold wave. Very Highly Recommended!

Title: Selenelion
Format: CD
Label: Wierd
Country: USA
Price: $10.00
"Its been said before that Stanley Kubrick seemed like a classical composer who created films instead -- that the images played out more like arias and overtures than a matinee movie. The inverse of that is probably the only way to approach Selenelion, the debut LP from Vaura. Less a collection of songs and more like an expedition into an elegantly foreboding universe, the eleven tracks that comprise the latest release from Wierd Records sound as if they were each crafted to evoke unearthly scenery and monolithic events.

From harsh distortion and aggressive screams to cold and shimmering clean guitars and vocals, the spectrum of sound on Selenelion is both varied and atmospherically cohesive. Thunderous drums, droning synthesizers, percussive metals, acoustic guitars, and vocal arrangements that sometimes approach ritualistic plainchant recall artists like Ulver and Swans. Vauras particular blend of brutality and romantic melodicism can be attributed in part to the stylistic mesh of musicians: Kevin Hufnagel, Toby Driver, Josh Strawn, and Charlie Schmid also play in Gorguts, Dysrhythmia, Kayo Dot, Secret Chiefs 3, and Religious to Damn. Selenelion was recorded and mixed by Colin Marston of progressive black metallists Krallice, and signals a nod for Wierd Records to the roots of founder Pieter Schoolwerth who is also member of the seminal noise outfit Bloodyminded and a continuing supporter of acts like Locrian.

The album title refers to a horizontal lunar eclipse: the moment at which the sun and the eclipsed moon can be seen at the same time. With song titles referencing everything from an Etruscan demoness to a Luciferian take on the conversion of St. Paul, and with artwork by the German photographer Alexander Binder, the unifying thread is an unmistakable sense of shadow-drenched enigma. "Drachma" refers to the coins that bought passage for the dead into the underworld, suggesting that everything following that track is part of an Orpheus-like journey. But repeated nods to the occult literature of Jorge Luis Borges, in particular to "The Aleph" and "The Zahir," two stories that deal with infinity and vision, suggest that beyond the the dark hallucinations there is also a serious meditation taking place on the limits and paradoxes of seeing. Approaching such subject matter by way of something as invisible and intangible as music, Vaura invites the listener to share in a visceral, yet intimate ceremony of sensuality and destruction." -Wierd.

Title: Sentinelle
Format: CD
Label: Wierd
Country: USA
Price: $10.00
"The long-awaited full-length debut album from Xeno & Oaklander is now available! Functioning as the absolute core of the electronic wing of the Wierd world since their beginnings in 2004, Miss Liz Wendelbo and Sean McBride here present a carefully composed, restrained and complex form of moody electronic pop music that is simultaneously romantically melancholic and affirmatively aggressive. Recorded entirely live in the studio with exclusively analogue instruments, Sentinelle situates itself as a series of highly crafted cinematic vignettes which takes as its vantage point a fictitious era in a long-passed distant age: a time of wandering desert travelers, forgotten underwater cities, and exquisitely sculptural objects; of arid land, sea-farers and ferrymen, blinding light and lonely rooms, precious metals and poisonous corrosion. Themes of paranoia and disaffection associated with the transformation felt during the industrial revolution(a stand-in for our contemporary digital malaise), as well as odes to the many gifts of its legacy - motion pictures, cameras, synthesizers, and voltage control, are traversed throughout the epic journey of this minimal electronic masterpiece, allowing the listener to gaze out of the frozen cold window onto the many radical paradigm shifts of the twentieth century, and is a true sonic portrait of this eminently fragile era in transition." -Wierd

Title: Sets & Lights
Format: CD
Label: Wierd
Country: USA
Price: $10.00
"A portrait emerges in the video for the lead single from XENO & OAKLANDERs Sets & Lights: one of two separate yet unmistakably intertwined individuals. LIZ WENDELBO  gracefully ascends and descends a menacing staircase while SEAN MCBRIDE stands patiently in the ambiguous, blurred distance. The time is warped, the architecture is unfriendly, and the relationship between both people and their physical environment is made anxiously questionable. And yet, dominating the proceedings is an air of exoticism and pervasive sensuality in the face of what feels like an impending violent event. The collision of these tensions, atmospheres, and personas is soundtracked on this latest offering from Wierd Records. Xeno & Oaklander create a universe where technology is beautifully timeless, where electricity pulses with vigor and effortless finesse. The standard meaning of "ghosts of technology," with its equally standard images of looming architecture and lifeless shells of machines, is rendered obsolete. Nimble electronic melodies sing, stretch and glow like elegant apparitions. Grandiosity and restraint live harmoniously side-byside, just as the dual vocals of McBride and Wendelbo weave in and out of one another, sometimes an isolated croon and sometimes a layered texture. The interplay between McBride and Wendelbo yields very little that is conventional, but quite a lot thats alluring. Theirs is an enigmatic combination of various sensibilities that nevertheless produces a singularly focused vision. McBride sings, "the theater, the stage, the sets the lights, masking some grand delight." This is a record that makes the most of the power of electronic instruments to set a scene, to evoke intrigue, and to invite the mind to wander into those shadowy places where grand delights hide." - Wierd.

Title: Vigils
Format: LP
Label: Wierd
Country: USA
Price: $14.00
"Wierd Records is proud to announce the release of a vinyl edition of Xeno & Oaklanders Vigils EP, originally self-released by the band as a limited edition CDR in 2006, here remastered with a previously unavailable bonus track. Merging the cold, cinematic aesthetics of artist Liz Wendelbo with the architectural exactitude of Sean McBride (a.k.a. Martial Canterel), Xeno & Oaklander have been the sharpest spearheads of twenty-first-century minimal synth since their formation in 2004. Using analogue synthesizers and instruments exclusively, the duo record all of their songs live in the studio, a challenge to the common practice of cut and paste recording where immediacy is often sacrificed in favor of a far-removed drag and drop electronic pop. Recorded in one continuous take on October 1st, 2006, and played to loving death by all of the DJs at the weekly Wierd party for the past four years, Vigils has long been a cornerstone and inspiration to a new young generation of electronic bands in the Brooklyn synth scene and beyond. Uptempo, echo-laden synthesizers and drum machines provide a spacious backdrop for Miss Lizs ephemeral vocal presence. Their melodic, mournful oeuvre is an invocation of a lost future that was abandoned years ago in favor of something less human. These 8 tracks are both fragile and psychedelic, suggesting an electronic equivalent of the British shoegaze bands while maintaining the wildly aggressive stripped-down, raw and unmediated spirit of punk and the seminal industrial noise groups that informed the ideals of the original wave of European minimal electronic bands." - Wierd.
