As that one mostly were Matts voice and his acoustic guitar, this 7" consists of four tracks of poetry for voice and harmonium, where beat-poetry would be a fairly good reference. Matt has also contributed on several Motorpsycho-tracks, on records as Demon box and Blissard. What will the title be? was recorded live at his final examination at the Academy of Arts 1999 direct to DAT." - Apartment. DIPSOMANIACS Subterfuge 7" (Apartment/Norway) 5.00 ***sale 3.00** "Dipsomaniacs is Mr. Evind Holm and has been active as a musical concept for about 5 years. Holm lives in Trondheim, Norway, where he writes, records and publishes his distorted beatle-infected popmusic. His music is something that goes to show that a good genuine pop song can be created without an expensive production, and tons of fancy sound effects. Holms new EP, "Subterfuge", contains four stunning pop-tunes, in the vein of Bevis Frond, Beatles and the Elephant 6-camp." - Apartment. From 1997. DIPSOMANIACS Stethoscopic Notion LP (Apartment/Norway) 12.00 ***sale 8.00*** "After the almost "concept album" feel of predecessor "Braid of Knees" this latest album returns to the pure song focus of the earlier "Reverb No Hollowness" album. This means that it can be firmly placed on a continuum of modern but 60s-influenced paisley pop, which started with bands like The Rain Parade and Dream Syndicate and continued on to bands like Green Pajamas, Olivia Tremor Control and The Photon Band. In fact, two tracks were co-written with the Photon Bands Art Di Furia ("Of Reaching Out" and "Bring Flowers to the Courthouse"), and the result is pure Transatlantic pop bliss. Di Furia also contributes vocals to the latter track. Aside from the songs, the key to the Dipsomaniacs sound is the extraordinary Lennon-on-Nitrous-Oxide vocal work of Holm. His voice is an instrument as instantly psychedelic as the sound of the backward-masked guitar or the sitar. The studio work on the album strikes a superb contrast between the immediate and the baroque, by recording songs as a band live in the studio, then over-dubbing strings and horns at subsequent sessions. The band will play at this years Terrastock festival in Boston. CD-edition released by Camera Obscura." - Apartment. The inherent nature of such places combined with my unfamiliarity with the particular places that I wandered through, provided an element of chance. One could say that some skill was involved in that I consciously moved through these environments with the idea of creating a compelling recording. I lingered in areas that sounded interesting. I positioned my head to create interesting stereo effects. I traveled up and down escalators. At one point I actually sat down and played a game.î [limited edition of 75, each packaged in clear jewel-case with transparent inserts and pachinko-like metal balls]." THE SCREAMIN MEE-MEES Clutching Hand Monster Mitt CDR (Slippy Town) 10.00 "The original Dog Face Records vinyl of this 1992 LP was the Mee-Mees public follow-up to their debut EP from 1977! Bruce Cole and Jon Ashline made probably the best "worst" record of the 1970s American punk thang; Live from the Basement is right down there with "Forming" and O. Rex. And then came Clutching Hand Monster Mitt! Still in the basement, but with better equipment; technique thats still primitive, but more sure and much more experimental; a style thats equal parts ACID and STOOPID. Like, theres a song called "Mudflap," but its instrumental and has a vibe somewhere twixt The Piper at the Gates of Dawn and the Godz. The whole records loaded with wah-wah, sloppy drums, and vocals in a kinda Legendary Stardust Cowboy style. Wonderful! Mastered from vinyl by a friend of Bruce. Edition of 92. CDR released May 2002." - Slippy Town. THE SCREAMIN MEE-MEES Nude Invisible Foot Phenomenon CDR (Slippy Town) 10.00 "Reissue of 1996 Bag of Hammers LP from Missouris premiere poets of basement-rock, low-tech experimentin, and righteous silliness. The eight minutes of "3 string classical guitar" (by drummer Jon Ashline) and tape manipulation called "Chinese Handcuffs" demonstrates wonderfully how much of the "serious" "art" music that got released in the 1990s was nothing but cynical, stillborn crap. Whoever decided you cant have a few laughs while youre lookin for a little space done got theyselves stuck! On the other hand, if you wanna open a frosty one and reclaim your whiteboy stoopid roots, check "Dogfishin," "The Grand Old Duke of York" (storytellin in the tradition of their 77 classic "Max Factor"), or "Goin to a Barbeque." But I think Ill grab the bong and check out "Smarter," a druggy bog up the bum of hierarchies everywhere, recorded in England by guitarist Bruce Cole with cover artist Todd Dillingham and friends. Although the song-poem company suggests in its promotional literature that it will support the finished recording, and that it therefore has a chance to become a smash hit, in reality once the record is completed and returned to the customer it is quickly forgotten about, in favor of the location and seduction of new victims. Song-poem companies profit by doing volume business, and so must create a literal factory of music, with the songs being shuttled from melody-writing to fabrication on an assembly-line basis. It is the aesthetic clashes between the work of the amateur and often graceless lyricists and that of the professional studio personnel forced to work too hastily that sparks song-poem musics unique pleasures. The genre has a long and colorful history, much of which is imparted throughout this website." - Phil Milstein, American Song-Poem Music Archives.
