Artist: MELCHIOR, DAN
Title: Plays The Greys
Format: LP
Label: Ever/Never
Country: USA
Price: $15.00
“Dan Melchior is artist as perpetual motion machine. We could say “shark,” but Dan doesnt sniff for blood in the water. Instead, he is inviting you to his private lake; his solace relies on his relentless creativity. Whether painting, writing, collaging or recording, Dan offers nothing less than words, images and sounds transmitted directly from his subconscious, but filtered through the rigorous process of a true artist. Dans latest offering is a superb collection of songs and sonic vignettes that dips down deep into lifes trenches. Here, where light has to fight to be noticed, misery, monotony and melancholy mingle and bleed into one another. Accordingly, Dan doesnt play the blues, he plays the greys.
Plays The Greys is a patchwork album, but dont let that imply carelessness. Each odd juxtaposition serves a purpose and illuminates its surroundings like a torch in the night. Part one and part two of the title track are perfect examples of Dans decidedly non-academic approach to musique concretes a-musical gestures. Field recordings bump up against back-porch guitar plucking that morphs into radio declarations by the good Christians among us. Praise be.
In more ways than one, “Death Has No Mercy” is the center of the album. Midway through its hazy meanderings, “Death…” jumps into an uptempo backwoods jaunt. Its good to know that the guitar is always there, providing a means for expression and catharsis. Suffering in recent years through immense personal tragedy, Dan channels all that pain and helplessness into an extended rumination on grief and the challenge of living with permanent ache. So forget what I wrote earlier -- Dan Melchior has indeed made a blues album, one fit for 2016, and beyond.- Ever/Never.

Title: K-85
Format: LP
Label: Homeless
Country: Australia
Price: $24.00
"K-85 is one of DAN MELCHIORs more song-based albums, with lo-fi electronic interludes interspersed between and occasionally through. Lyrical themes deal with some familiar standbys: isolation, daily humdrum, contempt for contemporary culture and a failure to be honest with ourselves. An occasional feigned Luddism might seem at odds with the bastard synthesising of traditional folk, but reflects more a weariness with his world from which solace can be found in the love of his wife LETHA. For those unaware, its an ideal album to begin their discovery of Dans amazingly rich, varied and consistent body of work-and as his first release on an Australian label we can hope that happens in spades-while his loyal fanbase need it as much as any of his previous releases. Let it be known that we here at Aarght Records are nursing a professional jealousy at Homeless coup in releasing K-85. This is a brilliant record." -Homeless.

Title: Melpomene
Format: LP
Label: Idea
Country: USA
Price: $25.00
"Dan Melchior has become an unlikely 21st century experimental music icon. As the forms, signifiers and experiments of the last several decades have become increasingly codified, one naturally begins to ask the question what the term in a contemporary setting means to the listener. If the performer and the audience both know what to expect before, during and after a record or performance, can it be considered an experiment? At the start of the century, Melchior was known in NYC as being a studied garage rock provocateur with songwriting palate that was equally insightful, vicious and emotive. This is not mentioned for alt rock bravado but to establish a pedigree that none of his immediate peers can claim, clearly showing a breadth of skill and technique they lack or refuse to engage in. Over the last ten years however, Melchior has continued to strip the edges off his music. On his new album, Melchior finds himself removed from any established school of sound. At times caustic, dubbed out and/or haunting, Melchior recalls obscure records weve never heard. The source sounds were mostly recorded on a little Sony mini cassette recorder. Some is live (pots and pans being hit -- etc.) slowed down on playback using the slower speed on the recorder -- some of it was recorded off of records and tapes, using the same recorder. The source sounds blurred to fit Melchiors tonal needs. Melodies arrive as well, the melancholy ballad Mall Walker evokes images of Satie if he recorded for Vinyl On Demand. The influence of his wife Letha Rodman Melchior is clearly evidenced as well, their combined techniques explored through years of creative collaboration. What is an experimental record? Perhaps the best definition is, an album that you wont know what it sounds like until you drop the needle." - Steve Lowenthal. Mastered by Rashad Becker. Comes on 180 gram vinyl; Comes in an Old Style Tip-On jacket.

Title: Excerpts (& Half-Speeds)
Format: LP
Label: Kye
Country: USA
Price: $15.00
"Dan Melchior is known by many as a long-standing footsoldier of garage rock. Throughout his fifteen years of service Dan has gained a reputation as being one of the few in his field willing to test the flexibility of an otherwise stagnant genre. Last years brilliant Assemblage Blues LP (Siltbreeze) showed Dan scratching at the bars of his cage, restricted by the very domain he dominates. Excerpts (& Half-Speeds) is Dan Melchiors hammer in the mirror. A courageous act of self-vandalism, reducing his own sonic signature to a series of fractured sketches, riffs, and run-throughs, glued together to create something akin to Another Green World for the fuck off generation. Excerpts (& Half-Speeds) arrives in a full color high gloss Melchior-designed sleeve, with insert, in an edition of 450 copies." -KYE

Title: Home of the Blues
Format: LP
Label: Kye
Country: USA
Price: $17.00
"Kye is proud to present Home of the Blues, the latest LP by Dan Melchior, and his sophomore effort for the label following 2012s now legendary Excerpts (& Half-Speeds). For Home of the Blues Dan agreed to undergo a series of exercises aimed not only at destabilizing his natural songwriting process, but also testing the durability of the blues idiom when placed under stress. As one would expect, Dan met the challenge with aplomb, hoisting the project beyond some one-dimensional art-school prank, toward a sincere and multi-faceted presentation of damage and survival as sound. Home of the Blues arrives in a full color, high gloss sleeve featuring original artwork by Dan, with an accompanying 18" x 24" foldout poster, in an edition of 400 copies." - Kye.

Title: Curator Culture Death Epoch Music
Format: LP
Label: Little Big Chief
Country: USA
Price: $14.00
300 pressed. "Dan Melchiors first release of 2013 (I say that with optimism) is bound to confound s much as impress. Haters gwan hate ad infinitum, but even still. The din of annoyance at Dans output by many-a critic is really just the pinched wheezing of prudes, straightenin their periwigs in a last ditch to cover up nervous bald spots. And dont you go joining em; ask me, the good times are just gettin underway.  In the hazy afterburn of The Backward Path, wherein we glimpsed Dan at his most lyrically candid, comes C.C.D.E, where words are half-smothered in the molting earth and linearity is just some other jaunt. Best I can tell, its a backyard wedding of Assemblage Blues and Excerpts & Halfspeeds, with Lard Free and Yuzo Iwata on the brides flank. As you might imagine, the voyage into the sunset of these two involves a roaring mutant chassis and plenty of muddy vistas off the backroads of songform. Is that the Texas outland in the distance? Either way, the geography ahead can only get woolier. But with Dans thoroughly Scotch-taped map at the ready, theres no need to clench yer cheeks. The next turns just up the road a piece, I swear." - Little Big Chief.

Title: Assemblage Blues
Format: LP
Label: Siltbreeze
Country: USA
Price: $14.00
"As DAN MELCHIOR continues to kick the Medway gutbucket to the curb, he is also willfully absorbing all mannerve underground cankerous crud along the way. For those endeared to wallet chains and crisp, cuffed jeans, this has been tantamount to heresy. But for thems whats embraced the sounds of "the new Dan," said aberrations are as welcome to caustic ears as a cold beer is to a setve parched lips. And while last years Visionary Pangs LP (released with DAS MENACE on the S-S label) was a grower and a half, Assemblage Blues snuffs it as if it were no moren a sneeze in the wind. "This here LP seemingly vibes from such leftfield Blighty heavies as Instant Automatons and L. Voag as well as the dark side of Alex Chilton (think Dusted in Memphis) and the 3:00 A.M. shudder of Prominent Disturbance. Within the canon of the Siltbreeze label, Melchiors magnificent malarkey on Assemblage Blues has secured him a spot somewhere between The Shadow Ring and Jim Shepard. The pone dont sizzle much hotter than there. And the sneezin is nil. Edition of 500, includes download card." - Siltbreeze.

Title: Slow Down Tiger
Format: LP
Label: Starlight Furniture Company
Country: USA
Price: $15.00
"In which The Dauphin of Durham completes, once and for all, the long and complicated process of self-extrication from musics No Exit--song structure. On Slow Down Tiger the forces of centrifuge, gravity and vacuums form a welcoming committee at the gates of dark plumbing otherwise known as Beyond. The first side-long piece, "Tongues" congeals into a grand mosaic, a kind of reverse Pangaea of mostly dissenting voices: Nicaraguan poet Nicanor Parra; a clip from Sult, the Swedish film based on Knut Hamsuns Hunger; Russian absurdist / surrealist Daniil Kharms; Jesuit priest Gerard Manley Hopkins; author of modernist masterpiece Briggflatts Basil Bunting; the eternally disenchanted Alan Dugan; Victorian heritage booster John Betjeman; and field recordings of the 1990 poll tax riots in London. It is a welcome new outpost in the cluttered frontier of found-sound tape composition. On the flip, the obvious touchstone of yet another side-long track, "Hospital Poem," is minimalist drone a la Basinski, Harold Budd or Tony Conrad, though Melchiors very personal approximation of the subtlest of ectoplasmic melodies repeated over and over ends up more dissonant and darker than one would expect. With its graceful marbling, tightly arranged as if restrained by a massage therapist, this elegant sausage would make the ideal soundtrack for an all-Lego remake of Solaris. Edition of 300 copies. Please check with your sales rep for a complete listing of Dans numerous titles." -Starlight Furniture Company.
