Title: Light Sleep
Format: LP
Label: Mesh-Key
Country: USA
Price: $20.00
"Propulsive rhythms from early drum machines, whirring electronics and dreamlike vocals make for a jaw-dropping late-career masterpiece from legendary Japanese musician Phew, recorded solo at Phews home in Tokyo.

Phews career began in the late 1970s as lead singer of Osaka punk group Aunt Sally (whose only full-length was released by Vanity Records in 1979). Ryuichi Sakamoto produced her first solo release in 1980, a two-song single, and in 1981 Pass Records released her debut album, a bonafide classic recorded with original Can members Holger Czukay and Jaki Liebezeit at Conny Planks studio in Germany. Shes forged a singular path over the past thirty-plus years, collaborating with folks from DAF, Einstürzende Neubauten, Boredoms, Anton Fier, Bill Laswell and more. Its borderline sacrilegious to compare an artist as unique as Phew with anyone else, but for those unfamiliar with her work, “Light Sleep” might be described as a more animated Nico singing (in Japanese) for early Suicide. Mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at D+M, Berlin." - Mesh-Key. Limited second pressing with slightly altered jacket and insert design.

"Living legend Phew follows her brilliant “Light Sleep” album with another masterwork – “Voice Hardcore” - comprised entirely of her iconic, instantly recognizable voice, twisted, folded and layered over six mesmerizing tracks. Recorded at home in summer 2017, this release finds Phew exploring an idea she first hatched while recording her debut single “Finale” in 1980 – to, in her words, “make new reverberations that I have never heard before, using only my body.” 37 years later, once again Phew proves herself to be the exception to the rule – a veteran artist with an estimable catalog spanning decades who, rather than repeating herself or playing it safe, charges headfirst into uncharted territory.
Phews self-released tour CD of “Voice Hardcore” was voted #23 Best Album of 2017 by The Wire Magazine (“A woozy, opiate-soaked stumble into a sparse dreamworld”).
This Mesh-Key vinyl edition features a silver foil stamped cover and a double-sided, full color insert, and comes with an mp3 download card.
