Dempsey present a reissue of Willem Breuker and Han Bennink's New Acoustic Swing Duo, originally released in 1967. Late in 1967, saxophonist Willem Breuker and drummer Han Bennink recorded the first LP for the new artist-run free improvised music label, ICP Records. New Acoustic Swing Duo was an instant classic, and remains one of the most enduring documents of Dutch improvised music ever recorded. With Breuker's omnidirectional reed work, which ranges from plaintive to excoriating, occasional sneering tone adds a kind of ironic twist to the expressive outpouring. He could be as explosive as Peter Brötzmann, but Breuker has a razor-sharp wit and sense of humor. Since this recording, Bennink has gone on to be seated among the royalty of jazz and improvised music drummers. At the time, he was a fresh-faced 25-year-old, hauling around increasingly immense kits with heaps of percussion flotsam and jetsam, playing tabla and vibrapan, and sparking it all with tsunami energy. Keep in mind, Coltrane and Ali had just recorded Interstellar Space (which would not be issued until 1974), and the economical drum/sax lineup was by no means yet a standard in improvised music. Shortly after recording this, Breuker and Bennink would join Brötzmann to record Machine Gun (1968), another European free music keystone. Somehow, despite its historical importance and aesthetic magnificence, New Acoustic Swing Duo has never been available as a stand-alone CD. Remastered from original tapes, this reissue includes the original cover with the "ICP 001" hand-stamp, as well as several versions of the handmade covers designed by Bennink, drawn from Mats Gustafsson's wonderful collection. Hefty slabs of beefy beats are seasoned with spicy South Asian melodies while mouth numbingly hot bass lines are smothered in distortion chutney; Souk Bou Saada was broiled in Machester's finest tandoor and is now served by Staalplaat. If you love East Indian flavors with a neo-bhangra beat, this disc will not disappoint, equally at home on the dancefloors of Bradistan, UK or Mumbai, India. On a buffet, this sizzling dish ought to be placed somewhere between Silknoose and Lahore & Marseille, but with some unique takes on bhangra beats. The disc opens with the fading echoes of breaks before a woman's voice croons an old Punjabi song for several seconds; enter track two with its infectious stomp-beats, slices of sizzling distortion, masala violin with turmeric dulcimer and ghee-laden hand percussion bits. Muslimgauze fans will need to dance off this caloric intake. Tracks two through five can school even the likes of MIA on what grime-laden ethno-dance beats are really about, best for the more intensely choreographed moments of a Bollywood dance routine. Hovering throughout most of Souk Bou Saada, like dense smoke from a barbecue flame, is a layer of distortion as if from a not-quite-tuned-in radio. When the distortion crackles in time to the beats, the realization hits that this was just another texture the late Bryn Jones used, the way a sculptor works with sheet metal and a blowtorch to add a new dimension to abstract works. By track five, the album style veers into ambient-drone-radio-play territory as bass lines roll through agitated voices in North African dialects amidst urban environs, evocative of material from Veiled Sisters. Track six brings back the beat, this time in the same dusty North African villages while flute melodies, string instruments and gauzified slabs of distortion recall parts of Jebel Tariq. Track six returns to East Indian flavors with a variance from Hussein Mahmood Jeeb Tehar Gas, only with restrained beats culled from hand percussion but with menacing bass lines and distant Punjabi vocals. The final track book-ends the album on a South Asian bent with celebratory beats and ululating vocals with harmonium bits and lots of distortion, almost to the point of obscuring the music. Though Souk Bou Saada overall is decidedly East-Indian, it also acts as a bridge between the above-mentioned albums, great for Muslimgauze completists who want to hear all versions of previously-released works along with something new and essential to those who are slaves to the rhythm." - Staalplaat .
"200 gram vinyl. The masters were originally submitted in 1997, then "replaced" by what became Vampire of Tehran, released early in 1998. It was not uncommon for the prolific Bryn Jones to replace masters with what he believed to be a more fit release. Short of two tracks, "Fez Tishan" and "Hamas Pulse of Revenge," this is Vampire of Tehran with nine additional, previously unreleased tracks. Because Sulaymaniyah was "replaced," it was stored in Staalplaat's vaults until its first CD release in 2009, a decade after Jones's passing in 1999, and it will take several more years before Staalplaat has completely caught up with additional "replaced" and unreleased masters. Sulaymaniyah is stylistically varied, with ethno-electro, ethno-breakbeat, and several dub cuts. Ethno-electro/breaks are analogous to urban dance/hip hop, with catchy, distortion-ridden breaks and heavily edited ethnic music, cut up and reassembled into Frankenstein hybrids, sometimes further complicated with dub elements. Wanton mixtures of styles are one of many defining qualities of Muslimgauze music. Like "replaced" masters, versions of tracks such as "Arabs Improved Zpain" and "Arabs Return Zpain" demonstrate Jones's near obsessive search for the right sound. While elements of Minaret Speaker appeared on the 7" of the same name released by Staalplaat in 1996, much of the strongest material here is previously unheard. Jones' normal practice was to send in tapes to the label with only a title for each tape as a whole, then provide individual track titles before each release. Sadly, with his passing in 1999, there remain many projects with only album titles -- barring a séance, the tracks themselves will always remain untitled. The material on Minaret Speaker can be broken into two groups: the first, the ten tracks that make up the bulk of this release, make clear immediately why Jones picked that title for the album, with the ten-minute "Minaret Speaker Track 1" serving as a duo for his trademark digitally distorted percussion loops and what certainly sounds like a recording of a call to prayer, or adhān. The voices on the tracks here are ones that may well have come out of an actual minaret speaker at some point. On these tracks, as the musical backing gets harsher and more distorted, the voices reach toward deliverance; the results, even on wordless interludes like the string-based "Bamboo Bound," can seem more approachable than other Muslimgauze works. The four "Rest Tracks" that make up the end of this release form a brief bonus EP of even-lower-fidelity-than-normal works in progress from Jones, with "Rest Track 1" immediately sounding like Jones putting his own work through some new contortions. Something similar could be said, too, about the work of Bryn Jones - also known as Muslimgauze. Jones died in 1999, at the age of 38 -- but produced an incredible body of work, much of which remains unreleased. From the ultra-creative period that brought us Hamas Arc (1993) and Vote Hezbollah (1993) -- and also the lost album Shekel of Israeli Occupation (the master of which was returned to Jones -- who regarded the peace treaty signed in 1993 by the PLO, the original dedicatees of the album, as a betrayal -- and the music was subsequently erased) -- were the first signs that Jones had a wealth of unreleased material -- so much so, in fact, that Staalplaat decided to give fans a "free" release in exchange for sacrificing a part of the cover of Hamas Arc: if you cut out the insert from the CD cover and sent it in with a blank DAT, you'd eventually have your DAT sent back to you, but now as a free six-song DAT-only release (the severed part of the Hamas Arc cover would become the j-card cover for this new release - named Satyajit Eye -- and please note that xeroxed copies of the original CD inlay were not accepted...) Hamas Arc turned out to be one of the most successful releases from Muslimgauze, and endless amounts of these DATs have been copied. The DAT consisted of three original pieces, and three remixes from Vote Hezbollah; but there were also three pieces that were on the original master which, for reasons we may never know, were not used on the final release. Unsurprisingly enough, Satyajit Eye was eventually bootlegged -- but not until this year. This expanded version, however, completes the whole picture of this album -- showing us the first signs of Jones looking towards Indian music for inspiration; but also with breezy, desert-like rhythms and sounds (such as the intense "Zion Poison" -- which reminds us of O Yuki Conjugate), or the way-out music of the title-track. Satyajit Eye is a mysterious album, full of hidden layers; and evokes a lonely yet warm feeling of sun-covered sand dunes." - Staalplaat .

"One day in the studio, something ridiculously great happened. All compositions are by Sonny Clark including such hits as "Cool Struttin'" and "Something Special" both from his classic late '50s/early '60s Blue Note sessions. Musiq Musik (1973): Berrocal's first album, recorded in 1973 with the excessive reverberations of the crypt of the church Saint-Savinien in Sens, is a real notebook of sound travels, of instruments reported by Jac Berrocal and Roger Ferlet during their numerous journeys: Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nepal, India, Jordan, Iraq, Syria, including various instruments such as bells, muezzins, conches, shenaïs, cymbals, and gongs embellished with urban and incongruous sounds: horns, whistles, chickens, harmonium, and washing machine. The idea? Make music together, Jac Berrocal, Roger Ferlet, Dominique Coster. Paralleles (1976): Vince Taylor, the Black Archangel of rock n' roll, agrees to come and record "Rock n' Roll Station", a piece of futuristic clinking of a bicycle wheel. Other sessions contrary to custom, a pigsty with microphones mired in the middle of unruly pigs, towels shaken by Pierre Bastien in the middle of this is a noisy piece "Bric-à-Brac" made in homage to Luigi Russolo's repertoire reorganized by bonuses and unpublished from the same period. Catalogue (1979): Jac Berrocal and his "Marquises of Disorder" make the guitars rattle in primrose-sprayed vomit, patchwork of uncontrollable slows, furious accordion (Claude Parle) and martial rocks. Kind of "Micro-cinemas put end-to-end", a maelstrom of cries and saturation which, paradoxically, an album that is worth the respect of the punks and the contempt of jazz purists. It is known that Jones looked further than the Palestinian conflict, and also borrowed extensively from the rhythms of India, Pakistan, and other Eastern cultures. Like crossing borders in the bigger Islamic region, Jones takes whatever comes to hand, and moulds it into his own trademark sound -- often imitated, never surpassed. The tribal bang of the drums, the sampled voices of the radio, combined with a strong sense of melody, makes the music of Muslimgauze stand out a mile from the rest. Whereas others fell into the traps of commercialism, Muslimgauze remained faithful to his own principals and methods. Even in digging through the vaults of his recordings, it's hard to find material that is of a weaker nature -- as Al Jar Zia Audio will prove. There is the uplifting dance rhythms of "We Have Shafika Habibi On Our Bus" (which incorporates the chirping of crickets), the bubble-bass of "Arvinada Jewel Box," and the endless crackles of sunburned vinyl; but there are also curiosity pieces such as the highly experimental "All I Have Is Sand," and the "stop-start" approach of "Brotherhood of Tikrit." Bryn Jones was not just a master who refined the art of sampling, he also knew how to create a fine piece of music out of it, and more often then not displayed a very strong sense of melody. Windows open up and we hear music. Not the music by Muslimgauze, but traditional music. We hear the Adhan, the call for prayer, the souk and people talking. Music comes from all directions -- rhythmic, mysterious, monotonous perhaps, but swirling like a dervish, round and round it goes. The music of Islam was such an inspiration for Bryn Jones (1961-1999), although perhaps "inspiration" probably doesn't justify the seemingly endless flood of material he recorded during his life. Islamic Songs is a previously-unreleased album which now sees the light of day. Although albums by Muslimgauze were usually not thematically based, it's perhaps possible to see Islamic Songs as a thematically organized album, not set in a specific surrounding, but moving along inside the busy city of the occupied Palestinian land. Jones produces his beats with considerable force on the opening piece "I Shall Sing Until My Land Is Free" and on the sixth track, which has a nice, deep bass thump. It's the sound of a low-flying drone, spying on us. A female voice is singing, guided by a tribal dance beat -- a classic Muslimgauze opening move. From then on it's down to the Kasbah, and we hear tablas, samples of stringed instruments, and obscured vocal samples. There is a moment of rest on "Sahara Head Dress," and we wake up back on the airplane, back home, with "System Virus Abuse 1, 2 and 3," a short piece on digital failure. This is a mostly beat-driven album with little background noise, ambient space, or reverb. There is also no big emphasis on Middle Eastern sounds, which (and you should be figuring this out by now) is a frequently occurring theme in Bryn Jones' politically-driven music. Occasionally, there is some melodic material, or a touch of the Middle East sprinkled in, but it's played down in favor of beats that could best be described as very raw and closer to early Autechre minimalism than something from the World Beat genre. Hiccupping along, distorted break beats sound like they were once made from real drums, but Mr. Jones has turned the gain up way too high and ripped the drums to shreds. Since then, they've been heavily tweaked, turned into glitches, bloops, and blips. A downbeat gets set, only for it to sound like someone hit pause on the CD player. Machine-like loops reminiscent of Krautrock repetitiveness suck me in, only to be shut off without warning. As the beat finally starts to seduce me and I realize I could happily listen to the same repetitive thing for the duration of the CD, the plug gets pulled and the beat is deprived of oxygen just as it finally proved it could "groove." Each title is a page in the Iranair inflight magazine. Unlike O Meadowlark (FTR 451LP), this one features a smattering of Joseph's vocals, although his main thrust is still glistening instrumentals. The title song is a goddamn sad one, sung with reedy elegance, dealing with a kidnapped dog that serves as a stand-in for all earthly beings, full of both frailty and resilience. Another vocal track, 'The Crown' (which inspired the cover art), stems from a long conversation Joseph had with Max Ochs. It squeezes the inherently surreal aspects of dream-walking into semi-conventional blues tautology, and the fit is just right. The third and last vocal, 'O Columbia,' is a particular favorite, based as it is upon the some of the same melodies Fahey swiped for 'In Christ There Is No East or West,' although Allred takes things in all new directions. I had been a tad leery when I heard Joseph would be singing on this new session -- being so enamored of his unadorned instrumental technique -- but these tunes won me over in the course of a few plays. Maybe there'll be more verbal-content in his future? We would not say, 'no.' But the meat of this album remains Joseph's splendid inventions for guitar and banjo. His piece for Glenn Jones, 'The Giant Who Shrank Himself,' is a beautiful suite, worthy of its concept (that Jones is a behemoth who has to shrink himself in order to deal with us normals). It flows like the sweetest stream of wine you, I or anyone might imagine. 'Single Me a Stranger' is another literal killer, with sliding chords evoking the 1872 lynching and curse-fulfillment of an unlucky newcomer in the small Tennessee town where Allred grew up. It's spell-binding. As is 'Mark's Overture,' a banjo piece inspired by a homeless music critic in Cambridge, Mass. Another top-notch album by this great player. Again the increased space of its new medium has allowed unreleased material from the original tape to be included. This time, however, the extra material is neither alternate versions of Tandoori Dog material nor new songs intended for those releases; the two extra tracks here, clocking in at near 15 minutes and just under eight minutes each, make up unused material from the Return Of Black September sessions (MUSLIM 004CD, 1996). The contrast, even for Muslimgauze who had such a wide range, is stunning. The original Jerusalaam fits in with much of Bryn Jones's classic work, with a heavy emphasis on hand percussion, bass-heavy distortion, sharply clipped loops, and the seething hiss of static. The two otherwise unnamed Return Of Black September tracks, however, follow that album in taking a much more cleanly digital feel, with many of the elements Jones usually uses present but in more stripped down or even mechanized forms. The relatively clean pulse of these two longer compositions serve as a refreshing contrast next to the hand- and tape-made feel of tracks like "All The Stolen Land Of Palestine" and "Hessian Bag Of Camel Parts", an invigorating reminder of the breadth and vitality of Jones's work. Hearing him breathing in between the beats and putting his headphones down at the end and getting up and walking out of the room, that was eerie. But again, it was nice at the same time."
"Though it was December in the Manchester recording studio and the room properly heated, nevertheless a shiver went down John Delf's spine when the first tentative taps scurried across the surface of the hand drum, followed by a melodic drizzle of rhythms that flowed from the studio monitors. The source was analog reels of his recording sessions with Bryn Jones from 1993 to 1998. Not commonly known (and elaborated in detail in the forthcoming book, Muslimgauze: Chasing the Shadow of Bryn Jones) is that more than an audio engineer, Delf in a sense could be considered a part of Muslimgauze and that some musical stylings can be attributed to his involvement. When Jones hired Delf at the Cutting Rooms Studio in the Abraham Moss Centre in Manchester (credited as the Abraham Mosque on Muslimgauze releases), he was educated on how to use the recording studio as an instrument. They took turns at the mixing desk and produced such pristine recordings as Vote Hezbollah, Hamas Arc, and Veiled Sisters. Sessions were booked once a month, and lasted between four to eight hours each time wherein numerous versions of each song was composed. Jones distilled tracks from these sessions onto masters to submit to labels. Unused portions remained and Jones later revisited these bits to release later or rework. Late in 1998 Jones stopped booking the studio and it was not until mid-1999 that someone finally took the time to explain to Delf why. Delf kept the reels in storage for well over a decade until he was approached by The Muslimgauze Preservation Society in late 2010. Since Jones' passing, Delf further honed his audio engineering craft to greater, refined levels as he worked for marquee bands while building a studio to rival the Cutting Rooms. Says Delf, 'The reels were always something that I was looking forward to having a go at (once more). It was quite exciting to see whether the tapes would actually work or not usable at all. When I put the first tape on it was 'oh no, it is a complete disaster. Not working! What are we going to do?' But when we put the second tape on we thought, 'oh wow! It's all there!' The sonic quality was still there and it was still really bright and full. It instantly returned me to the sessions that we did. Hearing the beats, then the excitement returned. Once I got the reels going, then I realized, 'hang on, there's more here.' It was an eerie and joyful experience. We (Bryn and myself) worked together for a very long time and it went on for 6 years, once a month for a few hours and so it was a long-term relationship. It was nice to go back and hear it again and to know that there are still people, years after he is gone, interested and still want to hear it.' In Search of the Abraham Mosque has a two-fold meaning; one is a search for the studio where legendary Muslimgauze albums were recorded. The second is a reference to the Abraham Mosque in occupied Jerusalem, the tomb of the patriarchs where prophet Abraham is believed to be buried. On this disc, a musical narrative of this journey unfurls over 67 minutes starting at the fringes of Egypt amidst hip hop rhythms, then wanders off into the desert towards the famed Abraham Mosque. Bryn Jones' hand drumming is intimately showcased while cinematic atmospherics and cinematic ambience compliment his organic rhythms. Melodies, both subtle and overt, float in and out of the narrative much like the myriad of voices that converse and shout in Arabic dialects alongside urban and nature sounds, not unlike a radio play. Some moments are serene, whereas others wander through a dense sandstorm goaded by powerful waves of sub bass that instill a growing sense of fervency in the search. Material here will be familiar to Muslimgauze aficionados, but alternate versions and brought in a new light with surpassing audio quality. The narratives continues to wander through dusty Arab villages and refugee camps, the Islamic call to prayer discernible, implying the Abraham Mosque at last found and hints a second part of the narrative, Return to the Abraham Mosque. DEΔD-LOOP offers another arm in Barnes' wide-ranging body of music and work, as well as supplying an additional thread connecting the House, pop and sound art conversations the album engages. In many ways DEΔD-LOOP is house music that takes a sideways approach to the language of dance music. As both a concept and a practice, Barnes aims to turn house on its side, reconsidering its structure and form. The tracks on DEΔD-LOOP reflect Barnes' status as a renowned percussionist, offering rhythms and textures that both draw the listener in and maintain a spatial and temporal distance/uncertainty. This distance can best be heard on the quiet closing track 'NAKU,' but also in the hyperactive and layered percussion of 'AEMO' and 'GUALA.' This record isn't all concept, however, as the lead off tracks 'HORNA' and 'KONQR' sound like something you might hear at rave, albeit standing outside the club in the middle of day after everyone has crashed. The foggy celebration continues on this record, however; listen to 'JAPE' and its play with language, cracking words open and hearing what comes out of the space between syllable and sound. Since 1995, Tim Barnes has been internationally acclaimed as a musician, having played with a range of artists including Tony Conrad, Ikue Mori, Sonic Youth, Glenn Kotche, P.G. Six, Mike Watt, Royal Trux, Stereolab, Jim O'Rourke, Beth Orton, among others. Barnes has most recently become known for his radical site-specific sound art duo with Jeph Jerman (Erstwhile, IDEA Intermedia, Feeding Tube). Working across both genre and instrumentation, Barnes' singular history as a musician reflects his versatile ear and performance range. Barnes has also done important research and work as an archivist and engineer, most notably through his Quakebasket-imprint. Here we have an excellent example of the perils and rewards of that approach; eight mixes, just over an hour, of some of the dubbiest, most spacious material Jones ever put to tape. The tracks collected on Un-used Re-Mix's 1994-1995, the newest release in Staalplaat's Muslimgauze archive series, are too good to leave collecting dust, but Jones never got around to organizing or even titling them (except, perhaps, inside of his own head). The truly diligent might be able to track down the source for some of these tracks after hours poring over the rest of Muslimgauze's vast discography, but no such trainspotting is needed to appreciate the smeared, haunting vocal and hand percussion of the third track, or the ominously rattling, echoing sixth track, or the heavy organ overlay that brings the last track as close to shoegaze as Muslimgauze ever came. So much of Jones' work evokes the sounds and atmospheres of the Middle East, India, and other points further south than his own Manchester environs; the remixes here bring a bit of that northern chill into the veins of these productions, resulting in an album that sometimes feels like Muslimgauze venturing into outer space. Without the political context that Jones no doubt intended for these tracks, we're left only with the actual sound, a sound that continues to retain its power and striking individuality. Recorded at the legendary Sonobeat Studios in Austin (home of Mariani) and originally released in 1971 as a private demo album, now impossible to find. Originally formed in California in the late '60s, Wildfire consisted of Randy Love (guitar, vocals), Danny Jamison (bassm lead vocals), and Donny Martin (drums). Famous for powerful live shows, they packed the clubs with lines around the block of fans waiting to enter, becoming the house band for Finnegan's Rainbow and the favorite group of The Hessians Motorcycle Club, who became the unofficial guardians of the band. Soon, they got in touch with Pat Quilter from Quilter amps. Tired of blowing up amps when playing, Randy told Pat to design an amp that couldn't blow up. And he did it. Following Wildfire's input, Pat designed for the band the famous "Master Volume Dial" amp. In 1969, a Texas promoter heard the band in Southern California and brought them to Austin, becoming an instant hit locally in the Austin area. While in Texas, Wildfire shared the stage with Freddie King, the Allman Brothers, Johnny Winter, and ZZ Top. It was in Austin that the eight-song demo was cut at Sonobeat Records (home also of Mariani and Cold Sun), released in 1970 as a private pressing housed in a plain white cover with a Wildfire sticker, each one numbered. The demo album was never sold other than at a small record store in Southern California and it's now one the rarest hard-rock albums from the US. Early Abstractions, Vol. 1 is the follow-up their 2016 release Late Superimpositions (three:four records), and contains recordings made in New York, Western Massachusetts, and Los Angeles -- some old, some older, some relatively new, some borrowed, some blue . . . Around the world in 90 days, it feels like, this album has taken many forms. Originally it was going to be a double album of all older music that I recorded mainly at 76 Charles Street in NY in the '90s, and since then this has evolved to include other stuff from the 2000s. So originally this was going to be titled Early Abstractions (a nod to Harry Smith) and now it is kind of still half that, and other stuff. Still I would like to thank all of the friends who have played on this and helped record it. Like Julian Koster who played the Banjo, did some vocals, and recorded the track here called 'Banjo-Coke' (I 'played' the Coke) at his Grandmother's house, I believe in Long Island. I would also like to thank Shannon Ketch and Adam Langellotti who both played on and helped to record, 'Crackers'. And also thanks to Jenna and Les and Beverly and of course Mark Hanson for playing with us over the years. And I would also like to give a big thanks I guess to Steve Shavel, who we are all missing a lot and hope he reappears, but he played the majestic lap steel slide guitar here on 'Waves', and also did the background talking vocals. Mark Hanson played drums on that track. And maybe someday we will release an album of the Blinded Sphinx music we recorded back then. Also, I would be remiss not to thank Jane F. The source material is the International Language of Dub (Third Eye, 1995), which is a remix album of The Rootsman tracks, hence a remix of a remix, or 'Gauzified as it were. When Jones first met The Rootsman in 1996, several Rootsman albums were passed along by way of musical introduction. Jones promptly responded with several remixes on DAT, his way of saying 'hello', the posthumously titled Fuck Israel being among them. Chronologically, International Language of Dub is the second Rootsman album and is part two of the multi-part The Rootsman/Muslimgauze series on TMPS. Fuck Israel is a cry of anger against the illegal occupation of Palestine and the ongoing economic, political, and social subjugation of Palestinians by the Israelis. Each track is dedicated to an Israeli authority figure directly responsible for the oppression and/or death of Palestinians. Musically the tempo and textures of Fuck Israel varies from song to song. 'Fuck Ariel Sharon pt 1', 'Fuck Benjamin Netanyahu pt 1', 'Fuck Benjamin Netanyahu pt 2' are comprised of upbeat, vigorous breaks with a distinct 'grime' feel. 'Fuck Yitzhak Rabin' is a breaks track that cascades along a river of bass and then plummets into a chasm of drones. Conversely, 'Fuck Ehud Olmert' is a beatless psychedelic vocal loop while 'Fuck Benjamin Ben-Eliezer' is a digression into more abstract textures. By 'Fuck Shimon Peres', organ melodies and Rasta vocals place Muslimgauze in distinct dub reggae territory. 'Fuck Ehud Barak pt 1' and 'Fuck Ehud Barak pt 2' are among the stand-out tracks with their echo-soaked steady horse-trot tempo while electronic ricochets shimmer and pulse throughout. Crowning track, 'Fuck Avignor Lieberman' could pass for a downtempo rhythm-with-flute track if it was not for the over-muscular bass lines that shake the speakers like a tectonic shift. On Fuck Israel, Muslimgauze muscles through a dubstep club, knocking-over hipster trendies in the process. While Veiki's sounds appear firmly grounded in contemporary techno, its pulse is neither based on the 4/4 tradition nor on the breakbeat continuum. The meters employed here are distinctly asymmetric -- i.e. they never add up to binary entities, but are odd-numbered instead. With patterns of 7, 9, or 11, they offer possibilities for dislocating the center of gravity not available to standard rhythmic fare. Thus, this may represent one of the few systematic efforts to move slamming machine techno onto an alternative rhythmic foundation: Real broken beat. Asymmetric/irregular meters are part of the ancient music tradition of the Eastern Mediterranean as well as of South Eastern Europe. The patterns employed here are also present in the traditional music of Bulgaria with which Stefan Goldmann grew up. Citing no other aspects and using no "ethnic" samples, these tracks lead a way to resolving the problem of how to bring the tools and traits of cutting-edge electronic music to alternative traditions of music, or vice versa. Structure over surface. Of course, irregular meters have been visited for structural exploration for Western musicians of different backgrounds, such as Don Ellis, Steve Coleman, or Burnt Friedman & Jaki Liebezeit who have all developed highly distinguished and idiosyncratic approaches in relation to these. Thus, a reduction of the phenomenon to its core and emergence as a clear-cut and reproducible form appeared imminent for at least two decades. The inexplicable surprise though is that despite the ongoing rhythmic differentiation of breakbeat and techno this obvious step seems to have never been taken decisively. The New York City five-piece had found some success playing covers of straight-ahead rock 'n' roll at gigs in the East Village, but tensions within the group were steadily tearing them apart. From its epic, vinyl-side-long title-track down to terse, rhythmic snippets like "A Parsee View," Deceiver set out many of the avenues that Muslimgauze would continue to explore before Jones' death in 1999. Since then, Staalplaat has continued to release the massive back-log of Jones' work, with the nine-disc set Box of Silk and Dogs seeing the release of a third volume of Deceiver. Now, for the first time, that third volume gets a standalone release, paired with the last of the Deceiver tapes. From the brutally curtailed loops and distorted beats of "100 Great Turks" to the hypnotically layered percussion and voice duet of "Opulent Baku Cube," to the oddly funky broken beat of "Maharajaganjinna," volume 3 of Deceiver remains an essential listen, one that time has only rendered more contemporary. On this two-disc reissue it is accompanied by the 11 unused remixes that make up Deceiver vol. 4. The second disc here features several intriguing shorter mixes of "Deceiver" itself that emphasize different sides of the track's sound, as well as several other mixes that take Jones' sound in fascinating new directions. The burbling fourth mix sounds like nothing less than the cousin of some of Astral Social Club's friendlier material, and several tracks such as the seventh mix are so quiet and patient they're the closest Muslimgauze ever came to ambient music. The combination makes for a fitting companion to the original Deceiver and a surprisingly good introduction to Jones' work: volume 3 boasts some stellar examples of one of Jones' primary styles as Muslimgauze, and volume 4 gives the curious listener some idea of just how wide-ranging his work could be. Though tracks can be recognized from parts of the latter, these are alternate versions and where Jebel is a continuous set, each track on Beirut stands alone. This album delves into raqs sharqi/baladi as tempo and density of rhythm shifts from simpler patterns to vigorous cascades of lush, layered tabla that varies from song to song to charm the listener. Few artists can deconstruct and reassemble centuries-old tradition, then edit it into near-seamless perfection while not falling into musical cliché. For instance, "Find Yugoslav Butcher of Muslims" arranges a percussive raqs sharqi ensemble into hip-hop-style beats with raunchy oud, that still sounds fresh and exciting. Another editing marvel is how field recording samples are choreographed with the obsessive detail of a radio drama and brings a strong sense of narrative. While the tablas bring kinetic energy, Arab voices intone religious recitation; call brusquely over megaphones while women and men sing or murmur dimly in the background. Not stopping there, additional ethno-instrumentation such as reeds, lute fragments and chorus' of other Mid-Eastern winds ornament the tracks. "Soufaf in Gulf" transports one into dusty Arab villages and markets (perhaps even in south Lebanon) as the ambient clop-clopping of passing horses and shrill play of children mingle with melodica loops and artfully-placed car horns and megaphone calls. A further detail is the infusion of roots reggae dub elements such as the occasional tight melodica loops, staggered echo-instrumental bits, and then the bass. It is the bass that deserves special mention as it is unlike most Muslimgauze releases. Whereas bass coils like an anaconda through albums like Remixs 1, 2 and 3 and Cobra Head Soup, it powerfully tremors through Beirut Transister like a force of nature. Few Muslimgauze recordings have the bass so powerfully pronounced; melodic, yet massively shifting like tectonic plates. A case in point is "Egyptian Song Contest," where a short Arabic phrase prefaces provocative metallic hand drum textures, relentless earthquake bass and screeching shortwave radio feedback. The masters for Beirut Transister were submitted in 1998, at the zenith of the late Bryn Jones' technical skill where he no longer was influenced by styles so much as "owning" and then and spawning his own. Abu Dub Step Bryn Jones, father of dubstep, is still the unparalleled master and this is one of the summits. One of the most sought-after progressive folk-rock albums from the UK. Caedmon -- a five-piece student band in the '70s -- recorded this album to mark their farewell concert in early 1978, before they went their separate ways after university. They had literally no idea of the myths, rumors, and tales that would embellish (and sometimes distort) the musical arc traced by this album in the decades to come. The album contains twelve songs. Ten were written by the band. One was based on an ancient text by seventh century poet Caedmon. And the final track was a traditional gospel song. Angela Naylor's lead vocals are supported by close harmony male vocals throughout. Acoustic guitars, mandolin, and cello jostle with electric guitar, keyboards, percussion, and bass. The resultant blend can only be described as eclectic, conjuring a slightly bizarre mix of folk ballad, bossa-nova, and psychedelic jazz and funk. Little did they know that this would be described as acid-folk in years to come. Unusual time signatures, tight arrangements, improbable instrumentation, oblique and poetic stories tackling spirituality, distorted fuzz guitar, and the odd recorder solo. 1978 was the era of punk. Caedmon adopted a self-produced approach and recorded their farewell to fans in Barclay Towers Studio in Edinburgh, an attic flat, patronized by the Rezillos, among others. Essentially each song was recorded "live" in two or three takes on a four-track tape machine, with occasional overdubs. During the pressing, a call from the pressing plant informed the band that they had too much music recorded to fit on a 33rpm 12" vinyl. A quick decision resulted in two tracks being moved across to a 45rpm 7" single. The band was unsigned, boasted a small fan-base (mostly in Scotland), only occasionally played south of the border (notably at a disastrous gig at the Greenbelt Festival in 1977), enjoyed some success at the Edinburgh Fringe. Their niche fame came twenty years later. Both a re-release of the original album on CD by Kissing Spell Records, and a burgeoning world-wide vinyl collectors market made possible by the internet led to feverish demand for copies of the original vinyl of 1978. Lazhareem Ul Leper by Muslimgauze certainly qualifies for its range of percussion instruments, atypical electronics, and skillful de-construction of ethno-traditional music. In turn, said music is re-assembled with urban styling and a technical deftness akin to the way a Shao-Lin monk wields weapons. The Staalplaat crew think this among the more unusual of Muslimgauze works, and fans undoubtedly will think it both refreshing and as striking now as when first committed to DAT. Muslimgauze enthusiasts may recognize sounds from Izlamaphobia (1995) on the odd track as they were made roughly at the same time, only Lazhareem is arranged differently and with more unique elements to form a stand-alone album. Stylistically, Lazhareem straddles the line between ethno-electro releases like Silknoose for its pervasive use of Indo-Pak music melded with Persian and Mid-East; along with more industrial releases like Izlamaphobia and Blue Mosque for its occasionally tight, near-mechanical loops. Fans will be pleased to notice never-before-heard (to this listener, at least) percussive textures layered into lush, rhythmic harmonies punctuated by chimes on track five. Track ten is also singular for the way it opens with a clamor, not unlike a knocked-over box of tin cans one moment, the next, this seemingly dissonant noise is harnessed and re-edited into a well-crafted rhythm track. Track six flaunts music production standards by rolling three or four tracks into one continuous 20-minute piece, vintage Bryn Jones. Yet another stand-out work is track seven, a piece that is more than its assemblage of rhythms and counter-rhythms and fused together, an underlying pulse takes possession of the track and ultimately the listener. Since 1995, masters for Lazhareem Ul Leper languished in Staalplaat vaults when it should have been put out for immediate appreciation by fans. In a series of duets and trios, guitarist David Grubbs, saxophonist Mats Gustafsson, and trumpeter Rob Mazurek met headlong for the first time, converging not only their acoustic and electric instruments, but at times submerging themselves in a tangle of electronics, then emerging into shamanic bell-shaking chant or chest-rattling howl. Ranging from extreme noise to delicate texture (even a rare solo by Gustafsson on his first instrument, the flute), the CD's five tracks mark the beginning of a new group, named -- the same as the record -- after the venue at which they were recorded, the venerable Underflow Record Shop and Art Gallery in Athens, Greece. The reactions were overwhelming and the music goes in many directions. Therefore, Staalplaat present (with pride!) a double CD. And that circumstance is why the fascinating oddity Mohammad Ali Jinnah exists. Staalplaat has previously released, in 2002, the Muslimgauze album Sarin Israel Nes Ziona (2002). While continuing to sort through and release the material Jones left behind with his death in 1999, the Mohammad Ali Jinnah tape was found to have significant overlap with that now out of print album, but only to a certain extent. Six of the 15 tracks on Mohammad Ali Jinnah match up with material from the earlier tape (which included 20 tracks), but when Jones resubmitted this tape he also included extended mixes of four of the tracks from the original album ("Imam Fainted", "Yousif Water Pipe Habit", "Opulent Maghrebi Meze", and "Indo Muslem Atlas") as well as five entirely new compositions. The result is a fascinating re-setting of some of the music from that under-heard release. Whether Jones preferred one arrangement to the other is sadly lost information, but listeners now can appreciate a wholly new experience with the material herein, even if some of the material itself has been previously released. And the new tracks are fascinating, even by Jones's usual standards, whether they're the grinding, obsessively focused percussion workouts, "For Larger Iran" and "Burnt Pages Of Ali Jinnah Koran", or the cryptically distant likes of "Cold Turkey". Paired with classic tracks like the bass-distorted, Middle Eastern boom bap of "Kurds Eye View" and the furtively head-nodding "Zahir Din, Cabdriver Of Zind", the result is a release unlike anything else in Jones's discography.
