Title: I Couldnt Love You More
Format: CD
Label: Ecstatic Peace
Country: USA
Price: $11.00
"My career in music is about to enter its 13th year. Lucky 13! Ive performed in at least 15 groups (probably more on the order of 20 if you count guest spots) over the years, the most prominent being the long-running quiet music combo Son of Earth and the short-lived-but-muchhyped Believers. Historically more of an experimental man, the Believers project showcased my always right-below-the-surface interest and passion for all things rock, and so, a couple of years after the demise of that group, I was approached by Ecstatic Peace, who asked me to produce a solo record. For the better part of a year I conceptualized, recruited, and eventually came up with I Couldnt Love You More. An early attempt to marry electronics, field recordings, and song was scrapped in favor of the personal and perhaps obvious choice of producing a covers record. It was the perfect idea, the realization of a dream. Years of singing in the shower and on long car trips had given way to the stuff of fantasy. Why stick to what you know when you can reach for what youve always desired? I asked friends to help with the realization. John Moloney, Phil Franklin, Ron Schneiderman, and Rob Thomas (all of Sunburned Hand of the Man), Ive known for years. Same with J Mascis. Old friends John Shaw (who Ive done more music with than anyone) and Lynn Meyers provide some vocals here and there, as does my wife, Jamie Jo Oltmans. The Wild Card here is John Townsend. Andrew Kesin of Ecstatic Peace introduced me to him, and he was a jack-of-all-trades. He plays on most of the tracks, sometimes exclusively, and co-produced. I chose songs from all over the map, from Rick Danko to John Martyn to the great Bill Fay. Not exactly lightweights, and quite intimidating when their full historical weight is taken into account. However, I attacked each piece with the intensity of one who truly loves these songs. I didnt concern myself with being overly arty or inventive in my interpretations (there are no truly radical re-workings of anything here), instead allowing my own emotional investment in the material to guide me and inform the other players. These are songs of love and longing. The themes are eternal. Its an honor to have had the chance to play them. Enjoy the music." -- Matt Krefting, December 2008

Title: Man in Revolt
Format: Cass
Label: Hank the Herald Angel Recordings
Country: USA
Price: $6.50
"When checking if I wrote about Matt Krefting before, I came to the sad conclusion I didnt. Which is odd, since hes closely connected to my beloved Idea Fire Company. Krefting is also a member of many other bands, such as Son Of Earth, Duck, Itchy Pits, The Believers, Destroyer and many more. He plays everything, everywhere and with everyone. Man In Revolt is the total opposite: hes alone at the piano, plus perhaps a bunch of electronics, most likely guitar effects. These are kept however to a minimum, as the main thing is the piano. Its an utter lo-fi, hiss covered tape, but no doubt its intended to be like that. Minor keys are played, while the sustain pedal is pressed down hard to add that darker texture to the music. On the B-side there is a short track Forgets Breakfast which is made with fog horns (or so it seems). Its a great release, along the lines of the recent Graham Lambkin CD, or even Organums recent work (Amen). A pity that its on cassette and not CDR - maybe I could ask for a re-issue?" - FdW, Vital Weekly.

Title: Lymph Est
Format: LP
Label: Kye
Country: USA
Price: $16.00
“Kye is proud to present Lymph Est, the brand new LP by Matt Krefting. Kreftings chronology is a deep-rooted and complex one, seeded in the foundation of the Apostasy imprint, and the animation of its numerous transitory groups, most notably Son of Earth, of which he played a crucial part. Concurrently, Krefting has won a reputation for his solo tape-based work, circulated primarily in secretive micro-editions, before eventually reaching a wider audience via last years critically acclaimed High Hopes LP (Open Mouth). Lymph Est presents the advance of Kreftings march, and stands as the purist distillation of his art to date. Taking the common garden apparatus of cassettes, mics and amplification, Krefting constructs a music of rare simplicity and abundant mystery. Treated voices, piano, samples and T.V. grabs are ushered into a series of soft-focus miniatures that are built to be razed in a perpetual cycle of triumph and defeat. Lymph Est exists as a far-flung landscape where outline and definition are lost to time, and the fading signature of recall wanes to a pallid script. Mastered by Jason Lescalleet at Glistening Labs Lymph Est arrives in a full color Krefting designed sleeve, with complimentary innerbags/labels in an edition of 400 copies.” - Kye.

Title: High Hopes
Format: LP
Label: Open Mouth
Country: USA
Price: $19.00
"High Hopes is recording of music for cassettes. While the general tone is experimental, the structural elements of song are not left behind. Each side is a continuous statement comprised of brief motifs and repetitive strains bleeding into one another, coalescing into a cold narrative of half-remembered, slow mbiras, 78s of an orchestra in endless refrain, a confused piano, a vocal hosanna... While the pacing allows a certain introspection and the tape fidelity allows a certain detachment, direction and concision are not sacrificed. Elements from side A reappear on side B recomposed, and an overall tone of melancholy is maintained throughout. E.M. Cioran said, A heart without music is like beauty without melancholy. Here... youve got it all." -Greg Kelley.
