So fine. The stage was set for some serious 8-year-old dating action but I got snaked by this lame dude named Shawn Murphy who won Brandys eye by shuffling baseball cards faster & being a little crazier on his four-wheel green machine. It killed me ... all summer I tried to get faster on the cards & upstage everyone on the street big wheel scene, but alas, no Salem. She moved to Iowa, still think of her when that Im in love with the sea" song comes on. Fucking Shawn....
Fast forward 21 years ... in the game of pure electronic hard-core insanity, Wolf Eyes hear rumors of this RI band of PCP chair-throwing HC yahoos who hold the crown on violence & sonic terror. Fuck that. We thought we were the end of the well in electronic napalm. This Black Dice band wanted to play in Detroit ... no one will do it. Fear of violence/death threats/general horror left them with no gig. "Why would I wanna book a band who is gonna beat up my friends?" was the local consensus. So BD get a Monday gig at Club Olson/my basement in quiet Ferndale, home to a handful of whacked out electronic misfit gigs. Neighbors of the crib being left side= young couple / right side = quiet lesbian couple with child. My cell rings nonstop days before the gig with crazed young HC fiends asking if the gig is true. I start to get nervous, then I hear they need like 30,000 watts for their gig. What the?
Gig day/come home from my office job & the Dice dudes are waiting for me. These are the horrible terror junkies who stab people when they play? All I see is smiles, loafers, Bjorn playing with a kid, and starry-eyed-vacant-brain Danny. Weird. Then they load in; mounds of amplifiers, mounds. The whole basement looking like Iron Maiden was gonna play. Wolf Eyes jams, we think it is intense, whatever. Then they play ... starting with solo recorder and then / WHOA /the most violent, insane, Hiroshima tidal roar of basement sonic terror EVER. EVER. We never heard or witnessed anything so massive. We have seen the Merzbows, the Skin Crimes, the Gravitars, Youth In Asia, whatever.. This was in a totally different sound universe where the air is filled with concrete. It was louder in the street than it was in the basement black hole of sound. Imagine Black Dice playing in your fucking basement on a Monday night! Jesus. No neighbor complaints. Changed our view on sound/terror/attack. This was our challenge; meet this Dice volume unholiness on the same sonic field before Shawn Murphy & his Outlaw band does it better. Dudes were so cool two of them even slept in the basement. Awesome.
So we became best friends. Nate called me at work the next morning & said "we are gonna do a record together" I laughed ... that would rule...
So fast forward another two years. Here is it is. Recorded at a subterranean Chinatown studio in two days. Tons of jacked EQ, no space, cases of brew, clouds of smoke, Guinness record for most times "Dude" was said. We met on equal ground here. Total respect/the record really sounds like the shadow of each band. It was a blast. Play it on 16 rpm in a closet and jam along with the bones of an enemy. Packaged as a parody of the releases from Smithsonian/Folkways, this document of Prophets dictations offers insight more into the Churchs antagonism toward mainstream society than to her claims to be the messenger for the "Ascended Masters": Christ, Buddha, Hercules, Guinevere, Shiva, Pope John XXIII and K-17 (the code name for the head of the Cosmic Secret Service - the spiritual afterlife is in need of policing too). As bizarre as CUTs doctrines are, the dictations as terrifyingly good examples of mind control at work: ultra-conservative politics thinly veiled as prophecy, filled with stereotypical denunciations of rock music. Yet throughout these recordings, Prophet and her acolytes belt forth piercing, glossalaliac vocalizations, coming over like a cross between a Southern auctioneer and La Monte Young. To the battered souls who had hoped for inner peace or transcendence from CUT, these intonations were obviously meant to be received as the spiritualist "proof" of Prophets power. Originally released by Australian label Mighty I AM Presence in the late 90s in three editions of 25 copies each (on polyurethane lathe-cut 8-inch records), these early, outrageously expensive copies caused their share of controversy and were unofficially banned in Japan. Several traditionally fearless Japanese collectors returned the records unplayed (for fear that its mere presence in their houses could get them in trouble). One collectors wife reportedly left him and filed for divorce, no questions asked, after finding a copy on his shelves. With the terror of the tragic gas attack fresh in the Japanese publics minds, packages containing Aum music mailed from Banjawarn Station in Western Australia-where the cult had previously acquired mining-exploration licenses so they could conduct legal searches for uranium deposits-were enough for one Japanese importer to contact the police, which resulted in a visit to the Mighty I AM Presence offices by a delegation comprised of local Australian constabulary, customs officials, and two Japanese newspaper reporters, all of whom made it clear not to send any more copies of the record to Japan. When examined and compared to commercially available recordings, the musical aspirations of mass murderers and cult leaders (see, for example, Charles Manson and David Koresh, respectively) often seem first and foremost wildly out of step with the times, but also naive, simplistic and eerily innocent. "Lord Deaths Counting Song" and "Sonshis March" follow this model; they are reminiscent of some wispy, New-Age karaoke, maybe with a nod to the music bed for a nightmarishly feel-good airline commercial. The pretty, easy-to-grasp jingles that edu-tainers such as Mr. Rogers deploy on pre-school children sound like a Wagner opera in comparison. There have been others that are somewhat like it, or are related to it, in shape, or in style, but they are not it. This alone is it. It is Space Chanteys. Recorded live, back in October 100, the ensemble here has run through all of Matts pockets on many occasions. Some were/are part of the Tower Recordings collective. Others are associated with the MVEE Medicine Show. Each of them has fingered keys and touched lint that has deep and private resonance in the Valentinian flow. They take a deep collective breath here and release it slowly, like a sigh trapped in the highest tower of Greasers Palace. And its a gasser. Those enlightened people who are aware of his recordings, have a tendency to think of Matts music as part of the American volk tradition. And, indeed, a portion of it does reside there. But as with so many of the interesting inventions inside out-culture currency, the soul of this volk music emerged from synchretic collisions between psychedelic rock and avant garde jazz and country blues and trance-drone-minimalism as well as a primitive form of volk-proper. In these each would fire up an antiquated analogue synth and the resulting aural collisions would be recorded on a handy hard drive, then tweaked, inverted, eqd and edited to produce the immaculate slabs of sound contained within the tiny grooves of this ludicrously out-dated analogue sound-reproducing format. These seven tracks simulate the calm of the newly sedated patient about to undergo a surgical procedure, just as he or she is starting to slip into unconsciousness. K-Group is the solo project for Paul Toohey, who has also worked in the (defunct?) Surface Of The Earth, both of which centered around low-frequency tectonic drones coaxed from abused amplifiers. Clinton Williams has taken up the Omit moniker for his creepy, tape loop compositions loaded with bleak sci-fi / psychotic imagery. This collaboration between Williams and Toohey is actually their second, if you count a 7" which came out ages ago. In running Williams battery of analog synths through Tooheys cabinets, theyve constructed an eerie album of deep rumblings that are on par with anything that Coleclough, Koner, or Troum have managed to release. As the K-Group / Omit drones ripple with a gritty amplifier buzz often lacking in the driftwork of those aforementioned artists, "Storage" pulses with a subterranean heaviness, pushing this closer towards the Earth / SUNNO))) terrain. A really wonderful album!!!" - Aquarius.

More scorched live sessions from these Japanese legends. In response to the invitation to make a work for radio I decided to produce all the sound-materials while in Vienna, drawing upon a direct relationship to the city and my experience there. This process consisted of primarily two activities: firstly, amplifying pre-recorded sounds of "crowds" from various events and functions in public spaces in Vienna, and re-recording them--in essence, overlaying public spaces and public crowds on top of each other and highlighting the "multiplicity" of overheard voices, and through this, how language becomes abstracted when it is situated against public space; secondly, taking a series of walks around Vienna with contact microphones taped to the bottoms of my shoes. What resulted from these walks was a kind of sonic residue of the meeting between body and space, between private experience and public environment, underscoring how as an individual one is always part of a greater situation." "Pillow Talking"(in collaboration with l. chasse): This work was produced as a parallel performance to a concert by John Hudak at 7hz, San Francisco, September 2000. The parallel performance occurred through recording Hudaks own performance by placing contact microphones on a glass floor from a mezzanine within the performance space. In addition, a second contact microphone was mounted on a metal cooking funnel which I then placed inside my mouth. In essence, the final work is a combination of Hudaks performance and the subsequent "translation" of it as recorded through the microphones. This "translation" is in turn mediated through the architectural structure of the performance space, the metal funnel and through the cavity of my mouth. The band has been around for quite some time; I originally was under the impression they formed around 1984, but was recently informed that an edition featuring Nanjo and Narita from High Rise existed going back to the late 70s!?. Either way, theyve always been pretty lo-profile, but this CD at least shines a bit of light on their extended, heavy guitar sound. An early press release for the bands describes them well: The band name Kousokuya means a ray night. Since 1984 they have been playing their own high volume heavy driven avant-garde psychedelic music. Kaneko, he always plays guitar with full of feedback. One of the outstanding guitar players in the underground scene. No one can play guitar like him. Mick, she plays bass and is also main vocalist. Sometimes solo acoustic, sometimes with percussion, electric slide guitar or violin accompaniment, he sings with one of the most electrifying post-Tim Buckley vocal chords ever heard, and his concept of multiphonic non-traditional folk music with apocalyptic come-down power-appeal has finally been documented with this long overdue release. This new twelve-inch is entitled "Vacation", and here Excepter have perhaps crafted a treatise on nothing less than the uncomfortable aspects of having to leave oneshome.
Or they may well have been channeling the soundtrack to a particularly bizarre road trip I once went on involving an Indian burial ground, a cross eyed woman Xeroxing chain letters at a supermarket, and an extremely sadistic alligator farm outside of Hot Springs, Arkansas where I witnessed a stuffed Fiji Merman. Unease indeed. But of course, like on any worthy and good vacation, once youve become used to new unsettling sensations like foot blisters and sunburn you realize how sublime the landscape is. And sublimity is what Excepter trades in spades.
Side-one positions the moment where you have trouble getting your bearings, trouble putting your surroundings into perspective. The rhythms are all displaced, their center of gravity slackened by synths squiggling all willy-nilly looking for something to latch onto. Side-two, "Forget Me," is where everything comes into focus -- like a photograph that you can spend some time with to chart your inner progress. This track could be Excepters pop moment, their breezy road trip down the Autobahn (and here the Kraut reference is especially apt). I finally managed to locate Mr. Anderzén in the middle of an arctic desert. He sat there cross legged, eyes closed, calm as if on top of a mountain or in the bottom of the sea. No trees nor any other objects apart from ourselves interrupted the plain white landscape. Sun dragged itself slowly over the horizon. The air was still. My retreat will soon be over. His husky voice seemed to emerge from the field of snow itself. I didnt see his lips moving. As I asked about the last nine months he had been away he mumbled something about contemplation. Remember what Cocteau wrote in Opium about revealing the essence of plants? - I have gained sights of that different kind of speed of vegetation and I have heard the screams of plants he talked about. After six long days of silence spent mostly eating drought reindeers meat Mr A. talked again: I had this strangest of dreams. There was no space, no people, no traces of action, just this plasmoid machine out of which erupted sounds. And then as I was receiving those aural secretions of an ultra physical automaton from the seventh uppermost world, I woke up due to a butterfly itching in my ear. There I was all covered with sweat, heart beating furiously, yet the ear was empty. It took a long time to be able to sleep after that night.
