Title: Redbirds At Folk City
Format: LP
Label: Feeding Tube
Country: USA
Price: $16.00
"Heres an expanded vinylization of a boss live show from Snock and his Vermont roustabouts, recorded at Folk City on July 17, 1976. Most of it was first issued back in 88, as side two of the Land of Lo Fi/Redbirds cassette on Bellemeade Phonics. But some new masters showed up subsequently, so theres an extra song and a half available for your listening pleasure. And pure pleasure is what it is. I always believed I had seen Hurley play somewhere in NYC before this. I thought maybe it was during the Unholy Modal Rounders stint at Broadway Charlys, but Woodbill has continuously disabused me of this notion over the years. By his count, there were zero Manhattan Hurley shows until after the release of the acclaimed Have Moicy! album in 1976. And he oughta know. Consequently, this was probably the first time Hurley brought his band out of the hills. Guitar, bass, drums, piano and trumpet, all of them beautifully in sync and swinging like the rural hippie boogie band they were -- tested by long nights in halls filled with rowdy snowmobilers and the women who love them. Hurley & the Redbirds were more than ready to bowl over the city slickers who filled Folk City this hot mid-summer evening. Snocks voice is limber and strong, flipping easily into falsetto and yodels, and the music is faultless. Something like the Platonic ideal of what bar rock can be. They only do one tune from Have Moicy!, but nobody could have minded. The music rolls out like the sweetest-ever guzzle of maple syrup laced with Mello Corn Whiskey. So loaded, so powerful, youre likely to shit the bed if you listen lying down. So hop right up, and let the music shuffle your feet around for you. Youll be glad you did. Besides the boss sounds, this issue includes liner notes by Snock recalling the scene around Fairfield Vermont back in the summer of 75. Its a very nice read. Count yourself lucky. Dont delay." --Byron Coley, 2017. Edition of 2000.

Title: First Songs
Format: LP
Label: Folkways
Country: USA
Price: $18.00
"MICHAEL HURLEY is one of the most beloved cult figures of the Greenwich Village folk scene and his songs have been recorded by everyone from the Holy Modal Rounders and the Youngbloods, to Vetiver and Cat Power. First Songs, recorded in 1964 when Hurley was only 22 years old, shows that his charming, bumming, hippie, wino persona was fully formed at an early age. The album features the first recorded versions of such Snock classics as "The Werewolf Song" and "Captain Kidd." Reissued on LP for the first time ever, with deluxe packaging including faithful reproductions of the original jacket and insert." -Folkways

Title: Ancetral Swamp
Format: LP
Label: Gnomonsong
Country: USA
Price: $20.00
2016 repress. "Ancestral Swamp is the 20th full-length album by legendary rambler, cartoonist, outsider folk singer, and guitarist Michael Hurley. It arrives just in the nick of time for the rabid Snockophile. A batch of new vittles and encores of some of his classic tunes, Ancestral Swamp bubbles with laid-back ease and tre-molodic goodness. Most songs have the simplest of arrangements: Hurley singing solo, accompanied by his guitar, Wurlizter organ, or fiddle. Tara Jane ONeil helps lend a nice touch to El Dorado, and Snock calls upon frequent past accomplices Dave Reisch and Louie Longmeyer for their graceful touch on sleepy winners like New River Blues and Gamblin Charlie. As with all Hurleys albums, once one sets the needle down, one is put in a certain peace and place. His voice and songs are unique, shuffling with characters and visions clear and wild. With Ancestral Swamp, it seems Snock has left his front door open a bit wider than usual. If you lean in close, you can inhale a little of the vapor rising off the water, and enjoy a tale or two." - Gnomonsong.

Title: Ida Con Snock
Format: LP
Label: Gnomonsong
Country: USA
Price: $16.00
"Michael Hurley is one of the last remaining ramblin American folk troubadours. Hobo-ing around the country, making music since the days Bob Dylan first set foot in New York Citys Gaslight club, Hurley recorded his first album for Moses Ashs legendary Folkways label in 1964 and continued to release albums for both Warner Brothers and Rounder. His mid-70s Have Moicy album was among the top ten for the decade selected by Rolling Stone magazine. While many of his contemporaries are long past their prime (or deceased), Hurleys muse is still intact. Hurleys songwriting talent hasnt gone unnoticed by a new generation of musicians. In recent years, he was invited to tour with alt-country heroes Son Volt and Lucinda Williams. Hes also shared bills with Smog and Palace Brothers, played with the Giant Sand rhythm section, and has of course appeared with (and been covered by) Vetiver and appeared on their records. His songs have also been covered by indie stars Cat Power and Yo La Tengo, among others. So, the matter at hand, a new album of recordings sung and played by Hurley, backed by Ida, appropriately titled Ida Con Snock: Snock himself marvels at this 21st studio album, recorded at Levon Helms studio in Woodstock, NY. Idas less-is-more finesse shines on these rich recordings, melding perfectly with Hurleys playing and singing. Many of these songs are already well familiar to Hurleys devotees. There are seven originals and five loving covers of 50s rock n roll, C&W, and vintage folk, each tune capturing Hurley and band at peak performance levels." -Gnomonsong

Title: Have Moicy!
Format: LP
Label: Light In The Attic
Country: USA
Price: $20.00
"Tracing the lineage and citing the fore-bearers of the New Weird America, one cant help but mention the music of bizarre folk singer/guitarist/artist Michael Hurley. If you havent been following his career since the 1970s (when he was collaborating with the likes of the Holy Modal Rounders and Jesse Colin Young) then you probably discovered him in the past couple of years via Devendra Banharts & Andy Cabics label Gnomonsong, who have released Hurleys recent recordings. Hurleys debut album, First Songs, was recorded for Folkways Records in 1965 on the same reel-to-reel machine that taped Lead Bellys Last Sessions. He was discovered by blues and jazz historian Frederick Ramsey III, and subsequently championed by boyhood friend Jesse Colin Young, who released Hurleys next two albums on The Youngbloods Warner Brothers imprint, Raccoon. Hows that for cred? In the 1970s, Hurley made three albums for Rounder Records; Have Moicy!, Robert Christgau of The Village Voice called The greatest folk album of the rock era. First ever reissue on vinyl; re-mastered; 180 gram LP housed in Stoughton tip-on old school type jacket including faithfully reproduced original artwork by Michael Hurley." -Light In The Attic

Title: The Words to the Songs of Michael Hurley
Format: Book
Label: Loie De Cravan
Country: Canada
Price: $16.00
"American folk legend Michael Hurley is considered a master of songcraft by fellow musicians, and it is easy to see why. His songs can be highly eccentric, populated by werewolves, sign-painters, tea and whiskey-drinkers, pork chops and hot dogs, wild geese, intoxicated lovers, and blue navigators, but above all, they always manage to be moving and funny. The perfection of his peculiar, personal, and utterly unique oeuvre is even more apparent on paper and in print. The Words To The Songs Of Michael Hurley presents lyrics to 19 of his songs and marks the first time Hurleys lyrics have been published in book form. It includes a foreword by the music critic Byron Coley and a French version by Marie Frankland, winner of the 2007 John-Glassco Prize for translation. All songs are calligraphed by the author. Michael Hurley (aka Doc Snock), is an American songwriter, reputedly born in 1941, whose songs have been seeping into the folk unconscious for almost 50 years now (including covers by Cat Power, Yo La Tengo, Espers and others). Hurleys melodies and lyrics take flight into a world of plenty, inspiring wonder and humor, sin and slowness, laziness and longing. His music is often coined as "outsider folk." His hobo lifestyle indeed could be looked upon as eccentric, but it might be better to regard him as one of the last insiders keeping alive the traditions of the folk troubadour. Hobo-ing around the country, making music since the days Bob Dylan first set foot in NYCs Gaslight club, Hurley recorded his first album for the legendary Folkways label in 1964 and continued to release albums for Warner Brothers, Rounder or Devendra Banharts Gnomonsong label. His mid-70s Have Moicy album was among the top ten for the decade selected by Rolling Stone. While many of his contemporaries are long past their prime (or deceased), Hurleys muse is still very much alive. Cover drawing by Michael Hurley, cover typography by Kiva Tanya Stimac. Presented in a hand-stiched, 48-page book; 5,75 x 7,75"." - Loie De Cravan.

Title: Back Home with Drifting Woods
Format: LP
Label: Mississippi
Country: USA
Price: $18.00
"Unbelievably great Hurley recordings from 1964, never before heard. Recorded by Fred Ramsey as part of the same sessions that resulted in Michaels First Songs LP on Folkways. Side A starts with Whatll You Say, Whatll You Do, a pretty psychedelic classic that can very well put you into some kinda trance. After that we hear The Blues Comes Around - a sad drifty little tune, then Little Girl On Roller Skates with a rare Hurley harmonica solo and hallucinatory lyrics worthy of some examination and then a beautiful alternate take on one of Michaels all time greats - The Tea Song. Side B starts up with yet more alternate takes of songs from the Folkways LP - this time of Intersolar blues and I Like My Wine. After that we get to hear two great compositions for the first time, and man oh man are they pretty - Hey Hey Hey Hey and I Love You Babe. Real great stuff all around that we recommend for deep into it Hurley fans and newcomers to his art alike. Michael Hurley is a great American song writer with his own unique way of seeing the world and this LP is a great testament to his vision. Faux folkways wraparound cover with liner note insert by Hurley himself. Co-release with our friends Neros Neptune." - Mississippi.

Title: Bad Mr. Mike
Format: LP
Label: Mississippi
Country: USA
Price: $14.00
"A new LP by the great Michael Hurley! Michael is one of the world finest and most prolific songwriters - and hes still cranking out hits. The well is far from dry. This LP features home recordings with Michael on guitar, banjo and organ. Sublime and sometimes a little strange - a new classic for the ages. Songs include the Kentucky 3 - a beautiful instrumental medley of songs evocative of Kentucky, Charona - a great banjo ballad, Tender is the guitar - a mournful organ driven ballad, Boone and Jocko - a longstanding favorite epic from Michaels live sets on record at last, Cuckoo Rock and Lo Bonney - two unique rewordings of traditional ballads, Dragging the Indian - a stark instrumental, and much more. Dont sleep on this work of genius. Cover art by Michael himself." - Mississippi.

"New recordings by Michael. On this LP we find Hurley stretching out on six longer than usual compositions that are heartbreaking & beautiful as anything hes ever done. Side one features Hurley on a creaky pump organ & a hammond organ. Side two starts out with two newer compositions - just Michael on guitar & vocals. The record ends with a stunning version of Tea Song (which Michael originally wrote & recorded way back in 1963). We rarely resort to hyperbole on these descriptions, but we have to say that this LP is one of the more moving things weve ever heard. A sustained feeling of loss & need for redemption haunts this record. It aint easy listening, but then what worth a damn is?" -Mississippi.

Title: Fatboy Spring
Format: LP
Label: Mississippi
Country: USA
Price: $14.00
"A full LP of never before released Hurley recordings from 1972-73! Great early versions of classic Hurley songs such as Automatic Slim & the Fatboys, Drivin Wheel, Ghost woman Blues, Watchin the Show, and The Portland Water that come off for the most part better than later releases of these songs. Hurley is backed up by The Fatboys - not the rotund hip hop crew from the film Disorderlies, but rather a bunch of not so fat nice guys in Vermont who played mostly for the local dairy farmers. (Later they were known as Sheriff Mocus & the Deranged Cowboys) A laid back countryish album sure to please the hardcore Hurley fan and casual listener too. Deep and breezy. Cover painting by Michael. A co-release with our friends label in San Francisco, Secret Seven." - Mississippi.

"You could be sitting there wondering why Mississippi releases such a huge amount of records by Michael Hurley (this is our eighth). To put it as mildly as we can - Hurley is by and large one of the greatest song writers of all time and we consider it an important part of our mission to get the world aware of his awesome talent. Here we have Hurleys latest batch of home recordings and believe me when I say they are some of his best songs ever. Its unusual for a man 50 years into his recording career to come up with some of his greatest songs yet, but here tis. Hurley plays heart breakers solo with guitar and/or organ accompaniment, along with three tracks where he is joined by the beautiful voice of Jolie Holland. Some incredible new songs such as the eerie Alligator in the Water, the poignant and all too true Disaster at the Wheel, the utterly cosmic Corridor, the near avant garde Doin the Opossum, the stone cold intense You Got to Die and on and on. True geniuses are hard to come by, so wake on up and give this record a long hard listen. If it doesnt move you, then I dont know what will." - Mississippi

Title: Parsnip Snips
Format: LP
Label: Mississippi
Country: USA
Price: $14.00
"Originally released in 1997 in Germany in a press size of 500. These original copies were seized by the government shortly after the records release. Only 150 or so were sold before the seizing, but since then copies have leaked out of whatever dank German bureaucratic basement they were relegated to. Still, a very hard record to find for years, now back in print. Our current reissue was re-mastered from the original tapes and has superior sound quality to the original. Culled from Michaels unreleased output between his First Songs LP from 1964 and Armchair Boogie in 1972. All tracks feature just Michael and guitar. Absolutely beautiful folk music by the singular Snock -- in our opinion, one of the greatest singer/songwriters of all time." -Mississippi
