Similar to the tape batch series where we pair two artists from different parts of the world together with a theme that is not necessarily a sonic theme, this 7” series continues that theme but in the true classic punk format of one song per artist on each side of the 7”. For the first in the series we’re incredibly honored to have a split between SAICOBAB from Japan and Purplish’s own TAKAAT!

SAICOBAB’s ‘Death Nap The Dance II’ is a ferocious 6 minute track consisting of in your face vocals by YoshimiO (also of OOIOO, Boredoms), electronics and sitar played by master sitar player, composer, and arranger specializing in North Indian music, Yoshida Daikiti. Yoshida has been studying Indian music and the sitar since 1996, and since 2006, he has studied under Ustad Shujaat Khan, the 7th-generation master of the prestigious Imdad School—India’s only sitar school. As SAICOBAB mentions “‘Death Nap The Dance II’ is written on the basis of the traditional Raga Sarang family. However, for SAICOBAB, a new interpretation of Raga has been added for being in a dream in a nap. This Quaternity dance music that expands raga (melody) and tala (rhythm) into the realm of the imaginary!”

TAKAAT’s side features the song ‘Ikapkaban’ written by Ibrahim Ahamet aka Bibi Ahmed of Groupe Inerane and arranged by TAKAAT. This track features blown out drum machines, guitar, bass, and electronics recorded to 1/2” tape immediately following a 7 week US tour. When talking with Ahmoudou about Bibi Ahmed, he casually mentioned Bibi was the first guy to bring the electric guitar to Niger from Libya. A huge deal as the guitar became a key figure in the sound of the Agadez, Niger Taureg Wedding guitar rock scene! I remember hearing this song apart of Sublime Frequencies amazing Guitar’s From Agadez compilations that started coming out in 2010. Hearing Hisham Mayet’s raw recordings by these Agadez Taureg groups truly changed my life and this cover feels like a full circle homage.

Like the Purplish releases that came before, the 7” split series is SUPER LIMITED to 300 copies. Once they’re gone, they’re gone. So dig out those dancing shoes, crank your stereos, and join us in blasting the new SAICOBAB/TAKAAT split 7”!

----

SAICOBAB:
YoshimiO: Vocalization & Effects
Yoshida Daikiti: Sitar & Tack Maker

Song title: Death Nap The Dance II
Songwriter : SAICOBAB
Recording by: Kabamix & SAICOBAB
Recorded at: LMD, Osaka, Japan
Mixed & Mastered by: Kabamix
Design by: CYLNDR Studios

----

TAKAAT:
Ahmoudou Madassane : Guitar, Vocals
Mikey Coltun : Bass, Electronics, Drum Machines

Song title: Ikapkaban
Songwriter: Ibrahim Ahamet
Arranged by: TAKAAT
Recorded, Mixed, and Produced by: Mikey Coltun at Bossa/Purplish Studios, April 2026
Mastered by: Seth Manchester at Machines with Magnets
Design by: CYLNDR Studios
