Artist: GARBUS, RUTH
Title: Rendezvous with Rama
Format: LP
Label: Feeding Tube
Country: USA
Price: $20.00
"Ruth Garbus, of Brattleboro VT, is a force of nature in the Upper Valley. Her visual art and musical work are always imbued with the magic of a crisp fall evening, suggesting the shifting mystery of the seasons, rooted in the granite of the White Mountains. Rendezvous with Rama was originally issued on CD (Autumn Records) in 2010, around the same time she was working in the quartet Happy Birthday. This followed her work with the Feathers Family collective, who were responsible for some of the first progressive-folk-smoke to drift from Southern Vermont. But this here is what she sounded like solo back in those days, and its great. These days, Ruths voice and topics feel darker and maybe richer somehow, but the vibe here is as light as a seagull who got tricked into following the Connecticut River up from the Long Island Sound. Backing herself with circular acoustic patterns, her voice recalls the sweet charm of Sandy Denny when she was with the Strawbs, or the way Joni Mitchell covered Leonard Cohens “Urge for Going,” in 72. Rendezvous with Rama is a classic piece of volk vinyl, and you will be damn pleased to have it in your collection." - Byron Coley, 2015.

Title: Hello Everybody
Format: 7"
Label: OSR
Country: USA
Price: $7.00
"4 new tracks from Ruth , as we made good on a proposal by veteran percussionist Larry McDonald (known for his work w/ Bob Marley , Gil Scott-Heron , Lee "Scratch" Perry , Count Ossie , Hartley C. White , & the list goes on ...) to do a session of her music with his backing . I could go on but better to sprinkle the blah-blah-blah over yr shoulder like the superstitious salt it is & listen for the past present and future of meticulous intuitive lyric songwriting at its best . & as usual Ruth is joined here by co-vocalist Julia Tadlock who adds depth to the 3D . expect more soon : this is just a handful , spindrift from a broader clutch of new mind-shoes Ruth has been cobbling up there in Brattleboro VT " - OSR.

Title: Joule EP
Format: 7"
Label: OSR Tapes
Country: USA
Price: $5.00
“Four point five songs of a warm, humble talent from Ruth Garbus (ex-Happy Birthday, responsible for a top five Sub Pop release before dipping out, and sister of the one they call tUnE-yArDs), pursuing a lithe, late spring wildflower folk-pop, built around words that feel like poetry and songs that drape over you like fresh warm sheets on a bed. Garbus paints these songs as moving targets, each track sounding slightly different from the last in a way that pulls the listener off their guard. “I Took A Walk,” recorded live, possesses a certain Lois Maffeo ca. Courtney Love quality, with this one lyric “committing a crime is my water to wine” that keeps rattling around in my head. Theres a really strong sense of arrangements here which fills “Kisserine Chalk” with woodsy mystery and whistling chorus, and elsewhere peels back to a late Brill Building sensibility, that year or two before songwriting saw its way out and the 60s took over; its not hard to think of a Harpers Bizarre or Spanky And Our Gang getting hold of “Opal Elections” and adding strings or whatnot, but what Garbus leaves us with here is a new, small world to explore independent of pre-conceived notions, asking the listener to trust her. Listener, you should (and knock the speed down to 33rpm after the last labeled song for a snippet worth hearing at a less frantic pace).” - Still Single.
