Eight years after writing her first songs and dropping out of college to pursue her passion as a street musician, Carol was still following the love, making music and magic as she roamed free up and down the California coastline. The harp that BOBBY BROWN gave her back in 1971 was still her main axe whenever she played, and the primary instrument she used on her debut album Love Has Made Me Stronger. That record had been self-produced, and Carol sold copies wherever she played, but for the production of Takin The Time, Bobby Brown stepped into the producers role. He had already produced two incredible albums for himself (The Enlightening Beam of Axonda and Bobby Brown Live) and in the studio, he succeeded in marrying his sound to Carols, producing a sleek, light vibe that conveyed all the hope and joy that Carols songs held within themselves. Carol played with a band for the first half of the record, while the other half embraced the more familiar solo setting that her audience knew and loved. The weapons of choice are analogue synthesizers and the approach is slowly unfolding drones and drifting veils of sound that part and close across the listeners third ear like storms on the surface of Jupiter. K-Group is Paul Toohey, previously of noted NZ geological drone ensemble Surface of the Earth, who also has a solo album under this name on Corpus Hermeticum. Omit is Clinton Williams, who has also recorded for that notorious NZ un-easy listening label, as well as extensively on his own Deep Skin imprint. During 2000 and 2001, having failed to bring down the global economy with their now-forgotten Y2K scam [remember Y2K? - I thought not], this pair of Hidden Masters turned their efforts towards late-night kitchen jam sessions during their holiday moments. In these each would fire up an antiquated analogue synth and the resulting aural collisions would be recorded on a handy hard drive, then tweaked, inverted, eqd and edited to produce the immaculate slabs of sound contained within the tiny grooves of this ludicrously out-dated analogue sound-reproducing format. These seven tracks simulate the calm of the newly sedated patient about to undergo a surgical procedure, just as he or she is starting to slip into unconsciousness. You can listen, but just when you think youre hearing something, you realise that 12 hours have gone by and you have a new and inexplicable scar on some unlikely part of your anatomy. Too late you realise that the sound you can hear at the very edge of audition is not this recording, but the sound of forty metal robotic insects starting to eat their way out through your still-sedated navel. Waking with a start in time to flip the album over on your turntable, you notice that subsonic frequencies have begun to rearrange the contents of your mantlepiece into a veritable Morris Dance of inanimate objects, when you thought the audio had not yet begun to play back. A vestigial bass throb starts up in the back of your cranium, as very slow-moving if not actually stationary spacecraft begin to land in the garden. Three days later they are still hovering as the seventh and final track of thr album begins to play, and infinitesimally subtle stereo effects start panning in impossible permutations audible only between your shoulder blades.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e  \u003c\/span\u003eApparent suspension of time, delirious interludes, interference with the basic laws of physics, all of these effects are possible results of listening to the beautifully poised, finely polished and unutterably beautiful sounds contained in this simultaneously forbidding and inviting artifact. Both K-Group and Omit have been longtime aQuarius favorites from the New Zealand experimental noise scene; but unfortunately, theyve been pretty quiet in their respective outputs during the past couple of years. K-Group is the solo project for Paul Toohey, who has also worked in the (defunct?) Surface Of The Earth, both of which centered around low-frequency tectonic drones coaxed from abused amplifiers. Clinton Williams has taken up the Omit moniker for his creepy, tape loop compositions loaded with bleak sci-fi \/ psychotic imagery. This collaboration between Williams and Toohey is actually their second, if you count a 7\" which came out ages ago. In running Williams battery of analog synths through Tooheys cabinets, theyve constructed an eerie album of deep rumblings that are on par with anything that Coleclough, Koner, or Troum have managed to release. When an ounce too much pressure could make your veins cave inwards. At times like these, Reiko Kudos previous solo album (\"Fire inside my hat\", Org Records, 1997) has always been my balm of choice. A gauze-thin collection of songs with minimal piano accompaniment, sung in a voice half between a child and a deeply hesitant angel...  For those who would rather trust a history lesson than their own senses, Reiko Omura, as she was known then, first came to light on the Tokyo underground in the late seventies and early eighties. She was part of the Minor circle (which also gave birth to Fushitsusha, High Rise, Kosokuya, Gaseneta and many others) of musical obsessives exploring new and highly personal collisions of noise, improv, rock. Reikos contribution was via groups like Worst Noise and Noise. The latters sole release, \"Tenno\", saw her trumpet and voice meeting the Bach-doom organ and drums of influential scenester Tori Kudo in a totally unique monument to no-wave noise depression. She later married Kudo, appearing occasionally with his avant-pop Christo-mystic idiot-savant group Maher Shalal Hash Baz, but releasing nothing under her own name until the Org disk in the late nineties.  Rice field...\" sees Reiko revisiting the pattern of short songs mostly based around one-finger piano motifs, so structurally simple as to be virtually transparent. This time additional flashes of sensitive instrumental colour are added by husband Tori and various members of the Puka-Puka Brians on wavering backing vocals, violin, guitar, percussion, neuphonium and percussion. The music treads a sure and private path between a perfect childlike naivete and the amateur aesthetic that has long been Toris goal (he has spent twenty years arriving at a point of psychedelic mastery where he sounds like he bought his first guitar yesterday). Reikos songs and vocals are the weakly pulsing centrepoint though. She sings of life, dying flowers, love, and nursing home residents with the unforced naturalness of a mother alone with her child, a bird in the forest, her pellucid melodies seemingly accidental. It is nothing short of heart-stoppingly gorgeous. And as an honest-to-god example of happiness glimpsed through the quotidian, artistic perfection all the more perfect for not being striven for, you couldnt wish for anything more. Kaneko is known, if at all, as leader of Kosokuya, one of the most idiosyncratic and least appreciated rock groups in Tokyo. The group have been in existence since the late seventies, pounding out a unique take on the space-rock idiom that sucked crushing chords and spiralling solos into the heart of blank, bleak emptiness. Those who purchased the recent Pandit Pran Nath set will find much to enjoy here. Hafizullah Khan, who passed away in 2002, was a virtuoso of the sarangi. The sarangi is India's premier fiddle instrument; to most western ears it probably most resembles the violin. It is comprised of a solid wood body, three main playing strings, and 35-40 sympathetic strings. There are no frets of fingerboards, the strings hover over the body of the instrument and the performer changes the pitch by sliding his or her fingernails along the strings. It has an absolutely uncanny ability to imitate the sound of the human voice -- indeed most sarangi masters are also vocalists, as was Hafizullah Khan.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe sarangi is extremely difficult to play and has been in decline as a popular instrument for some time, so we are very blessed to be offered this historic recording. Hafizullah Khan was the hereditary head of the Kirana Gharana school of North Indian classical music. He began learning his craft at a young age from his renowned father and uncle, and was a staff artist for many years at the prestigious All India Radio. In a recent online interview between La Monte Young and Frank J. Oteri, Young characterizes members of the Kirana school as priding themselves on the knowledge of Raga and Feeling. Hafizullah Khansahib's mother, Naseera Begum or Moodan, recently passed away in Delhi in February 2003. At Wahid Khan's death in 1949, Hafizullah Khansahib was sent to live and study with his uncle, Ustad Abdul Habib Khan. He received exceedingly rigorous training: during the day he was free to fly kites and play with other children, but at night he was required to do riaz (practice) from 10pm to 4am. Kelleys interests, however, span all varieties of sound arrangement, and on I dont want to live forever\" he shows his considerable merits as a composer of solo musique concrete.\\r\\nA co-release between Gameboy and the newly formed Little Enjoyer, this is Kelleys third solo release. For this recording he takes as source material recordings from minidisc and microcassette made during a tour with Mike Bullock and edits them into a single 35+ minute composition. The results are unlike anything Kelley has done before: rigorous, methodical tape-collage, in turns pensive and aggressive, brittle and supple. The record becomes a revolving exploration of a set of atmospherics, rigidly set into a rusty frame of tape-hiss, fragments emerging from the dreams of a long convalescence. Recorded in between 1965s Spider Blues and 1969s Running, Jumping, Standing Still (with Willie Murphy, both released on Elektra), Koerner is captured here live and unaccompanied at The Ash Grove in Los Angeles, bringing to light an exciting and previously-undocumented period in the career of Spider John. The excellent recording captures Koerner at the absolute peak of his guitar-playing powers. Rounding out this crucial slab of wax are two songs recorded in 1966 in New York City, previously only available on an elusive British single. Accompanied by Al Kooper on guitar, Felix Pappalardi on bass, and Roy Blumenfeld on drums, Wont You Give Me Some Love\" and \"Dont Stop\" (the latter with Tony Glover on harp) represent Koerners first, brief excursion into rock and roll terrain. The results sound not entirely dissimilar to Dylans Highway 61 period material -- not surprising, given Koopers presence.
