Artist: ENSEMBLE ECONOMIQUE
Title: Standing Still, Facing Forward
Format: LP
Label: Amish
Country: USA
Price: $20.00
"Brian Pyle is Ensemble Economique. This is the first LP release from Ensemble Economique. Digitalis issued the At the Foot of Nameless Roads CD in 2008. Both recordings are important primers to Pyles nascent invocations of Holger Czukays Cannaxis (on No GPS) and Karlheinz Stockhausens Kontake (on At the Foot). With Standing Still, Facing Forward Ensemble Economique provides the most mature realization of Pyles compositional process, which utilizes found sounds, field recordings, and musical performance that he later meticulously edits, layers, and loops in the studio. The effects of these processes are dramatic, cinematic and conceptually rigorous and this recording evidences Pyle as an important new composer emerging out of the long and storied tradition of West Coast experimentalism. Utilizing a delicate combination of the homespun improvisation of his other project, Starving Weirdos (whose work sounds like an American echo of AMM) with his own unique variation on the European avant-garde in Ensemble Economique, Pyles practice involves a dense approach to composition akin to assemblage. But unlike electronic and laptop composition, Pyles studio work aims to re-establish an organicism associated with live (or, in the case of the field recordings, lived) performance that pushes the studio out into nature and nature into the studio. In short, the Northern Californian landscape plays an integral part in Ensemble Economiques soundscapes, and this record captures much of the atmosphere of Pyles home terrain." LP comes wrapped in a letter-pressed band and contains a 16-page art book." -Amish.

Title: Fever Logic
Format: LP
Label: Not Not Fun
Country: USA
Price: $15.00
"ENSEMBLE ECONOMIQUE has emerged as an unusually globe-trotting creative valve for Arcata, CA, beachcomber BRIAN PYLE. The last year alone has seen him backpacking through Scandinavia, Europe and Russia-twice. Maybe his spirits too absorbent, cause hes brought back some deeply heavier moods and ancient world weariness since his last outing on Not Not Fun, 2010s demonic tribal monsoon Psychical. Recent splits with similarly instinctual psychedelic unclassifiables like Lee Noble and Heroin in Tahiti have hinted at his bracing off-roader headspace, but he bares all on Fever Logic, six songs smeared across 40 minutes. Pyle positions each composition as a slow-motion funereal landslide; grey clay electronics losing form, echoes of processed guitar, depressive synth mist, all drizzling down over his wailing prisoners prayer vocals. A few flirt with slightly more overt goth-gaze signifiers ("Walking into the Light," "We Come Spinning Out of Control"), but the rest run closer to some kind of miasmic electronic abstraction mode, merging submerged mumbling and isolationist field recordings with intensely personal melodies and spacious cathedrals of ritual guitar. As with so many of Pyles past steps, its all-consuming and all out on its own (the only guest appearance is his brother, JON, echo-plexing some occult percussion to the opening track). Strictly limited to 450 copies." - Not Not Fun.

Title: Live In London
Format: Cass
Label: Not Not Fun
Country: USA
Price: $7.00
"BRIAN PYLEs work under the ENSEMBLE ECONOMIQUE banner has been undergoing heavy shift lately, prompted by both creative restlessness as well as inner life upheavals. Hes quested out on 2 lone wolf UK/Euro tours in the past half-year alone, plus dropped an ace LP on the Dekorder label of ominous soundtrack menace. When rapid transformation takes hold, its best to just roll tape and make sense of it later. Thus, in anticipation of his forthcoming 2012 NNF full-length, we present EE: Live In London, an impressively recorded 37-minute performance at The Vortex in August of last year, comprised of all new material. Primitive drum machine rhythms stutter in primal-industrial patterns, cloaked in disquieting drones and oblique tape samples (police sirens, jungle bird calls, Sinead OConnor vocal raptures), accompanied by pained crooning, ragged squalls of electric guitar, and minor-key synth depressions. More song-based than his voodoo hallucination breakthrough, 2010s Psychical, but no less unsettling, the new Economique approach has shades of Eyeless In Gazas eerie, fatalist drift but the thrust is some sort of goth-psych/beat music hybrid that were not aware even really exists yet. A captivating document of an artist at the crossroads. White, imprinted tapes with high-art jazz-splatter J-cards designed by AMANDA BROWN. Edition of 150." -Not Not Fun.

Title: Psychical
Format: LP
Label: Not Not Fun
Country: USA
Price: $15.00
"Brian Pyle is well-known for his enterprising shamanism as one half of Nor Cal improv gurus Starving Weirdos but when off-roading in his Ensemble Economique buggy he seems to stumble onto even weirder psychogenic artifacts. Psychical is Pyles freshest full-length and easily his most drugged and dense. Thick, humid banks of synth-fog descend over looped cult hand-drum patterns, strangely panned waves of brainwash tones, and snippets of third world voices mumbling about blood and marijuana. As the name half-jokingly implies, EE is 100% Pyles creation instrument-wise, although his wife Phoenix does intone some possessed doom poetry over the crushing war drums of Forever Eyes and Tom Carter (of Charalambides) cameos with some searing white light guitar shrapnel on the creep-out raga of Real Things. All the pieces dissolve into one another, giving Psychical a dark-trip soundtrack mood, an upriver lost soul convoy into hostile off-radar territories, a thousand spectral voices misting down like blackening monsoon clouds. A total haunter, and an LP weve been spinning many midnights around NNF HQ. Black vinyl LPs in jackets with occult VHS artwork by Manda Beth Brown. Edition of 470." -Not Not Fun

Title: The Vastness Is Bearable Only Through Love
Format: LP
Label: Shelter Press
Country: France
Price: $22.00
"New LP from Ensemble Economique aka Brian Pyle, one-half of Humboldt avant-abstractionists Starving Weirdos and RV Paintings. "Weve long loved the SWs sprawling rhythmic dronescapery, and on his own, Pyle explores similar sonic territory, but Pyles approach sans partners seems to be more dense and dark, caustic and abrasive, the rhythmic element balancing the atmospheric elements, like here on the title-track, which spreads out over all of the first side. A thick, swirling low-end thrum oozes and undulates, its a hazy blurred rumble, over which Pyle layers heaving shards of crunch, thick throbs, deep bell-like tones, rhythmic machine gun stutters, all of which pile up and overlap, creating a soft cacophony of clatter and crunch, chug and churn, a strangely haunting, and sorta noisy, almost industrial creepscape, that sounds like some weird hybrid of Wolf Eyes, Philip Jeck and Umberto, performed by some strange robotic minimalist chamber ensemble. A swirling, heady, and darkly psychedelic barrage of loops and rhythms, layers and textures, mesmerizing and intense. The flipside is another permutation of Pyles abstract, beat-laden drones, another thick, swirling morass of sitar-like buzz and sci-fi synth squelch, this time the beats buried, little flurries of stutter and shuffle, squalls of glitchy tangle, more coloring the proceedings than driving them. The last track is a tense, soundtrack-y stretch of layered buzz and haunting melody -- a sprawl of pulsing high-end over deep, ominous rumbles, like the music from the scariest moment in some lost Italian giallo, stretched out into minutes instead of seconds, all tension, no release, brooding and intense, haunting and mesmerizing, fantastic stuff." -Aquarius Records.
