Artist: A HANDFUL OF DUST
Title: For Patti Smith
Format: CD
Label: Freewaysound
Country: New Zealand
Price: $16.00
"A Handful of Dust are a duo [and occasionally a trio] of New Zealand improvising noise artists. In 1993 they fired an early blast in the so-called free noise barrage heard round the world, with the recording of the no-fingers-on-the-strings opus Concord. 24 October 1999 found them playing live at the Puntersí Club, Melbourne, Australia, recorded by Marco Fusinato and mixed live by Greg Wadley. The resulting two long tracks of beautiful sonic violence were dedicated to the Queen of post-jazz rock improv Rimbaudian sense-derangement herself, and titled I Am Gods Finger and [From a Soundtrack to] Babelfield. They feature Bruce Russell and Alastair Galbraith performing a mix of guitar, violin, long wires and electronics. No stone is left unrotated, no rock left un-detourned in this top-of-their-game sizzling sound-smash. This tag-team of post-everything sound improvisers cant be easily beaten at the spontaneous improvisation of soundworlds which leave the senses literally grasping at straws." - Freewaysound.

Title: From a Soundtrack to the Anabase of St-John Perse
Format: Cass
Label: Imminent Frequencies
Country: USA
Price: $6.50
"A Handful of Dust is the duo of New Zealand noisemakers Bruce Russell (The Dead C) and Alastair Galbraith. Incorporating elements of drone, spoken word, minimalism, improvisation and utilizing everything from violin to toy telephone, The Dust crafts a genuinely unique style of free-form music. “From A Soundtrack To The Anabase Of St-John Perse” a tape originally released via Russell’s own Corpus Hermeticum imprint nearly two decades ago finds the duo under the influence of the 1924 poem of the same name and at the height of their creative experimentation." - Imminent Frequencies.

Title: Panegyric
Format: CDR
Label: Nextbestway
Country: New Zealand
Price: $14.00
"An onslaught of extended improvised noise workouts: senseless, messy, directionless and ear-wracking.... for improvisation to be a risk the performers need to be striving for a vision, need to be striving to take us somewhere. On these recordings however it doesnt sound like any striving is going on at all. This sort of self-indulgent,directionless improvisation irritates me not for its rejection of structural convention,or its grating timbre, but because of the self-satisfied absence of ambition it embodies.  I cannot help but feel swindled - I can hear no passion, no giving, no magic, no sharing, no dynamics, no vulnerability. Just the air-tight armour of arrogance. Im sure the band members are marvellous people personally: but musically this is obnoxious and not in a good way" - Henry Lauer/ Heathen Harvest. Alastair Galbraith: glass harmonica, violin; Bruce Russell: clavioline, guitar. Recorded live at Lines Of Flight 2006.

Title: Now Gods, Stand Up For Bastards & The Philosophick Mercury
Format: Double CD
Label: No Fun
Country: USA
Price: $16.00
"Now Gods, Stand Up For Bastards/The Philosophik Mercury is a double-disc re-issue of two limited and long out-of-print works by this obscure enigma. Plunging straight into the chasm of ultra-minimalist abrasion and chaotic improv, these two records stand as unrelenting and engrossing epics of guitar feedback, disintegrating electronic sound, string-shredding violin abuse, and other facets of impassioned iconoclasm. Recommended for lovers of AMM, Henry Flynt, and Hijokaidan. A Handful of Dust are a group consisting of a core duo of Bruce Russell (The Dead C) and Alastair Galbraith. Formed in Dunedin, New Zealand in 1990." -No Fun
