"Primary Information is happy to announce the release of the first ever DISBAND CD. Compiled from over three years of performance around New York from 1979 and 1982, the CD features 21 songs. While the DISBAND collective featured many members in its brief lifetime, the CD captures the group as Ilona Granet, Donna Henes, Barbara Kruger (briefly), Ingrid Sischy, Diane Torr, and Martha Wilson. Wilson, inspired by the no-wave scene and club culture around her, in particular the Y-Pants, Theoretical Girls, Bush Tetras, and James White and the Blacks, started DISBAND in 1978. As Martha Wilson herself explained: ⿿Bands played at the Mudd Club, Tr3, AREA, CBGBs. But they all knew how to play instruments and I didnt, so I called up artist girlfriends who were long on concept and short on skills, and DISBAND, the all-girl band of artists who couldnt play any instruments, was born.⿝ While this sounds like the equation for badly played instruments and screechy vocals that became a hallmark of the late-70s New York music scene, DISBAND left the instruments behind and focused their efforts on crafting melodic all-vocal pop songs that were both sharp-tongued and tongue-in-cheek. Taking on the role of both band and artist collective, they blurred the line between performance art and live music. DISBANDs lyrics contributed to ongoing discussions on the art and social issues of their time yet they remain relevant. Sexual identity, gender inequality, cold war politics, and the daily struggles of artists and art workers all play a role in the bands lyrics. Mirroring the chaos and temporarity of that time, the band split up in 1982 having never produced a record. This is the first comprehensive look at their all-too brief career." - Primary Information
