Members of Open City have previously played with the likes of Anthony Braxton, Alvin Lucier, and Phill Niblock, and theres no denying their strong grasp of the language of higher minded improvisation. Yet their approach is undercut with a real rock sensibility, made most manifest in the barbed wire tones of the guitars. Indeed, the combination of avant theory and punk rock aethetics drops them in a similar space to Sonic Youths Goodbye 20th Century. Drummer Andrew Maxwell runs the gamut of percussive techniques, from all-out pots and pans attack through the kind of sonorous cymbal work that Eddie Prevost uses to illuminate AMMs darker paths. Twin guitarists Peter Kolovos and Doug Russell veer from Sonic Youths Moore\/Ranaldo tag team wrassling to setting their guitars up as lightning rods for the liquid flow of electricity. Kousokuya are from Tokyo, have donated some spectacular tracks to the first two volumes of the Tokyo Flashback compilation series on the PSF label, and self-released an extremely ltd. LP in 1991. The band has been around for quite some time; I originally was under the impression they formed around 1984, but was recently informed that an edition featuring Nanjo and Narita from High Rise existed going back to the late 70s!?. Either way, theyve always been pretty lo-profile, but this CD at least shines a bit of light on their extended, heavy guitar sound. An early press release for the bands describes them well: The band name Kousokuya means a ray night. Since 1984 they have been playing their own high volume heavy driven avant-garde psychedelic music. Kaneko, he always plays guitar with full of feedback. One of the outstanding guitar players in the underground scene. No one can play guitar like him. Mick, she plays bass and is also main vocalist. Mike Landucci started the band in 1995 with his brother Tom, and Jacob Anderson (Spirit Duplicator, Yuma Nora) joined shortly after. Christopher Breedon started drumming for them in 98, and those three have formed the core of the band ever since. Dozens of notable musicians have come and gone, most importantly, Brian Miller (Foot Village) who gains a mastering credit on this album, and Rob Enbom (Hospitals, Eat Skull), who, with Landucci and Anderson, took the band on an unexpected detour into more degenerative psych-noise terrain (think Amon \u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003eDüül II), and as far as a European tour in 2007. Based in downtown Long Beach now, Landucci and Breedon have brought on board the two eldest Landucci boys (Linus, 19; Noah, 16) and local jazz guru Rob Woodworth, in between annual trips to Portland to record with Anderson. Recordings with every combination of this haphazard group are reflected on Important Picnic. Its easy to forget that every song is completely improvised in one take; they take on a verse-chorus-bridge format frequently. Its like Evaporators with none of the humor or musicianship; Hijokaidan deciding to cover the Hollies. Hints of no wave, garage, and straight-up bullshit indie noise weave in and out of these songs like it was natural and meant to be -- wink, nod, gasp, sigh. Simple-mindedness is celebrated, embraced, declared a virtue, and Gang Wizard invites you in to revel in it. One of Gang Wizards 2013 self-released lathe cuts had the distinction of being purchased by exactly two people: Thurston Moore and Henry Rollins. Will the rest of the world ever catch onto whatever it is those two hear in the adventurous ramblings of the Gang Wizard? Doubtful. The original LP was issued in an edition limited to 300 copies. The material was recorded from 1979 to 1981 but wasnt released until 1983 due to problems with the silkscreened sleeve. The band only put out this record, a real hidden gem. Lepke said that he wanted it to sound like a Beach Boys LP by using lots of different studios but it was mostly done on a cassette machine with a primitive surround function. Lepke is the man who does the impossible every time he picks up a tin, carton, bottle or instrument. The first person with enough originality to adopt anything to his own idiosyncratic style. Retired to an obscure basement, still without peers in the world. Lounge makes rhythms that by this time need no words of praise with a wallop, that when left, makes the usual praise words disintegrate. A mix of inestimable ability with feelings as wild as it is rare. Salamander has that certain something that most people can never have even if they practice for an eternity. Most important in his influence, most endearing in his emotional impact and most convincing in his new-found authority. If The Homosexuals were a strange prospect, and their music should fit into a similar spot as that of angry young men like Wire and Magazine who carried their penchants for art-school angst in the midst of proto-thug posturing, Milk from Cheltenham were an even more extreme band. Not only progressive with a certain artistic notion (a reference could be found in This Heat, Family Fodder and Chris Cutlers bands Henry Cow and the Art Bears) but also closer to more primitive sound experimentations of a cryptic and sinister Residential perspective. This release finally documents one of the most important projects developed in the scene explored by The Homosexuals. The four tracks on this LP are carefully constructed mixtures of wonderful guitar and basslines, atmospheric synth-layers, dubby electronic music and unorthodox samples. Although very eclectic in its wide range of sounds and elements, the recordings are characterized by a coherent mood. If you can imagine a hybrid of Nurse With Wound, early Residents and Tom Recchion, youre probably quite near to what can be heard on this great record. The four instrumentals correspond with four large, modified black-and-white photographs by Tim Berresheim which are fully reproduced on four sides of the stunning extra-large gatefold-cover in the form of a triptych. An impressive artists record which comes in a limited edition of 400 copies.\" - Eventuell.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Eventuell","offers":[{"title":"LP","offer_id":51871379143,"sku":"5060-EVENTUELL","price":28.0,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/2295\/2925\/products\/R-1600892-1231812554_jpeg.jpg?v=1571717512"},{"product_id":"brast-burn-debon","title":"BRAST BURN - Debon","description":"\u003cp\u003e\"1999 release, restocked. \"Public domain reissues of 2 obscure Japanese underground releases, originally issued on Voice Records in the mid-70s to early 80s(?). These two records are something of a mystery. No group information was ever given, and no production date or location is indicated. It would seem though, that these records are both by the same group of Japanese people and that they were recorded in the mid seventies in Japan. In common with Magical Power Mako, the musical influences here are much more Germanic than anything Japanese, with long hypnotic free form rock hysteria, comparable to Faust in the use of experimentation and heavily fuzzed electric guitar. The emotional wordless vocals echo those of Damo Suzuki from Can. But unlike Can the rhythms are wrought from hand drums, sleigh bells, tambourine, bass drum and other simple means. Hard blown harmonica is a strong feature on this somewhat crazed mantric rock along with recorder, flute, zither, mandolin, acoustic guitar and synth. Before starting the complex and compelling production of many records and tapes in the early eighties under the M.B. trademark, Maurizio Bianchi was documenting the new music scene writing essays and reviews for independent magazines. It was August 1979 in Milan, Italy and his sound was strengthening when he felt the time had come to prove his desire for something new. So he started his first solo project, under the name Sacher-pelz. He assembled a concrete equipment -- the endurance of M.B. had started. During the following few months four C60 magnetic tapes were created Cainus (August\/September 1979), Venus (October\/November 1979), Cease to Exist (December 1979\/January 1980) and Velours (February\/March 1980), a couple of copies for friends, never getting an official distribution. Surely a very private moment but still the first and only production at that time in Italy to go beyond the TG movement, the direct reference. EesT records got into possession of the original masters and decided this was the right moment to let those obscure sonorities see the night light. The tapes were remastered for a more powerful digital sound featured in this four CD boxset including the original graphics and liner notes as well as a new visionary essay, written expressly for this edition. After a long research in the archives spread around the Italian territories a few more documents were found (the original presentation text titled Sacher-pelz: mutation for a continuity, a collage titled Pure art for crime people, more graphics and reviews) and they are also included here. Much to my surprise the early compilation I.D. Art #2 was not included in this otherwise major overview of the LAFMS. I.D. Art #2 was the second LP release on their label, coming after Le Forte Fours Bikini Tennis Shoes LP, and before the 2LP Live at the Brand, a split album between Le 44 and The Doo-Dooettes. It dates from 1976. It is also probably the most difficult LP on their catalogue to find. Originally released in an edition of just 200 copies, most of which were given out to the 44 artists and groups who appeared on this extraordinary LP. The deal was that each track was paid for by the contributor at a rate of $8 per minute in exchange for 4 copies of the disc. Consequently very few copies were ever made available via the LAFMS mail order service. With a running time of 66 minutes and the sheer variety of contributions, I.D. Art #2 remained for most people a mysterious and tantalising item. After the band split in 1972, a despondent Jem took up home recording, laying down hours of tape on a Teac 4-track machine. Jem selected the best cuts from these solo sessions in 1978 and released \"Luckey Guy\" pasting the gatefold covers and handling all sales himself in true DIY fashion. The album never stays still with one style for too long, but rather drifts along with spaced-out guitar (Bumble Bee Drive), tortured, dissonant piano (Ring Out The Bells), culminating in a sparse, apocalyptic tale (The Bomb Tune), with bits of childlike whimsy and Jem's eerie harmonies woven throughout, not to mention a few musical touches that indicate its mid-1970s vintage. Were we to shamelessly namedrop, we might mention Syd Barrett, Skip Spence, Brian Wilson and Gary Wilson as starting points... but we're above that, for its the first ever appearance on compact disc of this odd and eclectic bit of loner folk\/psych. The label tracked down the master-tapes, miraculously still in storage at the original pressing plant, and created a mini-LP sleeve replica of the original album jacket, that includes an insert booklet with liner notes and newly-transcribed lyrics handwritten by Jem himself.
