Thats a shame because their work owes much more to the weird and subtle minutiae of sound than any sort of bombast\"-the same goes for The Shield That Pierces the Earth. Dylan has described Shield as his \"folk\" record (theres some sort of pun to be made with Dylan and folk no doubt), probably because he is using more plucked guitar (cf. \"Clays Festering Lungs\") and less tape collage than his past recordings with Prick Decay. But theres very little in terms of structure or melody that might remind the listener of \"folk\" per se. If anything, the music that this bears the most resemblance to is that of Southeast Asia, though more in the way of the experimentation of the Sun City Girls or Climax Golden Twins than anything that might be termed \"authentic.\" As Temp Webber puts it in the sleeve notes, this is more reminiscent of \"folk music for insects\" than anything else: mixed in with the guitar plucking and keyboard tones are alien clicks and squeaks and other audio detritus. The layered but careful instrumentation on tracks like the epic Holy Letters\" and \"Troll\" backs the alternately plain-spoken and crooning vocals perfectly. Odd touches like snatches of throat singing and bowed vibraphone leap out of the mix at just the right time. There are overt references to the blues (the first track is an oblique cover of \"Cold Was The Ground\") - but other than the occassional slide guitar touch, the connection is overwhelmingly in the timeless feeling and atmosphere. I can hardly think of anything else like \"Holy Letters,\" but suffice to say if you like Richard Youngs, Popol Vuh, Six Organs of Admittance, Tim Buckley, acid-folk, japanese underground - anything like that - this is an essential purchase. Really, Im not doing it justice.\\r\\nHoly Letters was self-released by Hiro in 1993\/1994 or so, primarily to be given away to friends. A handful of copies were sold via Tokyos Modern Music\/PSF operation in Japan and by Forced Exposure in the US, but other than that, it disappeared completely. The copies we have are from Hiroyukis original numbered pressing. The CD is accompanied by a two song 7\" and housed in a beautiful oversized color gatefold sleeve.\\r\\nHiroyuki Usuis name pops up in several intriguing places in the apparently still underdocumented Japanese underground lexicon. Well-known figures like Nick Cave (The Boys Next Door, The Birthday Party) and Ollie Olsen (Whirlywirld) would often come by to listen to borrow records, but the Primitive Calculators were always outsiders in Melbournes punk scene.A move to Fitzroy in 1978 helped Primitive Calculators cement their own identity and develop a network of likeminded friends. The band set up a series of gigs called Little Band nights, where up to ten hastily-formed bands, with names like Too Fat To Fit Through The Door and Thrush \u0026amp; The Cunts, would play sets of fifteen minutes each. Pressed with plain black labels and stark monochrome sleeve, the single introduced many to the impassioned, atonal, electronic chaos that was the Primitive Calculators trademark, and it has gone on to become a highly collectable classic of Australian post-punk.The following year the band attempted to relocate to London, but seeing how difficult life was for fellow expats the Birthday Party and Whirlywirld, hey decided instead to take an indefinite break. A 1979 live recording of a gig supporting The Boys Next Door turned out to be the Primitive Calculators swansong. Released by friend and supporter Alan Bamford in the early 1980s, Primitive Calculators is a crucial document of a band whose originality, power and humorously belligerent Australian mindset has never since been duplicated.But the story didnt end there, as the Primitive Calculators had an unexpected renaissance in 1986, when filmmaker Richard Lowenstein included them in his feature Dogs In Space (starring a young Michael Hutchence). The Primitive Calculators reformed to appear in the movie and recorded their song -جø¬-??Pumping Ugly Muscle-جø¬-?-جø¬- for the soundtrack (the song was also released as a 12-جø¬-?-جø¬- with some original late 70s recordings on the B-side).The Primitive Calculators revival continued a good fifteen years later when Chapter Music released the pioneering Cant Stop It! compilation CD of Australian late 70s\/early 80s post-punk.
