Dimensions, privately released on his own Applied Science imprint in 1986, while sonically stunning, equally opens a schism with many of the standing narratives of history. It is an emblem and indication of a neglected context - the self-reliance, ambition, and DIY ethos, which electronics activated within the avant-garde. Where Punk has largely dominated our vision of the pathways away from the corporate hold on recorded music, there is another history, beginning far earlier, lasting far longer, and operating with more diversity, which begins with experimental and avant-garde musics engagement with magnetic tape and electronic process, following the Second World War. Bailey among the inheritors of this long arc - its movement away from larger studios, activated by advancing technology, which instigated a creative freedom, which our contemporary context still benefits.
Dimensions was recorded in Baileys home between 1978 and 1984. It features three remarkable improvised works for magnetic tape, utilizing a number of processes and sources. The clues to its depth begin with The Train To The Eighth Dimension, a work which, while drawing its sounds source from a Mini Moog synthesizer, is in fact is a deceptive work of nearly twenty-four minutes of tape delay. For Bailey, process is equal to, if not greater than, the nature of source. To create it, Bailey placed a set of open reel tape recorders side by side - the tape passing through the first to record and the second to play back, which then returned to the first. Built from white noise, modulated and filtered at a progressive rate, until it becomes a sine wave, after which the rate of modulation slowly decreases. The totality creates phasing of both the signal and beat, at variable rates - a marvel of Minimalism, as it has rarely been thought of, or heard. The second side features two equally remarkable, shorter works. 4HC is a discrete work for electric guitar made in 1982, employing a similar technique of tape delay and found on the previous side, complimented and offset by the longer and more ambitious From A Window· 1 a.m. Created in 1978, this work features two overdubbed sound sources - a field recording of several hundred crickets outside the artists bedroom, which prompted Bailey to improvise, and attempt to mimic them, by bowing a prepared electric guitar with a spring. The result is stunning world of shimmering rhythmic and tonal ambience, filled with an organic touch and warmth, the depth of which is rarely known in the world of electronics.
Approaching his lost debut, its wonder that James Bailey is not more well know. Dimensions is clearly a work of humble, but profound, importance. An album that everyone should have know and heard, but few in fact did - most copies remaining in its artists hands. We are thrilled to be able to off a limited number of this brilliant LP in its original pressing - an opportunity not to be missed. One of the great works of electronic DIY, brimming with warmth and creative brilliance. Stunning on every count. May its return amend the sins of time, offering Bailey all the attention he rightly deserves."

LP liner notes from James Bailey:

"I suppose there are myriad ways of starting liner notes, but in the absence of imagination, this will have to do. I hope they do not come off as too pretentious or formal, but I feel the sounds deserve some credit for what and why they are. Two of the pieces were created using a tape delay technique in which two open reel tape recorders are placed side by side and the tape passed through the heads on the first to record and on the second to play back. The signal played back from the second deck is returned to the first for re-recording, resulting in an extended delay the duration of which is determined by the distance between heads. The signal will continue to loop like this until noise and signal loss cause it to decay beyond recognition. New signals may he added at any time, and will behave in the same manner. In this way, anything from a simple pattern to dense clusters may be built up. These two pieces provide good examples of this.
The other piece uses overdubbing whereby sounds are combined with others already existing on tape. This is how virtually all pop music is recorded today. These are not multi-million dollar high quality studio recordings. They were made at home using simple Tandberg tape decks and good, although not professional-type tape. There are many flaws which the discerning listener will distinguish. I feel, however, that the sounds possess their own merit and deserve to be heard. I can only present them to you. Your own opinions will be determined by personal taste. All of the pieces are improvised, with little or no preconceived idea of their final form."

Tracklisting:
1. The Train to the Eighth Dimension (April, 1984) "This was created using a Mini-Moog synthesizer and tape delay. The right channel playback was returned to the left input and the left into the right. This results in the sound hopping or sweeping from side to side. It was built from white noise which was modulated and filtered. Both the modulation and filtering were slowly increased until the white noise became a sine wave signal after which the modulation was slowly decreased. As a result of the looping, phasing of both the signal and beat occurs at several points. From A Window· 1 a.m. (June, 1978)
"One of my earliest attempts at a serious tape music composition. Many of the playing techniques were the result of experiments carried out shortly before recording. There are two basic sound sources for this piece. The first, and the one which inspired the overall structure, was a chorus of what must have been several hundred crickets outside my bedroom window one warm summer night. The rhythmic pattern they created prompted me to improvise, and attempt to mimic, along with them by bowing an electric guitar string with the spring from a ball point pen. Other sounds were created by "preparing" the guitar. That is, objects were placed under, between, and over the strings to alter the sound. The strings were then tapped with whatever mallett-like implement was at hand. There is a romanticism found in Geoffrey, that, in my mind, sets his work aside from his Fluxfriends. Known for his timeless sky paintings, applied to canvas, cars, clothes, and so on, the conceptual married the majestic. He was a master painter, whose work could have filled cathedral ceilings. Instead, he chartered his bow alongside George Maciunas, John Cage, Dick Higgins, etc. in the 1950s. Hendricks became a prominent member of Fluxus, shown in exhibitions around the world for over 60 years. In the 1970s, composer Charlie Morrow approached Hendricks about recording an album for the New Wilderness Audiographics cassette series. This became a 40-year dance of orbiting schedules and slipping dates. The sky aligned in 2014, and a recording session at Ear Up Studios in New York manifested. Geoffrey's connection to nature not only focused upwards at the sky, but always downwards to stones. 'Rock Music' consists of a box of rocks being cast across a room. Pounded on wood, soft and hard, the sonar-like snapping echo mapping the dimensions of the room. Small bells hover over the rubbing of stones humming to each other. You can tell that this was a therapeutic ritual he practiced for years, not merely an improvised recording concept. With the LP is a booklet that includes diaries of his stone collecting on Cape Breton island in 1973, beautifully infused with dream recollection. The cassette of 'Music for Sky Slate Wall' was discovered by chance earlier this year in the vast archive Hendricks left behind. It holds Geoff's close friend Philip Corner performing at an Emily Harvey Foundation exhibition in 1999. Corner responds to the Hendricks installation, interpreting the wall adorned with watercolors of day and night skies, grey slate, and a ladder hanging more paintings and golden ornaments. Philip Corner performs with prongs, Korean shaman cymbals, his voice, and a shoe. Their charming friendship can be heard in the interplay. This project was made possible by Geoff's widow, Sur Rodney (Sur), his children, Tyche and Bracken Hendricks, Philip Corner, and Charlie Morrow." Includes 16-page pamphlet with essays by Tyche Hendricks and Charlie Morrow, diaries and artworks by Geoffrey Hendricks. Cugate Classics presents a reissue of the 2001 release Works For Choir by Arvo Pärt, one of the most important and influential composers of our time. Arvo Pärt (born 1935 in Paide, Estonia) doesn't need to be introduced to anyone who has the slightest interest in classical music, and his audience reaches far beyond the regular attendants of symphony halls. After first serial compositions, "Credo" (1968) was a turning point in Pärt's life and work, being the first piece carrying a religious title and expressing a creative crisis that Pärt answered by lesser compositions and studying medieval and Renaissance music in search for a new musical language. In 1976, Pärt returned with "Für Alina" and introduced his new (and self-developed) style that should become his trademark sound which made him the famous and honored composer he is now: the so-called tintinnabuli. In 1984, after the Estonian composer and his family emigrated from the USSR and settled in Germany, the album Tabula Rasa opened the next important chapter in PÄRT's career: the ever continuing close relation to Manfred Eicher and his ECM label where many of the composer's works have been released since. Works For Choir presents several compositions for choir from the period from 1989 to 1991, recorded in Vilnius with the award winning Vilnius Municipal Choir Jauna Muzika under the artistic direction of Vaclovas Augustinas. The Vilnius Municipal Choir Jauna Muzika choir was founded in 1989 by the conductor and composer Remigijus Merkelys and long-time director Algimantas Gurevičius and has since won several prizes, among others six Grand Prix in 16 international choral competitions around the world, and in 1993 it was awarded with the highest prize, the Grand Prix Europeo, in a competition organized by the International Federation of Choral Music. In a better world, it would warrant above-the-fold reviews in Downbeat, or an appearance on David Sanborn's late-night show (if someone would only give it back to him). More likely, we can hope for a haiku review on Byron Coley's Twitter timeline to sufficiently connect the various improvised terrains trodden by this long-time duo -- but if you've been able to listen past the overmodulated icepick fidelity of Harry Pussy, it should surprise you not an iota that Orcutt's style is rooted as much in the fractal melodies of Trane and Taylor as it is in Delta syrup or Tin Pan Alley glitz. As for Corsano, well, it may seem daft to call this particular record 'jazz' (because duh, it has a drummer), but to me Corsano is beyond jazz, almost beyond music, his ambidextrous, octopoid technique grappling many stylistic levers and spraying a torrent of light from every direction. Corsano's ferocity has elevated many 'mere' improv records to transcendence, but here he's crafted his polyrhythms within more narrative channels, bringing to mind his 'mannered' playing in the lamented Flower-Corsano duo. It's not 'groove' playing precisely, but it follows many grooves simultaneously, much like Orcutt's own melodic musings -- which is why they're so naturally lock-in-key here. Which maybe makes it all the more surprising that Made Out of Sound was in fact recorded in different rooms on different coasts at different times, and stitched together by Orcutt on his desktop. Corsano recorded the drums in Ithaca, NY, and (as Orcutt states), 'I didn't edit them at all. I overdubbed two guitar tracks, panned left/right. I'd listen to the drums a couple times, pick a tuning, then improvise a part, thinking of the first track as backing and the second as the 'lead', though those are pretty fluid terms. I was watching the waveforms as I was recording, so I could see when a crescendo was coming or when to bring it down.' Fluidity ties the tracks together. With a little more groove and a little less around-the-beat maneuvering, one could almost hear the boiling harmonic layers as Miles-oid in 'Man Carrying Thing,' but with new-found Sharrockian modalities, Corsano accentuating the tumbling nature of the falling notes. The Sharrock vein continues with 'How to Cook a Wolf,' its Blind Willie-esque melodic simplicity and repetition extrapolated 360-style in a repetitive descending riff that falls into Cippolina-isms (by way of Verlaine) until the end crashes upon the shore. Much like Orcutt's last solo album, Odds Against Tomorrow (PAL 056CD/LP, 2019), there's a gentler, almost pastoral flow to some tracks ('Some Tennessee Jar,' 'A Port in Air,' 'Thirteen Ways of Looking') that calls to mind the mixolydian swamplands of Lonnie Liston Smith -- but unlike Odds, other tracks ('The Thing Itself') smash that same lyricism into overdriven, multi-dimensional melodic clumps that push several vector envelopes at once in an Interstellar Space vein. With the help of Corsano, Orcutt has managed to slither even further out of the noise/improv pigeonhole lazy listeners/writers keep trying to shove him into. Looking at the back cover of Made Out of Sound, we should not see Orcutt hurling a guitar into the air with post-punk bravado, Corsano toiling behind him in the engine room -- we should witness an instrument levitating from his hands, rising on invisible major-key tendrils of melody, fired by percussion, spiraling into an invisible event horizon..." --Tom Carter.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/2295/2925/products/PAL063LP_CU_73cc4490-59b2-494a-86eb-4a7348c6331e.jpg?v=1621774146
eastman-julius-three-extended-pieces-for-four-pianos-sub-rosa-belgium-2cd
EASTMAN, JULIUS - Three Extended Pieces For Four Pianos
"Four Pianos (1979-80): It is recognized today that these tutelary pieces for four pianos are among the most powerful in contemporary music, their impact is almost unparalleled. More than simply an album title, Vertical Language refers to the distinctive musical approach that Higuchi has developed over the past twenty years. Her music is centered on the breath and pulse -- rather than set "horizontal" musical rhythms or structures. It illuminates the connection between the artist's body and sound. In her music, piano chords and voice sound out in an instant and expand, floating off in new directions. The music embraces silence and negative space or the Japanese concept of "Ma", as well as the small "imperfections" that any moment or sound might contain. Each moment in her music is as much imbued with what came before as what will come next -- each note expands in space and can never be seen from just one perspective. In her music, Higuchi is constantly taking us to a place that neither she or we can quite yet see." - Black Editions.

Originally released in 1981
2022 Reissue
Edition of 250

"At the dawn of the 80's, The United Kingdom was awash with regional compilations documenting the burgeoning local punk, postpunk, DIY movements that were swelling across Blighty. Jocy started composing at the age of six and was introduced to piano studies at a very young age by her mother who was a poet and pianist. Aguirre Records present the first official vinyl reissue of Fifty Foot Hose's Cauldron, originally released on Limelight in 1967. Cauldron is the legendary psychedelic jazzy rock and electronic album by Californian band Fifty Foot Hose. Fifty Foot Hose formed in San Francisco in 1967. Like few other acts of their time, they consciously tried to combine the contemporary sounds of rock with electronic instruments and avant-garde compositional ideas. They were one of the most radical groups of the psychedelic era, and their experimentalism still has the power to shock and surprise even now. What set them apart were the pioneering experiments in electronic music, like the band they are often compared to, The United States of America. Incorporating Theremin, siren, audio generators, and other various electronic effects, as Cork Marcheschi, the band's original bass player, had developed an acute interest in the dadaist/futurist experiments of composers like John Cage and Edgar Varese. David and Nancy Blossom brought both psychedelic and jazz influences to the band. Cauldron, their only album, was released in December 1967, including "Fantasy", "Red The Sign Post", and "God Bless The Child", a Billie Holiday cover. Their sound experiments differentiated them from their contemporaries and most audiences didn't quite know what to make of them. Fifty Foot Hose's music leans more towards White Noise, Silver Apples, and especially United States of America, rather than to flower power movement. After only one album, the proto-cyber psych outfit passed as quickly as they came. Their only mention would be a name-check in Ralph J. Gleason's 1969 book, The Jefferson Airplane And The San Francisco Sound, published over a year after their demise. Ralph J. Gleason wrote: "I don't know if they're immature or premature." History has proven them to be the latter. Today, the original album is very collectable and considered a touchstone of avant-garde rock music. Cork Marcheschi on the record: "The concept was to expand what contemporary popular music was. I thought the avant-garde could have had a home with this new group of listeners but they turned out to be pretty conservative -- intellectually. Drugs were fine -- sex was fine -- stop the wars was good but when challenged with abstract art., they reacted like conservative people look at a Jackson Pollock painting." Cover reconstruction by Jeroen Wille. Their works evoke the visionary ideas of Walter Smetak, a Swiss composer who lived in Salvador, Bahia (Brazil). Smetak was a pioneer of musical experimentation in that country and developed, in the '60s and '70s, a musical poetics that was captured in two seminal albums, Smetak (1974) and Interregno (1980), both of which, after being out-of-print for a long time, have been reissued today, hence the motivation for this tribute. On those two albums, Smetak combined Afro-Brazilian ritual traditions, theosophy, microtonality studies, collective improvisation and the use of unconventional musical instruments, which he called "Plasticas Sonoras". Smetak came to build around 150 acoustic instruments, many of which are true sound sculptures of great visual impact. This latter aspect is the most directly evoked one on this album -- and it so happens that the Smetakian spirit tunes in with a new community of contemporary artists, who relate to the work of the so-called "experimental luthiers", artists who build their own instruments (Marco Scarassatti, Phillipp Laeng, Maria Anália), lead them towards radical extended versions (Ruben Dhers, Claudio Merlet), develop hybrid projects involving instruments and sound sculpture (Javier Bustos, Álvaro Icaza and Verónica Luyo, Juan Pablo Egúsquiza, Edgardo Rudnitzky) or take the exploration towards the building of resonant machines (Nicole L'Huillier, O Grivo, Zimoun, Cod.Act), without these categories being mutually exclusive, but rather tending to mix, thereby opening up new sonic possibilities. This new community of artists has begun to create a whole new field of research and, in a way, a new discipline, understandable within the context of this new paradigm opened by the maker culture, which has pushed creators and developers from all over the world to conceive alternative -- anti-hegemonic and DIY -- forms of production. Therefore, this collection allows the artists to evoke Walter Smetak but also to connect his work to this new scene -- to which it precedes -- a link for this new art that makes its way at some point among the work of experimental luthiers, sound art, experimental music and the DIY ethics. Since then, quite a bit has happened. Agate has relocated to her native Australia and the move has treated her well. Fountain Fountain Joyous Mountain takes a lot of the ideas from her first record and dials them in, pushing everything to the next level. This collection of songs is a quiet force, blissfully confident and expertly assembled. Sanso's soundworld is a fully immersive environment. On the opener, "Fountain Fountain," we get a glimpse of everything to come. There's this carefully controlled chaos at work that is immediately hypnotizing. Agate sings simple passages toward the end, welcoming listeners into this new world as her voice floats above the fray. It becomes obvious as the album progresses that Agate is, at heart, a drummer. The staccato rhythms and percussive embellishments bring the album to life. These rapid-fire beats in conjunction with precise, half-speed instrumentation work in perfect harmony. Reminiscent of Blackdance-era Klaus Schulze at times, there's an intoxicating dizzyness that is effortlessly present in "The Origin Of Birds" and "Wood Owl Wings A Rush Rush." Agate even throws a few nods to free jazz with "Goodnight Thylacine." Her skill as a drummer is matched by her ability as a songwriter, knowing when to push it over the top and when to hold back. Album closer "Exit: Joyous Mountain," sounds like a lost Alan Lomax gem with its melodica/harmonica duet and delicate singing. "Hello Night Crow" is the literal and figurative center of the album, though. It starts with a ringing synth loop that gives nothing away until the chord changes emerge a minute in. Again, it's about the slow-build, raising the tension and anticipation before melting into the sky. "You wouldn't recognize that it's not there anymore," Agate sings over the bubbling waves of synths. This is nasty stuff that your parents should have steered you away from! There are a couple of murder ballads, (both with a twist of gender reassignment to keep it all a bit more unsettling). Their original songs are also peculiar and twisted. Jowe contributes 'Osiris and Isis', which is about indecent carnal relations between siblings, and a creepy tune called 'Satellite' which appears to be about voyeurism, surveillance and technology. There is also 'Tempelhof', about an abandoned airfield in Berlin, and 'Scapegoat', dedicated to outsiders everywhere. Jasmine offers 'Wonder Blunts the Knife', a dawn prayer full of tense revelations, and 'Memento', a nihilistic groove celebrating the advantages of being dead. These tracks, which mix conceptual composition and musicality, transcend the ambient or lowercase categories too quickly applied to his music, due to its ghostly beauty. In the tradition of John Cage's Cartridge music amplified objects, Steve Roden extracts a fine and delicate music through his manipulation of specific objects, with an apparent simplicity that hides a captivating magic. Whilst reinventing a form of ambient music which is discreet and atmospheric, Steve Roden delivers sound textures, gives shape to color swatches, traces vibrant frequencies and creates visual art objects. Roden, both a visual and a sound artist often tagged as minimal for want of a better description, builds the sound design of a life, a new construction for the future which encompasses architecture, visual arts, and painting in a single form. "The Radio" (1996): The sound sources are derived from the object itself -- the airwaves as well as the internal mechanics (aerial, springs, knobs). Originally released as a mini-CD by Sonoris, this work centered on Roden's voice and found sound loops is now unexpectedly considered a classic and was seen as "a particularly modest form of genius" in a review by The Wire at the time. "Airria" (Hanging Garden) (2003): Arnold Schönberg's work The Book Of Hanging Gardens haunts the piece, and is used as a backbone over which a ghostly and exhilarating vocal hovers. Both unsettling and relaxing, this track from the Speak No More About The Leaves CD has strangely become a mini phenomenon on YouTube with its number of views and comments. "Vein" (1996): A few seconds taken from a Ralf Wehowsky piece are shaped into a nocturnal raga imbued with substances of an indeterminate nature. His work includes painting, drawing, sculpture, film/video, sound installation, text and performance. The Scottish musician, born in 1953 in Port Glasgow, is one of the most eclectic artists of the so-called minimal wave scene. Alongside German singer Claudia Brücken (vocalist of the hit-makers Propaganda) he formed Act a short-lived synthpop group signed to ZTT Records in the late '80s. Licensed by Cherry Red in 1982, the double album Contradictions is the third effort in Leer high and rising career. After the seminal debut on Industrial Records with Robert Rental -- The Bridge (1979) -- Leer ventured on a solo career with the brave synth wave of Letter From America and his personal masterpiece Contradictions. The latter is such an enigmatic piece of work, with alien melodies as in the case of the "Soul Gypsy" infectious white funk. The whole album was recorded in his living room at home onto 4-track using borrowed equipment (Korg synth, Ult Sound drum computer, guitars) from his friend Morgan Fisher. Featuring Leer's haunting, uncertain vocal -- recorded quietly, so as not to wake his girlfriend in their bedsit! -- crooning over a minimal bass pulse and discreet whines and washes of primitive Wasp synthesizer, it retains its peculiar lo-fi magic four decades on." - Spittle Records .

"Long-awaited reissue of the second full-length album from 1982 by late 1970s/early 1980s UK DIY super-group The 49 Americans. Along with contemporaries Franco Battiato, Juri Camisasca and Giusto Pio, Messina would help reshape the world of modern composition with an organic rawness and haunting beauty. In 1979, Messina was asked to perform at the Teatro Quartiere in Milan. As the composer writes in the liner notes, 'Due to the limited availability of key technical features, it would have been too complicated to perform Prati Bagnati, and therefore I opted for these three pieces instead. We had never actually tried them all together, so I thought about renting a recording studio the previous afternoon. In that way, we could rehearse in a suitable place and use the opportunity to record the music on tape.' Unreleased for over thirty years, the recordings on Reflex have an unadorned, almost improvisational feel. 'Untitled' (featuring Lovisoni's plaintive flute) and 'I Nuovi Pescheti' are full of meditative piano passages that lend an aura of new age, while the title track is more insistent with unfurling chords layered in real time via a reel-to-reel tape machine, resembling Steve Reich's mesmeric phase-shifting works of the '60s. A central figure within the Italian avant-garde, Francesco Messina gracefully expands his country's contribution to Minimalism.
