SNOOKS - Unfinished Business/By Land And By Sea
"A staggering collection of music and experimentation courtesy the transcontinental mail/tape collaborations of Jim Shepard (V-3, Vertical Slit - via Columbus, Ohio) and Doktor Liborius (aka Eric Svensson - via Sweden/Netherlands/France), collectively known as SnoOks. Unfinished Business mines a wide selection of work from this dynamic duo, covering a myriad of creative terrain: guitar collages, audio-soundscapes (using synth, keyboards, misc. electronics), spoken word bits, tape manipulations and live guitar/tape loop performances...just to name a few. SnoOks was a cosmic live wire, compressing off-kilter sounds and ideas that well undoubtedly never see the likes of again (at least not on this planet). In fact, The Residents may hate the Beatles, but Doktor Liborius does what he can to combine his influences from both of those worlds via synaptic eruptions of kraut-influenced electronomics tainted even further by steady nods to synth pop areas unvarnished. Shepard on the other hand, weaves his prophetic, profound and prolific lyrics and guitar patterns around these compositions, to create an atmosphere that brings a junk-sick Burroughs meets hop-dazed Kerouac to mind. A few of these tracks have made appearances on past Shepard solo outings (most accessible of which being 'Treenas Strobe Light Party' from the 1995 Siltbreeze LP 'Picking Through the Wreckage with a Stick)', but the majority of material found on Unfinished Business has never before seen release until now. Weighing in at a hefty 80+ minutes of live and studio recordings spread over two compact discs (one of which aurally projects you to Staches 1984 with SnoOks opening for luminary/avant-garde composer John Cale of Velvet Underground fame - the audience was baffled), this collection will intrigue and mesmerize both the casual fan and the Shepard aficionado alike." - Mental Telemetry. 'Doktor Liborius never met Jim Shepard. In 1977, a fanzine article caught the attention of the young Liborius. It spoke of an auto-produced LP (remember those?) featuring experimental soundscapes and raw power. The creator of this album was a Mr. James Shepard. Liborius found his number, called and friendship immediately started to sprout...' - selection from Unfinished Business liner notes. Formerly a 2 CDR set now combined onto a cheaper, single cd. Highly Recommended!"
