Artist: HABIBIYYA, THE
Title: If Man But Knew+
Format: CDR
Label: Qasida
Country: Spain
Price: $16.50
"(Habibiyya were a ) buncha british rockers from the end of the 60s (some were in Mighty Baby) ... seems like they flipped out on sufic islam + cut a beautiful slice of eastern-influenced dronefloat for Island recs right at the start of the 70s ... well, i picked up the rec for 25p in a charity shop many moons ago, and its a real head-turner, lost classic, but not so many seem to know about it ... ANYWAYS, im only posting this because ive just found out that one of the guys in the band has made it available again on swish-looking CDR . I reckon a lot of you out there would really go for this, if you enjoy NNCK, jewelled antler, sunburned hand, sun city girls, hell even vibracathedral. Someone shd give this one the full reissue treatment some day, but until then, its nice that you can get yr hands on it if you want." - Neil Campbell. "Habibiyyas sole album stands as one of the earliest and most beautiful pieces of world music ever recorded in Britain. The musicians involved (including three members of UK underground legends Mighty Baby) had been profoundly affected, both musically and spiritually, by visiting Morocco in 1971, and became adherents of the Sufi faith. Upon their return to London they made If Man But Knew, featuring exotic instruments such as koto, shakuhachi and mandola alongside guitar, organ and drums, conjuring a hypnotic, otherworldly ambience in the process." Picked these up a year or two ago but were listing them for the first time.. Very nice full color printed artwork and CDRs, all signed by Ian Whiteman. Includes 3 unreleased tracks from the original recording session. Highly recommended!

Artist: DOYLE ELECTRO-ACOUSTIC ENSEMBLE, ARTHUR
Title: Live at Analog Shock Club
Format: VHS Video
Label: QBICO
Country: ITALY
Price: $24.00
"Arthur Doyle- tenor sax, voice, flute, recorder/Leslie Q- bass, guitar/Ed Wilcox- drums, percussion/Vinnie Paternostro- Roland 505/Tim Poland- Clavinova/Dave Cross- turntable, Ibanez DM 1100 sampler. Rec. at Analog Shock Club, Rochester, NY, Jan. 26, 2002. Incredible and not to be missed complete live set (some excerpts issued on Side B of the "Conspiracy Nation" LP), shot on two cameras and in the end mixed together to create a very psychedelic effect (along with others "effect" such as slow motion, distorted images, ect...). A rare chance to see such an amazing Ensemble live (which unfortunatly by now, have never played outside to US)and capture them in full glory !!! See Mr. Doyle blowing his down-and-dirty sax, "singing" other space "songs" , playing his flute.... or Mr. Wilcox furious drums playing... what a pleasure!!!" - QBICO. Numbered edition of 90.

Artist: ABE/SABU TOYOZUMI OVERHANG PARTY, KAORU
Title: Senzei
Format: Double LP
Label: QBICO
Country: Italy
Price: $40.00
Kaoru Abe: (alto sax). Sabu Toyozumi: (drums, percussion). Rec. February 25 and April 15 & 30, 1978 live at Gaya, Tokyo, Japan. Unrelease rec. available here for the 1st time after more then 25 years. "Long ago, when I started listening to free jazz records and was blowing on my alto, the abrasive sax sound of Kaoru Abe immediately fascinate me and he instantly became one of my hero... by then Id have NEVER imagined that one day Id have released an unissued record by him. This dream come true is now possible thanks to my dear friend Sabu, who discovered these very well recorded magical live sessions. Here, youd still hear Abe piercing sound (even if in this period he suffered terribly from physical and mental pain), few months before his tragic death for acute stomach rupture (official report, but his habit was known...). Unfortunately, he died too young, at 29 years old, on Sept. 9, 1978. His solo activity had been documented on at least more then 15 releases (between LP and CDs), but his collaborations had been less documented: three seminal releases in duo with guitarist Masayuki Takayanagi, another duo DLP with Sabu, a duo/trio from 1970/71, a duo LP with bassist Motoharu Yoshizawa and finally group playing with Derek Bailey and Milford Graves. So this new duo live sets are much more welcome. He was definitively one of the greatest improvisor from Japan and Sabu with his creative and powerful drumming, the ideal partner to let him freely express all his intense emotions. Raw energy, aggressive playing, heavy stuff." - QBICO.

Title: Qbibo U-Nite In Bruxelles II
Format: Double LP
Label: QBICO
Country: Italy
Price: $42.00
"Wild-style two LP set from Qbico documenting a night in Bruxelles that matched America firepower from the fingers of bassist/electronic improviser Alan Silva, drummer Chris Corsano and saxophonist Paul Flaherty with the massed ranks of the UKs Vibracathedral Orchestra and Finnish duo Lauhkeat Lampaat. The line-up breaks down into various individual cells with Alan Silva, Lauhkeat Lampaat and Vibracathedral Orchestra all contributing individual tracks before Flaherty and Corsano join the Lauhkeat Lampaat duo as part of a big-band Vibracathedral Orchestra blow-out. From a performance that took place on 8th April 2004. Comes in ridiculously inappropriate full-colour sleeve featuring the cast as space monkeys. Paul Flaherty image is especially accurate, while Lauhkeat Lampaat boast some wild ass. Both LPs pressed on colour, psychedelic vinyl." - QBICO.

"This is a music that i originally composed for a play called Alice in Nakedland. The play was some erotic expressionist nonsense, sort of like Alice in Wonderland and Dr. Caligaris Crime added together then divided by two. This healing session opens and closes with two funk/jazz tracks, rec. by Muruga in trio & 4et with Ken Kozara on muted trumpet and Richard Smith on bass; Belita Woods, from P-Funk, is added on the last track of the album, May The Funk Be With You. Out of Nothing is a very special duo piece rec. w/Prem Das: here Muruga uses a unique Nada drum, while Prem Das (long years of apprenticeship in Mexico with a Huichol shaman and was also a colleague of Timothy Leary & Ralph Metzner) uses a water drum for a quite hypnotic effect ! Artist: SMEGMA & PERRY ROBINSON
Title: Live At No Fun Fest
Format: LP
Label: QBICO
Country: Italy
Price: $23.50
Clear orange vinyl with white and red effects. Artwork by Ju Suk Reet Meate. "I used to buy and collect Smegma rockets when younger, so Im really happy to release an LP by this really far out band, especially since they played with my friend Perry, who is one of the most versatile musicians I had ever met! Smegma is a kind of cult mob in the US experimental underground, based in Portland, Oregon, they started back in the early 70s and got connections with the Los Angeles Free Music Society (Tom Recchion, Joe Potts, Le Forte Four, Airways, Doo-Dooettes, Ace Farren Ford and even The Residents); they also got an amazing label called Pigface... here they played some jazz for the year 3018." - Qbico.

Artist: TRULOFA
Title: Trulofa
Format: LP
Label: Qbico
Country: Italy
Price: $24.00
"I met these very young and promising fellas at the Qbico U-nite I did in Aarhus and to me this is the most exciting music coming out of Denmark right now, with Family Underground included, of course. Here they presented a very varied set, starting with some electronic trance inducing music by Marc Gade, to followed by an ad hoc baroque drunken marching band live from a Poland tour. Side B starts with another beautiful & melancholic all acoustic affair (mostly stringed) and ends with an improvised electro-acoustic number of magical and fragile beauty. Marc Gade one day was reading a Shirley Collins text where she explained that true love came from the root of an old Danish word: trulofa." - Qbico

Artist: GEERKEN, HARTMUT
Title: Amanita
Format: Double LP
Label: Qbico
Country: Italy
Price: $43.00
"Practically impossible to make it brief here, H. Geerken: author, composer, musician, film-maker, performer, actor, mycologist, archivist, stager of exhibitions, publisher of numerous authors from the circle of literary expressionism and Dada, lumberjack, bumble-bee keeper. During his six-year stay in Egypt in the 60s, he co-founded (together with Salah Ragab and Edu Vizvari) the Cairo Jazz Band as well as the Cairo Free Jazz Ensemble, played in various music groups: Embryo, a trio with John Tchicai and Don Moye (extensive tour of Africa) and also with the Art Ensemble of Chicago. He worked with Sunny Murray, Don Cherry, Okay Termiz, Peter Kowald, Takehisa Kosugi, Toshi Ichiyanagi, Michael Ranta, etc. Today Geerken possesses one of the most comprehensive Sun Ra archives. His book Omniverse Sun Ra (1994) , which contains the first all-embracing discography of the musician, has meanwhile grown to be a priceless cult book. Together with James Wolf from the Library Of Congress in Washington D.C., he is editor of the recently published collected poems and philosophical works of Sun Ra (The Immeasurable Equation, 2005). This is Geerkens first-ever solo release (a major event indeed!) and it was recorded under the influence of magic mushrooms (dried amanita muscaria). One of the instruments played here is Sun Ras Sun harp (a Bulgarian bandura), which Sun Ra gave him in 1971 in Egypt, where Hartmut invited the Arkestra to play. They didnt get any money to fly back to the States, so Hartmut kindly borrowed them some bread for the trip back... in exchange, Sun Ra gave him his Sun harp (which youd hear on several Saturn LPs and which was one of the few instruments that Sun Ra played besides keyboards) saying Ill buy it back from you one day... which evidently never happened. The other string instrument played here is a swarmandal, which was given to him in 1976 in New Delhi by the renowned Dhrupad singers: the Dagar brothers. Probably the wildest Qbico ever... alien sounds!" -Qbico

Artist: COTTON MUSEUM
Title: No Face In The Bog
Format: LP
Label: Qbico
Country: Italy
Price: $25.00
"Cows milk vinyl, artworks and music by Chris Pottinger, with insert. Side A originally released as a limited edition CD-R art set in 100 copies on Tasty Soil, Creature. B1 track is unreleased, recorded in 2007. B2 originally released in 2006 on Fag Tapes as a side of a tour cassette with Sick Llama. B3 was played as a loop for 8 months straight on a pirate radio station that broadcast out of the Cloud House on 107.9 FM. Far-out electronic music for the third millennium! The track on side A is side long and totally insane (dont know but I hear echoes of Kawabatas solo on Qbico #11, could be a new step/continuation?!), my amplifiers pointers never went so schizophrenic! Side B starts with a short electronic meditation thinned out by pure acid. The middle piece is long and it grows on you, deeper and deeper. This futuristic rocket ends with a mesmerizing short track that was broadcast as a loop on a pirate radio station for 8 consecutive months! All in tune: the cover, the vinyl color, the music AND the creatures! An exhibition (curated by Thurston Moore) of Chris Pottingers fine artwork was displayed at the latest No Fun Fest." -Qbico

"Recorded in NYC, 2000. Live At The Hint House might be considered a field recording in as much as it is a recording of an ambience or soundscape. Made on my first ever trip to mainland America to play music this is the 2nd set of that evening, the 1st set had been an acoustic one of songs and slide guitar. At the start of the 2nd set I quickly realized that my guitar was not working and rather than stop and attempt to find out what was wrong I decided to just continue and improvise with what was at hand on the table in front of me. A Casio SK1 sampler keyboard, a Yamaha SU10 sampling unit with some pre-recorded samples loaded, a mini disc with some tropical ambience rec. from Malaysia and a pitch shifter delay pedal. I was not very happy with what happened that night and when Matt Zwed gave me two CD-Rs the next day I dont remember giving much attention to the 2nd set. Five years on, coincidently to the day as I write this, I realized he had captured more than me trying to get through the piece. It was me, the people in the room, the dog that ran around barking, the traffic sounds coming through the door that was open right behind me and a whole host of magically transported tropical birds and insects that suddenly found themselves reciting whatever it was in the loft space on the edge of Harlem, competing or colluding with all of the above to produce a piece of urban exotica." -Mike Cooper

Artist: CHURINGA CANARIES
Title: Untitled
Format: LP
Label: Qbico
Country: Italy
Price: $24.00
Phil Legard, Alexander Neilson, Tirath Singh Nirmala, and Phil Todd. Recorded in Leeds, December 2005. Originally released as a CD-R limited to 100 copies. Collaborations can be a hell of a gamble. Fortunately, it seems that in the world of the underground music lover, collaborative ventures always seem to turn out to be synergetic exercises that yield amazing results. Churinga Canaries is such an endeavor: a one-off group effort improvised by four of the brightest lights in the UK underground music dog-and-pony show. A rundown of the participants should be more than enough to cause many of you to drool with excitement. Phil Legard (Xenis Emputae Travelling Band), Alex Neilson (Scatter, Richard Youngs collaborator, etc.), Tirath Singh Nirmala (formerly John Clyde-Evans of Hood) and Phil Todd (Ashtray Navigations) assembled in Leeds in chilly December 2005 to bang out some noise and melt the ice right out from under themselves with a warm bowl of sonic porridge. The results are two stunning long-form tracks of joyful jazz-inflected psych-noise in the vein of some of the wilder Ash Nav moments. Neilsons propulsive yet amazingly free drumming serves as the perfect background for the virtual maelstrom conjured up by the other three improvisers. About five minutes into the leading track, Under Heavy Rent, the sound is so dense and chaotic that its almost dizzying. The foursome manage to keep themselves and their sound from breaking apart into a million tiny pieces, but just barely. A Sovtek Swirl starts off subdued, with a recurring thematic element gluing the shards of our dumbstruck minds back together again. By the time the disc is finished however, youll be left panting in a useless heap on the floor. This is powerful stuff, not to be taken lightly. Dont say I didnt warn you!" - Byron Hayes (from July 2006 Review of the CD-R by Foxy Digitalis)

Artist: TOYOZUMI & MOTOTERU TAKAGI, SABU
Title: If Ocean Is Broken
Format: Double LP
Label: Qbico
Country: Italy
Price: $44.00
"Unreleased free jazz from Japan in its prime, recorded live in Tokyo in 1971. Mototeru Takagi already released two beautiful duo LPs back then with master Japanese drummers like Masahiko Togashi (Isolation) and Toshi Tsuchitori (Origination), so this last DLP is complete in a sense the set of duo recorded with the best, 1st generation, free music drummers from Japan. On the other side its complete also, the duo recorded by Sabu with the greatest reeds player from Japan (still of the 1st generation); being, his various duos with legendary Kaoru Abe, already documented on Qbico (Senzei) and elsewhere. About the music: raw and passionate = primitive beauty; both musicians are in top form and surely in their most creative period. Mr. Takagi plays tenor, soprano sax and bass clarinet, while Sabu is on drums and percussion. Original recordings were very well preserved (fortunately) and the pressing came out wonderful! Cover by qbico which Sabu can really dig, saying that En no Gyoja is deeply respected by him, he opened the way..." -Qbico

Artist: KAWABATA, MAKOTO
Title: Under Your Moonshine
Format: LP
Label: Qbico
Country: Italy
Price: $25.00
"Makoto Kawabata -- electric guitar (with no overdubbing) recorded around 2003/4. The last Makoto Kawabata release for Qbico! And strange enough, Makoto told me that this was his last solo guitar recording with no overdubs. He gave to me this special solo a while ago, maybe 2003/4. I waited for the right moment to release it, just before the closure of Qbico, it all started with him." -Qbico

Title: Love, Peace & Poetry - Turkish Psychedelic Music
Format: LP
Label: QDK Media
Country: Germany
Price: $17.00
"This is the ninth volume in the impressive Love, Peace & Poetry compilation series, following America, Latin America, Asia, UK, Japan, Brazil, Mexico and Africa. In Turkey, as the 1950s became the 1960s, just as in cities and towns across Britain and America, countless musical groups began to spring up as young people felt the pull of a growing youth movement. The music that would come from Turkey would blend European and Asian influences unique to that country and essential to the cultural synthesis of Turkish folk and Western rock music that emerged in 1967-1968. The great Delta blues players like Robert Johnson created music with one acoustic guitar in much the same way that traditional türkü arrangements were played originally on one saz (traditional Turkish instrument). If you consider the ways in which classic Delta blues songs were later given electric rock arrangements by musicians like John Mayall ,Eric Clapton ,The Rolling Stones and others you will have a fuller understanding of the Turkish rock/pop music of this era. Artists featured include: Mo?ollar (described as "Anadolu pop" or "Anatolian pop" -- the essence of the ancient and mystical soul of Turkish folk music; known as the "Turkish Pink Floyd"); Selda (politically-themed music, a transformation of traditional Turkish folk music and poetry into more contemporary rock-based music similar to the transformation of traditional folk-blues in the West); Özdemir Erdo?an (well-known jazz guitarist, vocalist and arranger; his track was originally a well-known türkü by Asik Veysel , one of the most revered Turkish folk poets); Erkin Koray (the most psychedelic Turkish rocker ever, made his best recordings between 1970 and 1974 -- the song here was recorded in 1971 with his band, Erkin Koray Supergroup ). Edip Akbayram (a türkü arranger and singer -- one of the last examples of the best Turkish rock music of the 1960s-1970s, as there was a definite shift away from those traditions after the beginning of the 1980s). Cem Karaca (another important rock singer known for his political stance); Üç Hürel (Turkish rock group formed in 1970 by three brothers; unique for designing their own instruments: drums created from traditional Turkish percussion instruments, a double-necked stringed creation that had an electric saz on one half and an electric guitar on the other); Bülent Ortaçgil (songwriter and singer who released his debut LP in1974, an album which has become a Turkish pop classic recently reissued on CD; Ortaçgil is unique because of the absence of Eastern influences in his music, sounding more Western as a result). As the smoke from the hookah rises around you and the intricate patterns in the finely-woven carpet open upon new worlds of meaning, breathe in the music deeply and enjoy." - QDK. CD also available.

Title: Love, Peace & Poetry - Chilean Psychedelic Music
Format: LP
Label: QDK Media
Country: Germany
Price: $17.00
"LP glossy gatefold heavy sleeve; 180 gram pressing; transparent red vinyl, 62 minutes. The Love, Peace & Poetry series from QDK continues in Chile, with 17 tracks culled from some of the lost treasures of the psychedelic music scene of the 7-year period between 1967-1973. In 1973, the Chilean dictatorship banned most rock bands and most musicians had to stop or leave the country, or take it underground. The ban extended to the retroactive destruction of many master tapes for many of the albums included here, which only just stopped as recently as the 1980s. Kissing Spell represents with "Yellow Moon" taken from their 1970 album Los Pajaros, as well as Embrujo who released their self-titled LP in 1971. Los Jaivas debut LP was pressed privately in 1971 in a small edition of 500 copies, making this track extra-rare. Los Vidrios Quebrados were one of the real South American psychedelic classics -- their Byrds-like jangle-pop coming through clearly on their track. Aguaturbia were pioneers of psychedelic rock in Latin America, who also generated considerable controversy over their album covers. Los Blops released three now very rare and very sought-after LPs between 1970 and 1973, and their sound was focused on their guitarists electric 12-string guitar (an unusual instrument in Chile at the time). Sacros were among the first electric folk-rock bands to perform during Catholic mass -- their recording was almost destroyed by the military and only a handful of copies survived. Los Macs 1967 masterwork, Kaleidoscope Men, is rightfully considered by many collectors to be one of the finest examples of 60s psychedelia from South America and original copies are impossibly rare. Los Beat 4 was one of the most successful groups of the national scene in the mid-60s and both of their rare LPs are represented here. Tumulto was respected for being non-commercial, and their track is taken from their rare debut album. Escombros released their sole LP in 1970 and are a gem in the psychedelic progressive folk style. Congregación released their sole LP on the IRT label in 1972, and El Congressos sound is the result of a unique blend of contemporary elements and Andean roots. Chilean psychedelic music was produced during a time of great cultural change and social turmoil and is exceedingly rare and very special. "-QDK Media
