Artist: CRAIG, IAN WILLIAM
Title: Meaning Turns to Whispers
Format: LP
Label: Aguirre
Country: Belgium
Price: $24.00
"Aguirre Records present Ian William Craigs Meaning Turns to Whispers. Ian is a trained opera singer and painter out of Vancouver, Canada. Over the last few years he has proved to be one of the most original artists active in the ambient/experimental genre. His debut A Turn Of Breath (2014) and the follow-up, Cradle For The Wanting (2015) received high acclaim. Meaning Turns to Whispers is a combination of piano improvisations and FM feedback loops, recorded over various winters from 2009 to 2011 and edited down, manipulated and degraded to reveal some of their hidden spaces. The discreet piano layers mixed with waves of white noise are intriguing making you long for more. Meaning Turns to Whispers is a record rooted in a gorgeous neo-classical tradition, but totally fucked up by tape manipulations that made it anything but pretty. For Craig, the use of reel-to-reels is a way of decaying sentimentality: any time his music has come too close to meeting his expectations, he uproots it, creating impervious walls or bursts of modest but stupefying noise. In choice moments on Meaning, you can hear Craig trying to imagine the lived lives of his inanimate instruments; you hear him beam down on the piano, its wooden infrastructure revealed, sounding like it has its own set of motivations. "I was living with my sister in Edmonton, and during the ridiculously cold winter, I gutted her piano and micd it up in a whole bunch of weird ways. I recorded probably twenty hours of material, and after listening to it I was amazed at how much it sounded like sentimental crap. At that point I was really trying to express something, and afterwards I thought the only way through would be to destroy the recordings, and thats what Meaning Turns To Whispers is. Its completely mangled to remove that struggle for expression. I realized at the end of that album that I didnt want to express, I just wanted to explore." Mastered by Sean McCann at Recital. Lacquer cut by Christoph Grote-Beverborg at Dubplates & Mastering. Edition of 500." - Aguirre.

Artist: ENHET FOR FRI MUSIK
Title: Inom Dig, Inom Mig
Format: LP
Label: Aguirre
Country: Belgium
Price: $27.00
"Folk unit originated in the Swedish underground Enhet för Fri Musik - featuring members of Sewer Election, Ättestupa, Neutral, Makthaverskan, and Blod - continually re-invent what music is about through free improvisation and lengthy folk meanderings. Embedded in the ever exciting Swedish underground scene, Enhet För Fri Musik continue the quest for innovation numerous legendary Swedish bands started during the 70s - such as, Pärson Sound, Trad Gras Och Stenar, and Arbete Och Fritid. Taking the ideas of communal music craft and experimentation, on Inom Dig, Inom Mig, the group comes to a unique combination of Jandek-like atonal guitar, organ, tape effects, field recordings, and saxophone, with Sofie Herners amazing loner voice running over it. Adding another inspiring document to the world of open-minded music. Inom Dig, Inom Mig was originally release on cassette in 2015 on Forever United. Silkscreened sleeves by Marijke Loozen; Music by Dan Johansson, Gustaf Dicksson, Hugo Randulv, Sofie Herner; Mastered by Kris Delacourt; Artwork by Dan Johansson; Edition of 150." - Aguirre.

Artist: LICHEN GUMBO
Title: Boilin
Format: LP
Label: Aguirre
Country: Belgium
Price: $27.00
"Lichen Gumbo is a lo-fi underground rock band from Finland. Boilin was recorded during a week of seclusion in a small cabin deep in the woods with no running water and at home during an exceptional heat wave hitting Finland in 2014, hence the Boilin title for this album of hazy tunes. The selected songs range from Throbbing Gristle hits to a more noisy garage style. Mixing heavily distorted drums and guitars, vocals varying in style going from garage, no wave to totally deranged, and synth bubbles which sound like theyre recorded straight from the water surface of hot springs (or perhaps they just borrowed a Moog from Acid Mothers Temple). Lichen Gumbo are Olli Aarni and Ville Oinonen. Olli has been recording under his own name since 2011 and mostly works with electronic sounds. He has released music as Ous Mal and Nuojuva. Ville joins him for the lo-fi ride that is Lichen Gumbo. Hand-assembled sleeves; Artwork by Olli Aarni, Ville Oinonen and Mia Tarkela; Mastering by Kris Delacourt; Edition of 150." - Aguirre.

Artist: PALESTINE, CHARLEMAGNE
Title: Strumming Music
Format: LP
Label: Aguirre
Country: Belgium
Price: $27.00
"The classic minimal music album, available again on vinyl for the first time since the 70s. Primed with a glass of cognac, Charlemagne Palestine sits at the keyboard of a Bösendorfer Imperial grand piano. One foot firmly holds down the sustain pedal while both hands perform an insistent strum-like alternation on the keys. Soon Palestine and his Bösendorfer are enveloped in sound and bathed in a shimmering haze of multi-colored overtones. For 45 minutes, this rich pulsating music swells and intensifies, filling the air. When Strumming Music first appeared on the adventurous French label Shandar during the mid-1970s, it seemed a straightforward matter to place Charlemagne Palestine in the so-called minimalist company of La Monte Young, Terry Riley, Steve Reich, and Philip Glass, whose work also featured in the Shandar catalog. Palestine too used a deliberately restricted range of materials and a repetitive technique, but as he has often pointed out in more recent times, the opulent fullness of his music would more accurately be described as maximalist. Strumming Music, recorded in Palestines own loft in Manhattan, has no written score. In an age of recorded sound he still feels no need for traditional notation. The surging energy of this particular recording stands comparison with the improvising of jazz visionaries who impressed and inspired him while living in New York as a young man. But, as Palestine himself has made clear, primarily he brings to music-making the sensibility of an artist rather than a musician. Although the technique of the piece has roots in Palestines daily practice, when a teenager, of playing the carillon at a church, hammering sonorous chimes from a rack of tuned bells, it also draws on his later work as a body artist, staging vigorously muscular, physically demanding and often reckless performances. In addition, Strumming Music can be heard as a sculptural tour de force, while its textures connect with the color moods, plastic rhythms, and tactile space of Mark Rothkos abstract expressionist canvases. Strumming Music remains the essential index of Palestines singular creative vision. Fundamentally this fascinating piece is a collaboration between an artist and an instrument. Palestine had first encountered the Bösendorfer Imperial back in 1969. "The Bösendorfer at its best is a very noisy, thick molasses piano," he has remarked. Charlemagne Palestine embraced its clinging sonorousness, its clangorous resonance and out of that embrace came the voluptuous sonic fabric of Strumming Music." - Aguirre.

Artist: PICCINELLI, PIT, FRED GALES, WALTER MAIOLI
Title: Amazonia 6891: Sounds From Jungle, Natural Objects, Echo And Electronic Waves
Format: Double LP
Label: Black Sweat
Country: Italy
Price: $39.00
"Black Sweat Records present a reissue of Amazonia 6891: Sounds From Jungle, Natural Objects, Echo And Electronic Waves, originally released on cassette in 1986. The idea to evoke a deep journey in the Amazon rainforest has affected various musicians in the history of popular and experimental music, but compared to other works, this rare Amazonia 6891, released only on cassette in 1986, appears as totally original and extreme in his conception. Here, the interest in ethnomusicology of the expert Walter Maioli (part of Aktuala and Futuro Antico) is linked to a precise and comprehensive ecological, botanical, ethological and ethnographic perspective. In fact, starting from the sound recording of the ethnographer Pit Piccinellis collection of natural objects, the collected material for this work is re-elaborate in different times by the anthropologist and electronic pioneer Fred Gales and by Maioli himself. The result of this multi-disciplinary approach is a long, concrete poem of plant organisms, field recordings of verses and calls of tropical animals, futuristically mixed with electronic sounds, similar to the great experimental trials of Futuro Antico and Ariel Kalmas 1978 album, Osmose (BS 007LP). Listening to this imaginative collage is like looking into a precious cabinet of antiquities and curiosity, whose wonders of multi-colored cellular fragments are shaped in the synthesis of a single universal sound matter. The merger between the wild jungle, the mysterious voices of the aboriginals and the oscillation of the electronic waves, creates a spasmodic tension between amazing and heavenly moments, leaking obscure paths and alien sequences. Amazonia 6891 is a magic trip into the unknown wild, into abyss of creation of kaleidoscopic floras and faunas, simply a proposal for a synesthetic experience and multi-sensory." - Black Sweat.

Title: AMMMusic
Format: LP
Label: Black Truffle
Country: Australia
Price: $21.00
"First vinyl reissue of the landmark 1967 debut album by AMM,AMMMusic. Remastered and cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin. Exact replica sleeve by Stephen OMalley. "Coinciding with the 50th anniversary of its recording in 1966, this reissue makes one of the cornerstones of the experimental music tradition available again in its original form, replete with Keith Rowes beautiful pop art cover and the terse aphorisms by the group that served as its original liner notes. A testament to the interaction between the experimental avant-garde and the countercultural underground, the album was originally released on Elektra, recorded by Jac Holzman (the labels founder, responsible for signing The Doors, Love, and The Stooges) and produced by DNA, a group that included Pink Floyds first manager, Peter Jenner (the title of Pink Floyds “Flaming” is a tribute to AMMs “Later During a Flaming Riviera Sunset”). Formed in 1965 by three players from the emerging British jazz avant-garde -- Keith Rowe and Lou Gare had played with the great progressive big band leader Mike Westbrook and Eddie Prévostplayed in a post-bop group with Gare -- AMM quickly evolved from a free jazz group into something decidedly more difficult to categorise. By the time these recordings were made, two more members had joined the group: another Westbrook associate, Lawrence Sheaff, and the radical composer Cornelius Cardew. Then at work on his masterpiece of graphic notation Treatise, Cardew brought with him extensive experience of the post-serialist and Cageian currents in contemporary composition. Using a combination of conventional instruments and unconventional methods of sound production (most famously Keith Rowes prepared tabletop guitar, but also prepared piano and transistor radio), the group performed improvised pieces often running for over two hours and ranging from extended periods of silence to terrifying cacophonies. OnAMMMusic, long tones sit next to abrasive thuds, the howl of uncontrolled feedback accompanies Cardews purposeful piano chords, radios beam in snatches of orchestral music. AMMs clearest break with jazz-based improvisation concerned the idea of individuality. Initially through an engagement with eastern philosophy and mysticism and later though a politicized communitarianism, AMM sought to develop a collective sonic identity in which individual contributions could barely be discerned. In the performances captured on AMMMusic the use of numerous auxiliary instruments and devices, including radios played by three members of the group, contribute to the sensation that the music is composed as a single monolithic object with multiple facets, rather than as an interaction between five distinct voices." --Francis Plagne.

Price: $26.00
"This album is a mystery. All we know about it is that an outsider Swedish artist, Isaak Sundström, brought it back from Mexico in 2014 after recording it with a local choir and an Haitian soloist. Together, they recorded five of Isaaks compositions. We dont know the names of the individuals in the choir or how many of them there were. We dont know how Isaak met those singers. The only thing were sure of is that this album has a unique approach and sounds like nothing else. We could try to describe it as a DIY gospel choir delivering a conscious message of love and unity. The world needs to listen to this album to experience its infinite strength and universal power." - Bongo Joe.

Price: $5.50
"The Sha is a three piece collective made up of Matthew Earle, Adam Sussmann, and Christian Durham. Those names will seem familiar to those keeping up with the wealth of releases coming out on Earles Breakdance the Dawn imprint for the past decade plus. XNoBBQX, XWave, Love Chants, Sun of the Seventh Sister are just a few of the very many projects they dabble in. In The Sha the trio go into definitively psychedelic territory – sometimes of the rock variety, sometimes of a more experimental variety. On this self-titled cassette (their U.S. debut) the improvisations tend towards sustained repetition. They open the tape with an entrancing guitar number that stretches out over endless 1-2-1-2 drums, begging the question how one can maintain such a beat for such a prolonged time? And invoking notions of free and hippy rockers all the same. A later electronic and feedback drenched number is broken up by the occasional flourishes of harmonica and vocals – challenging the machines with simple acoustics to remind us that, however otherworldly it is, this music is in fact made by man. Limited to 75 copies." - C/Site.

"Unadulterated dirge, scuzz, and weirdness from members of XNoBBQX, Sun of the Seventh Sister, Love Chants and an endless list of others. XWave continues the thug punk tradition from Australia – harnessing the attitude of bands like feedtime and 3 Toed Sloth, while adding their own notions of noise, improvisation and ineptitude. At times reminiscent of Japanese Minor scene acts like Kousokuya or Gaseneta, and even bringing to mind the chopped electronics of Lighthouse-era Shadow Ring (although that comparison tends to end abruptly with a barbaric thud on the floor tom to cue another fuzzed out bass line). Punishing, menacing and unkind, for over a decade XWave has abused strings and skins alike – pounding out a nervous breakdown, just as much as they shout about it. Limited to 75 copies." -C/Site.

"Thru the gates of forever and into the frozen vapours of Mannattans minimal electronic monolith in the night, Further Reductions, Shawn OSullivan (of Led Er Est knowings) and collaborateur Katie Rose are weaving a web of reverberatory wonderment. One of not just a few of the minimal synth couple outfit armies to emerge from New Yorks ever living and breathing clan of the same epithet, this masculine/feminine dream drone dichotomys synthesized incantations drift like gleaming analog jewels of dark incandescent dance dew. Title: Total Shit!
Format: LP
Label: Diagonal
Country: UK
Price: $19.00
"Bubbling up from his post-everything cesspit, Shit And Shine cups another killer album boff to the grill of Diagonal with Total $hit!, his second LP and third full release for Powell and Jaime Williamss indomitable imprint. A rancid ruck of rock n roll and industrial entrails squeezed for sustenance and sploshed with classic 80s disco, Total $hit! is nothing if not a definitive Craig Clouse record; insistently playful, scatty, and demented, in equal measures, but with a couldnt care less attitude thats always refreshing and welcome. Following his grind-core lash Teardrops for Riot Season (REPOSE 052LP, 2016), this one is a return to the heavy truckin styles last heard on Everybodys A Fuckin Expert with Editions Mego (EMEGO 212CD/LP, 2015) and Good White Good Green for Glasgows Heated Heads (2016), depositing nine examples of his nonchalant style at its most distended, unsettling, and, funnily enough, its most funked-up and effective. He makes a big entrance with the blind-drunk swagger of "Hot Shovel" trammeling rabid tribal drums, grunts and pitched voices in a febrile hot mess, before "Chklt Shk" possibly betrays his no f**ks attitude with some of his canniest, adroit tweaks applied to what sounds like Anthony Shakir and MMM fighting over the last cubicle after a plate of bad seafood, then its back to twisted smiles and buckie-sloshing skank with the acrid disco nip of "Long Island City". The records longest, murkiest section follows with the Jacko-shampling "Dodge Pot" dispensing a slimy hot streak of flatulent mongrel boogie that perhaps outstays its welcome, hence the entrance of two squabbling lasses who tell it where to go, which leaves us with a version of the recumbent coke standard "White Horse" ready for the knackers yard, plus a trio of saltier, off-the-wrist jags that only serve to agitate and infect the sore hes been prodding at til this point. Lets be fair: Total $hit! is not big or clever but, it is messy and fun; like the soundtrack to a lock-in at a boozer exclusively full of mad c*nts who were chucked out of every other place. Label: Discrepant
Country: UK
Price: $26.00
"People Like Us is audiovisual collage artist Vicki Bennett, who has been making work available via CD, DVD and vinyl releases, radio broadcasts, performances, gallery exhibits, and online streaming for 25 years. Since 1992, she has developed an immediately recognizable aesthetic repurposing pre-existing footage to craft audio and video collages with an equally dark and witty take on popular culture. She sees sampling and appropriation as folk art sourced from the palette of contemporary media and technology, with the sharing and cross-referencing incumbent to a populist form. Abridged Too Far is the first of a series of vinyl by Discrepant to celebrate 25 years of People Like Us publishing albums. Abridged Too Far was first released in digitally in 2004 exclusively for UbuWeb, this album includes Vickis session for John Peel and performances for WFMU, amongst others, from 2003. Packaged with brand new artwork designed by Vicki Bennett. RIYL: Porest, Ergo Phizmiz, WFMU." - Discrepant.

Title: Nervous Hydra / All This Has Passed Forever
Format: LP
Label: Ecstatic
Country: USA
Price: $19.00
"Ecstatics stunning split release between Maurizio Bianchi, godfather of the Italian industrial noise scene, and Abul Mogard, the much loved and hyperstitious synthesist, conjures a spellbinding testament to the transcendent and transportive energies of electronic music. Although appearing to starkly contrast on the surface, both artists work patently shares a lust for the suggestive abstraction of raw current and its pareidolia-like capacity to generate rich and uncanny emotional responses from the end user. On the A-side, Maurizio Bianchi serves the obfuscated, coruscating atmosphere of "Nervous Hydra"; a 17-minute piece of sunken, desiccated harmonic structures and warped greyscale tones rinsed with ET radio signals and distant percussion that recall the sound of embers landing on tinfoil or snow. It evokes the experience of being caught in a quietly raging whiteout with only a dying fire for company, or equally a sense of subaquatic, amniotic serenity prior to being evacuated into a much colder world. Listeners can trust that the Italian artists first new work in several years is faithful to his ever-uncompromising oeuvre, but theres also a tantalizingly elusive sense of redemption buried deep in there which marks it out from the rest of his canon and close to the work of his antecedents such as Kevin Drumm and Jim Haynes. In that pieces tempestuous wake, Abul Mogard brings a sense of soothing, glacial calm with "All This Has Passed Forever" on the B-side. For 16 blissed minutes, Mogard spells out a nostalgic fantasy in creamy strokes of Farfisa organ and Serge modular synthesizer recorded at EMS studios, Stockholm, and later combined with field recordings to elicit a wistfully widescreen paean to his days on the workshop floor accompanied by the harmonious drones and cacophony of heavy machinery. No matter the pieces provenance, though; its simply a sublime example of Abul Mogards gift for illusive, suspenseful ambient music which has seen his previous releases sky-rocket in second hand value since their earliest, sold-out editions. Over 30 minutes of ostensibly contrasting yet subtly, similarly spirited pieces that speak to the mystery and enigma of electronic musics tortured, searching and romantic soul in equal measure. Cut at Dubplates & Mastering; Edition of 500." - Ecstatic.

Price: $31.00
"Empty Editions present Eli Keszlers Last Signs Of Speed as their inaugural release. This release has represented a labor of love for both Eli and the label. Last Signs is Elis first solo release since 2012s Catching Net (PAN 032CD) and explores a very different side of his unique acoustic universe. One in which the macro-cosmic percussive collisions of his earlier work give way to a gradual unfolding of dub-influenced rhythmic constellations. Eli has described Last Signs as his response to playing in club environments over the last few years; an attempt to negotiate a delicate balance between the materiality of his acoustic instrument and the hyper-mediated sonic ecosystem of the club sound system. Coming off like an inspired synthesis between Scientist and Xenakis, Last Signs Of Speed is a truly unique work by an artist at the height of his power." - Empty Editions.

Artist: ABRAMS, JOSHUA AND NATURAL INFORMATION SOCIETY
Title: Simultonality
Format: LP
Label: Eremite
Country: USA
Price: $32.00
"Simultonality is the follow-up to Joshua Abramss critically acclaimed 2015 album Magnetoception (MTE 063-64LP, 2015). Credited to Joshua Abrams and Natural Information Society (NIS), it is the first recording in the projects nine year, four album history made by a regularly gigging manifestation, rather than a special assembly of friends. Recorded in 2014 and 2015 in single takes by the full ensemble during and after tours of the US and Canada, Simultonality once more affirms the projects unique approach to joining traditional musics, American minimalism, and jazz with the Gnawa ceremonial instrument the guimbri. Stasis, continuity, and repetition, central qualities of Abrams language, defined Magnetoception, listed by many as one of the best records of 2015. These same qualities form the heart of Abramss music on Simultonality. But where Abrams once said Magnetoception is about "winter and death", Simultonality, in Abramss words, is an album of "pure motion". Without sounding frenetic it is the most explosive NIS music on record, and without sounding over-determined, it is Abramss most structured and through-composed music yet. Much of it is also fast, a mass of densely patterned elements swiftly orbiting constantly reconfiguring centers that are variously harmonic and rhythmic, clearly stated or implied. The music is at no time any more disorderly than a colony of bees pollinating a vast garden. Its many moving parts function in mutualistic relationship toward fulfilling Abramss long stated intention for the project: to help listeners achieve a meditative center and to consciously use music as a gateway to living. Abrams credits William Parker as an inspiration for this intention. The musicians on Simultonality date back to the nascency of NIS. Along with Hamid Drake, Mikel Avery and Frank Rosaly are Abrams first-call drummers for the project. On Simultonality, Avery is in the left channel, Rosaly the right. Astute heads may recognize the rhythm in "Sideways Fall" as Jaki Leibezeits drum break in Cans "Vitamin C". At Abrams behest, the two drummers divided the beat into separate parts. According to Hamid Drake, the rhythm was popularized, if not originated, by John "Jabo" Starks and Clyde Stubblefield of the J.B.s. Nearly ten years into its existence, Abrams and the NIS wear their influences with creativity and ease. Long standing NIS members, Ben Boye and Emmett Kelly, were previously together with Abrams, or not, in Bonnie Prince Billys band, and Abrams and Boye have at different times played in Kellys band The Cairo Gang. Harmonium player Lisa Alvarado contributes the large format pattern paintings used by NIS at concerts and for its album covers. Personnel: Joshua Abrams - guimbri, bass, small harp, bells; Lisa Alvarado - harmonium, Leslie, percussion; Michael Avery - drums and percussion; Ben Boye - chromatic electric autoharp, piano, Wurlitzer; Ari Brown - tenor saxophone (on "2128½"); Emmett Kelly - electric guitar; Frank Rosaly - drums and percussion, resonator bells. Pressed on premium quality audiophile vinyl by RTI, presented in replica audiophile dust sleeves and heavyweight Stoughton LaserDisc jackets screenprinted by Alan Sherry/Siwa. Edition of 825 copies." - Eremite.

Title: Unity
Format: LP
Label: Eremite
Country: USA
Price: $32.00
"Eremite present Byron And Geralds Unity, a private press free jazz album recorded in 1969 at Howard University and the first release on Byron Morriss EPI label. It is the only hardcore free jazz record out of 1960s DC, and a viscerally powerful cultural dispatch on the sociopolitical upheavals of its time. From Byrons 2017 liner notes: "In the early spring of 1969, several months before moving to Poughkeepsie, NY, Gerald Wise and I, along with the recording engineer Len Jones, conceived of the idea to gather a group of musicians who were like-minded concerning The New Thing (Sun Ra, John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Eric Dolphy, Booker Little). Most of the musicians we asked to be part of this experiment we knew from jam sessions or were already part of Unit Five. Eric Gravatt suggested we invite two of his musician friends from Philadelphia, Byard Lancaster and Keno Speller. I wrote a musical composition for the date dedicated to my father, JWM+53. My friend Earl Snead wrote the other composition, Black Awareness. Earl passed shortly after the session. The recording session took place at the studio of an experimental TV channel that leased space on the campus of Howard University. Gerry and I welcomed all the musicians and thanked them for being part of the session. The scene immediately took on a magical atmosphere, with everyone going about their tasks as if they had cue sheets. In the center of the room we laid out our instruments on two 4x8 tables. That way we could just pick up any instrument and play when the spirit hit us. I had two altos (one plastic) and a curved soprano. Jerry Wise had his trumpet and some hand rhythm instruments. Byard Lancaster had an alto sax, flute, trumpet, and some hand rhythm instruments. Vins Johnson had a tenor and a baritone sax. Keno Speller had a bell tree, tambourines, claves, drum sticks, felt-headed mallets, and a set of amplified conga drums. Inside the tables our two drummers, Eric Gravatt and Abu Sharrieff, sat face to face with two full drum kits and microphones all around them. Next to them were our two bassists, Fred Williams and a young man named Chris (whose last name, sadly, I cannot remember). To this day, I wish the proceedings had been filmed. The energy level was so high that Byard Lancaster did push-ups when not playing (I believe I remember Vins Johnson and Keno Speller also doing some). In spite of all of the excitement, everyone wanted to make a serious musical statement and cooperated in taking directions from Len Jones, Gerry, and me. It was orderly excitement, the collective We caught-up in the moment. Ornettes Free Jazz (1961) and Tranes Ascension (1965) address much of what we were attempting in the studio that day in 1969. . . . In point of fact, most if not all of us had witnessed firsthand the physical excitement and, in some moments, pure terror of the urban riots set off in the spring of 1968 by the murder of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.. Washington, DC, exploded with anger and the looting and burning of businesses throughout the city. U.S. Army troops, along with Air Force and Navy/Marine elements, were sent in to quell these massive urban disturbances. During the recording of Unity our collective emotions were still raw, to say the least. Here and now, nearly a half of a century later, I can still smell the tear gas and the burning tires. I get chills just thinking about it. But the music got us through that time... and the music gets us through now!" - Eremite.

"In the 15 years since Thurston and I released the first Clarinette LP, Haze (E#60, 2002), Dan Vallor has continued to produce music unabated. Most of it has been released in very limited editions (on CDRs, cassettes, and lathes), but it has been a consistently cool flow of drone accrual and invention from a guy we still sorta think of as pop-oriented. Dans best known work probably remains his archival activities inside the archives of the late songwriting genius, Scott Miller, although others may know him from his efforts to catalog the output of the NZ lathe underground. Clarinette is a long running solo project that began in the 80s, that went dormant until early in the 21st Century. The music is largely based on electric guitar huzz and hum, but there are plenty of sound events that pop up throughout the record, disturbing and enriching the surface with sproings, rasps, and groons. The pieces on The Now of Then are all fairly reflective, and probably more suitable to stoned drifting than freak dancing, but hey -- it never pays to second guess audience reaction. If you feel the urge to freak, so be it. Clarinettes music definitely twangs the freak register. Who are we to say you should remain seated?" - Byron Coley, 2017.

Title: Heavy Death Head
Format: LP
Label: Feeding Tube
Country: USA
Price: $16.00
"Michael Turner, famed resident of Louisville/Lexington KY, main cog in the splendid Warmer Milks and valuable presence in many other ensembles, has recently migrated to New England. And we are honored to have him amongst us. As a way of making him feel to home, Feeding Tube has released his most recent slab of insane solo aktion, Heavy Death Hand, as splendidly out an LP as anyone could ask for. Mazozma is a recent nom de musique assumed by Turner, following a passel of albums released under the name Ma Turner. And every one of them weve heard is a pure blitz of sound designed to make your brain feel all soft and runny. The vibe of the music is pure American zonerism -- think of stuff like the Bobby J Records catalog, the Department Store Santas, Willimantic Shrin, and other LPs that seem to exist inside their own personal aesthetic continuum. One gets the feeling that they carry their own very real message, but that it is so deeply coded, so artfully fucked-with, and so weirdly personal that getting to its essence is like trying to play chess with Kaspar Hauser. The music itself is rock-based, but abstract, chittering, and incredibly fascinating. There are lots of people who try to do something new and original with guitar pedals and keyboard toggles and altered vocals, but usually it just ends up sounding like stoner bong-dust. Mazozmas music coheres somehow, venting poison gases with a gentle scent and strange allure. All of Turners albums are pretty amazing, but this one seems to go further in terms of pure sonic reach. The record more or less defines a very specific type of late night music, one which is favored by people who embrace the aether at just around the time most of us abandon hope and wish only to slip into the arms of Morpheus. As the soundtrack to a waking dream, it almost makes sense." - Byron Coley. Edition of 400.

Artist: PASQUAROSA WITH JOHN "SUNBURNED" MOLONEY, ANTHONY "CRYSTALLINE ROSES"
Title: My Pharaoh, My King
Format: LP
Label: Feeding Tube
Country: USA
Price: $16.00
"This new duo LP, the first recorded by guitarist Tony Pasquarosa and drummer John Moloney (aka The Meatball Twins), is a masterpiece of lateral drift. Recorded as something like a tribute to the spirit of Farrell Little Rock Sanders (also known as The Son in the saxophonic Holy Trinity, along with Coltranes The Father, and Aylers The Holy Ghost) there is no music here specifically recalling Sanderss work. But much of it seems to spring from a place that is illuminated by Sanderss artistic freedom, and his utilization of Middle Eastern symbols and motifs both inside his music and as part of his artistic statements. Tonys acoustic guitar playing makes me think of the work of Indias great string master, Brij Bhushan Kabra. Raga-like twirls and filigree emerge like puffs of wet smoke, drifting away lazily in the sharp light of a winters afternoon. And Moloney, who is best known for throwing down thunder with Sunburned, Chelsea Light Moving, Dino Jr, Caught On Tape and other Giants of Thud, matches Tonys mood effortlessly. Sweet light rhythm patterns are not something one often associates with Moloneys music, but his playing here with both percussion and wind show a very different side of his chops. At some points the overall sound recalls one of Sandy Bulls Blends with Billy Higgins, but the music on My Pharaoh, My King is entirely its own trip. And it is a damn good one. Enjoy it with a meatball today!" - Byron Coley, 2017. Edition of 500.

Title: I Hope All Your Dreams Come True
Format: LP
Label: Feeding Tube
Country: USA
Price: $18.00
"This is the vinylization of the fourth solo album (originally released on cassette by Ramp Local) by Nina Ryser, she of the trio, Palberta. Palbertas releases have all been quite amazing -- ragged bags filled with musical lumps of the finest kind imaginable. Comparisons have been drawn (and quite rightly) between Palberta and units ranging from Kleenex to Aunt Sally to the Raincoats, so anticipation for this new album was kite-high and rising. I Hope All Your Dreams Come True veers from the rockist traits Palberta sometimes displays to a sound far more personal, electronics-spattered and specifically warped, momentarily reminding this listener of individual post-X Ray Spex projects by both Poly Styrene and Lora Logic. The small extra contributions by Gods Wisdom (vocals) and Gabe Adels (clarinet) do little to change the lonerist vibe. It all feels like music that has been bubbling inside a single head, without any plans to have its expressionism filtered through other brain waves. The album is interspersed with three variant and fragmentary covers of The Cradles Abdicate, recorded by Anina Ivory-Black (also of Palberta), but trying to figure out what these mean is above my pay grade. Suffice to say, theyre interesting breaks in the continuity of an alternately smudgy and frantic set of tunes. There is also one track recorded back on 2001 thats like a Throwback Thursday snap for old school Brooklynites. Ive listened to this a bunch now, and its hard to describe exactly what the center of the project is about, but its certainly chewy and delicious. So what the hell? Dig in!" - Byron Coley, 2017. Title: Buchla Concerts 1975
Format: LP
Label: Finders Keepers
Country: UK
Price: $28.00
Repressed. "The lost synth manifesto that could have changed the course of electronic music history by the first lady of modular synth history, Suzanne Ciani. Buchla Concerts 1975 is an archival project that not only redefines musical history but boasts genuine claim to such overused buzzwords as pioneering, maverick, experimental, groundbreaking, and esoteric, while questioning social politics and the evolution of music technology as weve come to understand it. To describe this record as a game-changer is an understatement. This record represents a musical revolution, a scientific benchmark, and a trophy in the cabinet of counterculture creativity. This record is a triumphant yardstick in the synthesizer space race and the untold story of the first woman on the proverbial moon. While pondering the early accolades of this record its daunting to learn that this record was in fact not a record at all . . . it was a manifesto and a gateway to a new world that somehow never quite opened. In 1975, Suzanne Ciani was a 29-year-old employee of the Buchla modular synthesizer company, San Franciscos neck-and-neck contender with New Yorks Moog. If the unfamiliar, modernistic, melodic pulses, tones, and harmonics found on this 1975 live presentation/grant application/educational demonstration had been placed in a phonographic context, they would have provided nothing short of an entirely different, feminine take on the experimental records of Morton Subotnick and proved to a small, judgmental audience and jury the true versatility of one of the most radical and idiosyncratic musical instruments of the 20th century. In denouncing her own precocious, polymathematic past in a bid to persuade the world to sing from a new hymn sheet, Suzanne Ciani created a byproduct of never-before-heard music that would render the pigeonholes "ambient" and "futuristic" utterly inadequate. These recordings have not been heard since then. Needless to say, this record, finally commanding the archival format of choice, was not the last "first" that this hugely important composer would gift to society and the future, in a wide range of exciting, evolving creative disciplines in the worlds of synth design, advertising, and film composition. You have found a holy grail of electronic music and a female musical pioneer who was too proactive to take the trophies. You cant write history when you are too busy making it. With fresh ink in the bottomless well, lets start at the beginning. Again. You are invited." - Finders Keepers.

Format: Cass
Label: Finders Keepers

"Comes in a marshmallow colored shell. Imagine, if you will, a foreboding homemade electro-acoustic, new age, synth-driven, proto-techno, imaginary world music created on a Portastudio soundtrack for a Polish-made animated fantasy based on a Finnish modern folk tale and created for German and Austrian TV, composed in 1982 by two politically-driven post-punk theater performers from a shared house in Leeds. To even the most perspicacious and adventurous of alternative music fans, the genuine bloodline of this previously unreleased record already begins to sound like an entire record collection in one sitting. It would be surprising if this projects ambitious and exotic credentials didnt tick at least one box on your musical matrix and without one drop of unnecessary nostalgic hyperbole this project already sounds like the perfect fantasy record that youve never heard. From the same social landscape as Gang Of Four, The Mekons, and Impact Theatre Co-operative - armed with a Wasp synthesizer, an ocarina, and a cassette of the Robinson Crusoe music taped off the TV, Graeme Miller and Steve Shill used minimum means for maximum mayhem, instilling over 35 years of dream-like illusory fuzziness and freakiness into the memories of a generation of school age TV addicts waiting for the next five minute fix of outer national fuzzy felt folklore. Collected here, all in one place for the first time, Finders Keepers, in close collaboration with the original composers, present the first-ever full soundtrack release for the UK-specific cult animated series. Finders Keepers take the original homemade micro-melodies and reintroduce them to a musical landscape where fans of vintage electronics, concrète tape effects, pocket percussion, and domestic synths are finally ready to be reunited with the magnetic music of Moominvalley." - Finders Keepers.

Title: Belladonna
Format: LP
Label: Finders Keepers
Country: UK
Price: $28.00
"There was a time when the strength of a musicians vision transcended all labels; here is a chance to dip into that pool again, and emerge not just refreshed, but alive again with the sense that we all can live in that world again, but most importantly raise the flag for excellence. Fantastic." -Jim ORourke.
"An unholy grail of near-mythical status is finally now available in the form of this first-ever reissue. Masahiko Sato composed this elusive, sensual, psychedelic free jazz score for the stunning 1973 Japanese witchcraft animation Belladonna of Sadness (Kanashimi no Belladonna) directed by Eiichi Yamamoto. Since the mid-2000s, Belladonna of Sadness has risen from the ashes and now shines brighter than ever. Now, on the eve of its third or fourth global DVD release in 2015, fans no longer have to settle for third-generation VHS telecine dubs or stuff their wish-lists into the hands of lucky friends visiting Tokyo. Belladonna has been used as nightclub projections by clued-up VJs and been restored by discerning feminist folk singers and improv bands while influencing illustrators, fashion designers, and other creative types along the way. Original copies of the soundtrack, however, are much less likely to rear their heads, with prices literally doubling each time the original stock copies swap hands among the same Italian dealers at central European record fairs. Italian soundtracks are expensive anyway, but this one, originally released by the Italian Cinevox label in 1975, has extra credentials. Finders Keepers Records and Sato himself agreed that this record should finally be liberated among those who know the magic words. With the decision to keep this album "strictly Sato," a track from the original release has been removed -- the main orchestral love theme by Asei Kobayashi and Mayumi Tachibana -- which in all honesty is very much detached from Satos psychedelic soundtrack. Kept intact, however, are the songs sung and penned by Satos wife at the time, Chinatsu Nakayama, including the track titled "TBFS," which only appears on the master tapes and never actually made it onto the theatrical cut of the film (though the theme is briefly alluded to, with different instrumentation, in a cut-scene available on the German DVD release). This reissue project also marks the beginning of a longer intended relationship between Finders Keepers and Masahiko Sato, exploring his recorded work in film music, jazz, and avant-garde composition.” - Finders Keepers.

Title: s/t
Format: Double LP
Label: Future Days
Country: USA
Price: $31.00
Double LP version housed in a deluxe gatefold tip-on jacket and limited to 1000 copies. "Apostolic was many things: a label, a collective, a state of mind even. But before all of that, it was a recording studio set up by New Yorker John Townley. As a member of the Magicians, (you recognize that name from the Nuggets albums), Townley worked in some of the finest studios in the USA, but he felt he was on a conveyor belt. “You had to do the creation ahead of time, which is not my idea of a good time,” he says now. “You had all this stuff to play with, and you werent allowed to play with it.” When Townley came into an $85,000 inheritance he immediately invested in a loft building on 10th Street, New York, against the advice of, well, “everybody”. But there were fellow believers. Friends Matt Hoffman and Michael and Danny Weiss, heirs to the Weiss jewelry fortune, helped assemble the studio, which was built to bleeding-edge specifications and even had a 12-track recorder. Soon, it was attracting likeminded souls such as Frank Zappa, whose Mothers Of Invention recorded several landmark LPs at Apostolic. But the greatest example of the output of this artistic community is the sprawling double LP The Family of Apostolic. A utopian album inspired by global cultures ranging from Pakistani folk songs to Scottish traditional music and Chinese opera, it was made by a cast of 19, bonded by a desire to create “primitive performance art” from surrealist happenings. “The idea of Apostolic was that the whole operation was a family,” says Townley. “Anybody could do anything if they participated.” Despite the possibilities opened up by the studio and the chance to treat the desk as an instrument, The Family Of Apostolic is nonetheless a folk record at heart, and sounds downright spare in places. The experimentation was there in subtle ways, per Townleys desire for each song to be “like just a natural happening. We were trying to get a very close, upfront, live feeling.” Released under a deal with Vanguard, the rambling album proved too difficult to market. Singles were released under different artist names, serving only to confuse the public more. Soon the studio was heading down the tubes, thanks in part to Jimi Hendrixs multi-track studio Electric Lady opening two blocks away. And before long, the Apostolic dream was over. The album remains a curates egg, but one filled with delights. Opening track Redeemer asks, “O say, are you a true believer?” By the time youve listened to our deluxe reissue, you will be." - Future Days

Title: Preemptive Musical Offerings To Satisfy Our Future Masters
Format: LP
Label: Gagarin
Country: Germany
Price: $30.00
"For his next release on Felix Kubins Gagarin Records, multi-instrumentalist Adi Gelbart delivers twelve Preemptive Musical Offerings To Satisfy Our Future Masters. With a spiraling musical complexity reminiscent of film scores, BBC Radiophonic Workshop, library music, criminal swing, Russian vitamins, tinnitus twist, abstract jazz and musique concrète, Gelbart surpasses himself this time by augmenting his palette of instruments to the extent where he becomes a small orchestra. "The Source" of his musical identity plays "The Message" of synths, broken organs, harpsichord (!), double bass, horns, cymbals and crispy drum machines. Its a "Spacetime Reverie," where "Tsuburaya" blows "Leaves For Gamera" while "He Who Speaks Through Pyramids" walks through "Echoville" with "Dust" on his shoes, contemplating the "Birth Of Alpha" after "The Big Sleep." While humming to songs of the second moon, the "Harpsichord Automata" leads "The March Of The Thinking Machines" to a blissful silver big bang. The LP comes in a beautifully designed sleeve with cover artwork by Berlin-based German illustration star Benedikt Rugar, who has contributed to newspapers such as The New York Times and Spiegel, as well as numerous animation film festivals. A download card is included with the purchase of the record." - Gagarin.

Title: Werke Fur Schlagzeug Und Elektroakustische Gerate
Format: LP
Label: Gagarin
Country: Germany
Price: $28.00
"Werke Für Schlagzeug Und Elektroakustische Geräte ("Works for Percussion and Electro-Acoustic Devices") is the second album of the Polish percussion duo Miłosz Pękala and Magda Kordylasińska. The compositions "Renaissance Gameboy #1" and "#2" (2011) by Felix Kubin were originally written for violin, saxophone, cello, piano, drums, and tape. The new versions arranged by the duo transport his pieces into the world of an extended percussion set, with marimba and vibraphone placed in the center. Additionally, several parts were recorded on tape. "Black Page #1" by Frank Zappa features close-miking recordings of guiro, reco-reco, temple blocks, and everyday objects like cups and computer. The pulse generated by dripping water and unusual percussive sets provide a new, intimate interpretation of Zappas dynamic music. Minimal music has always had a special place in the hearts of the Polish duo. In "Vermont Counterpoint" (1982) by Steve Reich, they replace the orchestra (including flutes) with vibraphone, glockenspiel, marimba, and dulcimer. By including Reichs composition on this record, Pękala and Kordylasińska refer to their own musical roots. Repetitiveness can also be heard in a piece entitled "Smells Like Victory" (2016) commissioned to Thymme Jones, the founder of a band called Cheer Accident. The composition is written for marimba, vibraphone, two Chinese gongs, electronics, and includes choreography. "Modular #1" (2016) by Miłosz Pękala completes the album. Its based on a rhythmic pattern generated by a modular synthesizer. Ongoing permeation of electronic and acoustic sounds with dynamic narrative creates a fertile ground for the musicians expression as percussionists and at the same time gives them great pleasure as players. Pękala and Kordylasińska on the album: "This album is a next step in exploring the world of percussive instruments. We recorded it mainly out of urge to present our experience as musicians of the twenty first century surrounded by contemporary art." The album comes in a special sleeve with golden hotstamp printing designed by Polish musician and artist Macio Moretti." - Gagarin.

Artist: SPLITTER ORCHESTER/FELIX KUBIN
Title: Shine On You Crazy Diagram
Format: LP
Label: Gagarin
Country: USA
Price: $28.00
"Triggered by the 2015 edition of the Labor Sonor Festival "Translating Music" in Berlin, this split album between the Splitter Orchester and Felix Kubin offers two sides of the same coin, sometimes appearing like the rendering of an identikit picture. Taking up side A of the album, the Splitter Orchester remains faithful to its trademark technique of improvised composition. Their sound carries the spirit of artists like Jani Christou, John Cage, Franco Evangelisti, and the Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza, taking it further to the 21st century and strictly avoiding any scores. Specially built and prepared instruments add to the complexity of sound layers that slowly unfold, filling both an imaginary and physical space. Starting with a short piano loop, "Diagram 1" turns into a darker drone cut by crashing glasses, giving it an almost Hörspiele-like character. "Diagram 2" is a piece about transformation and metamorphosis which starts with airy highest tones that unravel into a sort of chanting before slowly descending downwards, reaching deeper realms of rumbling which culminate in brutal noise. On side B, Felix Kubin reinterprets these tracks, creating a physically closer and blunter atmosphere, which turns the distant dreamlike atmosphere of side A into a state of awakening. His two versions present a more systematic technique, counteracting the subconscious swarm composition of the Orchester. For his take on "Diagram 1", under the title "Lückenschere", he uses a sequenced sample of the piano loop which generates different dynamics, spiraling over sequencer variations. Much rawer and with aspects of minimal music is "Lichtsplitter", a pure electronic blueprint of "Diagram 2", that involves a black and white score drawing turned into sound with an eight-channel light scanner. The Splitter Orchester, founded in 2010, is a Berlin-based collection of internationally respected composer-performers which draws inspiration from many genres, most noticeably contemporary/improvised music. Splitter Orchester originates from the "Echtzeitmusik" scene, which emerged in Berlin in the mid-1990s - a locally based and globally networked experimental music scene and long-term platform for the exchange of artistic ideas." - Gagarin.

Title: The Electronic Tapes
Format: LP
Label: Habibi Funk
Country: Germany
Price: $29.00
"Unreleased early Algerian synth electronic by Ahmed Malek, compiled and co-produced by Flako. In the early 1980s, Ahmed Malek was already in his 50s, when he discovered synthesizers and electronic music for himself and started to experiment with sounds. The result was a mixture of ambient synth music, field recordings he made in Cuba and a wide variation of different sound experiments that he also presented as different avanguarde music festivals in Cuba and the US. None of it was ever released but we got a huge box of master tapes from his family and were happy to present this different side of Ahmed Maleks music. It was compiled and co-produced by Flako, a fan of early electronic and synth music. This is not a remix album though, Flakos aim was to create an album out of 2 hours of material that sounds like it might have if Mr. Malek would have finished it himself before of his death. Fully approved and licensed from the artists family. The album comes with an informative booklet with liner notes, an interview with Flako regarding his approach towards the production and unseen photos. We will also release a third album by Ahmed Malek which will be more in the vein again of the music he is known for and this album will also be previously unreleased." - Habibi Funk.

Title: Unfold
Format: Double LP
Label: Ideologic Organ
Country: France
Price: $31.00
"Ideologic Organ present Unfold, brand-new recordings from The Necks, the legendary Australian trio who excel in bypassing musical cliche whilst exploring and extending the practices embedded within improvisation, jazz, post rock, ambient, minimal, and textural, "sound based" music. The latest document from this long-running ensemble presents itself as a double LP, with four side-length tracks. A deliberate absence of numbered sides hands a substantial swatch of participation over to the listener, allowing her to navigate his own path through the soundscape at hand. The shorter length of the vinyl format, far from being a constraint upon the members of the ensemble, instead offers them a more compact horizon to contemplate, wherein the distance travelled is recalibrated to more immediate and dynamic textural concerns. The immediacy of "Rise" confirms this new path, as the mournful tones of Lloyd Swantons bass swirl around Chris Abrahamss crystalline piano motif, with Tony Bucks percussion steering proceedings into enlightening free-jazz territories. "Blue Mountain" cuts a swathe through the sonic undergrowth, with soul organ, rattling percussion, whistles, and loping sound-waves all vying for the foreground. "Overhear" retains a sublime melancholic aura as the percussion and keyboards simultaneously embrace and fall apart, whilst "Timepiece" skips along as a gentle gesture of further possibilities. Exactly how The Necks conjure their particular magic - as deceptively simple as it seems - whilst always moving forward, is anyones guess, but Unfold proves yet again that rules and schools are to be broken and re-formed into patterns and frameworks unlike those already known. Mastered & cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering." - Ideologic Organ.

"Includes liner notes & archival photographs. 1970 was an important year in Eliane Radigues musical life since it was the year just before she acquired her ARP 2500 synthesizer. Since 1967, she had been using the feedback as a material; feedback from two tape recorders reworked through intensive studio techniques: slowing down, alteration, superimposition, montage. In 1970, the last year she dedicated to feedback, several milestone pieces saw the light of day: Omnht, a wonderful sound installation for three out-of-phase tape loops and wall-mounted loudspeakers; the theoretical setting ofLabyrinthe Sonore (eventually premiered at Mills College in 1998 in collaboration with Pauline Oliveros, Maggie Payne and William Winant, amongst others);Opus 17, one of her first compositions in fixed duration (according to Rhys Chatham, a decisive piece that would change his own compositional career); andVice-Versa, etc..., which appears to be her very last feedback loop composition. Vice-Versa, etc... was conceived as a sound installation setting similar toS=a=b=a+b. A single magnetic tape can be played at any speed, a stereo tape of which allows three playings: left channel alone, right channel alone, left and right channels together. These different channels can be overlapped/crossed over as much as possible, at any speed. Thus the piece reveals itself in its whole dimension, its infinite grace. In its content, the piece is the most minimal that Eliane Radigue has ever composed. Feedback is horizontally sustained, time is suspended, vibrating with organic and subtle pulsations. The fastest playthrough, in just 242", weaves a graceful continuum of uncanny depth, somewhere between the sonority of feedback and a glass harmonica. Played slowly, at 1341", it takes us into an universe of low frequency vibrations felt as much by the guts, the ribcage and the whole body as by the eardrum: the signature sound of Eliane Radigue. Between these two extremes, many delicate shadings/variations appear simply through speed modulation. What is striking about this work, which may arguably be one of Radigues most important compositions, is the extraordinary quality of the tones obtained from such a rudimentary material. It is hard to believe that the composer was yet to begin working on her ARP, since the sonorities heard on Vice-Versa, etc... are surprisingly similar to those she would go on to produce with her synthesizer. Vice-Versa, etc... is a minimal work which possesses an infinity of possible variations, a secret object containing the seeds of the oeuvre to come, and a discreet turning point linking the composers two important working phases, an extremely subtle cross-fade between her feedback loop period to her ARP period. Originally, only ten signed and numbered copies of this little boxset containing a magnetic tape and a handwritten note were released -- needless to say this is a work that has been nearly forgotten! We have decided to reissue this object as a double CD, with the tape played respectively forwards and backwards, at four different speeds, corresponding to the standards of the tape recorders of the time. This will allow dedicated listeners to experiment with simultaneous playback of the works different versions, recreating the conditions of the original installation. For lazier listeners, a simple playthrough provides complete satisfaction, a listening experience that loses itself in the ineffable and discreet beauty of these four variations." - Important.

Title: Spiritual Jazz 7: Islam
Format: Double LP
Label: Jazzman
Country: UK
Price: $27.00
"Gatefold sleeve. Esoteric, modal, and progressive jazz, inspired by Islam and recorded between 1957-1988. Songs ancient and divine - the seventh volume of Jazzman Records acclaimed Spiritual Jazz series examines the influence and impact of Islam on four decades of jazz innovation. Through Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali, the civil rights era in America saw African American liberation politics famously associated with Islamic belief. This was not the first time that radical developments in African American cultural life had been widely and famously associated with Islam - that distinction belongs not to political or sporting giants, but to the progressive jazz musicians of the bebop generation. Kenny Clarke, Art Blakey, Sahib Shihab, Gigi Gryce, Idrees Sulieman, Ahmad Jamal, Yusef Lateef; all these legendary jazz pioneers - and countless more - were early converts to the spiritually charged Ahmadiyya school of Islam. Their faith profoundly influenced the music that they made, and the presence of prominent and innovative Muslim musicians at the heart of jazz culture in America has been recognized ever since. The tracks on this collection follow the story of Islam and jazz from the 1950s to the 1980s. Recorded by Muslim jazz musicians, they often draw specifically on Middle Eastern or Islamic music, dream of an esoteric or spiritual Afro-East, or invoke the landscape and sound worlds of Islamic Africa. Spiritual Jazz 7 presents a selection of visionary music - inspired by faith, powered by jazz. Many tracks never before reissued. Features: Maurice McIntyre, Kahil ElZabars Ritual Trio with Malachi Favors & Ari Brown, Pharoah Sanders, Emmanuel Abdul-Rahim, Creative Arts Ensemble, East New York Ensemble De Music, Idrees Sulieman, Jamila Sulieman, Yusef Lateef, Sabu Martinez & Sahib Shihab, Abdelrahman Abdo Elkhatib, Solar Plexus, The Lightmen Plus One, Ahmed Abdul-Malik, and Dawan Muhammad. Double LP version comes in gatefold a sleeve with extensive liner notes and pictures." - Jazzman.

Title: Sunday Night, Sunday Afternoon
Format: LP
Label: Kye
Country: USA
Price: $15.00
"Sunday Night, Sunday Afternoon is the debut LP by the duo of Marcia Bassett and Samara Lubelski. Both musicians have played crucial roles in the development of underground sound over the last 20 years, tinting the broad waters of abstract folk, chromatic noise and long form drone, and cementing themselves as cornerstone artists in the process. Sunday Night, Sunday Afternoon is the perfect synthesis of Bassett and Lubelskis individual crafts - two sidelong forays into deep black string meditation that hang in the air like ghosts on Ludlow Street. Sunday Night, Sunday Afternoon was recorded/mixed by Barry Weisblat in 2010 in Brooklyn, NY, and arrives in a high gloss monochrome sleeve, in an edition of 500 copies." -Kye.

Title: Nobody Knows Heaven
Format: LP
Label: Lion Productions
Country: USA
Price: $32.00
"Its 1974 in Paris. Two young guys in their bed-sit (one of whom is French music maven/famous producer Jay Alanski) are dreaming counter-cultural dreams, spinning their own eternal versions of California and New York. The result of those imaginings is this album, a child begotten of Baudelaire, Lautréamont—and Marc Bolan. Its a fascinating record, engaging as it is scarce (as in impossible to find): a look into a parallel pop universe. Somehow, the duo got their record released on Monde Melodys one-off “Silk” imprint. And what twisted songs (in English) they managed to squeeze into a fifty-minute slab of vinyl! The music drips with deep nostalgia for the decadent “beautiful people” who lived and breathed and then found a home in the songs of Lou Reed and Leonard Cohen, pervaded throughout with a kind of psychedelic sadness. All of this is expressed by means of long jagged acid guitar runs (or in acoustic strums) supported by Moroccan percussion (bongos?) and heavy bass lines from Christophe J. If the LP had been released in 1971, everyone would point to T-Rex as an influence, and call it “glam folk”; fast forward to today and its hard not to think “loner,” and draw comparisons with the music of Devendra Banhart or others who have followed his lead into the consciousness of the greater music loving public." - Lion Productions.

“Were now decades further on in the worlds slow self-destruction, but this sole recording by the Beautiful Losers has lost nothing of its freshness and superb arrogance. Blessed be the listener who is going to discover such a hidden treasure!” —Jean-Emmanuel Deluxe.

Title: Astral Disaster (yellow vinyl) LP
Format: LP
Label: Lion Productions
Country: USA
Price: $25.00
"In 1998, Coil were invited to record at Sun Dials studios beneath the London Bridge Hop Exchange—a studio originally know as Samurai Studios, originally built and owned by Iron Maiden. The premises in Victorian times was an old debtors prison which had three underground levels, and still had the original chains, manacles and wrought iron doors from the old prison. This caught the attention of John Balance, who was very keen to record there. Coil spent a number of days recording at the studio during Halloween 1998. With Gary Ramons help, they developed a number of tracks, some of which resulted in this LP. Ramon produced and mixed the Astral Disaster recordings, as well as playing guitar and sitar on these sessions. A version of the album was later remixed by the band and released on their own label—but the Prescription mixes as released in 1999 are unique.

This rare album was part of the legendary subscription-only Prescription label album series in the late 1990s, issued in an edition of 99 signed and numbered copies, long since sold out. (If you are wondering, originals fetch £700+). This is the first time the album is being released officially since 1999. Taken from the original masters, this reissue comes with original sleeve artwork, insert, and the facsimile signatures of John Balance and Peter Christopherson that came with the first issue." - Lion Productions.

Title: Hubris
Format: LP
Label: Mego
Country: Austria
Price: $22.00
"Hubris continues the exploration of relentless, driving rhythms heard on Oren Ambarchis Sagittarian Domain (EMEGO 144CD/LP, 2012) and Quixotism (EMEGO 202CD/LP, 2014). Where those records looked to krautrock and techno for their starting points, the side-long opening track on Hubris begins from the perhaps unlikely inspirations of disco and new wave, drawing particularly from Ambarchis love of Wang Chungs soundtrack to William Friedkins To Live and Die in L.A. (1985). Leaving behind the song-forms of these reference points, Ambarchi weaves a sustained and pulsating web of layered palm-muted guitars from which individual voices rise up and recede, eventually setting the stage for some lush guitar synth from Jim ORourke. Arnold Dreyblatt collaborator Konrad Sprenger contributes overtone-rich motorized guitar, pushing the piece into a satisfying intersection of shimmering minimalism and rhythmic drive that smoothly builds up until the entrance of Mark Fells electronic percussion in its final section. After a short second part, in which Ambarchi, ORourke and Crys Cole pay tribute to the skewed harmonic sense of Albert Marcoeur with a track built from layered bass guitar figures and abstracted speech, the long final piece pushes the concept of the first side into darker and denser areas. Joined by electronic rhythms from Ricardo Villalobos and the twin drums of Joe Talia and Will Guthrie, the layered guitars of the first piece are transformed into a raw and tumbling fusion-funk groove that calls to mind early Weather Report or even the first Golden Palominos LP (1983). As this stellar rhythm section rides a single repeated chord change into oblivion, a series of spectacular events emerge in the foreground: first, aleatoric synthesizer burbles from Keith Fullerton Whitman, then slashing skronk guitar from Arto Lindsay, until finally Ambarchis own fuzzed-out guitar harmonics take center stage as the piece builds to an ecstatic frenzy. Few artists could hope to include such an incredible variety of collaborators on one record and still hope for it to have a unique identity, but Ambarchi manages to do just that, crafting three pieces that emerge directly out of his previous work while also pushing ahead into new dimensions." - Francis Plagne. Title: Piano Gaucho
Format: Cass
Label: No Rent
Country: USA
Price: $8.00
Edition of 100. "Piano Gaucho carefully develops Bob Bellerues tonal infatuation with rendering the piano into a demonic ingress. The piano functions as an essential frame for amps, speakers, mics, pickups, pedals, laptop, and guts to negotiate and re-evaluate the fated instrument into a much more heinous sonic source.Bellerues experiments with the instrument mark time slowly against a rotating core of oscillating feedback — a cold, gradual pace that proceeds solemnly. Fascinated with the suspended tension of the piano strings, the pieces deliberate pace casts long, shadowy passages of sound — forgoing any rhythmic brutalism in favor of an anxiety that evolves within long intervals of empty space. The exorcised tones breed within these open expanses. Recalling the grim work of bass experimentalists such asStephen OMalley or blackened Scandinavian film scores — and all the images contained therein — Bellerue roots the instrumental role of the piano firmly within this space. A wicked piano music is revealed; his commitment to instruments sinister potential is total." - Nick Scavo.

Title: Everything Else
Format: Cass
Label: No Rent
Country: USA
Price: $8.00
"The latest work from composer Sarah Hennies is percussion in the sense that a contemporary definition of “percussion” has the potential to include almost anything that isnt already defined as some other instrument (cello, piano, clarinet, etc.). Hennies draws parallels between queer identities and being a percussionist in that both are most often defined by what they are not.
The two sides of the tape are 20-minute blocks of sound/activity seemingly without direction. A-side “Falsetto” is for “low-quality” bells found at thrift stores and flea markets while the title track explores a harder-to-define space. Edition of 200" - No Rent.

Title: These
Format: LP

Price: $23.00
"Wherein we come upon three visceralists who have been collaborating for years - innumerable instances in a roulette wheel of settings -- finally shacking up in a studio and fashioning a proper trio record. Glory be. Lets listen in-- These. Its a phrase that never gets started, and an apt title for this record, which right off bolts from the barn and burns so brightly it nearly gets away from you by the time youre done twisting your head around looking for whoever it was that left the door open. He asked me when I planned to come back. Always, I said. Naces guitar mines savage depths, egging on the propulsive swing of Flaherty and Corsano. The results are as beastly as the heart itself. Swing. Bounce. Joust. Jab. Uppercut. Flutter. Wink. Sneer. They all play with anguish and ecstatic rupture -- the frustrating joy of pushing an instrument to its limits, fashioning a necessary and brutal needlepoint. They move with all the otherworldly elegance and mania of moths at a lamp show. The music asks no specific questions, but wrenches open a space for all manner of questions -- this is one of arts most vital functions! It deals in shades, no matter how sharp the apparent angle. Check out the second track on the first side: the solemn bells of Bills guitar signal not so much a funeral, but a new dawn after a tragedy. Flahertys saxophone sounds innocent, almost tentative at first, but as Chris drums chime in, Paul starts to wrench the fabric loose. The track builds into a fierce and alien vista, charting a territory all its own -- a simmering judgement. It becomes hard to talk about. Didnt you ever try to eat your own tail in the midday sun? No? These three, whose veins are coursing straight through with a nuanced emotional lexicon and the smarts to harness it, have given us a record that expands potential with each listen." - Matt Krefting, Holyoke, MA 2017.

"Well-documented as one of Frank Zappas favorite ever groups and instantly recognizable as the blueprint of 80s Mancunian electro pop, the inflated alter-egos of Gerry & The Holograms (and their unrivaled brand of conceptual sarcastic synth pop) successfully remodeled, ridiculed, and redefined plugged-in punk before hitting the self-destruct button and burying the evidence under a pile of hand-mutilated microgrooves for over 35 wet summers. Having risen from the electronic embers of Manchesters first genuine psychedelic band, via Vertigo commissioned prog and experimental theater, then refined through the musical mind behind the most inspired vinyl moments of Martin Hannett, John Cooper Clarke, and Jilted John - the discography of the GATH anti-band remains unrivaled as the most idiosyncratic and enigmatic pivotal post-punk artifact from the first electronic entrenchment of pop. The first-and-only listenable two track record by this masked art-rock studio duo, entitled Meet The Dissidents, originally appeared in record racks in 1979, selling-out instantly only to be sequel-ized by a totally unplayable situationist-inspired follow-up which was glued into its own sleeve destroying the grooves in the process (rivalling that of Peter Saville and Durutti Columns Debordist sandpaper re-hash by at least three years). With a life-span shorter than the hours on their studio bill, the band would find bedfellows amongst other incognito groups like Naffi Sandwich, The Mothmen, and Blah Blah Blah within the Absurd Records stable - a daring Mancunian imprint that sat awkwardly between older and younger half-sister labels Rabid and Relentless. With an 11 release library of mostly non-returning faceless atonal electronic punk/DIY industrial bands, Absurd would spearhead and pre-empt the subsequent decades of Mancunian independent record labels that followed in the footsteps of the more commercially successful Factory Records. Despite just one official title to their name however, the true identity behind Gerry And The Holograms would unify those sister-labels and collectively play an important supporting role in Manchesters independent music history with a story which goes back as far as most rain soaked memories can attempt to forget. On Thursday July 2, 2015, The Guardian Newspaper published an article with the snappy title "The Great RocknRoll Swindle - 10 Classic Stolen Pop Songs From Saint Louis Blues To Blue Monday" in which journalist Clinton Heylin made the claim that "If Blue Monday had a starting point, it was Gerry and the Holograms" illustrating the vivid similarities between the two tracks." - Cache Cache.

"The C&B is short for Cat & Bells Club, a brief precursor that would soon be transformed into the estimable poetics of The Shadow Ring. Studious fans of the bands releases may recognize this name from the whimsical word search found on the back cover of their 1995 7, Some Of Us. Ah, finally; mystery solved & now all the ducks are on the pond. While early Shadow Ring managed to fuse equal parts Tyrannosaurus Rex mystical recitations w/Throbbing Gristle aural idolatry, The C&B seem divinely born out of the sputtering taps of brown ale that flowed freely down the gullets of various 1st generation DIY shufflers, most notably, 49 Americans or Door And The Window. And while this is just dumb luck, theres no denying a genus, unintentional as it may be. The templates for the ruminative, droll & original wordsmithing not to mention the threadbare musical accompaniment that would soon become the hallmark for The Shadow Ring sound are now available for the 1st time ever in a 300 press 7", 4 track ep. Beiles worked in Paris as chief editor for publisher Maurice Girodias Olympia Press and established links with the American beat generation of writers, particularly Allen Ginsberg, Brion Gysin, Gregory Corso and William Burroughs. Together they collaborated on the legendary collection of Dadaist cut-ups, Minutes to Go. When the Paris scene fell apart in the early sixties, he left for Greece. In 1969 Beiles published a volume of poetry Ashes of experience, his first substantial publication.
Beiles returned to South Africa in the seventies and later married fellow poet Marta Proctor. They moved into a house in Yeoville, Johannesburg and soon became part of the Yeoville artistic group in the eighties. He often performed his poetry live, at venues such as the Black Sun. In 1997 Beiles finally received some recognition when the French Cultural Institute and the British Council of Johannesburg organised a Beat Hotel exhibition in Carfax where Beiles read his poems. Beiles had a history of mental instability and his illness made him at times unpredictable and volatile. ‘Chopin in Majorca is a one-man play and was recorded in 1989. Cover photo by Gerard Bellaart. "Free-rock cosmic feedback by way of acid folk explorations. This feels like a classic Westcoast styled psych version of Amon Düül II. 70 copies." - Sloow Tapes. "favored psychedelic free rock outfit makes a triumphant return to SLOOW TAPES, a most revered label around these parts, six years gone by since THE CREATOR HAS A FASTER VAN, which seems to have been a watershed moment of sorts for DW, a crucial inflection point, both stylistically and realistically as they went on an apparent hiatus thereafter til 2015s THE BERNAL CODEX [REC #79] and since then they have established themselves as one of thee preeminent purveyors of stoner psych improvisation, providing an ever crystallizing mystic moody counterpoint to the freaked out pummel of tangential free rock contemporaries BURNT HILLS and DSDV --though magnum opus THE GRAND CELESTIAL PURGE [REC #133] is certainly more parallel to DWs trajectory-- while providing an alternate "classic west coast" interpretation of old guard krautrock opposite the peculiar strain of rural kosmische rethinkers in MENDOCINO and VON HIMMEL.

DRUMBAR AND BASSPEAR is a righteous offering of two sidelong excursions, thick smoky basement jams, improvised spiritualized bliss, honed on side one like an impossible AMON DUUL II aria featuring CHRISTINA CARTER and PHAROAH SANDERS, somehow distantly yet distinctly channeling THE BEATLES "taxman" and PERE UBU "laughing", then zoned way out on side two like CANs "yoo doo right" meets COMUS meets TONY CONRAD WITH FAUST -- sweet fancy moses, look out for side two -- hot on the heels of their vinyl debut EXCURSIONS TO CLOUDLAND (or rather ahead, as the vinyl was delayed) comes this more narrowly targeted missive of supreme third eye gazing, soothing an itch scarcely scratched - like EXCURSIONS and other recent DW works, fans of BARDO POND and HERON OBLIVION ought to take note, but for best results i say consider the more immersed vibes of HERBCRAFT and MV & EE. i kinda wanna say this is their best, but i kinda wanna say that about all their albums" - PSI Lab.

Title: Sloow Tapes Broadside #11: Wise to Its Poisoned Condition
Format: Broadside
Label: Sloow Tapes

Price: $3.00
"Between 1960 and 1963 Norse lived in Paris with William Burroughs, Ginsberg and Gregory Corso in the hotel in the Latin Quarter known as the "Beat Hotel". Although initially wary of the Beat writers literary credentials, Norse collaborated with Brion Gysin on the cut-up technique and was briefly an acclaimed painter of ink drawings soaked in the hotel bidet, known as Cosmographs.
Norse described himself as a "lone-wolf" and he refused to join the pack, at some cost. In many ways he was more "Beat" than the Beats: Jewish, illegitimate, homosexual, Norse was an outsider who quietly produced some startling and technically accomplished verse from the fringes of the US literary scene. ‘Wise to Its Poisoned Condition’ is an unpublished poem written at the time he lived at the Beat Hotel and illustrated with a mylar portrait by Ira Cohen. A5 size." - Sloow Tapes.

"...The energy which can be created and released by two or three poets working on common ground rather than with their personal material can be as great a force as that often experienced through jazz improvisation... We feel that it is not only we who will benefit for whilst this is an important experiment, it is not one for its own sake having the immediate appeal, energy and potency of street theatre, rock bands, jazz buzz, ritual chants. Urgent perhaps.. Each performance develops from and heads towards the next." - artists liner notes, London 1976.

Title: Motore Immobile
Format: LP
Label: Soave
Country: Italy
Price: $31.00
"Soave present the first vinyl reissue of Giusto Pios Motore Immobile, originally released in 1979. One of the most striking documents of Italys minimalist movement, Giusto Pios Motore Immobile is a masterwork with few equivalents. Produced by Franco Battiato in 1979, at the outset of a long and fruitful period of collaboration between the two composers, and issued by the legendary Cramps Records, its triumphs were met by silence, before falling from view. Emerging on vinyl for the first time since its original pressing, Motore Immobile now sits within a reappraisal of a large neglected body of efforts made by the Italian avant-garde during the second half of the 1970s and early 80s. It is singular, but not alone. It resonates within a collective world of shimmering sound, one familiar to fans of Battiato, Lino Capra Vaccina, Luciano Cilio, Roberto Cacciapaglia, Francesco Messina, and Raul Lovisoni. An exercise in elegant restraint - note and resonance held to the most implicit need. Everything between root and embellishment has been stripped away. A sublime organ drone, against interventions of deceptively simple structural complexity - executed by piano, violin, and voice. A sonic sculpture reaching heights which few have touched. A thing of beauty and an album as perfect as they come. The reemergence of Motore Immobile heralds what is unquestionably one of the most important reissues of 2017." - Soave.

Title: De-coll/age Musik
Format: LP
Label: Soave
Country: Italy
Price: $31.00
"Soave present the first vinyl reissue of Wolf Vostells debut Dé-coll/age Musik, originally released in 1982. A seminal figure in the history of 20th century avant-garde, yet sinfully overlooked, Wolf Vostell unleashed ideas - those running wild through his debut LP Dé-coll/age Musik - which remain a slap to the face, more than half a century after they were set into play. A founding member of fluxus, an early instigator of happenings, an innovator of video art, Vostell was equally one of the most radical and irreverent practitioners in sound that the world has ever known. First released in 1982, Dé-coll/age Musik draws from material dating between the late 1950s and early 80s - the results of Vostells application of décollage, the near perfect inversion of collage. Rather than gathered and assembled sounds, as with musique concrète, these are the result of subtractions from a former whole - the death of one, giving life to the next. Swelling from the past, Vostells efforts pull the rug from beneath the common history of structured sound. A singular body with no loyalty, producing shocking results. A grinding confrontation - an intoxicating immersion in sound - as brutal as it is ecstatic - an exercise in joy. Dé-coll/age Musik assembles the essence of a creative spirit which is rarely known. Each work as radical and fresh today as the moment it was made. Comes in a gatefold sleeve." - Soave.

Artist: BERTOIA, HARRY
Title: Clear Sounds/Perfetta
Format: LP
Label: Sonambient
Country: USA
Price: $20.00
"After nearly 40 years of silence, Harry Bertoias Sonambient label has been resurrected in order to release the best of Bertoias unheard recordings from his recently preserved archive of 1/4" tapes. "Clear Sounds" b/w "Perfetta" was cut straight from the original reels and is a true analog pressing. These two pieces were selected for their minimal, meditative and lush harmonic qualities; lacking in the abundance of dynamics and contrasts found on the original Sonambient records, these pieces show another approach to performance. Slow washes of shimmering metallic sculpture rustle thickly like the leaves of a white birch or tall grass in the summer sun. Gorgeous harmonics hover overhead, making audible measurements of the length and purity of Bertoias metal rod sculptures. Both Harry Bertoia and his brother Oreste composed extensively in the Sonambient barn deep in the woods of rural Pennsylvania where Harry kept over 100 Sonambient sculptures and gongs. The first Sonambient LP Bellissima Bellissima Bellissima / Nova, released in 1970, contains a Harry Bertoia composition on side A and an Oreste Bertoia composition on side B. As an homage to the original Sonambient LP, "Clear Sounds" is a Harry Bertoia piece from June 30, 1973 and "Perfetta" is an Oreste Bertoia piece from June 28, 1971. Harry Bertoia first came into artistic prominence in the late 1930s and his sculptural, ergomonic chairs were soon modernist furniture classics. Inspired by the resonant sounds emanating from metals as he worked them and encouraged by his brother Oreste, whose passion was music, Harry restored a fieldstone "Pennsylvania Dutch" barn as the home for this experiment in sounding sculptures which he had begun in the 1950s. Bertoia was an obsessive composer and relentless experimenter, often working late into the night and accumulating hundreds of tapes of his best performances; Oreste, too, would explore and record the sculpturess sounds during his annual visits to his brothers home in rural Pennsylvania. Over nearly twenty years, adding, culling and rearranging, Bertoia carefully selected nearly 100 harmonious pieces ranging in height from under a foot to more than fifteen feet. Learning by experimentation was common for Bertoia and he mastered the art of tape recording, turning the Sonambient barn into a sound studio with four overhead microphones hanging from the rafters in a square formation. He would experiment with overdubbing by performing along to previous recordings, constantly improving his methods while also honing his performance skills." - Sonambient.

Title: 5 Octobre 1974
Format: Double LP
Label: Souffle Continu
Country: France
Price: $31.00
"Souffle Continu Records present the first vinyl reissue of Cohelmec Ensembles 5 Octobre 1974, originally released in 1974. Out of the musical effervescence in post May 1968 France were born the labels BYG and Futura Records. The concept of collective creation appeared as essential, of which Cohelmec Ensemble was a typical example: in such procedures, individual identities can of course still express themselves but framed within a non-hierarchical common thought process with the emphasis on experimentation. Music making becomes a shared pleasure with an established vocabulary, and is often accompanied by militant left wing activism; which feeds into an ethical form of creation. For their third, and what would turn out to be final album, the Cohelmec Ensemble chose to save for posterity their live performance work, on which their reputation was based. A concert recording was made, notable for the inclusion of trumpeter Jean-François Canape, and the group lost none of its subtlety in moving from studio to stage. On the contrary, the situation galvanized them on to higher energy levels, without leaving behind the typically complex structures, to which were added potent, flowing improvisations, longer than usual, confirming the high standard of free jazz being played in France in the 1970s. This was demonstrated not only by the Cohelmec Ensemble but also, in similar or quite different registers (who cares), by formations such Perception, Dharma Quintet, Free Jazz Workshop, Machi Oul, or Armonicord. Licensed from Cohelmec Ensemble. Deluxe reissue with high definition remastered audio; 12-page booklet on 200 gsm art paper. Includes liner notes and rare pictures; Gatefold double LP with obi strip; Edition of 500." - Souffle Continu.

Title: Hippotigris Zebra Zebra
Format: LP
Label: Souffle Continu
Country: France
Price: $25.00
"Souffle Continu Records present the first vinyl reissue of Cohelmec Ensembles Hippotigris Zebra Zebra, originally released in 1971. The Cohelmec Ensemble celebrate, above all, the pleasure of collective music-making. A group without a designated leader, they base their approach on reciprocal listening, but also on a dialogue between written and improvised material, in which all members have an equal responsibility whatever their instrument. This is even demonstrated in their name: COH as in Jean Cohen (saxophones), EL as in Dominique Elbaz (piano) and MEC as in the brothers François and Jean-Louis Méchali (respectively, amongst others, bass and drums), joined for this album by Evan Chandlee, known for his participation in Love Rejoice (1969) by Kenneth Terroade, and accepted, of course, as a full group member. Fitting together like hand in glove, the five musicians build something together, rather than trying to destroy an established order, as was the thing to do at the start of the 1970s, leaving the expression of an openly political agenda to others. In France, there was a tendency to explore an imaginary folklore which allowed certain elements of free jazz to be circumvented without being ignored. Which is why it is reminiscent of, in the melody of "Hippotigris Zebrazebra" when played with collective intensity, the best of American cosmic jazz, while also occasionally hearing McCoy Tyner or even Cecil Taylor under the fingers of Dominique Elbaz, or the vibraphone of Walt Dickerson evoked by Jean-Louis Méchali. Globally, however, their identity is original (even seminal), a fact which was to be confirmed by their next two recordings. For the record, it should be noted that the first album by the Free Jazz Workshop (from Lyon), another French group with a similar approach, would only be published two years later. Licensed from Cohelmec Ensemble. Deluxe reissue with high definition remastered audio; 12-page booklet on 200 gsm art paper. Includes liner notes and rare pictures; Gatefold LP with obi strip; Edition of 700." - Souffle Continu.

Title: Next
Format: LP
Label: Souffle Continu
Country: France
Price: $25.00
"Souffle Continu Records present the first vinyl reissue of Cohelmec Ensembles Next. The Cohelmec Ensemble celebrate, above all, the pleasure of collective music-making. A group without a designated leader, they base their approach on reciprocal listening and equal responsibilities. This is reflected in their name, created from the first syllables of the founding members names, which would remain unchanged in spite of the subsequent personnel changes: COH as in Jean Cohen (saxophones), EL as in Dominique Elbaz (piano) and MEC as in the brothers François and Jean-Louis Méchali (respectively, amongst others, bass and drums), Evan Chandlee joined them after they had already been playing together for a while, at the time they recorded their first album, 1971s Hippotigris Zebra Zebra (FFL 019LP). The follow-up (appropriately named Next) saw the original pianist leave, to be replaced by guitarist Joseph Dejean, who had already played with the Full Moon Ensemble, known for having accompanied Archie Shepp at the Antibes Jazz Festival in 1970. In spite of the personnel changes, the understanding and cohesion remain total within Cohelmec. They also maintain their trademark ambitious mix of written and improvised material. From this point of view, Next is even more audacious than its predecessor Hippotigris Zebra Zebra. Relatively brief tracks follow hot on the heels of one another, bolstered by a poly-instrumentality which stands out even more than in the past, giving the album the feel of a contrasting suite. There is a lot going on, leading to evocative atmospheres in which rigor and fantasy go happily hand in hand. Which is enough to say that this album should please fans of a style of free (chamber?) jazz which includes intelligent composed structures, a form in which French musicians have always demonstrated a personal approach, as in the example of Oeil Vision by Jef Gilson in 1964 (OI 012LP). Profoundly original and, it has to be said, seminal. Licensed from Cohelmec Ensemble. Deluxe reissue with high definition remastered audio; 12-page booklet on 200 gsm art paper. Includes liner notes and rare pictures; Gatefold LP with obi strip; Edition of 700." - Souffle Continu.

Title: Tinguely 1967
Format: LP
Label: Sub Rosa
Country: Belgium
Price: $16.00
"Unreleased material by Luc Ferrari, released here on Sub Rosas Early Electronic series. Two tracks from the forthcoming three-CD box set devoted to Luc Ferraris film music. Not only does the collection reveal a little-known chunk of Ferraris oeuvre as a composer for the screen, it also sheds light on the ties between cinema and musique concrète, especially during the fruitful period that stretched from the 1960s to the 1980s. Tinguely (1967) is a musique concrète piece for a television program by C. Caspari. From recordings made by the composer in 1966 at an exhibition of Jean Tinguelys work. Once the 110V Liliput engine is turned on, the sculptures start moving instantly in unpredictable ways, as if they had suddenly become frantic. They move in disorganized and excited ways; each action brings them on the verge of self-destruction. Tinguelys "Balubas" illustrate how ephemeral and intangible art and life are. The "Balubas" carry joy and despair, fascination and disillusionment. Dernier Matin dEdgar-Allan Poe (1964) is a musique concrete piece for a short 33mm black-and-white film by Jean Barral." - Sub Rosa.

"Victory present a reissue of Pacific, originally released in 1978. Reuniting the best session musicians Japan had to offer to make an album that would evoke the atmospheres of the South Pacific islands, the kind of places Japanese people spend their vacations. Pacific is a treat to the ears; its theme of the southern Pacific ocean and its warm cerulean waters relax its listeners with a fusion of city pop, soft jazz, and that good old 1970s funk while remaining surprisingly fully instrumental throughout all contributions from artists Haruomi Hosono, Shigeru Suzuki, and Tatsuro Yamashita. A true cult LP and an inspiration for a lot of so called "vaporware" music. LP includes insert." - Victory.

Title: Through The Looking Glass
Format: CD
Label: We Release.../Palto Flats
Country: USA
Price: $16.00
"Palto Flats and We Release Whatever The Fuck We Want Records present the highly-anticipated reissue of Japanese percussionist Midori Takadas sought after and timeless ambient/minimal album Through The Looking Glass, originally released in 1983 by RCA Japan. Considered a holy grail of Japanese music by many, Through The Looking Glass is Midori Takadas first solo endeavor, a captivating four-song suite capturing her deep quests into traditional African and Asian percussive language and exploring contemplative ambient sounds with an admirably precise use of marimba. The result is alternatively ethereal and vibrant, always precise and mesmerizing, and makes for an atmospheric masterpiece and an unparalleled sonic and spiritual experience. Midori Takada is a composer, multi-percussionist, and theater artist renowned in Japanese vanguard circles. Midori has released two solo albums: Through The Looking Glass and Tree Of Life (1999) and wrote music for Tadashi Suzukis theater plays. Her hypnotic, minimalist music is based in the concept of coherence between sound and the human body. She performs solo on marimba and other percussion instruments. She debuted on the scene of Berlin Philharmonic, performing with the RIAS Symphonie-Orchester Berlin just after graduating from Tokyo University of the Arts in 1974. She continued her career with solo concerts in Japan and abroad. In the 1980s, Midori began to explore the traditional music of Asia and Africa. Her fascination resulted in joint projects with Kakraba Lobi from Ghana, Lamine Konte from Senegal, Farafina Band from Burkina Faso, and Korean musicians: zither player Chi Seong-Ja, flute player Won-Il, and saxophone player Kang Tae-Hwan. She also led Mkwaju Ensembles innovative percussion project and still performs with free-jazz band Ton-Klami with Kang Tae-Hwan and jazz pianist Masahiko Satoh. Takadas compositions have a remarkable way of affecting the imagination. Her minimalist, contemplative music is filled with the concept of infinity and reminds us of a moon voyage, falling stars, a journey into the ocean, or a walk in the garden. The trans melodies, initially simple, begin to loop and splinter, their rhythm breaking and thickening, slowly drawing the listener into another reality. This fully licensed reissue comes with extensive liner notes. CD version is the first ever available CD version; Comes with an eight-page booklet and fold-out poster." - We Release/Palto Flats.
