Terry Fox (1943, Seattle-2008, Cologne) was one of the leading pioneers of American body art and conceptual art. He became famous in the 70s with performances and installations, which took their point of origin in the transformative processes of materials, and in which he used his own body as a medium for exploring often extreme psychological and physical experiences. With his lifelong exploration of sound and space, Terry Fox was also one of the pioneers of contemporary sound art. Terry Fox belongs to those artists of the 60s and 70s who radically rejected traditional art forms and sought new forms of artistic expressions. In numerous installations, performances, and street events he directed attention to everyday phenomena and aspects of social existence. He researched unknown or little regarded aspects of energy in substances and materials, most especially sound and vibration. Since the 80s Terry Fox composed objects, language, acoustic, and process-oriented events into multilayered images in space and time. In his later years, quiet sounds at the limit of audibility became more and more prominent. This collection of Terry Foxs AudioWorks was published in 1983, during the time he lived in Florence, by Maurizio Nannucci in the Recorthings series of audio cassettes on the Exit & Exempla label. Recorthings is a record label linked to the activities of Zona non-profit art space (1974/1985) and to the broadcasting program Zonaradio (1981/1983).: - Song Cycle.

Original unplayed copies of 1983 release.

"Luc Marianni’s 3rd album - whose title translates to Journey Towards Harmony - was first issued in 1983 on the experimental artist’s Parisian label, Upon Tyne, alongside his other output with Rock Critics and Jean-François Papin around that same era. This reclusive french composer paved the underground music history with a handful of mind-blowing LPs but still managed to surprisingly fall under the radar. Most famous for his collaboration with Pataphonie's André Viaud and its leftfield experimental jazz antics (Nurse With Wound's list!), Luc Marianni released Souvenirs du Futur (also available while stock lasts) on Pataphonie's Fééri Music label, his first solo LP that pushed the envelope towards more electronic fields. Originally influenced by Michel Polnareff, Faust and Pink Floyd, he soon went far away, trying to make the guitar sound like anything but a guitar, which eventually led to electronics. Firmly stuck in the studio, Marianni never really performed live, which might have helped to surround him with mystery, even though he never ceased to give all he had to music, be it alone or with Jean-François Papin for his Rock Critics improv band (he actually was a rock critic and published many fanzines)". -Rush Hour

"French artist Luc Marianni has a past as a journalist and was a one time member of the band Rock Critics. Based on field recordings made by the prolific Room40 owner that were subtly but decisively altered with electroacoustic techniques through the German improv legend, these two long-form pieces blur the lines between acoustic ecology and aesthetic interventions, concrete local sound worlds and boundary-defying art. They put a focus on our relationship with nature as listeners as much as they call into question where nature ends and human perception begins. They are deeply confusing, disorienting perhaps, in the most beautiful ways. English recorded the material that form the basis of the duo's Hallow Ground debut on two different field trips. One led him from the Western coast to the Pilbara region in the North of the country called Australia, the other to the central desert into the lands of the Arrernte people. When recording the soundscapes, the artist put a focus on the residues of failed colonial aspirations. "The buildings and objects that remain from the failed cattle pastures and other endeavors create uneasy sound worlds of their own," English says of the regions that are also places of extraction, especially the heavily mined Pilbara. "There is a distant drone of industry in even the most remote of places; an unsettled sense of heavy breath on the land." He brought home a document of natural reclamation in time. The rich source material was then given to Dafeldecker. Spatializing the recordings with transducers applied to different surfaces such as wood, stretched animal skin, glass, or metal surfaces and also re-recording parts of the recordings, he created discrete events that were inserted into, or rather enmeshed with English's recordings. There is certainly a direct line from Wreck Small Speakers On Expensive Stereos, through the Dead C, and to Gate. I think I was also inspired by listening to [infamous and tragically short-lived early 1980s band] the Double Happys, and remembering their performances as a duo with the drum machine. There was such utter chaos and anarchy during their sets, with a desire to represent punk rock at its nascent truth, I wanted to see if it was possible to re-imagine that feeling. I was possibly also listening to the Stooges and MC5." - Michael Morley.
"Post-punk (originally called new musick) is a broad musical genre that emerged in 1977 in the wake of punk rock. He lifts his poems off the page, delivering them through rhythmic performances; paintings, prints, and installations; and in LPs, mixed with music. Among his most iconic works is his “Dial-A-Poem” project (begun 1968), in which a telephone number leads to short readings by a host of writers, artists, and activists, among them Allen Ginsburg and John Cage. Giorno forged his art in 1960s New York, and was associated with numerous important figures from that period, including Andy Warhol, the Beat writers, and avant-garde performers—who all influenced his generous, democratic work. Describing his relationship with his audience, he states: “I'm giving out energy, and I'm holding up a mirror to their minds. It's not me they're looking at—it's into their own minds. That's what a great poem is.” - John Giorno/Artsy

Tracklist:

A1 – William S. Burroughs and Brion Gysin. Through GPS Giorno has championned a kind of DIY spoken word poetry embarking cut-ups, performance, rock guitar and electronic rhythms. If Burroughs foundness for tape recorder and tape splicing delights is well known, his relationship to rock appears a bit cynical and un-sincere. Giorno, on the other hand, was part of that Downtown scene where so many things had been happening since the 1960s – from Cage and Rauschenberg to No Wave frenzy. But chances are he envisionned rock music as a suitable medium for his poetry in the same way he used telephone to spread his poems. There’s pragmatism at work here. Some of the guests musicians on Glenn Branca‘s track appeared on his monumental ‘The Ascension’ LP on 99 Records published the year before (1981): Stephan Wischerth, David Rosenbloom, Ned Sublette and Lee Ranaldo. I more or less expected monolithic guitar walls, but this soundtrack to a dance performance is quite varied and structured into various moments, including sudden rhythm changes (at 8:15), quiet guitar feedback drones (at 11;30) alternating with fierce guitar parts, while drums are a prominent feature throughout. The whole track is very well conceived and entertaining from start to finish. The John Giorno side has 2 tracks of poetry reading along heavy beats. The poems are deliberately matter-of-fact and delivered in the typical Giorno high pitched voice. It was through Mike Waugh's friendship with Elevators drummer John Ike Walton that Billy Miller and the band hooked up with the local label/studio Sonobeat, who expressed interest in recording an album with the intention to shop it to a major label: thus, the now-legendary Cold Sun album was born. The band, driven by Miller's strange electrified autoharp sounds plus the massive fuzz guitar of McGarrigle, dressed with feedback and futuristic lyrics, laid down several tracks in between rehearsals at Miller's house on Castle Hill (west Austin). Never released at the time, the Cold Sun album languished in oblivion and the musicians moved on to other things. It wasn't until 1990 that the Cold Sun album was finally released on vinyl by the Rockadelic label (in a tiny edition of 300 copies), followed by a new edition on German label World In Sound in 2008, now out of print. Giménez (Zaragoza, Spain, 1955 - 2013) remains one of the great undiscovered Spanish composers. In the early 1970s he formed part of the group Estudio de Música Electrónica together with Luis Fatás, M. Medalón and Luis Colomer, through which they sought to approach music from other disciplines. Influenced by concrete music or composers such as Stockhausen, they also tried to bring an intellectual dimension to their work by making use of references from the new French critique or the manifesto of the composer Carles Santos.

Later, with the aim of clarifying his ideas outside of music, Giménez spent two years in Paris studying philosophy, sociology and literature, approaching professors such as Deleuze, Foucault and Lacan, who were decisive for the later intellectual development of his work. On his return to Spain he decided to settle in Logroño in the heart of a hippie community where he formed part of the group Casablanca. Founded in 1977, the band was composed by more than seven members and generally leaned more towards progressive rock, but with numerous influences ranging from salsa to jazz, along with the work of composers such as La Monte Young or Pierre Schaeffer and groups like Gong or Hawkwind.

After the dissolution of the band and a period in which he decide to distance himself from making music, Pablo A. Giménez regained interest when he was invited to compose the soundtrack for an amateur film. As a result of this episode, having already delved into theoretical issues such as structural anthropology and made use of resources such as the automatisms of the surrealists, his interest in sound creation returned. With magnetic tape as a support, his first works are characterised by the use of simple elements and cheap machines, with the exception of the saxophone. An approach which was certainly closer to a lack of means rather than to a specific sound aesthetic decision.

This release reunites Pablo A. It refuses to exist within boundaries, forcing us to ponder its conceptual basis at the same time we dig the way it sounds. William here plays doson ngoni, dudek, and flutes of bamboo, cedar and walnut. Cooper-Moore on his hand-crafted ashimba and harp; Hamid Drake on frame drum and drum kit. William Parker's music -- in its vast scope and range of form -- has been an elemental nutrient of countless listeners lives for nigh on five decades. William's words -- whether published on page or spoken from the stage -- are part of that music. They speak on the beauty of life itself, amplifying the light of life ever-present, even in exceptionally difficult circumstance. As his first artistic expression, Parker began writing as a young person growing up in the South Bronx projects, presenting an alternate perception of often bleak surroundings and living conditions in the neighborhood. This early awareness that there was another way of being in the world, has suffused his development into a singularly generous artist and human being.
