"Mike Sniper never meant to be one of Brooklyns ‘most mysterious musicians. Things just ended up that way, as the singer/multi-instrumentalist released a steady stream of limited singles and EPs on such reputable indie labels as Sacred Bones, HoZac and Woodsist. Not to mentions Snipers own Captured Tracks imprint—a carefully-curated roster thats grown as quickly as Blank Dogs itself, thanks to such buzz-stirring releases as Dum Dum Girls debut EP and recent records by Beach Fossils, Wild Nothing and Minks. “The anonymous thing happened in the very beginning because I didnt even have a backing band to play shows with,” explains Sniper. “It led to some ridiculous rumors—that I wear a mask onstage, that Im Stephen Malkmus…funny stuff.” Another common misconception about Blank Dogs is that Sniper wanted his early recordings—starting with the speaker-crawling cold sweat cuts of 2007s Diana the Herald EP—to sound like a lo-fi gathering of queasy vocals, bruised beats and Chinese water torture chords. The truth is much simpler than that: Blank Dogs murkier mixes were purely a matter of having limited means. Things started to change around his On Two Sides (Troubleman, 2008) album, however, as rare slabs of Blank Dogs vinyl landed on the eBay circuit and influential blogs (The FADER, 20jazzfunkgreats) feverishly posted brand new MP3s. Between that cult following and the continued success of Captured Tracks, Sniper was finally able to buy better equipment and develop his sound into an expansive mix of clear (The Cure, Joy Division) and cryptic (The Go-Betweens, Neil Young) influences—a decidedly Blank Dogs direction that touches upon everything from the spare, sparkling synths of Frances cold-wave movement to the jangly guitars of classic indie rock. All of this progress was made with one particular record in mind: this falls Land and Fixed LP, a tight 12-song effort that took about a year and 13 scrapped tracks (some of which ended up on the Phrases EP) to complete. The result isnt just a clearer recording; its like going from stolen cable on a 15-inch set to a wall-swallowing HDTV. A headphone listen, in other words—literally mixed on the subway to enhance widescreen details like the heat-seeking hooks of “Blurred Tonight,” the elegantly-layered arrangements of “Out the Door,” and the moonlit synth melodies of “Elevens.” As it turns out, the next phase of Blank Dogs is an instrumental Woodsist record in the vein of “Elevens.” Sniper says hes “pretty psyched for it,” a dance 12-inch for Italians Do It Better and sessions with Blank Dogs live trio, which is rounded out by Craig Mileski and Pamela Garavano-Coolbaugh. “Were definitely more of a "band" now,” insists Sniper, although one thing hasnt changed: he still isnt Stephen Malkmus. "...Occasionally calling in collaborators from the likes of Crystal Stilts, Vivian Girls and Times New Viking, Phrases, Snipers latest EP in a long succession of vinyl-only releases, sees him going it alone for the most part. Indeed, its hard to envisage anyone else being allowed sufficient mindspace to create alongside Sniper, such is the vast propensity of ideas that fill the four tracks here. While the opening electro-tinged robotics of Heat And Depression resembles a Crystal Castles outtake, Sniper mumbling "Can you see yourself?" with surreptitious repetition over a distorted funky bassline, its on Phrases other three tracks that his more obscure influences start to take hold. Blurred Tonight takes The Cramps danse macabre schtick through the same backdoor as The Horrors managed so successfully last year, except with even more menacing vocal assertions courtesy of that man Sniper. His voice then gets the heavily reverbed treatment on Racing Backwards, a Cure-inspired number that sees the opulent Sniper make the offer "stay to the end" which becomes increasingly difficult to refuse as verse usurps chorus. Despite Blank Dogs NYC dancefloor tendencies, theres something inadvertently English about these compositions, suitably realised in the closing End Of Summer which takes Depeche Modes early Roland Jupiter-led blueprint before mashing it into a collage of post-punk ambience, beats and all..." - from Drowned In Sound. "BlankDogs are actually singular: Its the insanely prolific one-man Brooklyn-based band of Mr. Blank Dog. We dont know too much about the biography of the guy behind the bedroom new-wave pop/punk and hes usually covering his face with masks or bedspreads, but thats fine. The aura of anonymity allows you to focus on the sounds -- and, really, he might be releasing a ton of things, but theres definitely a higher jam to crap ratio. Its like Joy Division vocal lines with the Cures synth and guitar melodies filtered through ancient submerged keyboards and eroded recording equipment. And that voice? All the feedback in the world cant hide his knack for melody. Blank Dogs have been making plenty of rumbles in the noisier and more secretive outposts of the underground (half his discographys sold out), but Troubleman Unlimiteds just repressed his very recommended full-length On Two Sides (on yellow vinyl in an edition of 500) and In The Reds releasing a 20-song double LP (or single CD) Under And Under in January. Its all new material. Hes also playing his first shows this month in NYC, so if you want to take a peek, you can. All this to say: Seems like BlankDogs is on his way out of the basement."-stereogum.

Title: Diana (The Herald)
Format: LP
Label: Sacred Bones
Country: USA
Price: $13.00
"For the quickly ascending career of the BLANK DOGS, this 12-inch marks another ringer, and already their fourth release of 2007, clearly showing an impeccable work ethic with no signs of stopping. Each record sounding more unique and far out than the last, this brand new 12-inch EP on Sacred Bones shows the Blank Dogs evolving into a full-on goth-gone wrong killing machine, yet they dont need to get nasty. The effects the vocals reverberate through will cause instant nausea when exposed to the elderly and the weak, yet underneath lie those keenly disguised pop hooks that stick with you long after the record stops. If Death Pop was ever really a term, the Blank Dogs now own it, yet their wrong wave wanderings can entertain fringe psych-heads just the same, hence their growing appeal across genre boundaries."-Victim Of Time. Title: The Doorbell Fire
Format: 7"
Label: Sweet Rot

Price: $5.00
"One of the most exciting things when listening to Blank Dogs records has been trying to dissect the alchemy of his recording process. How did he make that guitar/synth sound like that? And was it on purpose or something he just stumbled on to? The mysteries behind these questions (and of course the increasingly annoying debate of the identity of the suspects involved...I mean, it really doesnt matter folks. Cant you just enjoy something?) make for intense listening experiences...a Blank Dogs record is something I really just cant have playing in the background while I do other things. They demand attention, or perhaps just have a certain magic that sucks you into their world. They manage to be quite personal sounding and keep you at an arms distance as well. "Outside Alarmer" has already been picked as one of Mr.BDs choicest cuts by many and I cant argue with facts. Its synth flares lend a nearly pretty quality to a tune that would at first seem almost creepy. "It Was" treks thorugh the desert on a winding minimal-synth path. "Doorbell Fire" reminds me of The Cure for no apparent reason. Somewhat fragile and surprisingly quite stirring and evocative music from a "band" that I hope just isnt toying with my emotions. Theres a distinct odor of Eighties nostalgia surrounding this record in my mind as well, so much so that I envisioned them as the soundtrack for some outre John Hughes teen-flick on a particularly late and chemically enhanced evening. My personal fave of the Blank Dogs records so far." - Terminal Boredom (Rich Kroneiss).

Title: On Two Sides
Format: LP
Label: Troubleman Unlimited

"BLANK DOGS proposition does also contain a great deal of the otherworldly, I think you shall find the way in which they resonate uncertain and hazy like transmissions coming from the other side most appealing, like reliable messengers delivering a lost love letter across impossible distances with a fierce passion which reminds me of that most excellent Sir John Maus. Blank Dogs seem to have studied in the cadaverous school of German minimalism where thaumaturgs such as Grauzone excelled, but covered some of the piercing angles with the flesh and blood of the new wave that these Islands did bear, particularly Joy Division and even Young Marble Giants at certain moments of trembling melodic beauty. All laced with that distorted barbed wire one finds in so many promising new acts from the other side of the pond. Formidable material, I am sure you will agree, do purchase their album On Two Sides when it is made available and you shant be disappointed."-20 Jazz Funk Greats
