"Athletic Automatons debut full-length is making my palms (and ears) sweat as we speak. Of the bands that have splintered out of the Providence, Rhode Island, implosion that was agro-fuck pukes Arab on Radars demise, Athletic Automaton rules my world the most (no wave psychsters Made in Mexico and ho-hum dance-punks Chinese Stars are the others). Comprised solely of ex-AOR guitarist Stephen Mattos and ex Pellum 1-2-3 drummer Patrick Crump (who like to dress up as basketball jocks in concert), Athletic Automaton rock a sick dynamic that is all about sustain and twisting your mind and expectations past the breaking point. Their riffs and grooves are minimal, the lyrics occasional, and a tension they bend so well a most definitely welcome constant. So even though 5 Days In Africa was recorded back in late 2003 and the copyright date on the hand-assembled package reads 2004, you can rest assured youre not getting some old hat over here (after a bad experience with buzz noisy label XXXXX XXXX, who initially issued this record, the band have taken over the release themselves.) Wax hounds take note - word is this is going to be released on 180 gram vinyl by Liquid Death/Hello Pussy Records in the very near future, which will make it even more ferocious for the dense grooves at play." - Kevin Hainey, SKYSCRAPER.
