So fine. The stage was set for some serious 8-year-old dating action but I got snaked by this lame dude named Shawn Murphy who won Brandys eye by shuffling baseball cards faster & being a little crazier on his four-wheel green machine. It killed me ... all summer I tried to get faster on the cards & upstage everyone on the street big wheel scene, but alas, no Salem. She moved to Iowa, still think of her when that Im in love with the sea" song comes on. Fucking Shawn....
Fast forward 21 years ... in the game of pure electronic hard-core insanity, Wolf Eyes hear rumors of this RI band of PCP chair-throwing HC yahoos who hold the crown on violence & sonic terror. Fuck that. We thought we were the end of the well in electronic napalm. This Black Dice band wanted to play in Detroit ... no one will do it. Fear of violence/death threats/general horror left them with no gig. "Why would I wanna book a band who is gonna beat up my friends?" was the local consensus. So BD get a Monday gig at Club Olson/my basement in quiet Ferndale, home to a handful of whacked out electronic misfit gigs. Neighbors of the crib being left side= young couple / right side = quiet lesbian couple with child. My cell rings nonstop days before the gig with crazed young HC fiends asking if the gig is true. I start to get nervous, then I hear they need like 30,000 watts for their gig. What the?
Gig day/come home from my office job & the Dice dudes are waiting for me. These are the horrible terror junkies who stab people when they play? All I see is smiles, loafers, Bjorn playing with a kid, and starry-eyed-vacant-brain Danny. Weird. Then they load in; mounds of amplifiers, mounds. The whole basement looking like Iron Maiden was gonna play. Wolf Eyes jams, we think it is intense, whatever. Then they play ... starting with solo recorder and then / WHOA /the most violent, insane, Hiroshima tidal roar of basement sonic terror EVER. EVER. We never heard or witnessed anything so massive. We have seen the Merzbows, the Skin Crimes, the Gravitars, Youth In Asia, whatever.. This was in a totally different sound universe where the air is filled with concrete. It was louder in the street than it was in the basement black hole of sound. Imagine Black Dice playing in your fucking basement on a Monday night! Jesus. No neighbor complaints. Changed our view on sound/terror/attack. This was our challenge; meet this Dice volume unholiness on the same sonic field before Shawn Murphy & his Outlaw band does it better. Dudes were so cool two of them even slept in the basement. Awesome.
So we became best friends. Nate called me at work the next morning & said "we are gonna do a record together" I laughed ... that would rule...
So fast forward another two years. Here is it is. Recorded at a subterranean Chinatown studio in two days. Tons of jacked EQ, no space, cases of brew, clouds of smoke, Guinness record for most times "Dude" was said. We met on equal ground here. Total respect/the record really sounds like the shadow of each band. It was a blast. Play it on 16 rpm in a closet and jam along with the bones of an enemy. He greatly enjoyed grammatically dissecting languages and trying to understand and explore their structures. His many initiatives and projects bear witness to his boundless obsessions with communication and circulation of works and ideas as a cultural strategy. This LP includes Hamlet for Two Voices (1977) in which two voices read out the names of the characters in the Shakespearean play as they appear in the script, audibly representing the structure of the roles the characters perform. Poema (1977) orally represents the structure and spatial characteristics of a poem, by listing all its structural elements: words, paragraphs and verses, etc. The LP also includes Aritmetica, Three Spanish Pieces, and First Spanish Lesson, as well as the legendary 45 Revoluciones por Minuto, the grooviest track ever created within the context of conceptual art. All pieces, recorded at the Instituut voor Sonologie in Utrecht between September and October 1977, have in common their refusal of discursiveness. They are not meant to be true or beautiful. Each piece is a series of vocal units that unfolds according to simple rules. Their beginning and end are arbitrary: they could go on infinitely. They should go on. They go on. Liner notes by Nat Hentoff. Following retrospective comments by the LPs producer: "On first hearing Kath and Loren one is struck by the daring intimacy of their sound. Both on their early Daggett recordings, and live, I was moved by the rigor and bravery of the spiritual explorations they undertook in their music. While mining not unfamiliar tunes in the blues and folk idioms as well as lovely, spare originals, they, both in their own distinct ways, daringly stripped the music to some of its barest and most exquisitely aching elements. Together, they created a sound that while it echoed some of American musics oldest traditions was something resolutely new and original. After hearing Kath and Loren on their own home produced tapes, I wanted to capture some of that sublimity, that quiet intensity with more clarity. Thus inspired, my short lived label put out Sing the Children Over almost 20 years ago. Im sure that Prick Decays very name has, in the past, led people to believe that their records contain some sonic equivalent of the contentious name: an abrasive mish-mash of horrendous screams, power electronics, guitars being chainsawed apart, or some similarly aggressive, but ultimately boring and pointless brand of noise. Thats a shame because their work owes much more to the weird and subtle minutiae of sound than any sort of bombast"-the same goes for The Shield That Pierces the Earth. Dylan has described Shield as his "folk" record (theres some sort of pun to be made with Dylan and folk no doubt), probably because he is using more plucked guitar (cf. "Clays Festering Lungs") and less tape collage than his past recordings with Prick Decay. But theres very little in terms of structure or melody that might remind the listener of "folk" per se. If anything, the music that this bears the most resemblance to is that of Southeast Asia, though more in the way of the experimentation of the Sun City Girls or Climax Golden Twins than anything that might be termed "authentic." As Temp Webber puts it in the sleeve notes, this is more reminiscent of "folk music for insects" than anything else: mixed in with the guitar plucking and keyboard tones are alien clicks and squeaks and other audio detritus. Members of Open City have previously played with the likes of Anthony Braxton, Alvin Lucier, and Phill Niblock, and theres no denying their strong grasp of the language of higher minded improvisation. Yet their approach is undercut with a real rock sensibility, made most manifest in the barbed wire tones of the guitars. Yet throughout these recordings, Prophet and her acolytes belt forth piercing, glossalaliac vocalizations, coming over like a cross between a Southern auctioneer and La Monte Young. To the battered souls who had hoped for inner peace or transcendence from CUT, these intonations were obviously meant to be received as the spiritualist "proof" of Prophets power. But I bet the breakdancer among them didnt reckon with their activity being denounced as a "perverted movement of the body." -Jim Haynes, The Wire. Eight years after writing her first songs and dropping out of college to pursue her passion as a street musician, Carol was still following the love, making music and magic as she roamed free up and down the California coastline. The harp that BOBBY BROWN gave her back in 1971 was still her main axe whenever she played, and the primary instrument she used on her debut album Love Has Made Me Stronger. That record had been self-produced, and Carol sold copies wherever she played, but for the production of Takin The Time, Bobby Brown stepped into the producers role. He had already produced two incredible albums for himself (The Enlightening Beam of Axonda and Bobby Brown Live) and in the studio, he succeeded in marrying his sound to Carols, producing a sleek, light vibe that conveyed all the hope and joy that Carols songs held within themselves. The project has existed for four or five years, but this is their first release with any substantial physical footprint on this corporeal plane.
Takahashi has a lengthy history in the Japanese rock underground, dating back to his involvement with no-wavers Akebonoizu during the late seventies and early eighties. Since then he has been the drummer of choice for virtually everyone whos anyone on the scene. High Rise, Fushitsusha, Tamio Shiraishi, Kosokuya, Ch_֬_-SHIZU, Maher Shalal Hash Baz, and Nagisa Ni Te amongst others have all benefited from his propulsive, dynamic mastery of space. Solo, duo and more expansive projects under a variety of names including Aura Nihilitica, Lamones Young, and Of Dogstarman have revealed a hitherto unsuspected facility for environment-altering improvised drone and electronic drift. Muronoi too has a long CV of experimental dance work behind her, ranging from solo butoh pieces to multi-media collaborations with visual artists, filmmakers and musicians.
The name Anoyo no dekigoto means something like Happenings in the Other World, an entirely appropriate moniker for the indeterminate, non-linear and metaphysical nature of the communication between Muronoi and Takahashi during their improvised performances. The music is not simply a background score for the dancers movements. Takahashi even shies away from the description of what they do as communication. Rather, he refers to a complex series of negotiations between dancer, musician, environment, and audience that serve to create a sense of enveloping, trembling communal space. On these recordings, Takahashi takes his interest in electronics to another level. On one track he deploys over thirty tiny oscillators to create a constantly moving, deeply immersive field of higher-function insect chatter. Even without Muronois wraith-like physical presence, the music on this album exerts an eerie and oblique dominance over any room in which it is played. It subtly modifies the listeners perception of time and space, leaving behind a tangible and mournful reminder of its presence, like the luminescent tracks of some passing phantom slowly decaying back into incorporeality. -Alan Cummings. You can listen, but just when you think youre hearing something, you realise that 12 hours have gone by and you have a new and inexplicable scar on some unlikely part of your anatomy. Too late you realise that the sound you can hear at the very edge of audition is not this recording, but the sound of forty metal robotic insects starting to eat their way out through your still-sedated navel. Waking with a start in time to flip the album over on your turntable, you notice that subsonic frequencies have begun to rearrange the contents of your mantlepiece into a veritable Morris Dance of inanimate objects, when you thought the audio had not yet begun to play back. A vestigial bass throb starts up in the back of your cranium, as very slow-moving if not actually stationary spacecraft begin to land in the garden. Three days later they are still hovering as the seventh and final track of thr album begins to play, and infinitesimally subtle stereo effects start panning in impossible permutations audible only between your shoulder blades. Apparent suspension of time, delirious interludes, interference with the basic laws of physics, all of these effects are possible results of listening to the beautifully poised, finely polished and unutterably beautiful sounds contained in this simultaneously forbidding and inviting artifact. If, like me, these are all the things you look for in a sound recording, then look no further. If its merely music you require, then I suggest you meddle not in the affairs of your betters and proceed directly to the nearest chain CD store and stock up big time. -Bruce Russell [Noise Legend], Lyttelton, NZ, May 2002.

"Heres a piece of wax that came out back in 2002, and its a title that we thought was long discontinued by Fusetron. But, luckily, somehow, a handful of copies still exist, and if youre keen on the stun-drone / brain-zonk electronics currently blasted by the EMERALDS axis, you NEED to investigate everything that Omit has ever released. Our words from way back when... Both K-Group and Omit have been longtime aQuarius favorites from the New Zealand experimental noise scene; but unfortunately, theyve been pretty quiet in their respective outputs during the past couple of years. K-Group is the solo project for Paul Toohey, who has also worked in the (defunct?) Surface Of The Earth, both of which centered around low-frequency tectonic drones coaxed from abused amplifiers. Clinton Williams has taken up the Omit moniker for his creepy, tape loop compositions loaded with bleak sci-fi / psychotic imagery. This collaboration between Williams and Toohey is actually their second, if you count a 7" which came out ages ago. In running Williams battery of analog synths through Tooheys cabinets, theyve constructed an eerie album of deep rumblings that are on par with anything that Coleclough, Koner, or Troum have managed to release. As the K-Group / Omit drones ripple with a gritty amplifier buzz often lacking in the driftwork of those aforementioned artists, "Storage" pulses with a subterranean heaviness, pushing this closer towards the Earth / SUNNO))) terrain. Due to his white skin, however, there were few jobs for him in this field in the early sixties, since New York only had two active jazz clubs at that time. Because of this Jones began to study experimental composition under John Cage and Earle Brown in 1960. Through his teachers he got acquainted with Dick Higgins and Alison Knowles. When Higgins and Knowles travelled to Europe in 1962 to participate in several Fluxus Festivals, Jones rent their studios. Here he developed his first music machines, with which he was very successful from the beginning. Since 1963 Jones participated in the Fluxus-movement and took part in a number of performances with his music machines. In 1963 he performed at the Yam festival in New Brunswick for the first time, a year later he performed at the Avantgarde music festival in New York. Many exhibitions and actions in New York and Nice followed until Jones opened his own Music-Store in New York in 1969. In 1972 he produced the album Fly together with John Lennon and Yoko Ono and founded the Fluxus-Airline with George Macunias. At that time he settled down in Europe; he lived in Amsterdam, Asolo (Italy), Berlin and Wiesbaden and exhibited worldwide in galleries and museums. In 1980 Jones was a guest of the DAADs Berlin artist program, before he took up residence in D_ɬºsseldorf and Wiesbaden. Since the mid-eighties Jones produced short films with his computer, the so-called Fluxus-Home-Movies, and he also devised larger orchestra-like installations with his music machines. His busy exhibition schedule remained unchanged: In 1988 his works could be seen at the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, in 1992/93 there was a big touring exhibition with stops in Helsinki, Nuremberg, Rotterdam and Wuppertal. In addition to that his music machines have been represented in the worldwide exhibition Fluxus in Deutschland since 1995, which could be seen in Gera, Budapest, Istanbul, Br_ɬºnn, Copenhagen, Athens, Tel Aviv and Warsaw so far; further stops are planned for Australia, New Zealand, Japan and South Africa until 2002. - Ketterkunst.
